You find the Rift near dark. You know you need to find a place to shelter till daylight. The Rift looks deep and dark. Your new items illuminate the space around you, but you know you will need a rope or find a way to climb down to the bottom of the Rift. Nearby is an empty cave that looks safe to camp. Again, it is your luck that a large shelf and air pocket create a 25 foot high by 60 feet circular dome that is nearly dry and breathable, though the air is stale...

kind of confused. Why climb not swim? What am i missing
Notes: don't have a rope. Have darkvision 120 feet.
Dec 12, 2025 2:40 pm
OOC:
I have rope and grappling hook if needed. Only 50' rope though.
Dec 13, 2025 12:58 am
Biscuit: "Shall we investigate the cave and camp for the night?"
Dec 13, 2025 2:43 am
OOC:
You can easily access the shelf above without a need for ropes or a skill check.

my question was about

But I am good either way. Just curios to underst what am i missing.
Mole dies not listen he gets into the shelf and once he is the pocket gets his pipe snd ties to light it up for no success as it is all wet. damn it
Mole takes organizes his stuff to dry through the night hoping to smoke at least in the morning.
Dec 15, 2025 10:55 pm
You camp, more or less for the night. It is uneventful and you feel rested and ready for the day.
Dec 16, 2025 12:11 am
Biscuits eats a biscuit and asks, "Who is ready for a climb?"
Dec 16, 2025 4:46 am
Mole smokes his pipe and smiles. The sooner better.
Dec 18, 2025 2:46 pm
After eating Varos is ready to proceed, he picks up his new staff"Are we ready?"
Dec 19, 2025 2:20 am
you move towards the precipice and you can see that there are many handholds to climb down. also, your weight belt will allow you to drift slowly towards the bottom, some 30 feet down.
Dec 19, 2025 7:50 pm
Handholds undwewater? Anyone understed why? Mole is surprised, but not for long. Eager to test his new toy (bow) he drifts down, holding his bow.
Dec 19, 2025 8:57 pm
Biscuit: "Mole, if you prefer, you could hold my hand instead." He then drifts downward.
Dec 20, 2025 1:31 am
Varos will drift down with the others
Dec 20, 2025 2:52 am
You reach the bottom and on one side you see darkness, sand, and the beginnings of a stone path. The other direction you see darkness and more sand. Your weapon emanates a soft blue light that illuminates a 15' radius around it.

OOC:
is it a magical darkness that a darkvision can not see through? I have a darkvision 120 foot
Dec 20, 2025 9:26 pm
OOC:
Not magical. Good call
Dec 21, 2025 1:19 am
Biscuit: "Shall we take the stony path?"
Dec 21, 2025 8:38 am
OOC:
@DirtyDwarf77 - can you remind me - your PC is Halfling, isn't he? No darkvision there
@mathias0077 - Varos i believe is either elf or half-elf, isn't he? Darkvision 60?

I would like to postpone my PC actions until I have a confirmation.

I would also like to know if stone path follows straight these 120 feet I can see and if there are any other objects to right and left of the stone path.
Dec 21, 2025 12:07 pm
OOC:
The stones are about 30ft by 30ft square though they have been somewhat eroded you see they are made of granite and cut with precision. The path is two columns of stones like a two column grid, with the stones spaced about an inch from each other. This path goes off into the distance beyond your vision.

The sea floor is sandy and in some places it is so soft, you can sink down into it, depth varies from up to your thighs to even deeper. There are small bottom feeders here that scurry off at your approach. Around you it is very uniform and seems like a very large plain of sand with only the occasional seaweed.

Opposite the stone path, at the edge of your dark vision are two black pillars spaced apart much like road markers though you estimate them to be about 15ft high each. There is a lack of detail at this distance in the slightly murky water.
Dec 21, 2025 12:41 pm
Mole puts his bow into the backpack. He don't want the light to give away his location.
I see a pair of pillars the other side, I will swim there to check for any guards who would try to ambush us from behind.
Taking off his weight belt and leaving it with Biscuit Mole swims to the pillars to check for any creatures. He is also interested to to see if any signs, drawings or writings are on the pillars.
OOC:
If none he will return to others and suggest to proceed following:

"When we will be walking the stone path, I would prefer to be swimming some 50 feet to sides and in front. Whatever our enemy is - it knows we are coming. I expect ambush. Your shining weapons will create attraction/distraction and hopefully allow me to spot enemy before they attack. What do you think?"
Dec 21, 2025 2:36 pm
OOC:
Yes , Varos is an elf and has darkvision 60'
Dec 21, 2025 8:34 pm
OOC: Yes, halfling. No dark vision. Mole’s idea sounds good.

Are we read to continue? Is everyone OK with following the stone path?

i would prefer to see my above stated actions to be narrated, but will not mind if fhey are ignored if they wouldn't bring any interesting story angle.
Jan 6, 2026 12:42 pm
OCC: Yes, that is fine.
Jan 6, 2026 4:41 pm
OOC:
Yep, yep
Jan 7, 2026 2:10 am
Mole swims over towards the pillars. He sees some shadowy figures in the distance - fish, sharks, rays? Hard to tell. The pillars seem ancient. There is cuneiform writing etched into the surface of the pillars. They are made of a blackish green granite-like stone.
OOC:
A WIS check will deter.ine if you recognize the shadowy figures. Unless you have some language or Arceology background, you will not be able to decipher the cuneiform.
Jan 7, 2026 8:24 am
OOC:

I only have Extra Languages: Giantish, Dwarwen
Could you remind me how do I to a WIS check? I searched internet and they only found "There aren’t any ability or skill checks as far as I know in S&W"
so do I roll 1d100 and consult Thief's "Delicate Tasks" table? DO I roll 1d20 as in modern systems? Perhaps 1d6?
My PC wisdom is 9 if that's of a matter here
Mole swims back to party Some creatures probably guarding entrance. Will need to watch our backs. Dwarf informs party.
I hope we could finish the job sooner though, let's go Mole swims forward along the stone path
Jan 7, 2026 9:50 pm
OOC:
There are no skills listed, but I don't feel that a surprise roll will be relevant. I HOUSE RULE that attribute checks are 1d20 vs. Attribute. Roll lower that or equal to the attribute for a success.
Jan 8, 2026 4:48 am
OOC:
wis check

Rolls

Wis 9 - (1d20)

(6) = 6

Jan 9, 2026 1:35 am
OOC:
Bam! Successful WIS check. You recognize the shadowy figures as 3 rays, most likely more of those intelligent ones.
Jan 9, 2026 3:07 pm
OOC:
Al little surprise attack? Are they in bow range?
Jan 10, 2026 12:21 am
OOC:
Yes they are 70 yards away.
Jan 10, 2026 8:52 am
OOC:
As far as I understand I would need to get in 120 feet range to see the enemy and then shoot with –2 range penalty, but +4 from thief backstab. With two attacks per round have a good chance I guess. If @mathias0077 and @DirtyDwarf77 are ok with my PC taking all the spotlight can go for that
Or - if you don't mind I would like to try the gift Mole takes his bow and his ayes shine.
Jan 10, 2026 4:16 pm
OOC:
outdoor ranges are in yards.
Jan 10, 2026 10:57 pm
OCC: Go for it!
Jan 10, 2026 11:50 pm
OOC:
Yep, Go for it. I would like to move closer.
Jan 11, 2026 5:44 am
OOC:
Anything closer than 30 yards will require some stealth. How close will you get?
Jan 11, 2026 9:28 am
Mole moves just close enough to see them.
OOC:
120 feet, that's 40 yards, right?
Jan 11, 2026 9:14 pm
GreyWord says:

OOC:
Yessir! Divide feet by three
Jan 13, 2026 5:51 pm
Mole moves until he is 40 yard away and shoots some arrows
OOC:
Remind me, with Dex 16 I roll initiative 1d6+1, right? ANd could you please remind me of surprise effect to combat order. If longbow rate of fire is 2 do roll it twice with surprise bonus?
Jan 14, 2026 1:36 am
OOC:
Surprise
If surprise is a possibility, roll 1d6 for either or both groups, as appropriate. (Roll only once for each side, not for each individual character or monster.) If the result is a 1 or a 2, the group is surprised. If one side is surprised, the other side automatically gets to take actions before the first initiative roll.
A party that includes a Monk or Ranger, however, is surprised only on a roll of 1.
It is possible for both groups to be surprised, effectively canceling out the effect on both sides.
And here is something really nasty: If a group is surprised, each person (or creature) in it has a 1-in-4 chance to drop one or more handheld items!
OOC:
Initiative
Each side rolls a d6 and the side with the highest result is the winner. One roll is made for each side, not for each individual. If this is the first round and one group was surprised, the other side gets to go first automatically, without having to roll a die.
At the beginning of a combat round, each side rolls a d6 for "initiative" — the opportunity to act first. The side with the highest roll wins, and that group acts first.
OOC:
Movement and Missiles
It is up to the Referee whether missile fire includes both shots from a weapon with a rate-of-fire higher than one; a longbow, for example, shoots twice in one round.
In many games, only the first shot is allowed in this phase, with the second shot being fired after melee and spells are resolved.

In this game you may fire your full Rate of Fire on your turn.
Jan 14, 2026 5:59 am
OOC:
so i am waiting to see DM roll for enemy surprise. That will channge a whole lot.

Rolls

Party initiative + dex - (1d6+1)

(5) + 1 = 6

Jan 14, 2026 11:14 am
OOC:
Well, I wasn't going to roll for surprise as you can see them but they haven't spotted you. You have the advantage of surprise in this case and get an automatic surprise round.
Jan 14, 2026 1:08 pm
OOC:
automatic surprise round sounds fantastic, thanks
Mole shoot and suggest others to join him in the fight,
OOC:
[ +- ] from weapon description
I have +3 to hit normally and now add +2 from weapon and +4 from surprise.
And damage is doubled this round if it matters. I guess I got it all right

Rolls

Longbow shoot 1 - (1d20+3+2+4, 1d6+4)

1d20+3+2+4 : (17) + 9 = 26

1d6+4 : (1) + 4 = 5

Longbow shoot 2 - (1d20+3+2+4, 1d6+4)

1d20+3+2+4 : (7) + 9 = 16

1d6+4 : (4) + 4 = 8

Jan 14, 2026 5:48 pm
Varos will also take a couple of shots with his short bow.
OOC:
We get +4 for surprise?

Rolls

to hit, damage - (1d20+1+4, 1d6+1)

1d20+1+4 : (20) + 5 = 25

1d6+1 : (6) + 1 = 7

to hit, damage - (1d20+1+4, 1d6+1)

1d20+1+4 : (2) + 5 = 7

1d6+1 : (5) + 1 = 6

Jan 15, 2026 1:14 am
Rolls

Rolls

To hit: Short bow - (1d20+2)

(17) + 2 = 19

To hit: short bow - (1d20+2)

(8) + 2 = 10

Damage - (1d6+1)

(4) + 1 = 5

Damage - (1d6+1)

(1) + 1 = 2

The Arc of Deep Blue does not fail Mole. Blue shafts streak through the briny water first crippling one, then the other Ixitzachitl. These are followed closely by a shaft from Varos that rips through the first ray and another from Buisquit that shreds through the second ray. Both are mortally pierced and drift to the ocean floor - lifeless...

Jan 15, 2026 11:43 pm
"Good show, yes onward."Varos will follow Mole.

OOC:
Does Mole put on his weighted belt or will he continue to swim?
Jan 16, 2026 4:49 am
OOC:
for simplicity lets say he walks i.e.
Mole swims to the side and ahead but realize others do not see him. Then he swims back and puts his belt on. Start walking the stone path.
Jan 16, 2026 4:36 pm
Biscuit: "Let’s go!"
