Chapter 4.3 Signals in the Wake

Apr 15, 2026 6:32 pm
Signals in the Wake
The communications board aboard Azure Voyager does not remain quiet for long. Once the brief burst traffic between the cutter and the ship passes through the local electromagnetic environment, the merchant bands around Balac Pontli and the wider traffic net of Marinagua begin to stir. Edrin’s console quietly flags a series of tight-beam and commercial-band transmissions originating from vessels working the starport approaches and trade routes. Nothing aggressive appears in the signal picture—no targeting radars, no military challenge, no immediate threat—just the unmistakable hum of merchant chatter spreading outward through the system’s informal information network.

It is the sort of thing that happens whenever a new ship appears somewhere it normally does not belong. Word moves quickly among the independent captains who make their living around Marinagua. Within minutes, the pattern becomes obvious. The rumor has begun to circulate, and several of the local Free Captains have decided to introduce themselves to the unidentified vessel now somewhere in the Marinagua system.
The first message arrives on a directed commercial channel, the sender identifying itself as the merchant vessel Star’s Mercy under the command of Free Captain Jalen Verik. His tone is calm, almost professional, the voice of a trader accustomed to dealing with unfamiliar ships.
Captain Jalen Verik

"Unidentified vessel operating in the Marinagua system—this is Captain Jalen Verik of the Star’s Mercy. It seems you’ve attracted a little attention already. That happens when a new hull arrives without announcing itself through the usual channels. If you’re here to conduct trade or open discussions with the tribes, it can be... complicated. I’ve been working these routes long enough to help newcomers avoid certain misunderstandings. Interesting timing, though. There’s already been a bit of discussion on the ground these past few months about some offworld visitors who arrived earlier this year. That sort of talk tends to linger around Balac Pontli. If you decide you need a broker, my comm channel is open. Either way—welcome to Marinagua."
The second transmission arrives only a few minutes later, this one cast more openly across the merchant bands rather than directed specifically toward Azure Voyager. The sender identifies herself as Captain Alira "Stormhand" Cox of the independent vessel Proud Swiftsure. Her voice carries the blunt tone of someone used to frontier trade, hard weather, and rough negotiation.

Captain Alira 'Stormhand' Cox

"Unknown ship running quiet somewhere in the Marinagua system—this is Captain Alira Cox, Proud Swiftsure. We don’t see many new hulls out here unless they’re looking for something specific. Some captains will offer to guide you through how Balac Pontli works. Take that advice carefully. The tribes don’t like surprises, and the starport has its own rules about who lands where. If you’re planning to come down, best make sure you understand which tribe controls which piece of ground before you pick a landing pad. That’s just friendly advice from someone who’s been here awhile. Fly safe."
The third signal arrives a short time afterward as a encrypted transmission routed directly toward Azure Voyager. The identification header reads Independent Vessel Lucky Lady, commanded by Free Captain L.C. Raimes. His voice comes across smooth and conversational, with the faintest trace of amusement behind it.

Captain L.C. Raimes

"Unknown vessel keeping quiet somewhere out in the Marinagua system... this is Free Captain L.C. Raimes of the Lucky Lady. By now I imagine you’ve heard from Captain Verik and Captain Cox. They both mean well in their own ways. Marinagua has a habit of attracting visitors who think they’re observing the situation—when the situation is actually observing them.

You don’t sound like Niparoo trade, and you certainly don’t look like one of the regular independents. Which makes you... interesting. Around here that usually means someone exploring, someone negotiating, or someone trying not to be noticed.

I won’t ask which. A captain’s business is their own. But if you ever find yourself needing context about how things really work around Balac Pontli—who talks to which tribe, which landing pads are more trouble than they appear—the Lucky Lady makes a habit of knowing those sorts of things. No obligation. Just curiosity between captains."
As the final transmission fades from the comm board, the pattern is clear. Azure Voyager is now known as an unidentified vessel. The Free Captains are making certain they are not the last to discover who or what and why are this new ship is present.

"Well, we've been spotted and clocks are running. Sounds like Cox is not throwing her hat in the ring to be our guide, but did give us a warning that we need to know exactly whose territory we land in." She looks over the automatic transcripts of the communication. "Verik is offering and Raimes is too, though what they're offering is different. I think we continue with the plan to contact Verik but I think we need to hear what Raimes has to say, too. Encrypted tightbeams for all comms if we can manage it."

Virel frowns slightly, a hint of irritation crossing his features. "I do wonder how they found us," he murmurs, more to himself than anyone else.

Then he lifts his gaze to the others before settling on Chaala. "It seems the time has come to learn who the players are. I agree that Verik should be first. But we would be wise to hear the others as well. We will likely get different information from each."

He folds his hands behind his back and started to pace. "Now that our presence is known, we must also decide how we wish to be perceived and why we arrived without announcement."

His eyes move briefly across the room. "We may tell the truth, but if so, we should take care with how much. Some cards are best held until we understand the table."

Another measured pause. "So before we answer any of them, I believe we should decide two things: what story we present… and to whom we present it."
Apr 16, 2026 11:37 am
Wilbur nods.
"I agree — we should be open about who we are and what we're here for. But we stay vague about our numbers. We appeared from nowhere, which means they're already wondering what else is out there. Let them wonder. Silence on that point costs us nothing and may buy us something.

As for which captain to approach first — we want the one most likely to put people at ease and keep what we tell him close. Verik's tone suggests someone who understands discretion.
"

He straightens slightly.
"We should also decide now who we send as our contact. Things may move fast once we open that channel, and it is better to be ready. We need someone who can read people and put them at ease — this is not a diplomatic mission, just an inquiry, so any one of us can do it. And if we can manage it, a concealed distress beacon on whoever goes down wouldn't hurt."

"No one is going down to make contact. They made contact by radio, we respond in kind. There are advantages to face to face communication, yes, but more disadvantages to trying to insert someone into the airfield without showing our hand too much. We go down when we're ready to potentially talk to all comers." Chaala is clear and direct. "Now, we can go to video calls, comfort the Captains that they're dealing with Imperial Humaniti not Korzumug whatever, as well as better read facial and body language. One face on screen everyone else monitoring."

Looking at the character sheets I can see, JEEM is probably best suited, but he's in offline mode right now, so does anyone else have diplomat/diplomacy and want to jump in?

GM Comment - Just a thought, if you are proposing someone to be the contact..... wouldn't that actually be Virel Kilmire, Ex-Imperial Diplomatic Corps? (with his CT skill of Liaison-2, which MgT1E and 2E replaced with Diplomacy skill) ...a Diplomat with some skill at ferreting out when someone is lying. (Interrogation skill).
Just something to think about.

GM Comment (BTW nice roll!! - free point for Chaala for skill improvement):

Chaala remembers way back in her past life, (actually this applies to Bohdie, Wilber, JEEM, Dr. Shone, and even Virel) about being cautioned about the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) while it is possible to hide transmissions in the EMS, she was cautioned that hiding is not fool proof. Even at TL15 comms (sending to TL12 Cutter, etc) She was cautioned that the enemy has a vote.

Someone remembers the Alejia entry in the Library saying "Suspicious of each other and actively hostile to outsiders,". It is very reasonable that the 'Tribes' trying to gain an advantage among the competing tribes. When anything new happens. Where would they go if systems detected a sudden EMS surge

It is entirely possible that the EMS spike (from burst signals) did not compromise the players’ communications security (encryption); it merely revealed that something unusual had occurred, triggering the Balac Pontli information market within the Tribes.

"Captain, I wasn't suggesting we send someone down now — I meant we should decide ahead of time, so we're not scrambling when the moment comes. Things may move fast and hesitation could read as weakness.

As for who — I'd propose Virel. He has the experience for it.

"I suspect when we go down, we're going down in force, but point taken. I don't think we're going to be bring Voyager in and out repeatedly. More likely, we hit the ground, disembark everyone who's staying on the ground and someone to pilot the cutter, then every bit of equipment pulls back to orbit. It does leave us without grounded escape, but if we have to make a new LZ or, hopefully less likely, comandeer someone elses ship, that's preferable to losing equipment on the ground because, well, it's just sitting on the ground."

Edrin looks at Chaala. "…Okay Boss, what's our move? Reply to Captain Verik? Or Captain Raimes?" he pauses for a moment then continues;
" ...and what do we do with Scout-Engineer Voss? Do I send him a message?"
OOC:
You can consider that the comms between your team and other is via either video or hologram messaging. I consider this is what is being done unless your side wants to restrict communication methods.

All 3 Captains sent you a video message.

All comms to Scout Harlan Voss are via text-based burst message format.
Apr 21, 2026 5:57 am
"My instinct is to contact Verik first of the Captains. We need to at least give Voss a heads up that we've been contacted and to be on alert. We should also establish the remote link to fly that thing in case we have to. I'm not rated for the operation, but I've had basic familiarization on every aspect so I can do in a pinch but we're probably better working together. I'd say we've tripped into Diplomacy, so Virel, you're on point. I'll jump in if needed, but next step is your call."

OOC:
When you choose to conduct the remote piloting it will require a roll by @Stalker05 (Electronics-Remote Ops) and by @TiffanyKorta (piloting)

2. Virel Contacts Captain Verik and .....?
3. Establish the digital connection to the Cutter to fly it out if need be
4. Landing?

Sending the initial contact to Voss the same as we have, which is Edrin at the console, but handing off to Amara.

For the order, Virel's in charge, but my thoughts are:
Contact Voss - Inform him that we have been spotted by at least the three captains which undoubtedly means everyone will know shortly if they don't already. If we can tell which Captain sells the information to which tribe(s) that would be great but it isn't the priority.
Establish link to the cutter.
Contact Verik.

Landing depends very much on the communication with Verik (and possibly the other captains).

Virel is waiting on hold for any details that we get from Voss as that might affect the tone of any of the conversations with the other captains.

HARLAN

The burst transmission to the cutter is short, tight, and clean—just as before. The return signal takes a few seconds longer than usual, the delay noticeable but not alarming. When it arrives, it carries a compressed packet followed by a brief video insert. The image resolves into the dim interior of the cutter, where Scout-Engineer Harlan Voss sits partially in shadow, one of the instrument panels casting a low glow across his face. He looks tired, but alert.

"Good to hear from you. I was beginning to think I was the only one left watching this place." His eyes shift briefly off-screen, likely checking passive sensors, before returning. "So. Free Captains reached out. That tracks."

He exhales slightly, then continues. "I’ve actually met them. Not formally—just… one at a time. They come through the airfield, and word gets around there’s someone living out of a cutter who shouldn’t be. Curiosity does the rest."

He leans forward a fraction. "Verik’s been out here the most. Not often—just a few times—but every time he showed up, he brought food. Nothing extravagant, just practical. Didn’t press too hard, didn’t ask more than he needed to. He’s careful. If there’s a clean way to move through the tribes or the starport, he’ll know it—or know who does. If you’re looking for someone to open a door without slamming it behind you, he’s your best bet."

A slight shift of posture. "Cox came by a couple times. Different kind of presence. She doesn’t linger. Says what she has to and moves on. But she uses the warehouses on the airfield, so I’ve seen her working from a distance—how she interacts with the Alejia. She keeps things direct. No theatrics. They take her seriously. If she’s warning you about territory, she’s not guessing."

A faint trace of a smirk appears. "Raimes… he’s come out twice. Brought brandy both times. Good stuff, too." He pauses.
"Conversation was easy. Too easy. By the time he left, I had the distinct feeling he’d learned more about me than I had about him. That’s how he works. Friendly, open… but you don’t see the angles until later. If something’s moving through the captains, there’s a good chance he already knows. Just don’t expect anything from him that doesn’t benefit him first."

Voss glances down at a readout, then back up. "One of them—didn’t say it outright, but it was close—floated the idea of me signing on. Not serious, more like testing the water. That should tell you how they think. Everything’s an opportunity."

He settles back slightly. "As for what they’ll do with the fact you’re here—they’ll talk. Not openly, but enough. Each of them will try to figure out who you are before the others do. If they can turn that into leverage with the tribes, they will."

A brief pause, then more measured. "I haven’t seen any of them directly tied to whoever’s holding Dominicus and the others, but I have seen the supply flow—food, water, trade goods moving through the starport and out into the city. Same channels the captains use. Which means whether they’re directly involved or not… they’re close to it."

He lets that sit for a moment. "You being here is going to stir things up. Might already have. If someone decides your arrival changes the balance down there…" He leaves the thought unfinished, then looks directly into the camera. "Whatever you do next—do it on purpose."

A final pause. "And for what it’s worth—start with Verik. Just don’t assume he’s the only one listening." The transmission ends cleanly, the cutter returning to passive silence.
Apr 22, 2026 11:56 pm
Chaala watches the video in silence. "That tracks. Engineer or not, Voss strikes me as a good Scout. His read is similar to ours. Leaves the question of how much to say on first response to Verik. Your call, Virel, in both senses of the word that apply."
Apr 23, 2026 3:40 am
Virel turns to the others, considering Voss’s report for a moment before speaking.

"From Voss’s comments, the sooner we speak with Verik, the better, though we may need to speak to the rest before we are done. I suggest we send a short message requesting a secure conference at his earliest convenience. No urgency. We do not want to appear rushed."

He folds his hands behind his back.

"In the meantime, we should decide what we intend to ask and what we intend to reveal. I am open to suggestions. To me, our true priority is learning the location and condition of Dominicus and the others, without making that priority obvious. And once we know that, we should be prepared to quickly move forward. It would be optimistic to assume we can work entirely within the tribal system and secure their release through negotiation alone."

His expression hardens slightly.

"It would be prudent to plan for extraction options as well. Any other thoughts?"
Apr 23, 2026 6:03 am
"The only outstanding mission parameter is the recovery of Dominicus and the crew. While the Scout Service and Imperium in general may have different objectives here, they are all secondary to that and, frankly, I'm not going to lose sleep if we have to make life difficult for some other diplomat later on. They'll be much better off with Dominicus' report. Which of course means we need to locate them so that we have the option of extraction, albeit as a last resort. We need to identify who has them and why they are still being held, which means we need Verik, or someone else with access and good lines of communication with the tribes."

"My instinct is to avoid lying to Verik while trying to limit how much we give him to share with others. Maybe we make the contact in Ironhand uniform, not Scouts. We admit to Imperial ties and see if he lets us know that there are Imperials here. Of course if he's caught on that we've been talking to Voss, that ruse might not work."
Apr 23, 2026 4:39 pm
Edrin
Edrin shifts his weight slightly, glancing between Chaala and Virel before speaking. "If we’re going to talk to Verik, we should keep it simple and controlled," he says. "No long explanations, no mission brief. Just enough to open the door. He already knows we’re here—that much is out. What he doesn’t know is why, and that’s our leverage." He pauses briefly, then adds, tone more measured. "And for what it’s worth… throwing Imperial credentials on the table out here doesn’t buy us much. Not this far out. Most of the people operating in this system don’t answer to the Imperium, and they don’t particularly care who does." He folds his arms loosely. "We lead with capability and professionalism, not authority."

Amara
Amara, still watching the system displays, speaks without looking up. "He’s right," she says. "Out here, ‘Imperial’ is just another distant power. Sometimes it’s useful, sometimes it’s a liability, and most of the time it just makes people ask more questions than you want to answer." She taps a control absently. "If we say it outright, we risk shifting the conversation away from what we want and onto who we are. Verik will start trying to figure out what that means for him, and that gives him the initiative." She glances back. "Better to let him come to his own conclusions. If he thinks we’re tied to something larger, he’ll test that on his own."

JEEM
JEEM’s voice comes from the console, neutral and precise. "Recommendation: maintain partial transparency," it states. "Acknowledge offworld origin and structured affiliation without specifying governing authority or operational intent. Probability analysis suggests that invoking Imperial alignment at initial contact provides minimal influence gain and increases inquiry risk by external parties." A brief pause follows. "Optimal strategy: controlled disclosure."

Edrin
Edrin nods slightly. "We’re not hiding who we are," he adds, "we’re just not volunteering labels that don’t help us. Verik’s a trader. He’ll respond to what we can do, not who we claim to represent." He shifts his stance. "We ask for a secure conversation, keep the tone professional, and let him decide how much he wants to engage. If he thinks there’s value in us, he’ll lean in."

Amara
Amara leans back slightly. "And don’t make it sound like we need him," she adds. "That’s the quickest way to get a price attached to everything he says. If we present ourselves as capable, informed, and not desperate, he’s more likely to treat this like a partnership instead of an opportunity." She pauses, then continues, "We can frame it as looking for context—local conditions, trade patterns, recent activity. That gives him room to bring up those ‘offworld visitors’ himself without us pushing it."

JEEM
JEEM adds one final note. "Caution: all communications may be indirectly observed or inferred by third parties. Recommend avoiding sensitive identifiers and maintaining consistent messaging across channels."

Edrin
Edrin exhales quietly. "So—short message, request secure channel, no unnecessary labels, and let him make the first move once we’re talking." He looks to Virel. "That gives you room to steer the conversation where you want it."

The room settles for a moment, the plan now less about crafting the perfect explanation—and more about simply opening the door without giving away more than necessary.
Apr 25, 2026 11:24 pm
The low hum of the Azure Voyager’s crew lounge is broken by a soft chime from the communications console. Bohdie’s display flickers, then stabilizes as an incoming signal resolves—strong, deliberate, and unmistakably directed. The system flags it as a tri-vid transmission request, encrypted at a commercial level but cleaner than the usual merchant traffic. The source identifier populates a moment later: Free Captain Jalen Verik — Star’s Mercy.

The feed does not immediately open. Instead, a short preamble packet arrives first—text and handshake protocol—polite, measured, and carefully worded.

"Unidentified vessel operating in the Marinagua system—this is Captain Jalen Verik of the Star’s Mercy. I assume you’ve had a moment to consider the local situation. It tends to become clearer the longer one observes… and more complicated at the same time."

A brief pause in the transmission, as if intentionally giving space before continuing.

"I also assume by now you’ve heard from at least one or two of my colleagues. They are… enthusiastic when something new appears in their operating area. As am I, though I prefer to keep my curiosity structured."

The message shifts slightly in tone—not more urgent, but more pointed.

"If your intentions involve trade, access, or discussions with the tribes, I would recommend we move this conversation to a more private channel. Not everything benefits from being discussed across the open bands, and I suspect you are already aware that Marinagua has a way of… listening."

Another small pause, then the hook, delivered as if it were simple courtesy.

"I am available for a secure tri-vid exchange at your convenience. No urgency required, but I would not delay overlong. Situations involving offworld visitors—past or present—have a tendency to evolve once multiple parties begin taking interest."

The final line is almost conversational.

"If you are still interested in speaking, I will hold this channel open."

The transmission ends without flourish, leaving behind a silent request for connection authorization.

For a moment, no one speaks. The implication is clear enough without being stated: Verik is not the only one watching, and whatever window exists to shape the conversation is not going to remain open indefinitely.

Edrin

Edrin shifts his stance, eyes moving between Virel, Chaala, Bohdie, and Wilber. He lets the silence sit just long enough to matter, then exhales slightly.

"Well…" he says, tilting his head toward the console. "What do you want to do?"
Apr 26, 2026 5:27 am
"I doubt we can constrain who will know we're speaking with him, but we should be able to encrypt strong enough to delay anyone understanding what we're discussing. Acknowledge our existence and that we're from out of system. Let him know we're interested in understanding the situation on the ground, but not yet why. That we might be open to an arrangement for a local guide. Let him tell us what he might want in return." Chaala speaks quietly but directly. "Ultimately, your call Virel."
Apr 26, 2026 5:09 pm
Virel turns to the others. "It appears one of the captains is somewhat more than curious about us. Let us hear what he has to say. I suggest the rest of you remain out of view. Chaala should join me on screen and in Ironhand uniforms. We need not speak of them. Let him draw his own conclusions."

Virel retrieves an Ironhand jacket, if he is not already wearing one, and settles into position beside Chaala. As soon as all is ready, he inclines his head toward Edrin. "Please open the channel."

When the screen comes alive and Verik appears, Virel offers only the faintest smile, his expression otherwise unreadable. "This is Virel Kilmire," he says, then gestures lightly toward the woman beside him. "And Captain Chaala Angushlii of the Azure Voyager."

A measured pause follows.

"We appreciate your reaching out. From what we have observed, the situation on the ground appears as delicate as you suggested."

His eyes remain steady on Verik.

"Any additional context would be of value. And if local guidance proves necessary, we would be interested in hearing your thoughts."
Apr 26, 2026 9:09 pm
Chaala puts on her best "this is serious business" face and silently supports Virel.
Apr 27, 2026 1:20 pm
The console emits a soft tone as Virel’s authorization is accepted. The outgoing signal compresses, encrypts, and tightens into a narrow-band beam. For a brief moment, the system displays a cascading handshake exchange—layered cipher negotiation, rotating keys, and protocol alignment. The encryption suite stabilizes at a level consistent with high-grade commercial traffic, the kind used by well-equipped independent operators. The final handshake resolves cleanly.

Bohdie’s screen confirms it quietly: secure channel established.

A half-second later, the tri-vid feed activates.

Captain Jalen Verik appears seated in a well-lit command space aboard the Star’s Mercy. The background suggests a working bridge rather than a showpiece—functional displays, active readouts, and a crew that knows its business. Verik himself is composed, attentive, and very clearly studying the two figures now on his screen.

His eyes take in Virel first, then shift—just briefly—to Chaala. There is the faintest flicker of recognition as he notes the uniforms. Not one of the standard offworld patterns he has seen move throughthe Verstand-Jugartha Colonies, and not the same as the Scout markings he observed on Voss. Something structured, something deliberate, but unfamiliar. The observation is filed away without comment, but it is not missed.

When he speaks, his tone is measured and professional, carrying the cadence of someone used to negotiating across uncertain ground.

"Captain Kilmire. Captain Angushlii. I appreciate you accepting the channel."

He inclines his head slightly, acknowledging them both.

"You are correct in your assessment. ‘Delicate’ is one way to describe the situation. ‘Layered’ might be another. There are multiple interests at work here, and not all of them align… even when they appear to."

Verik leans back just slightly, giving the impression of space rather than pressure.

"As for context—yes, I can provide some. General conditions, how the tribes interact with offworld traffic, what tends to be tolerated and what tends to… create friction."

A brief pause follows, not hesitation, but calculation.

"Guidance is also possible, if it becomes necessary. Though I find it is best to determine whether it is necessary before committing to it."

His gaze remains steady, but there is a subtle shift now—less introductory, more direct.

"That said, I prefer clarity when I can get it. You’ve positioned yourselves as professionals, and I will respond in kind."

Another small pause, just long enough to make the next question land with intent.

"What exactly are you looking for?"

He does not press further. No follow-up, no elaboration. The question is left open, deliberate and controlled, inviting an answer but not chasing one.

The channel remains stable, the encryption holding firm, the connection clean.

And Verik waits.
Apr 27, 2026 9:47 pm
Bohdie scratches his head. If he had done this, he might have left all uniforms out. But now the fly is officially unzipped and he wonders how he can help. Then, "Tell him you are looking into new markets for a client who was formally well placed but has desired to relocate to newer trading grounds."
Apr 27, 2026 11:00 pm
Wilbur shakes his head slightly. He leans toward Virel, voice low and level.
"Tell him the truth. He'll find out soon enough — men like Verik always do. Better to appear trusting than to be caught dancing around it. And if we keep beating around the bush, we get no answers and lose his respect in the same breath."

He leaves it there. Not his call to make.
Apr 27, 2026 11:57 pm
Bohdie shoots a glance over to Wilbur instantly. Under his breath, he whispers dangerously, "That would have worked 10 minutes ago, before this charade. Now, it will be changing the story." Bohdie turns back to his panel, minding the feed.

To himself, he whispers,

While Verik speaks, Virel remains outwardly focused on the screen, his expression unreadable. Beneath the edge of the console, one hand taps quietly across a concealed datapad, opening a text channel for the others should they wish to offer guidance without interrupting the exchange.

With one hand Virel taps a brief note onto the datapad resting below the camera line: "Trading? No. Verik would know. Recovery, but not the reason why?"

When Verik finishes, Virel allows only the briefest pause. He glances casually at the datapad, as if pausing to gather his thoughts, giving the others a final moment to offer direction before he responds.
Apr 28, 2026 1:52 am
Bohdie types out, Hrut might really have set up trade here, but tell him whatever you want.
Apr 29, 2026 7:03 pm
The private text channel beneath the camera line begins to populate almost immediately as Verik’s question hangs in the air.

JEEM

Recommendation: answer the question directly with controlled scope. State objective as locating and assessing Scout service personnel previously arrived in system. He has had conversations with Voss and using vague terms to describe us or who we are seeking will frustrate our objective in this. This aligns with observed local discussion and minimizes contradiction with current presentation.

Edrin

We don’t need to dress it up as trade. He’ll see through that. Better to keep it simple—say we’re looking into a situation involving earlier visitors. Not everything about it, just enough to make it real. If we sound like we’re dodging, he’ll start setting the terms.

Just… don’t make it sound like we’re asking for help. We’re asking for context.

Amara

I’d avoid changing the story again. We already showed up in a way that suggests we’re organized and here for a reason. If we pivot too hard now, it’ll stand out. Maybe meet him halfway—acknowledge we’re looking into those earlier offworld visitors, but keep it framed as evaluation, not intervention.

And leave room for him to offer something. If he thinks we’re already halfway informed, he’ll try to fill in the gaps.

The channel goes quiet again, the cursor blinking on Virel’s datapad as Verik waits on the other end of the secure link.
Apr 30, 2026 8:14 pm
Bohdie reads the texts. He nods, thoughtfully, when he reads Amara’s. He quickly types, "I agree with Amara."
May 1, 2026 12:04 am
Chaala, being on screen, can't type out advice so keeps quiet and trusts her team.
May 1, 2026 2:27 am
Virel looks away for a moment, as if considering the question. In truth, his eyes flick briefly across the datapad and the words from the others. He makes a slight nod, as if having decided upon his words.

He looks back to Verik, a faint, controlled smile returning. "Just Virel Kilmire will do."

A small measured pause.

"We were sent to follow up on an earlier offworld arrival in this system. Before we take any action, we’re assessing the situation. From what we’ve observed, that situation is… layered. You appear to understand how it functions. That is why we’re speaking."
May 1, 2026 5:05 pm
Verik studies Virel for a moment longer than before, as if weighing the answer against something unspoken. Then he nods slowly.

"That is… a clearer statement of intent."

"Yes, there were offworlders who arrived some months ago. They entered through the usual channels, engaged with local elements, and—whether through misunderstanding or miscalculation—found themselves in conflict with established customs. That tends to create situations that do not resolve quickly."

He pauses briefly, fingers tapping once against the arm of his chair.

"You are correct that the situation is layered. It involves more than one tribe, more than one set of interests, and more than one interpretation of what ‘resolution’ looks like."

His gaze sharpens slightly, more focused now.

"I can provide information. But I do not do so in a vacuum. Context matters. Intent matters. And how you intend to involve yourselves matters most of all."

A small pause follows, deliberate.

"So before we go any further, I would prefer to meet you in person."

He leans back slightly, tone still calm but now unmistakably firm.

"Once I understand your direction—what you are willing to do, and what you are not—I can give you a more accurate picture of the situation."

Another pause, then a shift to something more practical.

"When you come down, I recommend you land within the commercial pads adjacent to my vessel. The starport is… observed. Arrivals are noted, and patterns are interpreted. Landing near a known operator gives your presence a context that is easier for others to process—and less likely to attract the wrong kind of attention."

His expression remains composed.

"It also allows me to receive you directly, rather than having you navigate the initial layers of protocol without guidance."

A faint, almost conversational tone returns.

"So the immediate question is not which tribe you need to speak with."

A beat.

"It’s how you intend to arrive—and how visible you want to be when you do."

He lets that settle.

"I can have a berth prepared near the Star’s Mercy. When you are ready, signal your approach, and I will ensure you are received."

The channel remains steady, Verik waiting—not impatiently, but with the quiet expectation that the next move now belongs to them.
May 3, 2026 5:34 pm
Virel turns to Chaala to see if she would like to respond, otherwise, he will continue.
May 3, 2026 10:16 pm
Chaala favors the Captain with a smile. "Your offer is appreciated. With the situation as 'layered' as you say, it is best to get some pleasantries out of the way while before we announce ourselves to the world and make manifest what they already suspect. Clearly, misunderstanding the situation could lead to difficulty as others have already found, so saying somethings out loud that might otherwise be unsaid is worthwhile. We appreciate your offer and would love to know what we can arrange so that we don't become yet another layer and so that our imminent arrival can benefit all parties involved."

Her question is direct enough to be clear, but vague enough to be shaped by Verik's experience: 'What do you get out of this?'
May 4, 2026 12:17 am
Verik listens without interruption, the faintest hint of a smile touching his expression as Chaala finishes. It is not amusement—it is recognition. He nods once, slowly.

"That… is the right question."

He leans back slightly, considering them for a moment before continuing.

"What I get out of this is straightforward. I deal in access, context, and outcomes that don’t create unnecessary problems—for my clients or for myself. If you arrive here and move cleanly through the situation, that reflects well on anyone associated with you. If you do not…"

He lets the thought trail off slightly.

"…that also has consequences."

A brief pause, then more direct.

"I am not looking to complicate your objective. But I am not in the habit of introducing unknown variables into a situation like this without understanding them first. That is why we meet."

His tone shifts, practical again.

"As for your arrival—yes, we can proceed."

He glances slightly off-screen, likely checking a display.

"I will have a commercial pad prepared adjacent to the Star’s Mercy. Your approach should be routine—no unusual maneuvers, no attempt to avoid notice. That tends to draw more attention than it avoids."

Another small pause.

"Transmit your approach vector when you are within range, and I will ensure the appropriate parties understand that you are arriving under my observation."

A final look back to the screen.

"That will give you the cleanest entry you’re likely to get here."

The faintest hint of that earlier expression returns.

"Once you are on the ground, we will speak."

The channel remains steady, the implication clear: you have your way in. Now you have to take it.
May 4, 2026 6:07 pm
Amara
When Verik mentions the landing at the commercial pad, Amara types out on his work station and sends message to Chaala, Virel and the others;
'Harlan and I have worked on the fly-by-wire connections for the Cutter, if we want to use the Cutter to fly us in.'
May 4, 2026 9:17 pm
Chaala acknowledges Amara with a quick finger signal where the camera can't see it.

"One more quick question. Within these layers, what is the status of the offworld craft and any crew that remain with it?"
May 4, 2026 9:52 pm
Good question, Bohdie thinks to himself. He had to admit that the buearacratic language was particularly well spoken by both Virel and Chaala. And it seems to be bringing them ever closer to their goal. But his senses are alert. An ancient Terran saying about the spider web tingles comes to mind.

Bohdie’s internal thoughts:
There is no doubt that we are walking into the spider’s web when we land. But I do not believe the problem is Verik. Nor do I think that whatever the Harrier and Dominicus walked into constitutes ‘normal’ for the Alejia. But there are just too many unknowns.
May 5, 2026 12:56 am
Verik listens carefully to Chaala’s question, and this time the pause is just a fraction longer. Not hesitation—consideration. When he responds, his tone remains even, but there is a subtle shift indicating the question has sharpened his understanding of their interests.

"That is a more specific line of inquiry."

"The offworld craft you’re referring to remains where it was left—intact, undisturbed, and… observed. It has not been seized, and it has not been dismantled. That, in itself, should tell you something about how the situation is being handled."

His gaze narrows slightly, not suspicious, but analytical.

"As for the individual you mentioned—yes, I am aware of him. He has maintained a… low profile. There has been no direct interference with his position, though that does not mean he is without attention. Nothing on Marinagua exists entirely outside of notice."

A brief pause follows, then Verik leans back slightly, drawing a conclusion.

"If you are asking this question, I assume you are considering whether that craft—and its occupant—are intended to remain in place or depart once you arrive."

Another small pause, more practical now.

"That is something I can make inquiries about. Quietly. Whether the current understanding is that the craft is to remain as it is, or whether its departure would be… acceptable."

His expression remains composed, but there is a subtle shift—he is now testing them again.

"That said, if your intention is to consolidate your position on the ground, it would be worth considering whether bringing your own vessel down simplifies matters rather than complicates them. Multiple offworld assets tend to draw attention—particularly when they begin to move."

He lets that hang for a moment.

"Decide how you intend to present yourselves, and I will make the appropriate arrangements."

The channel remains steady, Verik watching—not pressing, but clearly expecting that each answer is helping him build a more complete picture of who, exactly, he is dealing with.

OOC:
I hope things are well for everyone. Seven days without a post is not good.
There is a question from Verik on how the team will present them selves
And
Will the team attempt to fly the cutter back to the ISS Harrier
Or
Desend in the ISS Azure Voyager?
And will the team decide/plan for the next steps or will the team fly-by-seat-of-their-pants????
May 8, 2026 10:11 pm
Chaala mutes the comm and turns to face Virel, ensuring her lips are off camera before speaking.

"I don't really like either option, but unless we want to scrub all the markings off Voyager, someone's going to recognize she's a Scout ship, so I don't think using the Cutter loses us anything. I prefer not having her tied to the ground, so I guess I'm favoring the Cutter. It'll get Voss off the ground, too, which will be good for his morale. We can still go with non-Scout uniform and be what we officially are, off books assistance."
May 9, 2026 2:24 am
Virel nods slightly. "Yes. The less Verik, and anyone else listening now or hearing of this later, understands about our connection to the Scouts, the better. We have already made it clear that we are not traders here to threaten existing markets or agreements. That leaves only one concern: that our arrival disrupts the balance already in place.

The Cutter seems the most reasonable choice. Its movement may draw attention, but likely less than bringing Voyager down. Once Voss is aboard, we can speak with him more freely about the local dynamics and decide who is best suited to return planetside."

As he finishes, Virel briefly glances toward the others beyond the camera’s view, giving a small nod toward the datapad, an invitation for any further observations.
May 9, 2026 1:52 pm
Wilbur speaks in a measured tone, eyes still on the screen.

"The Cutter is already on the ground with Scout markings. Everyone who cares already knows what it is. Using it will definitely show us as Scouts, which is not a problem for me — on the contrary, it sends a clear signal.

My concern is the movement itself. A cutter that lifts without warning and comes down somewhere else sends a signal we can't control. We don't know how that reads on the ground, or how the tribes interpret it."

Before we commit, we should ask Verik directly. He has the local picture. We're making this decision without it, and that's exactly the kind of thing that derails a mission before it starts.

"Verik has already alluded to this. I think we should let him make his inquiries. He implied that bringing our ship down would simplify things, but it also shows information we may not be ready to give and puts more crew at risk than we might be willing to do. If it merely 'simplifies' things that doesn't make it the right choice."

Edrin
Edrin looks at Chaala then to Wilber and then to Virel and calmly says;
"…So I am clear...we let Verik make inquires about the Cutter leaving and returning with some of us?"

Edrin then looks at Wilber then back to Chaala;
" I agree with Wilber that the Alejia may see this as odd that we waited basically six months of time before we acted in moving the cutter and returning with more people? That may make the Alejia think that it takes us six months to bring more people in or am I off base? "

he pauses for a moment then continues;
"I agree with Virel that Voss will give us first hand information"
May 10, 2026 9:15 pm
"They are an alien species of which we know little. They will take it how they take it. Most likely different Alejia will take it different ways. Those who have been dealing with Dominicus will most likely take it differently than those who have not. Verik's answer will tell us some of that, but I don't think we make our decisions based entirely on how they will be percieved. If we give the impression that we have been monitoring for six months they will think we know more than we do, but they will wonder why we let Voss sit there alone. I do not think many will think that for long. Most likely more of them will come to the correct conclusion, that we have come after they did not come back. They may wonder why we used the cutter instead of landing with our ship, but, while the free captains will know differently, they may suspect that our people build larger ships that cannot land and use the Cutters as our means of doing so. They have certainly seen larger ships than the free traders, with Niparoo landing vastly larger vessels, but they won't have seen a wide variety."
May 10, 2026 9:47 pm
Wilbur is quiet for a moment.
"Understood. My concern isn't the Alejia — it's the variables we could resolve before we move and haven't. Verik has the local picture. We don't.

We're not blind, but we could see better. That's all I'm flagging.

OOC:
I must say this is a good IC conversation
May 11, 2026 6:11 am
Bohdie listens, rather than interjects. He waits until the conversation seems to taper off. "Disturbing the cutter might be best if advised against. First of all, having the cutter on the ground could be a point of morale for Dominicus and her crew. Second, we do not know how that would be perceived by the various factions within the Alejia. But more important is that while Dominicus’ crew aren’t’prisoners’, it’s clear they are not free to go. And for the cutter to suddenly leave where it is and then come back, land next to Verik’s ship and disembark more, different people not going to be seen as anything resembling normal. More than that is that it marks us as more of the same and could taint Verik’s position as well. So what if our markings are similar. What do they know… what does anyone out on this hind end of space know of the Imperium or the scout service. There are two things that are already going wrong here. First, we have run afoul of analysis paralysis. We are spending so much time trying to figure out all the ins and outs and not enough time doing. And the second is failing to realize a good plan executed right away is better than the perfect plan executed too late. We’ve already unzipped. We can wait on Verik, but really, the next move is ours."
May 11, 2026 7:32 pm
Victor listened to all the conversation and planning. He then raised his hand and said, "Why don't we deploy two teams? We have tried to understand Aleija's language and went so far as to create a translator. We can try to infiltrate the least prominent Aleija faction and try to trade for information. Maybe we can get undercover and move closer to Dominicus. Where another team meets up with Verik. I am sure Verik knows that we are somehow related to the ISS."
May 11, 2026 8:45 pm
Wilbur says nothing. The set of his jaw says he disagrees. The decision isn't his to make.
May 11, 2026 8:45 pm
"I love the idea of infiltrating, but discarded it because we're not two meter tall birds and I got the impression that they know all the humans they work with. Otherwise, we'd be using Brodie's expertise more directly. I don't think there's any undercover opportunity here. If it looks different on the ground, I'm all for it, especially since the Alejia won't know we can understand them as well as we can." Chaala sighs.

She looks back to Brodie, "Points taken about the Cutter. We'll wait to see what Verik says, but I still think it's the better option, since it keeps Voyager in reserve. I don't like the idea of her getting stuck on the ground with the threat that if she lifts off something could happen to Dominicus and the crew. I also don't know how tightly controlled Dominicus and the rest are, they might not even know if the Cutter moves. If they do, they will know other Scouts are here which, if it were me, would bouy me more than the Cutter moving would worry me. We know we're coming into a delicate situation, and I want to keep some of our resources outside that situation so if diplomacy fails we have more options." She pauses, "Speaking of which, I don't think we go in fully armed and armored, but I want us to have a full loadout available on whichever craft is on the ground with us."
May 11, 2026 9:08 pm
GM Comment: Stalker05 was 'out-of-the-net' so he may not be up to speed on the Alejia.

A post will come up soon from Verik on his inquiries.
May 12, 2026 12:48 am
Bohdie listens but shakes his head. "It'd be great if we had some sort of fleet armada or something. Or, really, the luxury of time to really fill in all the blanks. But sometimes, you just have to roll the hard six." Bohdie takes a deep breath and lowers his voice. Softening the edge in his voice, he says, while looking Chaala directly in the eyes (empathy, not adversary), "Look, I understand what you’ve been through and how that can make even the most risk-craving person take pause. But in the Intelligence field, there are times when you’ve got to put it all on the table. I get it. You weren’t expecting to have to make this decision. You may feel you’re not ready. Here’s a little secret I’ve learned… nobody is. Now, you’re in charge. Unless you’d like to designate someone else. As a member of this crew, I will back your play, whether I think it is the right one or not. But one of the immutable laws of the universe is the law of diminishing returns. We’ve already past that point when we are talking about lives on the ground.

Bohdie takes a breath and swallows hard. "I've been hesitant to bring this up because, frankly, there’s been nothing I’ve been able to uncover either way… but has anyone considered that they could be in the hands, not of the Alejia, but of the Niparoo people? And we already know they are definitely in the Intelligence business. What information could they have gleaned from those poor souls down there? What kind of programming might they be imparting? As long as they have been out of touch…". Bohdie’s voice trails off. The expression on his face, pain shows briefly before he pulls it back together and masks further emotion. He sits back in his chair, eyes fixated on Chaala, not in an adversarial manner, but as a man waiting for a sporting decision.
May 12, 2026 3:43 am
Virel looks toward Bohdie and gives a small nod.

"Yes. Any decision is better than none at all. However, there is another option we seem to have overlooked: the Harrier itself. The people on the ground are already aware of that vessel’s existence. Landing it rather than the Voyager may be an option worth considering. At the same time, the Voyager could remain mobile and continue orbital observation trying to locate the rest of the crew, while a smaller team addresses the situation on the ground and continues from a diplomatic standpoint."

A slight pause follows.

"Yes… perhaps moving the Cutter creates more complications than bringing down another ship already connected to the situation."

He turns back toward Bohdie and Chaala.

"But I think the larger point has been made. We need to make a choice and begin implementing plans to recover the rest of the crew, even if new information emerges while we are doing so."

OOC:
The trick isn’t getting it down. It’s getting it back up again. Most ships like the Harrier would suffer too much damage during atmospheric interface and/or don’t have the power to climb back out of the gravity well with the added burden of atmospheric friction and some very serious parasitic drag issues.
May 12, 2026 6:22 am
"You know, I hadn't thought about the possibility that the Niparoo could have them. I think it's unlikely, though. They have less to gain, and more to lose, by messing with Scouts and they had other opportunities elsewhere. They could be connected to the Alejia polity that has them, but we've seen no real interaction with the Alejia, which continues to ask the question of what they're doing here at all. They have had several large ships through here in the time Dominicus has been out of contact. If the Niparoo have physical custody, odds are they're off world by now, but, again, I doubt it. We may, eventually, have to deal with them. It would actually be easier if they do have them. They're a commercial interest at their core and we know how to negotiate with that."

Chaala nods to Brodie. "As for the ship and landing, let's hear what Verik has to say. I'm still leaning towards using the Cutter. We might even put Harrier in a more visible orbit and give the impression that she's been away and returned and is recalling her boat. Will mean we can keep Voyager a hidden asset while presenting a reasonable story. If Verik indicates that moving the cutter presents any significant risk, we go with Brodie's plan. We'll have to allocate crew to both ships, since we need to have a deadline after which Harrier heads back to Pautho if we're unable to check in."
May 12, 2026 7:06 pm
Verik does not answer immediately. The delay is long enough to suggest he is thinking, but not long enough to feel evasive. When he does speak again, his expression remains composed, though his tone has become more practical than conversational.

"I can make those inquiries. Quietly. But understand what that means here. I will not ask the question in the form you just asked it. That would draw attention to the wrong thing. I will ask it as a matter of traffic handling and local expectation—whether an offworld auxiliary craft currently under observation can relocate without creating a political misunderstanding."

He pauses slightly, allowing that distinction to settle.

"As for how it will be viewed, there are two different answers. If the cutter lifts without context and returns to its original position, some will read that as the offworlders testing limits. Others will ask who authorized the movement and why it was necessary. It may not be treated as hostile, but it will be noticed. Everything at the starport is noticed."

Verik’s gaze shifts briefly, likely toward some unseen display, then returns.

"If the cutter relocates to a commercial pad adjacent to the Star’s Mercy, that tells a different story. It places the movement inside a known commercial pattern. It suggests you are arriving under observation by an established operator rather than maneuvering independently through local custom. That does not make you invisible. Quite the opposite. But it makes your visibility easier for others to interpret."

His tone remains even, but there is a clear preference underneath the words.

"The original location carries history. Returning there preserves that history, including all the questions attached to it. Landing near my berth creates a new context. Not a neutral one—no such thing exists here—but a cleaner one."

A brief pause follows.

"Now, regarding the earlier offworlders."

Verik’s expression becomes more guarded—not closed, but careful.

"I can tell you what is generally understood among those who pay attention. The offworld party did not simply vanish, and they were not treated as common prisoners. That distinction matters here. They became entangled in a matter of custom, standing, and tribal obligation. Their presence has been useful to several parties and inconvenient to several more."

He leans forward slightly.

"I do not have a confirmed location I am prepared to state over this channel. If someone claims they can give you that cleanly and cheaply, they are either lying or selling you someone else’s trap."

Another small pause.

"What I can say is this: the group is believed to remain alive, and the matter has not concluded because no faction has yet found a resolution that preserves enough face, leverage, and advantage for all concerned. That is why your arrival matters. You may be seen as a way to resolve the matter—or as a new complication to be used inside it."

Verik lets the words sit for a moment before continuing.

"If your intent is to recover them, then the first mistake would be acting as though this is a simple detention. The second mistake would be acting as though everyone holding a piece of the matter wants the same outcome."

His expression softens slightly, but only slightly.

"My recommendation is this: allow me to inquire about the cutter’s relocation as traffic and reception, not as extraction. Bring the cutter to the commercial pad beside Star’s Mercy, if that is the craft you choose to use. Arrive cleanly. Arrive visibly. Let the first interpretation of your arrival be that you are seeking guidance, not forcing a decision. This may take a few days, is this okay with you?"

He holds their gaze through the tri-vid.

"Once we meet in person, I can tell you more. And I can tell you what questions are safe to ask before you ask them in front of the wrong people."
May 12, 2026 9:06 pm
Chaala again positions herself so lips cannot be read and makes sure the comm is muted. "I think a few more days is OK to get this right. We can use the time effectively, see if we can map out the changes to the communication pattern once Verik starts his inquiries. If possible, track his movements and see who he talks to. We can continue to refine the translators as well. All told, it will not be lost time and puts in a better place whichever ship we arrive on."
May 12, 2026 10:29 pm
Wilbur is quiet for a moment.
"This is not an extraction. It's a complex negotiation with moving parts we don't fully see yet.".
May 12, 2026 10:53 pm
Virel turns slightly toward Wilbur. "Yes… unfortunately it is."

A brief pause follows before he continues.

"And I find myself wondering what Verik truly gains from involving himself in this. The answer to that question may tell us how much we can trust him… or whether we should begin considering other paths as well."
May 13, 2026 12:42 am
"We can only speculate, but it seems that some Alejia groups will benefit from this being resolved. Most notably those responsible for the spaceport. I can imagine that having them in your debt would be good for someone in Verik's position. We don't know who else, but we have reason to believe that they're not the only group. And diffierent ways of resolving benefit different groups in different ways, so we'll need to anticipate being played by everyone we encounter and some we won't. We also need to be aware of who loses by this being resolved. I don't know that anyone wants it to go on forever but there are competing versions of resolved that have kept it in it's current state for a long time."
May 13, 2026 11:41 am
Wilbur reflects for a moment.
"If Verik is as shrewd as I suspect, he figured out we are Scouts early. Having friends in the ISS is a significant return for a free trader — nothing illegal. A recommendation opens doors in the Imperium he would never have known existed. Current charts alone are worth considerable credit.

And he becomes the man who resolved this. That carries weight out here too—both amongst free-traders and tribes. And all this with very limited risk.
"

Thirty-six hours pass before Verik returns on the secure channel. During that time, the traffic pattern around the Ad Hoc Starport changes in small ways rather than dramatic ones. A few short-range transmissions tighten around the commercial pad net. Two merchant-band relays cycle through repeated authentication bursts. A low-power ground station near the commercial apron goes active for several minutes at a time, then falls quiet again. Nothing suggests alarm, but the system is clearly no longer ignoring the question of the cutter.

When Verik appears on the tri-vid again, he looks rested, composed, and slightly less informal than before. The background behind him is the same compartment aboard Star’s Mercy, but there is a quiet shift in posture. This is not the exploratory conversation anymore. This is a broker returning with an answer.

"I have made the inquiries. Carefully."

He gives the word enough weight to make clear that the shape of the question mattered as much as the answer.

"The cutter may relocate. That is the important part. The movement will not be treated as a hostile act, an escape attempt, or a seizure of disputed property, provided it is handled as traffic and reception. Not extraction. Not military repositioning. Not a demonstration."

Verik pauses, allowing the limits to settle.

"The preferred interpretation is this: the offworld auxiliary craft is being moved from an old point of contact to a commercial receiving berth under recognized sponsorship. That sponsorship would be mine. The receiving berth would be the empty commercial pad adjacent to Star’s Mercy. Your approach would be announced, ordinary, and unhurried."

His expression remains neutral, but his eyes sharpen slightly.

"If the cutter lifts and returns to its original position, that will be tolerated, but not understood. It keeps the craft tied to the original incident and invites others to continue interpreting it through that history. Some will ask why it moved at all. Some will ask why it returned. Some will decide the answer before you provide one."

A small pause.

"If the cutter lifts and comes to the commercial pad beside my vessel, that creates a cleaner interpretation. Not a private one. Do not mistake me on that point. It will be seen. But it will be seen as arrival through a known commercial channel rather than independent maneuver through local space."

He leans back slightly.

"There are conditions. No sudden ascent profile. No weapons posture. No evasive routing. No attempt to mask the movement. The more ordinary it looks, the less dangerous it becomes. File it as a relocation for reception and consultation. Keep the language boring. Boring language prevents exciting reactions."

Verik lets that faintly dry observation sit for a moment.

"As for the occupant, the engineer aboard the cutter is not expected to be interfered with during the move, provided he departs aboard the craft and does not attempt to transfer separately through the port. If he remains aboard, he remains part of the craft’s movement. That is simpler for everyone."

His expression grows more guarded.

"Understand something: this does not mean every faction likes the movement. It means no one with immediate standing at the port has chosen to make the movement a point of open objection. That is a very different thing, and you should treat it as such."

Another pause follows.

"Regarding the earlier offworld party, I have less to give you over this channel than you want. But I can give you this much. Their status has not degraded in the way one would expect if this were simple captivity. They remain alive, and they remain politically useful. That usefulness is one reason they have not been discarded. It is also one reason they have not been released."

Verik’s tone stays measured, but there is a clear warning inside it.

"Their location is not a thing I will state here. Not because I am withholding it for sport, and not because I lack avenues to pursue it. Because naming a place too early may make that place less safe, not more. You are not the only people listening for changes in pattern."

He looks directly into the pickup.

"If you come down beside Star’s Mercy, I can tell you more in person. I can also tell you which questions to ask first, which ones to delay, and which ones not to ask until you understand who benefits from hearing them."

A brief pause.

"My recommendation remains the same. Bring the cutter. Bring only the people you need for the first conversation. Keep your ship where she gives you options. Let the cutter’s movement say one thing only: you are arriving to consult before acting."

His expression softens just enough to become almost cordial.

"If you do that, I can receive you cleanly. I cannot make the situation safe. No honest broker would promise that. But I can make the first step legible. Here, that matters more than most offworlders understand."

Verik waits a moment, then adds one final practical note.

"When you are ready, transmit your relocation notice on the commercial traffic band. I will answer in the clear and acknowledge reception. After that, follow the assigned vector to the pad beside Star’s Mercy. Do not improvise unless you have to."

The secure channel holds steady, and Verik falls silent. The offer is still there, but now it has edges: the cutter can move, Voss can leave with it, and the next step will be visible to everyone who matters.

GM - Actions?

OOC:
I have to head out for an event this evening but will be able to respond tomorrow. Just as a note, while Verik likely knows we have a vessel, we've never used her name (if we mentioned a name it was just Voyager) in any communications with him, so I want to be clear if he used the full name and that was not just an error on the part of the GM as scribe.

Corrected in the post and you are right.

Bohdie breathes a silent sigh of relief. At least for the moment, the matter is not going to upset the balance of Dominicus and crew’s situation.

Bohdie takes a deep breath, "Beyond that, I’d say we go with Verik’s recommendation as the best option. At some point, we are going to have to trust someone. Even if his motivation is greed, that is a lot easier to read and deal with on a human than on someone whose language we may never fully understand."
OOC:
Edited because I hadn’t read far enough before I responded.

"Sounds like the cutter is our best choice and we have a blueprint for how to move it without making more waves than we have to. We still have some things to get in order before we make the move. Foremost is who's going, but beyond that, we need to decide if we want to contact Captains Cox or Raines, who both preached caution and Raines explicitly offered guidance though his idea of a friendly gesture might not match ours. Brodie, I think this falls under intelligence gathering, so your call if and who we call before we make our official contact to start things moving. Once we do that, we transfer crew who's going down plus a pilot to Harrier and Voyager goes into hiding for the moment. They'll follow the cutter with every scope they have and I want them to see the open hull that can't land, not the top of the line courier."

Bohdie nods at the cue. Having spent a lot of time working on various projects for the potential surface missions, he had already considered whether or not to contact the other two Free Trader Captains. "There are a number of reasons that went into selecting Verik as our point of contact, including the fact that he seems to be the most integrated into the Alejia social structure and certainly has the best grasp of the laws and social mores of their society. I believe that to contact the other two captains at this point would only serve to alienate our best contact to this point.

"While Verik may stand to gain, whether financially or by additional reputation, by helping us, we should be aware, and therefore cautious, that he stands to lose at least as much. And we do not know how adversarial the situation between these three is. So my recommendation is that we actively do no more than what has already been discussed. Verik indicated we should use the standard commercial procedure in moving the cutter and announcing our arrival aboard it. Since it is the standard procedure and standard frequencies will be used, I submit that the other two captains expect this and would, therefore, accept this as appropriate notification and contact, at least until we’ve landed and gotten a chance to speak with Verik in person and in private."

Victor didn't add anything else as the tense discussion was going on. When it was agreed that there would be movement, he gave his opinion, "I agree that Verik is using this opportunity to gain as much influence as possible. But it also seems that the situation down there is at an impasse and nothing was moving beforehand. Us arriving and taking some action will start the movement. Which begs the question: what have these captains established beforehand to cause this so-called peaceful impasse? If we are questioning other captains, then we can ask why there is no movement within the Aleija even after the arrival of offworlders. What or who is keeping everything stagnant?"

Wilbur nods.
"Verik had more to say in private — and he was careful about what he said on an open channel. We should take that seriously and hold the harder questions until we're face to face.

Before we move, I'd like a fallback plan in place. Something we can execute quickly if the first conversation goes sideways. We shouldn't be deciding that on the ground.
"

Chaala nods at Wilbur. "We can plan, but only in broad strokes since everything changes once we learn the situation on thr ground. We can have an escape plan if things go so sideways that we think Dominicus and the crew are lost for good and another for if we have to break them out, let's call it undiplomatically, but otherwise the plan is to fall back to the Cutter and not make things worse. We can add to that plan as soon as we have enough information to do so. As for more direct extraction, we should map out locations where the cutter or Voyager can land and give each of those locations code names which we can use to indicate where to regroup without anyone currently on the ground knowing where we mean."

She pauses, "I wish I'd been allowed to bring more of my own gear. Going into this without a body pistol and other concealable gear makes me a bit more nervous. We need to load arms and armor, and anything else we might want, onto the cutter, since we're not likely coming back before action if there is any."
OOC:
I know we weren't allowed to bring our own guns and, I think, our armor, but if we were allowed our armor, Chaala will load her personal armor with the gear since it's theoretically concealable.
