The obligatory OOC thread.

One side note/tip for this adventure, you can get XP from finding treasure, magic items, secrets, oaths...etc, but there is another way to earn XP as printed in this module. I will leave it for y'all to discover, but I thought I would say something.

So are we looking to eliminate the sentries or just sneak by them?
Aug 30, 2025 9:21 pm
I mean, we may have to eliminate them later if we don't now, BUT we are level one squishies and I don't think killing every bad guy is the wisest approach here...maybe if we just kill their leader, or free all the captives and simply overrun them as we flee?
Aug 30, 2025 10:11 pm
I think a sneak job is what we're doing and the wisest course of action. We got beat up by the two spiders pretty good, so three sentries is enough to make me think it's a bad idea to fight. Also, sorry GM I'm not sure where captives slipped out of. I think I was trying to write a longer passage to make the sound the distraction caused be in reference to the illusion distraction and the escaped captive make more sense linking the two, as a reference, but it didn't come out right.
Aug 31, 2025 12:30 am
That is what I thought just wanted to double check and make sure.

No worries, Plebeian, there is so much going on that sometimes it is difficult to keep track of details.

@dante_dark Did I do the backstab damage right then?

Yes, it looked right to me.
Sep 5, 2025 12:05 am
That went a lot better than the spiders. We just needed some experience.
Sep 5, 2025 1:05 pm
That, and the dice were on our side this time. We were getting some terrible rolls last time, too. Good planning helped.
Sep 13, 2025 8:03 pm
Sorry, I didn't post yesterday. Work has been insane. And I proctored SAT this morning. That is how you make the big bucks.
Sep 13, 2025 10:01 pm
No worries, life comes first. Glad you're getting the big bucks. Can we get some good loot hauls next?

TIL ... camphoraceous!

Thanks, dante_dark!

Hey crew!

I have to apologize. I attended a board game convention here in Colorado this weekend, and I figured that I would have time to post on Gamers Plane, but I think I greatly overestimated my energy levels. So, I apologize for being gone for a few days. I'm back now.

I have also been thinking that the person-by-person initiative isn't working so well. So, I am thinking of adjusting if that is okay with everyone else. I am thinking that I will just roll everyone's initiative for them and then place characters in initiative groups. I am 100% stealing this from Dhakhan in the Bands of Power game. I will quote what he wrote...
Quote:
1) Given the nature of PbP games, I will roll all initiatives. Typically combat will be side based, meaning all the PCs will go in one batch and then all the NPCs will go in one batch. In order to keep it "easy" to understand, I'll post the current combat lineup in Bold Teal. If your name is in bold, you are free to take your action. If not, no action for you!

Example:
COMBAT! Bold below may act:
Evil Monkey
Bob
Bill
Susan
Army of Grifters

During the PC’s initiative block there is no posting order. Just post your characters action and I’ll interpret them in the initiative order.

2) Please roll attack and damage when you declare your attack. If you roll a 20, edit in an extra dice for the crit damage. For example, make a roll like: Longbow Shot: 1d20+3, 1d8+1.

3) If you think your action will need a roll, post it. If I don't need/want it, I'll just ignore the result. :)

…this was stolen whole cloth from Dramasailor. Thank you!
So, if this is okay with everyone else, I think that this will move things along at a faster clip. I am new at this DMing PBP and still trying to figure everything out.
Sep 21, 2025 11:26 pm
Works for me!
Sep 22, 2025 12:39 am
I am good with that
Sep 22, 2025 5:16 pm
Sounds like a good call, I am all for it!
Sep 22, 2025 5:19 pm
Approved! Which board game convention, if you dont mind my asking?
Sep 23, 2025 2:22 am
It is called B-Con. A small con in the Denver Tech Center. The best game I played was Pan Am. It was really fun.
Sep 23, 2025 10:33 pm
Can the blood lust folks just go back and put a bloody handprint on the statue to end the effect?
Sep 24, 2025 2:37 am
I will post the next room tomorrow.
Sep 24, 2025 9:45 am
Looks like we have a couple skull statues in the great hall with crimson handprints
Sep 24, 2025 12:11 pm
True, Mathias
Sep 26, 2025 6:01 am
I hope folks don't mind if I try something a little ...unexpected? Weird? I dunno. I thought it might be fun?
Sep 26, 2025 6:22 pm
I like it! Clever use of the spell.
Sep 26, 2025 8:16 pm
Nice
Sep 26, 2025 8:27 pm
I agree, that feels very much in the spirit of Shadowdark.
Sep 28, 2025 11:43 pm
Sorry, I have been AWOL for a couple of days. It was a super busy weekend. But I am back now.
Oct 11, 2025 9:24 pm
So with our robes and the Mistress of Pain with us so we do the chanting room? We could take them by surprise and kill them quickly.
Oct 11, 2025 10:20 pm
I'm open! Heading toward the chanting makes the most sense to me, but I would love to see a map of the place first--I am having trouble oriented myself.
Oct 13, 2025 9:31 pm
I'm not sure if anyone has said Tyrus' name out loud yet. Would we recognize him as Kara's partner just from seeing him? Thinking about if we could try to invoke her name, maybe try snapping him out of this trance he's in?
Oct 13, 2025 11:54 pm
The characters who lived a while in Hillshire would know Tyrus at sight and know that he and Kara were a couple.

Hey pals!
I had a ton of grading to do this afternoon and my brain is cooked. I'm going to take tonight off and post tomorrow if that is alright with everyone. The adventure will continue! I just wanted to give everyone a heads up so you don't think that I took off right at the big boss battle.
Oct 21, 2025 4:01 am
Not a problem, thanks for the heads-up!

All good
Oct 29, 2025 12:02 am
Hey everyone!

Since we are nearing the end of the adventure, I wanted to post and thank everyone for putting up with my first time DMing on Gamer's Plane. There were a few kinks to work out, and I appreciate that everyone was patient with me. I hope that you enjoyed the adventure.

My thought is that in the future I would run another adventure, but I am thinking of running adventures like what D&D used to do with organized play. I don't remember what it was called, but I had a character, and I would take that character to conventions or events at game stores and play in adventures in a campaign path. The DM had to sign off on a sheet after you completed each adventure in the path. So, I am thinking that in the future I would run another adventure that is for levels two to three. That way, people can join if they want, or no big deal if they don't want to. So, y'all could keep your character for future adventures.

I am thinking about taking a little break from DMing for a few months, though. The end of the semester is busy for me, and I feel like I am involved in too many games right now, between Gamer's Plane and in-person games. But I do want to come back and run more Shadowdark adventures.
Oct 29, 2025 12:27 am
Thank you for running this adventure for us, and DMing in general. It's been a great time from my perspective, and I've had fun playing Llewellyn, and I hope other people have had fun with their characters. You really did a good job.
Oct 29, 2025 1:26 am
Had a great time playing Ivar and you did a bang up job running it. I would surely like to keep playing Ivar if you run another.
Oct 29, 2025 2:13 am
Agree with the others! Great job GM'ing dante_dark, enjoyed playing Orm, and discovering Shadowdark with an excellent group of players. If you run another game later on, I'd love to take part. In the meantime, take it easy y'all!
Oct 29, 2025 3:47 am
Agreed! I had a lot of fun playing Lillit and I would absolutely play her again if you ran something in the future. Thanks to everyone for being a great group and to you for being a great GM! I hope your end of semester goes well.

KCCInactive for 17 days

Hobb lives!! Four HP and he lives! Well, thanks for running! Great to see Shadowdark really taking off on the site! Great job, DM!
Oct 29, 2025 9:43 am
Thank you for running this game! Had a lot of fun and really enjoyed a chance to try out Shadowdark. Hope to see you come back to DM more games when things settle down for you.

And thanks to everyone else for a good game!
Oct 30, 2025 1:18 am
Thanks everyone for the kind words. Rest assured that I will return with another adventure. Probably I will reach out to this group first before actually posting to everyone...if that is okay.
Oct 30, 2025 4:43 am
please do!
Oct 30, 2025 9:18 pm
Sounds like a plan.
Oct 30, 2025 11:36 pm
Love it! Thanks again guys. Now I'm off to comment on some student essays.

What happens when I retire the game? Do we lose all access?

Also, there should be a friend button in Gamers Plane.

If you retire a game, you can still see it. Click the Games button above, go to "My Games", scroll to the bottom. There should be a collapsible box of Retired Games.
