Jump Space, heading to Fornice

Aug 10, 2025 2:59 am
Hopefully...

The countdown to jump proceeds normally. 10...9...8...7....

The Nav Program has been updated for the last time. Tharrok and Leilani have the ship right on course, precise down to the split second!

Miss Fortune hits its mark! JUMP.....! Simultaneously an alarm sounds in Engineering.... Buzzz...buzzz...buzzz....

Followed by a cascade of blinking orange and red lights. CRAP!

Bronz and Tamm are right on it. The alarms and diagnostic programs point them to the Power Plant...Again!

On the BRIDGE the ominous blinking lights are quickly extinguished. Indicators show the jump-bubble properly formed. The question hangs there.... "Did We Mis-Jump?" You are unlikely to know for several hours, as the most common first indication is jump-sickness. For now everything looks normal.

Down in the engineering section....

The problem becomes obvious within just a few minutes. It's a cracked cryonic trispacial controller. Computer analysis shows a small energy bleed just as jump initiated. Might have thrown the jump coordinates off....just a little. Probably not a big problem.

But the component isn't something you carry in the spares locker. It will have to be replaced at a fully eguipped star-port. Like at Fornice.

[LC Rains stands at the bridge’s forward console, eyes fixed on the swirling kaleidoscope of jump space through the forward viewer. He adjusts his jacket, though it doesn’t need it, and lets out a slow exhale.]

"Well… the good news is we haven’t dissolved into a fine mist, the inertial compensators haven’t spontaneously become abstract artists, and the nav beacons still think we’re on schedule.."

[He leans back in the acceleration couch-chair, speaking ]
"Now, until proven otherwise, we’ll operate on the quaint assumption that we’re still pointed at Fornice. If anything goes wrong in jump space, we won’t know until we arrive—or don’t. At which point, our itinerary becomes… improv theatre."

[He swivels to the comms panel and keys in a quick log entry.]
"Bridge log: Jump entry normal, bubble integrity nominal, trajectory lock verified. No anomalous readings. Confidence level… cautiously smug..until I talk to Tamm and Bronz for their report.."

[Looking around the bridge]
"Alright, keep your eyes on your boards. And if anyone starts feeling that unique combination of vertigo and existential dread, let me know—it could be jump sickness, or the first sign we’re about to get very lost."

(Responses from any of the crew??)
Actions of LC in the First Four Hours into Jump

[In the first few minutes LC hits the Ship’s Comms, and asks on the Passenger Status]
I tap into the crew channel, voice even, deliberate.

"Said-Ma, Kayla — how are our passengers settling in? Let’s make a good impression. Break out the high-class snacks from the sealed tin, not the ones that taste like cardboard. And make sure Decherrek gets something decent too — nothing that comes out of a dispenser tube."

(Responses from Kayla or Said-Ma???)

LC then looks at Tharrok and Leilani:

"Let’s put together an emergence checklist. Assume we might be a little off when we drop — I am working on a worst case that most of us get sick and Kayla is the only one left. I want it simple enough that anyone with can run it....even me..(LC smiles at Leilani). Just in the event we get sick, I want all bases covered. While this maybe a checklist in the book that all Merchies must know how to do to get their certs, I want to make a list of what you think needs to happen. "

(Thoughts or responses???)

LC then pulls up a blank form on his datapad and start listing the stages.

"First step, immediate coordinate verification from three sources. Then grav drift check, then signal to nearest System Control relay. Life support check before anything else. Print it large, laminate it. Idiot-proof, in case we become the idiots."

LC then passes the datapad across for them to review.

LC waits a moment, for thier feedback, but then says;

"Damn, I am such a bad Captain, I need to check-in on our passengers and see how they are doing."
He looks at Tharrok and Leilani -
"You two know this better than I do and I trust you."

LC then smiles at them and heads off to the second deck to the passenger lounge.

At the passenger lounge LC make the rounds — polite nods, a quick smile where required — and check the presentation of the snacks. I pause by Decherrek’s room,

"Everything to your liking?"

Responses from passengers OR Said-Ma or Kayla?...or Decherrek??

[about the third hour into Jump LC will conduct a Engineering Check-in]
Engineering smells faintly of warm metal and someone’s strong coffee. LC leans against the nearest rail, watching the power plant displays for a moment before speaking.

"Alright, give it to me straight — this cracked trispacial controller. Are we looking at a bubble integrity problem, or just a hit to the plant’s pride? I need to know if we’re riding a thoroughbred or a three-legged donkey right now."

LC fishes a stylus from his Jacket pocket, taps it against the datapad as Tamm gives his monotone feedback and/or Bronz gives his blunt commentary.

"And if you’ve got mitigation in mind, now’s the time. We’ve got 168 hours plus or minus in Jump to keep her from coughing herself inside-out."

responses from Tamm and Bronz on their assessment???

[In the 4th hour — Quiet Word with Decherrek]
LC catches Decherrek alone in the companionway, away from the passengers. Hands in pockets, LC keeps his voice low.

"You’ve been around long enough to smell trouble before it starts. Between this plant issue and the string of ‘incidents’ we’ve had lately — what’s your read? Bad luck, or is someone giving us a slow bleed?"

LC waits, watching his dead-eye Drone expressionless face, but actually is looking at his whole body, wings or tail doing anything out of the ordinary that could signal that something is a-miss.

Response from Decherrek??

Also during any of this time, LC will talk to the crew if they approach him.

At the end of the 4 hours LC plans to have a crew meeting to round out the actions and counter action of the crew with their plans for the 164 hours left in Jump Space.

"Hopefully we don't emerge in Zhodani controlled space, but I believe Fornice is in our future." LC smiles at everyone in the crew lounge
Aug 11, 2025 11:16 pm
After the initial shock of the engineering alerts, Tharrok verifies all of his instruments are operating correctly and scans the readings. "Cap’n, the jump bubble looks solid, no fluctuations. I’ll go back and review the log for anomalies before the bubble stabilized, but I suspect we’re good." He begins pulling up the data for review. "Oh, and I always feel vertigo and existential dread." Tharrok grins widely.
When LC speaks about making a checklist, Tharrok begins bringing up the various checklists and highlighting the parts he feels are the most important. He puts the life support checks first, followed by chronometer verification then position. "Spacer’s Rules: Breathe first, then time, then location before navigation. Comms checks are useful if we are close to anyone else, but if not…"
Aug 12, 2025 4:45 pm
[LC swivels in his chair to look over at Tharrok, one brow arched and a slow grin forming to match the Vargr’s own.]

"Ah, well, if vertigo and existential dread are your default settings, then congratulations — jump space is basically your natural habitat. If I start seeing you relaxed and optimistic, I’ll know we’re in trouble."

[He leans back, the grin sharpening to something between conspiratorial and mildly dangerous.]

"Though I admit, you do wear existential dread well. It’s almost… accessorized."

[Later, as Tharrok highlights his ‘Spacer’s Rules’ on the emergence checklist, LC studies the datapad and gives a short nod.]

"Sound logic. I like it. Breathing before timing before finding out where we are — means we’re alive long enough to be lost. Which is the preferable order of events in my book."

[He flicks the datapad back toward Tharrok, eyes now sliding over to Leilani at her station.]

"Alright, Lieutenant — ex-Navy brain, steady hand, better training than most of us. You’ve seen more jump emergences than the rest of this merry band put together. What’s missing from this list? Assume we might be doing it with half the crew down and the other half vomiting into their helmets."

The smell of strong coffee emanated from Tamm’s bulb of kafe, curling through Engineering and cutting through the usual J-space tang.

"We had a small power bleed when Jump was initiated," Tamm replied to LC, keeping his eyes on the diagnostic holo. "We should be fine until Exit. Right now, Tamm can’t determine if these failures are deliberate or just bad equipment—Tamm wouldn’t be able to tell the difference anyway."

He took a slow pull from the bulb, watching a cascade of green and amber indicators flicker across the display.

"Tamm will conduct an investigation while we’re in J-space," he added. "If it’s sabotage, whoever did it knew exactly where to poke without setting off too many alarms. Tamm will review the maintenance logs for inconsistencies. Maybe something will show up."

Somewhere deep in the ship, a hollow clang echoed through the frame. Tamm’s gaze flicked toward the sound, then back to the holo.

"Or maybe," he said quietly, "the ship’s just trying to tell us something."
OOC:
Tamm will run thorough diagnostics on the powerplant and associated systems and scrutinize the maintenance logs especially the overhaul (with Bronz's help or should we work separately then review the other's results? I guess that would be helping each other.) Tamm will work double shifts unless his performance is seriously hindered.
LC will be informed at the appropriate time. The trouble in Engineering is not secret to the crew. Of course, there's no need to inform the passengers at this time.
The rest of the time in J-space will be spent as usual with his shifts in Engineering, rec time (reading, strength and aerobic training, etc.) I'm assuming I roll 2d6+3; roll+skill+help.

Diagnostics - (2d6+3)

(31) + 3 = 7

Log Review - (2d6+3)

(63) + 3 = 12

[LC leans one shoulder against a bulkhead, the smell of kafe mixing with the faint ozone tang of Engineering. He watches the holo a moment, eyes tracking the shifting green and amber like a man reading a court verdict he already knows will be bad.]

"Alright… so we’re not riding a three-legged donkey. More like a thoroughbred with a limp and an attitude problem. Comforting."

[He glances toward the source of the hollow clang, expression unchanged.]

"If it’s sabotage, that’s one thing. If it’s the ship talking to us, that’s worse. Ships never have anything nice to say."

[His gaze shifts between Tamm and Bronz, a dry edge in his tone.]

"Alright — if you’ve both been over the logs and the gear already, then we chalk it up as one of two things: deliberate and subtle, or just the plant’s personality shining through. Either way, we ride it out."

[He straightens, the hint of a grin playing at the edge of his mouth.]

"Until then, I’ll keep telling the passengers everything’s fine — and try not to look like a man betting against his own ship."
Aug 14, 2025 11:48 pm
Bronz met LC’s remarks with a flat, unreadable stare. His mind went back to the last "accident" with nothing found, despite his gut telling him otherwise. After a long moment, he said quietly, "Sabotage. Now, who would’ve thought…"

He started to turn back toward Tamm, then paused and looked at LC again. "…Any chance it ties to that cargo we’re hauling? Not saying it does, probably something else, but for a drive fresh out of maintenance…" He let the sentence trail off.

Then he turned fully to Tamm, pulling up diagnostics alongside him. He began going through the reports and output logs, methodically cross-checking readings, his eyes scanning for anything — no matter how small — that didn’t belong.
OOC:

Bronz with assistance Tamm with his rolls - so adding his +2 Engineering, right?
Aug 15, 2025 12:28 am
[LC meets Bronz’s stare with one of his own, a slow tilt of the head as if weighing the words before answering.]

"Fresh out of maintenance and acting up… could be coincidence. But I’ve seen too many ‘coincidences’ in my time to keep believing in them."

[He shifts his gaze between Bronz and Tamm, voice taking on a deliberate weight.]

"In your experience — could this sort of fault be planted by the last skip-jumper crew? Day-zero vulnerabilities, waiting for the right jump to wake up and ruin someone’s week?"

[A faint grin pulls at one corner of his mouth, though it doesn’t reach his eyes.]

Any responses by Tamm or Bronz - even get the stare from Bronz of acknowledgement?

"And as for our cargo… if this is tied to what we’re hauling, it’s either very valuable or very unpopular. Either way, I’d like to know before we come out of jump in the middle of someone else’s welcome party."

[ Later after the 'maintenance session LC goes to the bridge where Tharrok is at. He glances toward Tharrok at his station, tone lightening just enough to make the question sound conversational — though the edge beneath it is still there.]

"Tharrok — you’ve seen your share of patched-together drives and suspect maintenance. What’s your read? Could this be the sort of ‘gift’ a previous crew leaves behind for the next poor sods who buy their ship?"

Responses? Any sudden tail switching that stops... when the question is asked?

Tamm replied to the remark. "The overhaul sucked."
OOC:
Helping just adds +1 regardless of the helper's skill level. Should 'baggins make his own rolls?
ADDED: If the two Engineers are on the same task there should only be a single dice roll. If the two are doing tasks with little or no overlap then separate rolls would be good!

Tharrok looks up from his consoles and listens to LC, not just with his ears, but his nose and eyes as well. He considers the question and implications carefully while absentmindedly locking his workstation (old habit and reflex when his attention is diverted). He swivels his G-Couch around to be face to face with the Captain. After a good minute of silent deliberation, the Vargr pilot says, "Seems to me if it is, then they are really, really good. Good enough they shouldn’t have gotten caught."

Tharrok pauses for several moments. He tilts his head, looking at LC. "I'm not much on conspiracy theories, but I’m even less on coincidences. If I had to say, I’d tell that something is going on here that is more than bad maintenance or parts. But as I recall, you’ve had your own experience in the unusual. Although I don’t know why we’d be singled out for such attention…"
Aug 15, 2025 3:42 am
[LC studies the Vargr’s expression — the way his ears set, the subtle shift of his posture — like a man reading footnotes in a contract for hidden clauses.]

"Good enough not to get caught is exactly the kind of technician I don’t like thinking about. Means they had skill, access, and intent — and a long enough view to leave their little surprise for someone else to discover."

[He leans back slightly, letting his eyes wander briefly to the jump readouts before returning to Tharrok.]

"You’re right, I’ve danced with the unusual before. Usually ends with me wishing I’d picked a simpler profession, like juggling knives while blindfolded. As for why us? Could be deliberate, could be we just bought someone else’s bad luck and it’s still circling the drain."

[A thin grin touches his mouth, dry as vacuum.]

"Either way, I’d rather assume we’re being singled out. That way, if it’s coincidence, I’m pleasantly disappointed — and if it’s not, we’re already braced for it when the next shoe drops."

LC thinks reflectively then adds
"We need to talk to Decherrek about this"

Later on day two of the Jump LC will get with Decherrek, and the crew to discuss the previous Skip-jumper crew and the series of unfortunate series of events surrounding the Miss Fortune...and the person Decherrek wants the crew to help chase down. .
Aug 16, 2025 1:20 am
After LC leaves the bridge, Tharrok says under his breath… "I hope there aren’t any telepaths on the ship… I can’t help but think of one name…" He let’s his voice end there. But in his head, a voice nearly screams… Santanocheev!

Down in Engineering a minute inspection of the damaged power-plant component (cracked cryonic trispacial controller) provides a possible lead. The serial number on the component doesn't match the number registered in the Engineering Log. What should be a genuine "Ling Standard Products" device seems quite likely to be a 'forgery', ie a cheap imitation of the 'real thing'. Installed about 5 years back, about the time the original crew started having serious problems meeting their mortgage payments. And a little before they modified the ship with extra staterooms and the under-deck 'hidden' cargo area.

The annual maintenance provided by First Bank of Fornice probably should have caught something like this, Tamm thinks. But it seems really counter-productive for them to skimp on something that might cripple the ship. So what else could be going on here...?
Aug 16, 2025 3:21 am
Meanwhile, up on the Passenger Deck in the Lounge:

Said Ma has completed a routine check of the "Frozens" finding nothing amiss. She hits the kaffe dispenser and then joins Decherrek who is having a lively conversation with the middle-fare passenger Aepheon Telom. They both have stories related to 'skipped' ships and forcibly retrieving stolen properties, and are comparing notes on how to gain entry to a starship with its "anti-hijack" programming on-line...

Thessa Ting and the newly married couple "Terry and Adriana" share another table and are struggling to keep a conversation going. Seems Theodorick (Terry) is doing almost all of the talking, and that has sputtered down to some observations about possible entertainment/tourist opportunities on Fornice in the vicinity of Port-au-Prince.

Kayla Hong has cookies baking and checks on the kaffe-machine to make sure its brewing well and in necessary quantities...

No signs of jump sickness...
Aug 16, 2025 4:04 am
"The wrong serial number, figures," Tamm tells Bronz, the edge in his voice carrying more frustration at the ship than at his companion. He tosses the datapad onto the workbench, where it lands with a hollow clack.

"We might as well use this week to check out as many of the other components as possible."

Tamm watches the expression on Bronz's face; essentially Tamm volunteered them both for double shifts.

The deck plates vibrate beneath their boots again, this time a subtle irregularity—like a stutter in the ship’s heartbeat. Both men freeze for a half-breath, waiting to see if the anomaly grows.
OOC:
I'm just trying to add a little suspense. The noise could be from a slight mis-jump or nothing at all, Miss Fortune is simply noisy on this Jump.
Aug 16, 2025 9:27 pm
Bronz froze at the vibration, feeling it through the deckplates the way a man feels a pulse. He stood still, listening to the engine’s rhythm until it steadied again, then let out a slow breath.

"Figures… can’t say I’m surprised," he muttered, turning to Tamm. "That’s why we always did our own maintenance on the old ship. Couldn’t trust anyone else to keep us flying. That and well..." He cut himself short, letting the rest hang unsaid. For a moment, there was a trace of something almost like regret in his eyes, but it passed as quickly as it came. He remembered the rest of that life too well, always checking your bunk twice, sleeping with a knife close to hand.

He straightened, nodding toward the line of components. "I’ll start this side. We meet in the middle."

Then he set to work, his focus narrowing to the machines in front of him, shutting out everything else.
Aug 16, 2025 9:30 pm
On the Passenger Deck: Adriana, the very young seeming 'bride' of "Terry" has said almost nothing since coming aboard. Keeping her head down, mumbling a 'hello' or a 'thank you' as required. But not volunteering any information about herself. Theodorick (Terry) more than makes up for this, keeping a steady stream of good natured banter going. Though with Thessa Ting not keeping her end of the conversation going, this chatter is beginning to strain and fade....

Adriana suddenly springs to her feet. Looking about the Passenger Lounge as though startled, she loudly announces: "Something's Wrong! I can tell! We're all in danger..." Terry reaches for her hand in a soothing gesture...

"I'm sure everything's fine, Addy." He says calmly. "Nothing to worry about. This is a great ship...."

But Adriana snatches here hand free and says loudly: "No, no its not! Everything is definitely NOT fine!" With that she turns and heads towards her stateroom...
Aug 17, 2025 3:22 am
"Alright, we meet in the middle." Tam agrees. "Focus on the powerplant & J-drive. Anything that can be powered down gets checked. The rest of the 'plant gets checked when we're on shore power."
OOC:
to clarify - we should just check the systems giving us trouble not the whole of Engineering.

LC leaving the Engineers to do what they know how to do the best, LC ventures to Passenger deck to see how everything is going.

[Passenger Deck]
[LC steps out from the service lift, datapad tucked under one arm, brow furrowed in thought as he finishes a note on what he learned in Engineering. He starts to walk down the corridor nearly collides with Adriana, who’s hastily retreating from the lounge, wide-eyed and visibly distressed.]

LC Rains:
"Whoa there—apologies, Miss… Adriana, was it? Didn't mean to bar the corridor with bureaucracy."
[He adjusts his crumpled jacket and gives her a curious once-over.]
"You alright? You look like someone just served you rehydrated vargr-rations in a crystal goblet."

[She doesn’t respond immediately, eyes darting down the corridor toward her stateroom.]
[LC’s tone softens.]

"Look, if the food’s off, or if you’ve taken umbrage with the upholstery—or the crew’s banter, in which case —I can file a grievance in triplicate and make the kaffe stronger. But…"
[He pauses, noting the alarm in her expression.]
"...this isn’t about service, is it? You think something’s actually wrong. Not lounge-wrong. Ship-wrong."

[He steps aside, gesturing toward a quieter alcove by the bulkhead, voice low but attentive.]

"Is it the crew? The jump? Have you felt anything off—pressure shift, systems hum, anything? Or is this something else entirely?"
[He taps his commlink twice but doesn’t yet call anyone.]
"Help me help you, Miss Adriana. If there’s danger, I need specifics. If it’s just a feeling… well, I’ve been in enough courtrooms to know not to ignore those either."

Is a roll required?

Adriana's facial expression has gone 'stony' at L.C.'s unexpected appearance in her way to her stateroom. The initial alarm in her voice and posture have been supressed or otherwise subsided. Her head goes down and she looks at the deck, intent, as if peering beyond the grav-plates into the maze of mechanisms and ductwork below.

"I'm...uh, I'm sorry. I need to get to my stateroom. Please!"

after a pause, listening to LC...

Terry arrives behind Adriana. "Ah, Captain! I'm sure everything is all right. Addy has never 'jumped' before. I'm sure its all nothing. Nothing at all to worry about. Just some sort of space-sickness, maybe. You all right Addy? You're not going to be sick, are you?"

Adriana keeps here head lowered, looking at the deck. Mumbles "I'm...I'm OK. Need something from my stateroom. Need..."
Aug 19, 2025 1:03 am
[Passenger Deck – Corridor outside Lounge]
[LC watches Adriana’s change in demeanor with the quiet precision of a man who’s filed too many post-incident reports. Her alarm fades into a brittle silence — the kind that usually precedes either a confession or a collapse.]

LC Rains:
"Of course, Miss Adriana. Don’t let me keep you."
[He takes half a step back, just enough to clear her path without appearing dismissive. His voice stays low, not commanding — but firm enough to hold the moment.]
"Just… remember you’re not alone aboard. We don’t stand on ceremony when someone’s in distress. If anything changes — or you remember what it was that put you on edge — my door’s always ajar."
[He adds, almost offhandedly, but not without meaning:]
"And you’ll find the stateroom bulkheads more forgiving than the deck plating, if you feel the need to pace."

[He offers the barest incline of his head — not quite a bow, not quite an apology — before turning his attention to the ever-chipper Terry.]

"Mr. Theodorick. Always a pleasure to have a positive outlook on board — Jump does strange things to newcomers, even if the stomach stays settled."
[He eyes the younger man a moment, gauging the overcompensation. Then, more softly:]
"Sometimes it’s just the change of air. Sometimes it’s more personal. Either way, if she needs anything — privacy, talk, tea, stronger things — you come find me or the crew."

[As the couple moves past, LC lets his fingertips linger near the comm toggle at his belt. He doesn’t press it. Not yet. But he files the moment away in his mental ledger — tagged, indexed, and cross-referenced. Then, with a muted sigh, he heads toward the Galley, already composing his next casual conversation with Kayla and Said-Ma. Just a little vigilance — early in the jump, before things unravel.]

[Galley Service Corridor – Shortly After the Lounge Incident]
[LC leans against the stainless bulkhead just outside the Galley, the aroma of Kayla’s cookies mixing incongruously with the faint tang of recycled air. He waits until Said-Ma emerges from checking the Frozens, and Kayla is between tasks — then speaks low, voice dry but deliberate.]

"Right. Just a quiet word, ship’s business. Nothing dramatic — yet."
[He glances toward the aft corridor where Adriana vanished moments earlier.]
"Young passenger, Adriana. Bride of Mr. Sunshine back there — Theodorick. Came apart a little in the lounge. Claimed ‘something’s wrong,’ looked ready to jump out the airlock or into the deck plating."

[He folds his arms, gaze flicking between the two women.]

"Now, I’m not one to medicate nerves or chase ghosts… but I’ve seen that kind of fear before. Doesn’t feel like jump-sickness. Feels like someone who’s seen trouble and doesn’t know how to say it aloud."

[He softens, just a touch.]
"Keep an eye, would you? Not intrusive. Just… professional interest. Subtle check-ins. Tray service if she doesn’t come out. If she asks for anything odd — meds, access, tools, you name it — let me know."

[He shifts his weight, as though the conversation is already forgotten — but the steel in his tone lingers.]
"We’re just hours into jump. If something’s festering, I’d rather lance it before it festers through the hull."

[He nods once, then straightens. Tone lightens — just barely.]
"Also, don’t let me forget to try those cookies before Bronz eats them all. Man’s got a sixth sense for sugar."

LC then grabs two cookies from the tray and heads to his room on the crew deck.

Day 1: Jumpspace - not long after LC. Left the bridge

Tharrok sits at his bridge station as usual for the long-time space flight veteran. At the moment, however, he is annoyed… vexed, really. A month ago, the ship underwent maintenance, supposedly with a fine-tooth comb. They’ve made two jumps and so far, they are 100% for mishaps. Thankfully, they have, thus far, been minor in seriousness.

But it sits uneasy on the mind. No real solid evidence of wrongdoing or some sort of Machiavellian machinations. Just some hinky feelings and the stiffened patch of fur just under his collar. He, periodically and unconsciously sniffs the air (probably some sort of leftover behavior from his canine ancestry). Their potential dealings with the Santanocheev family on their current destination certainly doesn’t help his disposition.

Tharrok, himself, has never actually had dealings with the Santanocheev family-at least not directly and knowingly. But he knows the history of how the Imperium nearly lost the Fifth Frontier War. "Things predictably go wrong around that overbearing, tin-plated dictator with delusions of godhood," Tharrok mutters under his breath. But the thought that the Former Sector Admiral might feel some sort of animosity toward the Captain… that felt a little more concrete… he could smell that tro….

Tharrok catches a familiar scent… actually, a pair of familiar scents… LC and Chocolate Chip Cookies. Locking his work station, the Vargr hops up from his acceleration couch and nearly skips off the bridge, leaving the automatic monitoring systems to do their job. Quickly through the hatch, he catches LC just as he steps off the lift and before he gets to his quarters. Sniffing the air, he notes the two cookies in LC’s hand and says, "Now where in The Marches did you get those yummy-smelling cookies? And are there any more? I’d like to know… I want to know… I NEED to know!" Tharrok’s tongue lols out to one side and there is the slightest beginnings of a drool trail forming at the corners of his mouth.
Aug 19, 2025 5:54 pm
[LC Rains, mouth full, crumbs dusting his rumpled lapel]

"Mmff—uh-huh—these?"
—crunch—
"These are diplomatic-grade confections, you insatiable hound. Acquired under obscure subsection 7.4.2(c) of the Aramis Culinary Exchange Charter, which, incidentally, no one has enforced since the Fondant Riots of 1089."

[He licks a bit of chocolate from his thumb, eyes narrowing suspiciously at Tharrok’s wagging tail.]
"They were in the sealed crate labeled ‘Data Crystals – Obsolete Formats.’ I liberated them during a… how shall we say… spontaneous audit."

—chomp—

"No, there are no more. And even if there were, you'd have to fill out Form 82-C, Petition for Emergency Edible Redistribution, signed by me, Kayla, and one indifferent god."
[devilish smile creeps across his lips]

[He wipes his mouth on his sleeve, then pauses, softening slightly.]
"Tell you what. Go up to the galley on the passenger deck and see if she has any left for ‘redistribution’. Of course that is after the passengers have their fill. Do that and I’ll forget to file the required Notice of Internal Consumption, subclause Dessert-Related. Deal?"

[LC starts walking again, holding the last cookie up like a torch of office.]
"But touch this one and I’ll cite you under Imperial Edict 112: ‘Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Captain’s Confection.’ Punishable by dish duty. For a month."

LC:
Quote:
"Mr.
Theodorick ("Terry") does seem younger than LC, maybe a decade or so, but he seems mature and 'comfortable'. The proprieter of "Chez Terry" restaurant back on Mora. A businessman and perhaps once a chef...

In his usual optimistic tone he responds: "Ah, poor Adriana has never been off Mora before. (he waves a hand indicating everything around) "This is all strange to her. She has led a sheltered life. But she is very smart, and a quick learner. In a day or two she'll be an 'old hand'! Just like us, eh Captain!?! Old hands!"

He turns to go back to the passenger's lounge, but LC's next words stop him.
Quote:
"Now, I’m not one to medicate nerves or chase ghosts… but I’ve seen that kind of fear before. Doesn’t feel like jump-sickness. Feels like someone who’s seen trouble and doesn’t know how to say it aloud."

[He softens, just a touch.]
"Keep an eye, would you? Not intrusive. Just… professional interest. Subtle check-ins. Tray service if she doesn’t come out. If she asks for anything odd — meds, access, tools, you name it — let me know."
"She's not easily frightened, Captain". Terry's voice has dropped into a serious tone. But then he resumes his smiling optimistic voice: "Ah, she'll surely get a wind of those cookies I can smell coming from the auto-chef. Your Steward must have a deft hand or a secret recipe. I must know about that, of course! Share if you would, a kindness to a traveler...."

Sorry, a lot of things to respond to here and I've already skipped ahead. I'll try to catch-up and back-track a bit. Strict chronological order will be broken but not too significant....yet. More coming!

[Passenger Deck – Corridor outside Lounge, shortly after Adriana departs]
[LC watches Adriana disappear down the passage, then turns back toward Terry with the faintest lift of an eyebrow. His voice, when it comes, is low and politely framed — but with a bureaucrat’s edge, filed just sharp enough to draw implication.]

LC Rains:
"Mr. Kavan… I appreciate your enthusiasm for managing the domestic front."
[He gives a light smile — all courtesy, not a single tooth.]
"Though you’ll forgive me if I note you seemed a touch eager to wave off assistance. Most first-time jumpers don’t predict doom with quite so much specificity."

[He pauses, adjusts his cuff, and shifts the tone ever so slightly — less inquiry, more hospitality.]

"That said, the crew respects a passenger’s privacy. We also respect concern — so if either you or your wife find yourselves in need of… comfort, distraction, or something warm, our steward has just replenished the galley with a fresh tray of cookies. Complimentary, of course. A little courtesy we try to extend during Jump Week."

[He offers the faintest of nods, almost a bow.]

"They’re exceptional. As is our steward. We’re quite fortunate to have her aboard."

[LC steps back, letting the moment dissolve, the corridor his once more. His expression unreadable, his posture relaxed — and his thoughts, very much not.]

Later will consult with Kayla, Said-Ma and Tharrok on Terry's responses to gain their input. The Engineer Team needs to concentrate on their current problem set.
Aug 20, 2025 9:30 am
"I'd offer to cook you my famous cookies, but we're probably good for hull sealant right now!" Leilani quipped as she approached the Captain, everything going on had kept her pretty busy the last day or so

"I can offer you paperwork to sign! Any day now we'll get ride of stuff like this and we'll be pure paperless!"
Aug 21, 2025 3:16 am
Decherrek approaches LC, Tharrok, Leilani and passenger 'Terry'.
"Hmmm..." he utters flatly, his visage unreadable as always. "Mister Terry, If I may be so bold. I too have sensed a problem. Is your mate prone to such sensitivity? Has anything like this happened before?"

THEODORICK (Terry) stares at the Droyne for a long moment, color draining from his face. But then he sucks in a big breath and pastes a wide smile back on his face.

Terry sounds chipper as usual as he says: "Ah, you know, Adriana is unflappable. Smart as a whip and usually calm in the face of any adversity. I'm wondering what's got into her myself. Perhaps I should go and find out what ails her? Do you mind, Captain?"

Terry will move to the passageway and Adriana's stateroom unless stopped...

Decherrek looks at the Captain. "Perhaps we should speak of this in private, Captain. In your cabin?"
Aug 21, 2025 3:56 pm
LC Rains:
[LC turns toward Leilani, expression brightening a touch — or at least softening from 'suspicious diplomat' to 'approachable bureaucrat.']

"Leilani, my dear — never let it be said that I fear a cookie challenge. If you think yours can give Kayla’s batch a run for their starches, I welcome the bake-off. I shall serve as impartial judge, with Tharrok as my highly qualified associate in culinary arbitration."
[He winks, then leans in, mock-conspiratorial.]
"Just be advised — she’s got a head start, as this cookie batch already has Tharrok's seal of excellence."

LC turns and winks at Tharrok. Then, gesturing to the datapad she’s brandishing like a weapon — the most fearsome kind: bureaucratic.]
"And as for the paperwork… I live in eternal hope. Though if we ever do go fully paperless, I’ll be forced to find new reasons to loiter in the galley pretending to be busy."

[He offers a grin — actual, not administrative — and a two-finger salute.]
Aug 21, 2025 4:05 pm
LC Rains:
[LC regards Decherrek with a subtle tilt of the head — not surprise, exactly, but a weighty curiosity reserved for those moments when the universe hums in a key he can’t quite place. He listens to Terry’s reply with professional politeness, but his eyes never leave the Droyne.]

"Of course, Mister Kavan. She’s your partner — and your presence might do more good than another question from the likes of us. Please, check on her. Let me know if there’s anything she needs… or anything we ought to know."
[His tone is calm, but there’s iron behind it — an unspoken ‘don’t test me’ woven through the courtesy. He steps aside to allow Terry passage.]

[Once Terry moves off, LC turns to Decherrek and gives a short nod.]

"Private it is. Shall we?"
[LC gestures toward his cabin, already preparing mentally for whatever unorthodox insight the Droyne might offer — and steeling himself for the possibility that the ship’s problems might not be strictly mechanical after all.]

LC Rains:
[LC watches Terry move down the corridor, then turns back to Decherrek with measured focus. The shift in tone was subtle, but unmistakable.]

"Understood. Let’s talk."
[He gestures toward the nearby hatch to his cabin, but before turning, he casts a glance toward Tharrok and Leilani.]

"That said — I trust Tharrok’s instincts and Leilani’s perspective. If what you’ve sensed might touch more than just one system or soul aboard, I’d value their ears in the room. But it’s your lead, Decherrek. We can keep this one-on-one if needed."

[He lets the invitation linger, open-ended, as he steps toward his quarters.]

"I can offer you paperwork to sign! Any day now we'll get rid of stuff like this and we'll be pure paperless!"
Thessa Ting, the courier, approaches Leilani. "There is something wrong, isn't there? I mean, no announcement has been made. Did we mis-jump? Or is there something else wrong? I'm on a schedule, you know. Any delays... I've already been delayed because of the damned Oberlinde screw-up. I'm already going to be late. Damn it!" She seems greatly annoyed if not outright angry.
Aug 21, 2025 5:09 pm
(After moving to a more private spot, speaking to LC and perhaps Tharrok as well)

"Do you know much about Droyne, Captain LC?" This question seems 'out of the blue', very strange...

"Seriously Captain. I am not idling the time. But in case you do not know this; there are many who say we Droyne have mental abilities. Psions, they say. Here in Imperium that is not a good thing. Very bad sometimes. Droyne have been attacked, even killed by mob. Some Imperium sophonts very hostile.

"So, Psion always in danger here.

"If human is Psion, and not Zhodani, what would they do? Only rumors, but some may be part of Imperium Special Security. Serve the Emporer or? Well no one knows, I think. No choice given if discovered.

"Only alternative is mythical PSIONIC INSTITUTE. Is it real thing or only rumor? But if true, that is where Psion who not want slavery in Imperial Service might go.

"Just saying. Psion might sense things others miss.

"Just now I am sensing that things are very much amiss. In more than one way. Is something wrong Captain? Perhaps you will share this knowledge?"
Aug 21, 2025 5:17 pm
Meanwhile....

'Terry' returns from the passenger stateroom passageway, looking distressed. He sees Leilani with Thessa Ting. 'Shaky' (security agent) remains seated, speaking with Steward Kayla.

"Adriana has locked her stateroom hatch and is not answering. I've tried 'knocking', and also intercom. Honestly, I'm starting to worry. This seems highly unusual. Very out of character for her. Is there something we can do?
Aug 21, 2025 7:42 pm
LC Rains:
[LC listens quietly as Decherrek speaks, arms folded, eyes half-lidded but sharp. At the mention of Psions...LC thinks of Zhodani prisons, there’s the briefest flicker in his expression — something cold and remembered.]

"I’ve some experience with the Zhodani, Decherrek. That’s more than enough telepathy for one lifetime, thank you. Beyond that? I’ve no beef with Psions — not the homegrown kind, anyway. You won’t find me dragging anyone before a Tribunal over a hunch or a headache."

[He runs a hand through his hair, the bureaucratic polish briefly giving way to something more personal.]

"As for your mythical Psionic Institute — never seen it. Wouldn’t know where to look. But if it did exist? Well…"
[He gives a thin smile.]
"...the Imperium being what it is, I’d expect it’s hidden for good reason. And if there were a way to funnel people toward it, discreetly and safely? Might be worth building that pipeline. You know, for the greater good… and maybe a modest processing fee."

[He shakes off the flash of mercantile thinking with a shrug, eyes returning to Decherrek.]

"Point is — if you’re picking up on something and can’t get a clear read? That bothers me more than anything else we’ve seen. Come with me."

On LC walk down the corridor he quickly taps out a swift command on his tablet, the interface recognizing his priority flag and directing a message to the crew-only comm channel.]

[Crew Chat – Priority Flag Alpha / Logged LC Rains]
— Mr. Kavan reports Adriana has locked herself in stateroom and won’t respond.
Kayla, Leilani, and Said-Ma: Assist Mr. Kavan. I authorize internal override if necessary to ensure she’s safe. Keep it respectful — but report immediately on crew-only line once you have eyes inside. We need to know if she is okay or not.
One of you — whoever’s best placed — update Miss Ting. Let her know all’s well. No misjump, no anomalies.
Delegation is a virtue. I’m down on the Cargo Deck if needed.
Thank you
— LC

[LC motions Decherrek to follow him and LC heads to the ladder and starts going down to the Cargo deck, making sure Decherrek follows him down. He then heads specifically near the container bound for the Santanocheev family.]
"Let’s test that sense of yours. If something’s festering aboard this boat, I’d rather it not ripen mid-Jump."

DECHERREK "I am not a trained Psion, LC." The reptiliod alien shows no emotion, as usual. "But all Droyne have certain senses. I am feeling two things now. One is that Adriana is...hmmm...is fine. I am aware of her using some sort of.....ability, but I do not know what. She has clearly detected something wrong. Perhaps she is trying to clarify that detection into some useful information?"

pause, walking...

"You suspect something is wrong with that shipment to Santanocheev. Perhaps that is the case. But I am not sure I will be helpful in solving that conundrum. Though I am willing to assist as best I can."

OOC:
Tamm is available for security duty & he has an override if the stewards aren't going to open the door. If help is wanted, just call Engineering. It's likely that Tamm can open the door from Engineering.

OOC:
I would expect that the Steward, and Medical officer would have the over-ride capability for opening the cabin doors to the passengers. Just my thought, the security access would be necessary as a failsafe to lock out the Bridge and Engineering and unlock it. Passenger cabins should open by the owner and the ship's crew.
NEW: Yes, makes sense. The Captain should be able to give stateroom lock "over-rides" to anyone he wishes, Medic and Steward of course, but any designated as "Security" might be routinely included, too.

LC Rains:
[Down on the cargo deck, LC folds his arms and listens as Decherrek speaks, the hum of grav-plates underfoot and the faint scent of Kayla’s cookies still lingering in the air.]

"Understood. Not trained, but still tuned in — that counts for something. Especially when the rest of us are fumbling in the dark."
[He glances briefly toward the passage where Adriana vanished, then back to Decherrek, a note of intrigue surfacing under the usual administrative weariness.]

"If she’s sensing danger and trying to piece it together… that puts her on my list of People Worth Listening To. And not because I like being spooked mid-jump."

[He flicks his eyes toward Tharrok, standing nearby — conveniently close to the cookies, inconveniently far from the bridge. LC’s expression doesn’t shift, but a mental note is quietly filed under ‘Navigator Drift’.]

"As for that Santanocheev consignment — your instincts still matter. If anything itches, even if you can’t name the rash, you come to me. Sometimes the cargo’s clean but the signature’s forged, if you catch my meaning."

[He taps the crew tablet again, issuing updated orders with the same calm urgency as a customs officer sniffing around an unmarked hold.]
Quote:
[Crew Chat – Priority Flag Alpha Continued / Logged LC Rains]
— Adriana Kavan may possess psionic sensitivity. Decherrek senses she’s not in distress, but actively detecting a potential danger aboard.
Said-Ma, Kayla, Leilani: Proceed with soft override protocol and gain access to her stateroom. Confirm safety. If she’s cooperative, ask what she sensed — and how. Be gentle. We need trust, not trauma.
Miss Ting: Continue to reassure. Someone please confirm she knows we’ve had no jump errors, no malfunctions, and she’s perfectly safe.
— Crew-only comms for updates. Priority tag, timestamp.
– LC
[He fires off a secondary message to the engine room — slightly drier, slightly more suspicious.]
Quote:
[Engineering – Log Note / Logged LC Rains]
Continue passive monitoring of the jump bubble and spatial harmonics.
Note: Tharrok is currently off duty rotation and enjoying cookies. Bridge station unmanned. Recommend systems review run from engineering as redundancy.
We may have a sensitive aboard picking up on irregularities. Might be nothing — but I’d rather not find out late.
– LC
[LC slides the tablet back into his jacket, then mutters sideways to Decherrek and Tharrok.]

"Gentlemen, I prefer my mysteries filed under ‘cold case.’ Let’s make sure this one doesn’t heat up."
OOC:
Intent is to reassure Ms. Ting, have someone go into Adriana's room and gain a status report, have someone from engineering monitor the Jump bubble, and get a good cup of Kaffee. Not necessarily in that order. ;-)

I'm sure that Bronz & Tamm are monitoring things while they are checking components.
