I remember one of my first campaigns ever, one of the players died in the first room in the first dungeon and he returned with the same exact character with Jr. behind his name.

I'm sorry, but this is Worst Pitches, not Perfect Tropes. ;)

I have a RL friend who played a character in our original AD&D campaign back when we were in our teens and has been attempting to play that same character in every campaign since (over 20 years now). And I don't mean similar. I mean the same exact character, backstory and all, regardless of genre.
I've had one like this as well. But he also wanted to retain the story, abilities and items he had acquired in previous games.

What do you mean my immortal elf lost all his equipment and levels in the 500 years he spent doing nothing!!?!?!

Yes, this exactly, though he is at least willing to de-power the things he has based on the campaign style. So his fancy sword isn't ridiculously overpowered. It's the "same sword", but with no mechanical benefits.

Honestly? It's because it takes me out of the game. If I wanted Alias of the Azure Bonds to be a character in my game, I would either NPC her (which I have done) or invite you to play her. It's fine to play a character like Gandalf, and if you simply must call your character Gandalf, I can learn to live with that, but if you recreate Gandalf and claim that you were the creator of the character, that irks me (unless, of course, your name is John Ronald Reuel Tolkien).
