Basically, the pitch is: Metal Gear Solid meets Resident Evil (4, 5 and 6, I mean): in a near future where most of the world's governments collapsed, corporations rule the Earth, raging endless wars across the globe with their PMCs for control and domination.

PCs will be comrades in a newly found PMC, fighting for fortune, glory or any other ideals they may hold.

I plan this to be an adaption of the material I prepped for a live one-shot some time ago (more-than-half of which didn't got used). The idea being 3 large missions across the world, under a single mysterious contractor, with a sandboxy approach, meaning a large area with multiple points of interest, side-missions, and local factions that are usually fighting against each other.

We would be using Cities Without Number, but with some modifications: cybernetics being more scarce (expensive), and including the psychic powers from Starts Without Number and, maybe, the stuff in Ashes without Number (like the stress mechanic and mutant powers).

Would like to know if there are any people interested around here.

Never played CWN but I'm interested!

Don't have a single clue about the way these systems work, but I love the premise.

I've been into the Without Number line recently, though I haven't read the CWN player facing rules just yet. Interested on the Resident Evil angle here - sounds neat! Are you planning on incorporating some RE style body / zombie horror into this?

From the Metal Gear angle, are you looking for character concepts that a little over the top? Or are you looking for more grounded PCs?

Count me interested!

edit I'm also a newbie here on GamersPlane, though not to pbp games in general! if that makes any difference to you.

Neat! So, I certainly wouldn't go overboard on describing grotesque views down to the detail, as it isn't something that I would like doing, but for servicing the narrative and atmosphere, there certainly would be some, at least. Just to be clear, it won't be a zombie game, more like: the PCs go infiltrate an enemy zone and end up finding some terrifying threat in there (avoiding spoilers). Thus: the Tactical Mercenary stuff with some Survivor Horror on top.

As for the PCs, a little over the top would be welcomed! I just didn't understand the "From the Metal Gear angle": RE characters are just as (or even more) over the top!

Oh, and no problem with you being a newbie, naturally.

Gotcha, sounds good to me!

I've got a couple of character ideas percolating, nothing set in stone, would you mind if I shared?

Wouldn't mind at all!

I've been playing my way through the Without Number series, but I haven't had a chance to try CWN yet. I'd love a chance to try!

Some character ideas, from least wacky to most.

"Mallard"
-- distinctive orange billed trucker cap
-- driver and drone operator
-- always kinda pissed off at unreliable machines
-- scruffy and weedy

"Caveman"
-- allergic (or afraid? or ideologically opposed to?) cyberware.
-- maybe a reconstructed neanderthal that is incompatible with cyber
-- either a weedy revolution-poster who got busted or just a big beefy guy

"Ozma"
-- sour and dour secret agent with some decayed rump-state authority
-- go stuffed into a pop-propaganda-idol body, (was undercover as the pop idol)
-- got sniffed out and is stuck in this stupid cheery chipper holo-body

Cool; I think that Ozma and Mallard would be promising.

But just so you know, we aren't dealing with a full fledged cyberpunk world. Cyberware (aka bionics), exist, but are very rare/expensive. implants to substitute lost limbs or organs are available, even with some augments, for the wealthier, but fully cyborg augmented soldiers would be top-secret projects from the most powerful companies.

In game system, that would be like a x2 on the cost of cyberware.

Ah, yeah, makes sense that a character that is incompatible with cyberware wouldn't really fit in a setting where cyberwear isn't so common.

My interest is piqued by this idea, but I have no experience with CWN and vague familiarity with SWN, as an example of a newcomer to the Without Number line of systems/products, so I don't know how much that weighs on whether it's plausible to be a part of the game or not.

If you don't mind a newbie to the system, but otherwise an experienced RPer that is into the setting, then I'd love to try playing.

I reasonably am completely fine with newbies to the system, as it's not that well known. Besides, it doesn't stray too much from your OSR game (though very polished, in my opinion), there are free versions of the rules, I have my copies at hand and you can roll most of your character in random tables too.

With the amount of interest I gathered in here, I'll be starting to work on it.

I'm posting my interest in case you need another player.
Sep 26, 2025 4:15 pm
Definitely interested! A shame I've seen this so late.
Sep 26, 2025 4:24 pm
Not late at all! This was just an interest check. I posted the recruitment thread. Check that out.

So Foxhounds vs. Skulls?

I can do that.

If you're interested, feel free to apply in the recruitment thread, we just had a slot freed up.
