Can I stop searching the aether?

All kidding aside, I found this site by randomly searching the internet for PbP for TTRGPs. I like the idea of play by post, mostly due to the flexibility of time. Unfortunately, at my age and having missed most of the 90s, I am a bit slow on technology. I bought my first smart phone in 2016.

I started playing D&D back in '76 or 77'. It is difficult to remember exactly. I have since played, Shadowrun, Vampire, Traveler, GURPS, and Pathfinder. The other forum I was on is basically dead. The same few people will reverse engineer a character using their idea of the best mechanics manipulation, but no one ever actually plays, a few posts and everyone ghosts.

I can get into a character and write for just about any setting, but I no longer have any hardcopy material, as everything was lost during hurricane Rita. So it is with failing body and very limited resources that I hope to occupy my mind with thoughts of aspiration and accomplishment, even if they can only be projected onto a persona.

Welcome! Sorry to hear about your poor experiences. Hope you find a game you like soon!

Hey MacConnell, glad you found us. I hope you'll find a game soon!

If you want to see how GP functions, here are links to the New GP Member Guide, the forum rules, this video introduction made by user Qralloq and a little helpful formatting guide made by user Adam. You might also be interested in looking through some public games as well to get a feel for the site.

If you have any questions about how to use the site, you can put them into our Questions and Help subforum.

To join a game, keep your eyes on the Games Tavern, where GMs advertise their games and look for players.

You're also invited to join us on the Discord server for some friendly conversation, about the site, RPGs in general or anything else!

If you have any concerns or questions, feel free to contact any of the following moderators:

Happy gaming!

Welcome! I also just found the site. There's a lot of free source material around nowadays so you don't necessarily need a bunch of hardcopy to play these days. Finding a group wanting to play the more niche indie material can be a challange though. Maybe we'll wind up in the same game sometime.

Do you fancy an old school dungeon crawl or are you more of an open-air adventurerer?

Welcome Aboard!

Lots of us 'old timer' players around who remember the dawn of the hobby! You're in good company in GamersPlane... It's a pretty lively site with a good variety of games played.
PbP is a great medium to really get into writing/playing a good character without the rush of tabletop improv. Asynchronous play takes the pressure out of being put on the spot and gives time to really think about character dialogue and actions.

What kinds of games are you looking for setting/system-wise?

Welcome to GP, MacConnell!

Welcome to the community, MacConnell! I've been part of a number of PbP communities over the years that went through that slow decline, and I'm happy to report that this is a pretty vibrant and happenin' RPG place.

Good luck finding a game!

To be honest, I am not familiar with the terminology, but I can play either plot driven or random scenarios. I probably prefer the plot driven ones because they have a definitive goal for the GM to guide or push players toward

I don't really know. If I learn how to use the site, I will try anything that is active.

The site us pretty easy to use. There are YouTube tutorials on regular and advanced uses for the site that are incredibly helpful! There are links in the welcome post Dr_B made above.
Of course, the best way to learn is to jump on in and play! ;)

Welcome aboard!

Nowadays, it's easier (and cheaper) to buy PDFs (digital copies) of the games you want to play (assuming that you can't find free copies on the Internet).

If you buy from DriveThruRPG, they'll save your purchases in an online library in case anything happens to your computer (storm damage, old age, etc.).

Mods: I used the GP affiliate link. :)

Welcome! Hope you find the fellow old-timers here, myself included, easy to hang out with to play a game or two.

In the video by Qrolloq, to find a game he hovers over the games tab at the top which opens a drop down menu from which he selects "all games." This drop down menu never appears for me.

Hi MacConnell. It's been a few years since I made those videos, and the site has evolved in some places.

If you click the games icon, then the Games heading at the top...

Then you'll see this...

If you type something in the Browse box it will sort the list of games below.

Hope that helps!

Or you can just click on the "Games Tavern" link on the homepage.

Thanks for the help. I guess I am out of luck or just too inept. Everything sends me on a loop. The browse option only searches titles, which I do not know. The list seems to have no particular order, so it is probably by recent post. Most everything is closed. I really do not even know for what I am looking. I am still trying to learn how to navigate the site.

I'd recommend posting a request in the Games Tavern thread if you're having trouble finding an open game that fits your style. You might find someone willing to start one up. That said, if you're not sure what you're looking for, I don't know if the forums will help with that.
