Despite Torrance's best efforts, or perhaps because of it, they were about to be late for school.

How did this happen? What will you do, if anything, to try to make it in time?
OOC:
Welcome to your first post, but read the main thread first!
Apart from the prompt, consider a brief mention of: How did you spend summer break? What were you most looking forward to at school this year? What are you dreading?
Jan 25, 2026 4:54 pm
The truth is somewhere between "when you dont have to try hard in class you don't feel the need to get to class on time" and that Torrence had better (or at least more interesting) research rabbitholes to dive down last night. Besides, missing a hoo-ra, team-spirit, do-your-best speech wouldn't be a tragedy.
Torrence is making a brisk walk to class from his car, enough to make an effort, but not truely rushed.

Torrence's summer was.
Empty.
With the last kid getting older Torrence's parents decided to go on a cruise and set him up in a little apartment, so his summer was moving and settling and then.... being settled and not knowing why that all just happened.
Weirdly he is looking forward to school, just being something he understands. Put in time, solve whatever problen the teachers give you to prove you paid attention and get good grades.
He hasnt thought ahead enough to dread anything because, mentally, this school is just a step to a master's degree or two.
OOC:
I may have done a reverse image search to find the source of that pic.

Teenagers on the cusp of adulthood weren't typically given to superstition and other such easily-dismissed thoughts. But if there were a chance for hindsight years from now, the Awakened ones of the Class of '26 might be able look back to as early as their first day of school to realise that change was in the ether. Perhaps it was the greater weave of fate that pushed against their coming back, as if delaying them, keeping them away from the penumbral shores, from what was about to happen.

But they wouldn't have known that of course. To them, the situation was simply that they would be late. The car Torrance's parents arranged for him was one of those car dealership trades, enough to sputter along, but as Torrance found out up the long driveway to the campus, every other car whizzed past his, and it even struggled to keep pace with the school buses ahead of him. He got past the gate while it was yet to be closed, but it was hard to say if he was going to make it to assembly on time.
OOC:
Time to warm up your dice! You will be late for school unless you make a succesful Ability roll of your choice. Narratively justify in your next post whichever one you choose to roll. Alternatively you may use a relevant Sphere power, which for this particular situation will automatically succeed as coincidental magic, but magic was used nonetheless ;)

It wasn't that Torrance was trying to get to school on time, more that he felt like he should. As he was driving to school he just happened to know what lane to switch into to get out of any traffic, that he was just able to get through green lights, that he just happened to choose the roght backroads the couple times he did.
It was, of course, just very lucky coincidence.
Jan 30, 2026 4:14 am
It was always an irrational satisfaction of any driver to have the lights favour them, or for the chosen route to be thankfully clearer of heavy traffic, and it wasn't as if Torrance had thought to rely on any real-time navigational map to highlight which were the jammy roads with the slow crawl of cars. Did the car also feel like it was running faster? In any case, Torrance pulled up to one of the student parking lots with time to spare, although the arrival of his old beat-up jalopy turned a few heads from the other student drivers.
OOC:
I like the fact you had randomly rolled Time, which is all about things going faster. Will you be considering to put some dots in Time? Magick is in the air, and I'm just hinting at that slightly. Btw I assumed it's an old car since you only have Resources 1.

Now head over to the main thread!
Feb 3, 2026 2:39 pm
OOC:
Yeah I am considering it ut, we will see how things shake out but I am letting the story decide my magick.
Yeah I think it is the same car as both my siblings had, so several years old. I think it was worked on and working before I got it, but ... still it has its age, we will see.

Torrance wasted no time in following Marston out of the multi-purpose hall, even as some of the other seniors began to disperse, with the freshmen already herded away. It wasn't too difficult to tag along, he was used to people ignoring him all the time when he made his way around campus, which was why it was always surprising that Sera always knew where to find him.

Marston took the stairs down one floor, which led him to the gymnasium hall. Torrance already knew from Minsoo in their group chat that a similar thing had happened there. He snuck himself amongst the students there as Marston repeated his announcement. The same thing was taking place: teachers were on hand to bring the freshies to their homerooms, and the rest of the students were told to leave the premises as well. He could look for Joe and Minsoo if he wanted to, but decided to continue to stick close to Marston.

The Vice-Principal, having made his announcements, looked to be headed back to the general office in the Admin block. If Torrance were to continue to tail him all the way back, he would stick out more and more once they were away from the chaotic hubbub of the orientation venues.

But Torrance had decided to stick to his plan as long as he could in the hope that he could catch some conversation or other. Thankfully, his persistence paid off. The last he saw of Strom was in the hall, but somehow the professor had caught up with Marston along the way. "... seismic anomaly my ass. That was a -"
OOC:
MUltiple successes on the Stealth means Torrance is able to follow so far. For eavesdropping, I'll need a Perception+Alertness.

... mass awakening event. We need to quarantine ..." Strom started to rebuke Marston before Marston paused him by stopping in his tracks and turning around to speak with Torrance!

"Drakesmith, was it?" The Vice-Principal put on a genial smile, "No more classes today?" Marston did not seem to realise that Torrance was one of the seniors that he had just dismissed from school. Just behind him, Strom scowled but kept his mouth immediately shut.

Torrance had been discovered, but Marston did not immediately call him out. How would he weasel out of this situation? And whatever were the two staff members talking about?
OOC:
Successes on the eavesdropping means Torrance does hear some key words. But you've run out of successes on the Stealth! How will Torrance get out of this?
Mar 5, 2026 7:05 pm
OOC:
Almost no info.
Torrance is going to do a useless babble about wondering what was going on, without asking, but in a way that would just get him mentally dismissed by the staff.

Rolls

MAN + Subterfuge - (2d10+3d10)

(56) + (196) = 27

Mar 6, 2026 9:36 am
With an avuncular pat on the shoulder Marston directed the babbling Torrance away as he and Strom continued on towards the admin building. That was a close one! While Torrance didn't hear much more than just a sentence worth of conversation, two words stuck out: Whatever was a mass awakening? And why would it need quarantining?
OOC:
Lots of info actually :) You rolled 3 successes on the eavesdropping.
1 success - you know that Marston is involved in covering something up
2 successes - you know Strom is disagreeing with Marston's approach
3 successes - you learn the term 'awakening' for the first time
4 successes - ?

Anyway, Torrance gets away without suspicion, from the latest roll result!
Mar 7, 2026 1:56 am
Torrance will make note of the others who noticed Emily and send them a private message, starting a side chat. Torrance: Something's up. Talk in person?
He wasn't usually one to reach out, and he wasn't sure what was connected, if anything, but now he was curious.
OOC:
Should I move this message to the group forum?

In the meanwhile I think Torrance would be looking online for "mass awakening" and "awakening event" and "awakening quarantine" etc info.

I think that is the right roll. I also would accept there is no info to find.

There was so much more to learn, but Torrance's quick search turned up nothing. Still, he could not help but infer that whatever Marston and Strom spoke about was also related to how he experienced today's incident. For Torrance had also gained a certain awareness of the strangeness. Did that mean that he was one of those described as 'awakened'? He suddenly realised he was now inextricably involved, even though he didn't yet understand the implications of what it all meant. Does this mean the others felt the same way too?
OOC:
No successes unfortunately, at least not from an internet search.
Mar 11, 2026 1:37 am
OOC:
Ok, now that I am sharing what I learned it DOES seem like a lot.
Mar 11, 2026 3:45 pm
OOC:
I figured you were playing Torrance so far as the silent observer type who stands aloof but gets the insight, so I'm happy to send the right kinds of information your way. Here's another hint: eg, he's the only one so far with the idea that something from the past is affecting the present.
Mar 11, 2026 3:51 pm
OOC:
Yeah he's definately detatched, but very information motivated. Not unwilling to take action, but not going to take action just to do it.
(All things I am learning as I play him.)

"Have a seat." Despite the serious formality of the title of Doctor, Veritas was generally regarded as a motherly figure amongst the staff, more youthful in appearance than one might guess her true age to be, though her chopped bob and bangs, slightly streaked in grey, gave her some kindly gravitas to match.

The counselling room was furnished with soft armchairs and a table for the counsellor, carpeted but enclosed with no natural light. A small shelf sat to one side with a tray of glasses and a water flask.

Today though the shelf was partially blocked by a third person in the room."Ms Nixon will join us today as well, as part of the school's efforts to improve our care programme." The woman looked as proper as she did yesterday, again in nearly the same shade of grey suit. In her hand was a tablet and stylus.

"How are you doing at the moment Torrance? I am concerned about what you may have experienced at yesterday's blackout. Can you tell me a bit about what's going on with you right now? I'm ready to listen if you're willing to share." So that’s what the school was calling it, a blackout.

Her tone was gentle, but nonetheless probing..
OOC:
As mentioned, this is your individual scene within the main thread, where you have to see the counsellor. The overall conversation in the waiting room was and is still ongoing, and when you leave this session the other six are still outside talking. (I’m running this simultaneously across all threads so we don’t hold up the main thread too much.)
Mar 15, 2026 6:21 am
Oh. Torrance is used this runaround. He knows a cage dressed up to look like care when he sees, and that is what this looks like.
"I wasn't injured during the blackout, is that what you're asking? Was someone injured?"
Mar 19, 2026 1:13 am
"Stress can make events seem more threatening than they are. Did you feel at risk or in danger yesterday? Did you witness anyone getting hurt and did you let the teachers know about it?"

Veritas' tone continued to be warm and assuring, but she stuck to asking Torrance the questions, rather than answering his. All savvy teens were alike, able to give an account to an adult to get out of trouble. The question was whether Torrance's evasion was too obvious such that Veritas saw through him immediately.

Torrance had the feeling though that the version of the story he chose to tell was somehow important to himself personally. That it would shape how he dealt with his newly experienced reality in some way.
OOC:
Time for a Manipulation+Subterfuge roll, at difficulty 7, and you'll need 3 successes, representing the wisdom of the adults in the room. Sanctity gives you a 2 die bonus. This is if Torrance chooses to offer an account, since he hasn't told his version.
On the other hand, if you're thinking to continue to evade, let me know and I'll ask for a resisted roll instead, ie Torrance vs Veritas to see who has more successes.
Mar 20, 2026 7:20 pm
Torrance will pause just a monent, looking around the room, trying to detect the mind of another who can tap into the forces that he now can. (Detect another mage)

Sorry that our delay meant you moved on a bit before I could explain how subtle casting works. Quick rules explanation: Casting magic can be coincidental or vulgar. Coincidental means the way in which it is cast appears as normal actions to any bystander or observer (pulling a rabbit out of a hat can be explained). Vulgar means it is unmistakably magical (a fireball from a lighter is hard to explain). Secondly, casting magic requires a focus, which differs from mage to mage. One might use gestures, another might use a prop like a wand or an instrument or a handphone, or another might speak words or chant or sing, etc. Higher level mages can circumvent this. In Mage, magic doesn't just happen at the speed of thought (otherwise for game-purposes, no one would ever know when magic is about to happen until it actually happens and the world of Mage would be even more dangerous if reality changed but no one could ever detect it).

So back to this situation. Let's say Torrance wants to use magic to figure out whether Veritas and/or Nixon are magic-wielders. You will need to describe what he's doing to cast this magic, eg is he doing a jedi handwave in front of them? If so, since they are seeing him do this strange gesture, this would be considered vulgar, ie they know he's doing something strange. Coincidental vs vulgar magic have different difficulty ratings.

Next, rules regarding magic die rolls. Your Arete level determines how many dots you allocate to any Sphere, and also determines how many magic dice you roll. Everyone starts with Arete 1 at chargen, and I advised everyone to spend 4 of their freebie points to raise Arete to 2. (So that you can roll two dice rather than one, and I'm planning for further leveling up in future to Arete 3.)

Whenever you cast a spell, with Arete 2, you can roll up to 2 dice. You don't add Arete+Mind for example to roll 4 dice. The Sphere ratings determine what kinds of effects can be accomplished, and they are combined in various ways to achieve them, eg Mind 2 Forces 2 allows a mage to think something and manifest that to blow something up. Mind 2 Time 2 could help a mage 'think faster'. Feel free to ask which combinations produce what effects. You still only roll 2 dice though if your Arete is 2. (And for growth, you can't get to Mind 3 or Time 3 etc until your Arete becomes 3).

Hope the lengthy explanation helps. So back to the two posts above, I'll definitely post a resolution to the Manipulation + Subterfuge roll I asked for, but I'll also let you reconsider how you might want to use magic in this situation first.
Mar 30, 2026 1:11 pm
OOC:
Yeah he is casting coincidental magic.
Mar 30, 2026 1:55 pm
OOC:
I get that. I am asking how Torrance can cast coincidental magic in front of witnesses. What is he doing, while using his focus, to seem as if he is doing something that can be perceived by witnesses as completely normal and ordinary, but that he is actually performing magic? The situation is that he is being invited to sit down and speak with a counsellor. If for example he's waving his jedi fingers at them, they would know that he's trying to do something funny, and that wouldn't be coincidental magic at all.

If you have a chance, look at the magic chapter of the rulebook, chapter 10. I can help explain some of the rules there.
Mar 30, 2026 6:18 pm
OOC:
Do you want a roll for him to disguise it? There are plenty of ways to disguise a hand motion in a conversation.
Apr 1, 2026 2:45 pm
Torrance reached out instinctively with his newfound senses; they had recently afforded him greater insight into the world in a way he did not formerly understand, and it was logical to get a feel of Veritas and Nixon. To produce the awareness, he found that he needed to act in a manner to make it work, and, not knowing any better, again he did so unbidden with a wave of his hand.

His mind connected with the fact that Veritas and Nixon also had minds of their own. He expected to be able to sense their thoughts, but found that he 'read' ... nothing. He wasn't sure whether that was because he wasn't doing correctly what he did previously, or whether he did, but something was preventing him from succeeding. This ability was all new to him. (Even earlier, in the archive room, he didn't know either the newfound limits of his ability).

He looked from Veritas to Nixon, and saw that Nixon was now directly staring at him with piercing eyes. The cold, expressionless guidance counsellor said nothing, but Torrance could not help but feel that Nixon saw into him.
OOC:
Benefit of doubt, I'll use your most beneficial roll the 10 and 5 from the first post, to determine the success of your Mind 2 use, which is to sense thoughts. You rolled potentially 1 success, so at best you get to read one target. You can't hide this attempt (that's why I asked earlier whether you wanted to use magic this way) since you're using it to 'attack' others.
In game terms, something is preventing you from reading that one target. Also, I need you to make a Willpower roll. You have 5 Willpower, so roll 5 dice.

The book is not the most well laid-out thing. I thought I had a better grasp of casting but I guess not.
Apr 4, 2026 6:20 am
Something (or someone) saved him from making a bungle of his magic use. He had no proper training, no real means of how to actually create the effect he wanted; Torrance was simply reaching out again to make sense of whatever he could sense, this time he tried to figure out Veritas and Nixon, with a little gesture to guide his thoughts along which on hindsight might have been a dead giveaway.

He came up empty, except for the realisation that his powers had limits, and he needed to know how to use them better if he wanted to be more successful in using them. It could be the room itself that was damping, or Veritas' questions, or Nixon's stare, or any of these possibilities.

Nixon suddenly stood up, her eyes not leaving Torrance's, and cleared her throat. Veritas took this as the cue that their session had come to an end. "I am glad to hear you were not adversely affected by yesterday. You may return to class." The session had come to an end.
OOC:
As mentioned earlier, Manipulation + Subterfuge worked, so Torrance gets away with whatever half-truths he tells. The magic use was met with something, and that Torrance would have been countered by something else, except that counter failed. I unhid one of my hidden rolls to show you what I rolled (the fail!). So Torrance 'survives', but this scene is done.
And absolutely, the rulebook is all over the place, pretty hard to find the info, and some bits contradict each other too! I think I shall have to copy paste some relevant bits in the common thread when those rules pop up, might help everyone.
Apr 5, 2026 7:31 pm
OOC:
As a player I knew that casting could be a bad idea, but I didnt think Torrance would consider that. Just a new "secret" wat to get info.
Not yet having ran into it being discovered.

OOC:
Totally! I do like that Torrance will 'make mistakes' as he goes along. And through that discover who to trust and who to be wary of. As player, I guess you could infer he just brushed again magic greater than his own, even though he doesn't understand it. I deliberately gave you very little description on what Torrance understood or not. He'll have to learn it bit by bit.

OOC:
Here are all the most recent Torrance-related posts so far, if you're being overwhelmed by the noise. Although the 'noise' does contain many other clues. :)
The layout of the Redevelopment Wing ('Burned Wing') was described in the first two pages of the main thread, when the group was sitting in the waiting room, and Torrance goes to the toilet. As far as Torrance knows, there is the reception, offices, counselling rooms, archive room, maintenance, toilet, and a staircase to the basement.
A very brief description of the Burned Wing is in Worldbuilding, with the campus map. A small history in earlier posts mentions it suffering a fire years ago and the story behind it, and then it was subsequently rebuilt, and still being upgraded today at various intervals.
PhoenixScientist says:
Torrance will make sure he is seen getting some work done, tearing down things, and then slip out before things really get locked up.
As he moves out he will get to the office and if noone is inside and looking he will duct tape the latch bolt back, stopping the future door locking from keeping him out.
He will then slip to whatever exterior door automatically locks and repeat the process and get back to the tear down.
Quote:
Upstairs in the multi-purpose hall, Torrance contributed what he could with his fellow club members, but what he really wanted to do was slip away from the Gymnasium Block to return to the Burned Wing in order to tinker with the building's doors. No one was really policing or forcing the seniors to help with the clean up; it was simply them fulfilling their responsibilities to school. So Torrance could certainly do the irresponsible thing and skip out altogether. However, if he wanted to give the impression that he was responsibly helping out, (and also to provide an alibi for his whereabouts, assuming his mind worked this way), he could try to give the impression that he was present in the hall, while seizing an opportunity to go sabotage the Burned Wing doors, and then come back to pretend nothing had happened.
OOC:
Some story decisions. Does Torrance even want to be the hall, or does he shirk his responsibility immediately? Or, benefit of doubt, I described a possible Torrance motivation for wanting to slip away and come back, if that's your plan. If you don't want anyone to notice Torrance is missing from duty, I'll use that Stealth roll for that. If you want to pretend to shuttle back and forth, a Time + Life effect, will help Torrance move faster from location to location. Finally if you want to engineer the Burned Wing for a subsequent break-in, I'll move the action there in a different post and ask for your actions there, such as jamming the locks etc.
PhoenixScientist says:
Torrance for sure does help some, and his leaving to secure the locks is as short as possible to do just that and come back to help
Quote:
Torrance had also walked out of the hall with the other two, carrying an armful of whatever it was that he was asked to bring back to the Maths clubroom. It provided him the pretext of heading back to the counselling centre once he dispensed with the box of leftover materials. He was singularly focussed on what the group said they were planning to do next, which was to break into the Burned Wing, rather than what they could achieve now in the hall.

He reached the entrance of the building, watching the time to decide when was the best moment to do what he wanted to do, which was to sabotage the door locks so that they could gain access later. There was a need to think ahead: presumably he needed to know when all the people present would have left for the day before he could carry out his plan. Minimally there was the admin receptionist, Young. There was Veritas, whose actual office as a Chemistry teacher was in the STEM building. And even though he met only Nixon, he had to assume Necht was working in the building as well. What he also didn't know was exactly what time the caretaker would lock up the premises, and how the security system worked, although it wouldn't be wrong to assume that there would be some sort of campus security controls for its buildings.
OOC:

Let me know how Torrance intends to find out when the building will be locked? Or does he intend to carry out his plan now, while people are still inside? Or some other way, go ahead and elaborate!
Quote:
Torrance had nipped out so that he could make getting back into the Burned Wing more convenient for the rest of them later. His calculative mind worked out the various permutations so that he could decide what was most optimal based on the facts:
- He knew that the Counselling Centre would close at 5pm. That was when Ms Young would leave.
- He didn't know when Veritas, or Necht or Nixon would stay until. Staff sometimes left earlier, sometimes later.
- The caretaker crew typically locked up most of the school premises at 6pm, but that depended on who was staying back for what activities, so sometimes they would lock certain buildings later.
- The school, like most schools, would have a security system where some locations, such as offices, would be alarm wired.
Torrance had to decide what time he wanted to rig the doors. Too early, and the tampering might get discovered. Too late, and the doors would be locked already. Of course, there were other ways to tamper with doors, although his friends were only just beginning to learn how to do so.
OOC:
Hope this is clearer, if Torrance is planning to sabotage the doors beforehand.
Quote:
Torrance weighed his options further. The school day was winding down. He would have to summon the others soon to get ready to break into the Burned Wing together. The question was whether he wanted to prep the breaking in first so that it'd be easier for all of them to get in, or wait for the others, for they might also have their own ways to do so. What he was weighing was what they hoped to find inside, whether that was worth the risk and effort of breaking in. He considered what Minsoo said about something in the basement, and what Myra mentioned about the strange layout. He himself managed to get some information; the question was what other information did they want to uncover.

Regarding information on Alex Vance, Torrance had read the current counselling file which contained his background and well-being records. In fact, Torrance had the opportunity to read all the files of his classmates that he cared to read about in the five minutes he spent in the archive room earlier. Torrance knew about Alex's visits and referrals. What Torrance did not see were the actual counselling notes: they would have been private and confidential, either under greater lock and key, or in the counsellor's computer files. There were tons of other files in the archive room; breaking in could mean that he could spend hours searching through them to find some clue, for he could not shake the intuitive feeling that somehow he would be able to find something about Emily Walsh, even though it was impossible as she was a brand new student. Or perhaps there were other secrets to uncover, whether in the files, or in the premises itself, that might make a break-in tempting.
OOC:
Best place for information on students would be the main admin office, which stores the registrar of all students, their complete personal and family data, basically everything on everyone. Respective subject offices, eg arts faculty, science faculty, stores information on student regarding their work, and also their grades. The counselling office, ie the Burned Wing, stores counselling records. Because the Burned Wing is an old rebuilt place, it might also store more historical information not found in the main admin office.
As for how easy it is to break-in, I'm treating this part of the scenario like a classic rpg heist! :) You'll have to enter locked doors, fool the guards, search rooms, etc to find what you want. And there'll be a map to explore. Eg getting through the main door is super easy if it's not closing time yet, but after the school is locked up, you'll have to bypass the lock. Or, as you suggested earlier, you might want to sabotage the doors to be unable to lock properly, and hope no one finds out you did so. Many options!
May 8, 2026 7:23 am
OOC:
To answer your last question, nothing is stopping Torrance from breaking in. I've been providing as many details as I can so you can visualise and describe the manner in which to break in should Torrance choose to. Let me know what other information you need, and I'll tell you whether you need a roll for it or whether it's common knowledge.
Perhaps you need to visualise this part of the game, in rpg terms, like 'breaking into a castle as a dungeoncrawl', or 'breaking into a corporate office to steal secrets', if that helps (how to open the drawbridge, how to defeat the orcs, how to dismantle the traps, how to find the treasure, etc, or how to evade the security guards, how to disable the security cameras, how to programme the elevator to the top floor, how to crack the safe, how to escape with a safe exit, etc).
So if you want to start, for example, by sabotaging the doors, which is something you posted and rolled for, we can proceed with that. Or if you've decided on some other starting course of action.
I am still hinting that this is not a solo game. It is unlikely that Torrance has all the necessary skills to do this on his own, if this is what you're asking. In one of the earlier posts, a number of the others did say that they want to explore the Burned Wing.
Also, remember timeline-wise I'm not necessarily hinting that the break-in must happen today. It could be that there's a future occasion that warrants the break-in. But this is what I mean by the sandbox options of this game, there's no railroad that forces everyone to follow a linear plot.
Hope this helps!

Adding another suggestion, hopefully helpful. Don't overthink this. We can just proceed with idea you already had and posted and rolled for, which is Torrance will now sabotage the main door. And then let's see where this takes us. I'm good with that, shall we?
