Staging testing: Systems

Staging now has code that moved everything about getting systems to v1.5. I did find an error on the landing page, but it's related to a games endpoint and already exists in prod. I'm going to try to fix it when I get to the relevant endpoints.

From what I can see, here are the affected locations:
  • Systems page
  • My chars
  • Char create/edit
  • Game create/edit
If someone finds any other locs, let me know.

I'd appreciate folks testing it out to make sure systems show up as they do on prod, that games with their own char sheets show them, and those without show the custom char sheet, etc. I have another feature (the gamers list) ready for testing once this looks good.

Test character (7th Sea) created and edited. <https://staging.gamersplane.com/characters/7thsea_2e/34816/>

Test game created too. <https://staging.gamersplane.com/games/5152/>

Adding the character to the game worked, but I had to reload the page to see the result of clicking the add button.

Also, I got an e-mail notification for my own game creation, which is funny but not a problem.

This is specifically around systems. Did they all appear as expected? The systems page showing all systems/details/links, able to see your chars and their systems, the links working, etc?

They seem to be in the list. I'm not familiar with the canonical sheets and system features (I use custom for everything normally), so just tested with a semi-random pick from the first ones in the list.

I do have a notification tick for 7th Sea, so at least that part identified the system correctly, it seems.

Everything seem to be working fine - Publishers are now listed, Genres present on many games, links to buying books work. Made a test game and test sheet - all visible and working as intended.

I'll admit, I rarely use the "System" tab, but while perusing it on both staging and here, I've noticed some peculiarities that I thought might be useful to bring up:

* Clicking on "Find Games" shows a list of all games, regardless of picked system (I would assume the intended behavior for clicking "Find Games" under particular system would be to be show list of games for that system).

* Clicking on "Start a Game" works, but always sets the "System" and "Allowed Character Sheets" fields to "Custom" (assumed behavior would be to set them to the system under which "Start a Game" was chosen?)

I think setting these options to the behaviors I mentioned might make the "Systems" tab more useful, because, to be honest, right now I rarely, if ever, use it. If I need to start a new game or check the games list I do it through the "Games" tab.

Another thing I wanted to bring up is the situation with the "World of Darkness" system. It currently is the only system covering the variety of White Wolf's games. Between both families of White Wolf's creations - classic or old World of Darkness (Vampire the Masquerade, Werewolf the Apocalypse, Mage the Ascension, etc) and new World of Darkness - mostly known nowadays as Chronicles of Darkness (Vampire the Requiem, Werewolf the Forsaken, Mage the Awakening, etc) - there is a lot that's missing. I think putting different game lines in the list would boost their visibility and help in other way - the more links for purchase of different books there is, the more is the potential to cover some of the hosting costs with referrals. Considering the site runs adless, I think the majority of us would be glad to use the referrals to buy books we were already planning on buying. On that note, I think visibility of the referrals could be boosted somehow, as I only now remembered that links for that were on the bottom of the page.

Also, the character sheet for current "World of Darkness" system is actually a generic character sheet for "Chronicles" instead of "old WoD", hence making its uses quite limited.

EDIT: the links for Drivethru store on both staging and prod leads to their old domain (I think), drivethrustuff.com instead of current drivethrurpg.com. The browser warns that the old domain is not SSL'd and I shouldn't go there. It does redirect to the new domain if you choose to go to plain http, but the warning might spook less technically versed users, so it might be prudent to update the link.

Hopefully at least some of that was helpful. Thanks for the hard work and a great site!

Added detail about WoD and CoD: those are settings; the system names are Storyteller System (of which there are plenty of editions both in terms of game lines and numbers, not all of which are the same), Storytelling System (single edition), and IIRC God-Machine Chronicles or something (please correct me, new-edition CoD players).

It's a good correction, but I didn't think it was worth mentioning. At the end of the day people look for game lines in the systems list, I think, instead of actual names of those systems (so DnD instead of d20, Dungeon World instead of Powered by the Apocalypse, Vampire the Masquerade instead of Storyteller System).

People do look for game lines, yes. Though the sheets of e.g. VtM Revised, V20, and V5, are not entirely compatible system-wise. Really I'm not sure if there's a neat way to categorise these things without needing to constantly update them to ensure everything matches up, which would be too much work. I'm not sure what to suggest, as things like system/sheet compatibility, desired notification categories, &c. may not even line up. Just figured to straighten out / point out part of the WoD/ST (variants), CoD/ST, CoD/GMC ambiguities.

I noticed this during my development. This was part of a chance made by Adam that I'm having trouble fixing, and may end up waiting for v2.

This is also something I'll have to address in v2.

WoD stuff
This is actually part of why I want to get to v2 ASAP. I want to build a modular system to build new character sheets with to make char sheet development faster. But this is also why in the current version, there are systems with and without character sheets. Definitely something we can discuss in more detail.

Great callout! I'll have these changed.

Same. But the page automatically refreshed when I deleted a character.
