Hello everyone,

I've been looking for the best place to play by post for a while now. And I'm pretty sure this is it. You have something really impressive here.

(who runs this place? No ads? No fees? Is it out of the goodness of your hearts? How long has this been here? It looks like a LONG time.)

I have just learnt about the OSR phenomena, but that's not me. I'm not old school, just old. I've played D&D since the 70's and this year I have decided to quit 5e, ignore Hasbro/WotC and go back to where I've always been happy, OG 1st/2nd edition AD&D.

I have every book I've ever gotten, but I don't have them all. So, I've spent the summer nosing around in used book stores, comic shops, game stores, flea markets etc. and I've been shocked at how little I've found. I don't know why. I know, I know, just shop on-line. But I'm old, I don't wanna. Anyone have any tips, I'm all ears. If anyone wants to trade old TSR books for new WotC books, let me know.

I was pleasantly surprised how much interest my first game got! I hope enough people play 2e games that I can play in some too.

I'll start small, and run bigger and bigger games as I figure the mechanics out here, re-familliarize (if that's a word) myself with the old system, and find more books. One thing I've been looking for is a place to take notes. I tried sending myself a message, but that doesn't work. Some kind of DM note pad attached to the game forum would be really helpful. Is there something I haven't found?

Thank you all. Everyone has been helpful and friendly.

Welcome THAC0! Glad to see some fellow old people here (although we are many, actually). There's a consistent interest in OD&D, BECMI, or AD&D games, so you should see games you're interested in pop up.

Personally, I have never been too interested in using the PbP platform for taking notes. I just use whatever external note taking system I like, same as I would for 'at the table' play. Sometimes this can be an issue when those notes are not available but the PbP site is and we want to play, but that does not come up often enough for me to care.

Many use a character sheet for notes. If the sheet is attached to the game it will appear at the bottom of the page and can easily be referenced and updated. Some GMs have public and private sheets, so the players can see some notes and not others, some use the 'Private Notes' feature to hide certain parts within a public sheet.

Another approach is to use a forum thread for notes. Each player could have their own thread. Subforums can be made readable only by some (or only the GM) for private notes.

There are options within GP, but note taking is a field that has a lot of personal preference, so the site can not really provide such a mechanism.

Welcome to the community, THAC0, glad you're liking what you're seeing! At some point we'll have virtual beer and debate the finer points of descending vs. ascending AC. =]

Welcome!

(Certainly an abundance of goodness of the heart here that I've witnessed from so many people committed to running games here, and continued interest from people wanting to play!)
