I prefer 5.5, mainly because it seems more balanced. Weapon expertise gives martials an interest boost and removing the -5 to hit/+10 to damage feats is probably a good thing. I don't like the moon druid in the new version as much; the monk however is a lot better.

Limits on race/class etc. should be very setting dependent. Of the official settings I've played (never played Dragon Lance) I have enjoyed Dark Sun and Eberron (when it leaned into the steam punk) the most. Also enjoyed oriental adventures; played a version adapted to South Asia (Mughal Empire period) which was nice but we used quite a bit of homebrew mod. Never really tried out spelljammer/planescape but maybe someday. Same goes for starting level. I like level one or even level zero funnel starts as PbP tends to slow down on development quickly and the first few levels really feel like updates in a way that later ones don't always (at least if you are playing a martial).

Homebrew can be great but I've found there are two related issues. One is when someone has put a ton of work into their history and culture and feels compelled to push it all on the PCs to the detriment of role playing with each other or tactical/strategic thinking. The other is when its a homebrew that feels like just one or two ideas that didn't get very developed. Sort of walking a tightrope with it; when I've done it, I usually use a modified historical setting to try to allow for the depth of lore and culture that I enjoy.

Liking 5.5 better as well, mostly because of the fixed subclasses.

If I have to play 5e for some reason, I prefer 5.5, though it's far from my favorite system. When I do play 5e (or 5.5e), I use Ancestry & Culture: An Alternative to Race in 5e. It takes a little work to convert to 5.5, but I find it worth it in the long run.

5.5e is much better imo, feels much more balanced.
