The Romanian Forests

Romania’s forests cover roughly 27–30% of the country, include some of Europe’s largest tracts of old‑growth and virgin woodland (estimated 150,000–200,000 ha). It hosts a high diversity of temperate forest types—over 150 natural forest ecosystem types across gradients from lowland oak and hornbeam to beech, fir and spruce communities. Romania’s forests are species‑rich refuges for large mammals (brown bear, wolf, lynx), numerous bird species, and diverse flora growing under the forest canopies.

The largest continuous forest blocks and most old‑growth stands are in the Carpathian Mountains. Here, you will find the majority of Romania’s virgin and quasi‑virgin forests. In the lowlands and along the rivers, the forests consist of Oak and hornbeam varieties. Poplar and willow are found along the upper riverbanks. Alder wetlands occur along rivers and floodplains.
