Character Creation

Aug 8, 2025 9:15 pm
Howdy everyone!

Once again, here is a link to the quickstart rules if you want to old school roll some physical dice. And here is the quickstart character creation guide.

I recommend using Shadowdarklings to set up your characters. We are starting with Level 1 characters. Remember that we are only using the core rules and the first three Cursed Scroll vines.

Once each of your has rolled up your character, I would love to see a one-paragraph backstory and some sort of description as to your connection to the village of Hillshire (how did you find yourself in the village? maybe you lived there your whole life.)

Here is The Pitch one more time...
Early this morning, cultists of the Crimson Hand raided the nearby village of Hillshire, capturing several villagers before disappearing into the night. Sister Inna, a priestess of St. Terragnis who escaped the attack, hopes to enlist the PCs in rescuing the villagers, especially Father Marcus (a pillar of the community), saying they can keep any of the chapel's treasures recovered from the raiders.

Ivar is a human thief whose village was attacked and burnt to the ground by a rival Jarl. He was only 10 at the time and was able to grab a sword and bow before he escaped and has been on his own ever since. He came to the village of Hillshire by just wandering around and has sustained himself by "finding things". He is very good at that and from time to time villagers pay him to find things they have lost which has enabled him to afford some leather armor and some other odds and ends. He has always kept his weapons from his home and his Gods. That is his link to the past.

I just want to double check:

This is what I see when I click the link. Is that to say that we are using some of the Core Book and the first three scrolls?

Or does the above picture accidentally exclude witches, goblins, desert riders etc etc? I’m not settled on anything yet, but just curious about how much of the set out resources are to be used!
Aug 9, 2025 3:50 pm
Yeah, I just wanted to keep it simple so just the core rules and the first three zines.
Aug 9, 2025 3:56 pm
Hi y'all! Thanks for the invite Dante! Should have a character submitted today or tomorrow
Aug 9, 2025 4:25 pm
I just went and checked my link that I sent for Shadowdarklings because of KCCs post and I had a filter still set from the last time I was sending out the link for my in-person game. Sorry about that. Here is the link again with everything...

https://shadowdarklings.net/settings/sources=CS1,CS2,CS3,SD&ancestries=1,2,3,4,5,6&classes=1,2,3,4,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14

You also could just go to Shadowdarklings and just make sure that you are only using material from the core rules and the first three zines.

Llewellyn the Outlander

https://shadowdarklings.net/share/cdo0t6zNX2JDtoWaDgLR

Llewellyn's type isn't typical in Hillshire, he's rough around the edges. He comes from a distant land, and arrived in the area some time ago, but given his heritage, has never fully integrated among the Hillshire set. He is a boorish, hard-set and hard-nosed fighter that has a penchant for saying what's on his mind, and not one that's made for the slower paces of village life as it is in the more settled places like Hillshire, but life led him to Hillshire after his own tribal village was sacked and ruined by Orcish warrant that left him homeless as a younger lad in his adolescence and a warrior took pity on him and brought him to Hillshire and taught Llewellyn all he personally knew. That man was a ranging type, and held some property just outside of Hillshire's limits back in the day, trapping and hunting to suffice. He eventually grew older and got sick and left Llewellyn to fend for himself after an unfortunate passing, in his stead, and so Llewellyn is a part of Hillshire as much as he is not in old Cormac Hunter's cabin. He frequents the village proper enough because he thirsts more for the companionship of people and what refreshments they have to offer more than Old Cormac did, so Llewellyn is a different personality than Cormac ever was.

Awesome looking barbarian, Plebian. When you have a minute, you can create the character here in Gamer's Plane. Feel free to use the character sheet I posted above, and then you can submit the character to the gam,e and I will accept.

Orm, Dwarf Wizard, God's Blood:

Orm never knew his father, and his mother barely spoke of him, her memories of the old man like that of a foggy dream. He knew his father must've been special though, or at least different, as Orm didn't look like your typical dwarf. Even as a child, he had a gaunt, almost skeletal face, despite being healthy as a horse. His inquisitive, bright blue eyes were offset by a permanently intense stare. Oh yeah, and magic came to him as naturally as a duck to water.

Only when her mother was on her death bed decades later, in her final moments, she pulled Orm in tight and whispered, with an intensity and lucidity she hadn't been able to show in years, "Go find him. Go find Ord. Go find your father…."

And so he did, high and low, but old Ord played the role of absentee father quite well. If he was going to honor his mother's final wish, he needed a different plan.

The dwarf had been visiting Hillshire for a few days, consulting with Father Marcus, when he woke up to news of the raid. Rushing over to the village center he met with Sister Inna and volunteered to rescue the townsfolk. As a priestess of one of the Four Lords (to which Ord belonged), perhaps St. Terragnis could put in a good word for Orm and get his Dad to finally pick up the damn phone.

Life among goblin tribes is rarely peaceful, and never kind. Not that Nikkghak would know. His memory of that time is like a fleeting dream, lost to time. Only rarely does he recall images of that brutish, filth-ridden warren of his childhood.

No, Nikkghak's real life started one stormy night, on the doorstep of Hillshire's church. Beaten and bruised, the blood washing away in the pouring rain, the goblin child's life would have ended there but for the mercy of the priest that found him.

Life among the clergy was quite the change. It took Nikkghak a long time to stop looking over his shoulder for hidden dangers. It took even longer to stop sleeping with a dagger under his pillow.

Because of the way his appearance unsettled churchgoers, he kept out of sight when possible. Instead, he fetched waters from the river, rang the bells and did whatever repairs were needed at the church. And whenever there was a sermon or gathering, he could be found in some shadowed corner, or crouched on the beams in the ceiling, mimicking the words of the priests in quiet awe.
Here's Nikkghak the goblin priest! I kept the identity of the perso who took him in vague, since I don't know who is appropriate, but I imagine it could certainly be Father Marcus if it fits. Which would give Nikk ample motivation to get him back.

Lillit's Tale

Lillit hails from a small oasis town far to the west known as Almeria, where she grew up as an urchin doing odd jobs for the merchants who came and went with their caravans. When she came of age, she was press-ganged into service to a cult of Shune. Eventually, she was brought into the cult as a full member and, for a time, thought she had found a home and a family. After a few short years, however, she came to see that the Vizier who led the cult was corrupt and used the teachings of the goddess to exploit and abuse his followers, Lillit included. She spoke out and led a group of people to challenge the Vizier, but he had learned of her plans in advance and a larger number awaited her, in ambush. The Vizier's men slaughtered the "unbelievers," but Lillit was able to escape.

She hid on a wagon of a passing caravan to escape, only emerging at their destination far to the east of Almeria, near the village of Hillshire. She still holds true to the tenets of Shune as she understands them, though she seems to be alone in this region in her reverence. Most have a very different impression of Shune, rather than worship her as Lillit does. Whether there is any truth to Lillit's understanding or not remains to be seen.

Now she seeks a way to provide for herself and make her way in this new, strange land to which she has recently arrived, all alone (well, except for her familiar, a snake named Rasazs).

Love the stories and artwork!

Synaptic, I accepted your character sheet into the game.

Once everyone has transferred over their character, we can get started. Y'all's backstories are giving me some great ideas to get us going.

Hobb
Puddlefoot
https://i.imgur.com/2QxSgQv.jpeg"There’s been a Puddlefoot in Hillshire for as long as there’s been a Hillshire for a Puddlefoot to be in! After all, who were it you think named the place? Plenty of odd ducks about these days, no doubt about that, but the Puddlefoot name still means something around here!"

No longer a young halfling, Hobb Puddlefoot has been around Hillshire since the day he was born; like his father before him and his father before him. There ain’t a soul in Hillshire that Hobb Puddlefoot don’t know by name! And there ain’t a soul in Hillshire that don’t know Hobb by name, neither!

If that means he has to don his old armor, pick up his cudgel and batter the backside off some Crimson Hand, well then so be it.

Absolutely love Hobb Puddlefoot! What an illustrious family!

Poor, poor Hobb! Are there no younger Halflings willing and able to defend the village? Hobb has 4hp and AC13. He’s as strong as a bull though!
Aug 11, 2025 10:48 pm
Alrighty, I am going to start. Plebeian, when you submit your Gamers Plane sheet, I will accept it, and then you will be able to post as your character. But I am rearing to go.

Also, side note, I am a teacher and I just started back at work today. I don't think it will keep me from posting regularly, but I thought I would mention it.

I would also like to keep the game fairly clean as far as language is concerned. I'm thinking PG-13 with a ban on the f-word, especially. This is a personal preference. I am religious and language is one of the big things that I try to stay away from. I appreciate it.
Aug 12, 2025 2:23 am
Works for me.
Aug 12, 2025 3:54 pm
Okay I am relatively new to Gamer's Plane and have no idea how to work the characters sheets on here, cab someone give me a pointer on that? I see the template on the other page, but where do I put it? And how do I send it anywhere and so on?
Aug 12, 2025 5:03 pm
Yeah, we can help you, Plebeian.

When you open the spoiler box that contains the sheet on the other page, there is a button at the top that says Create Character. If you press that, it will make a copy of the sheet for you here on Gamers Plane and then you can enter in your details from the character sheet you made on Shadowdarklings.

Then you will save it as one of your characters here on Gamers Plane and then you can go to the game page for this game. Here is a LINK to that page. There is a spot where you can submit a character to the game and then it will show up for me to accept it.

Once that character is accepted, you will be able to post as your character rather than your personal persona. I was confused when I first started too. No worries.
Aug 12, 2025 9:51 pm
I filled out the character sheet and followed the link and clicked Submit, but I don't know it that did anything, it didn't really click through to anything, so I have no clue if it went through. So I don't know if my character was submitted or not, but I tried submitting a character.
Aug 12, 2025 9:57 pm
Look perfect to me, Plebeian. I accepted your character and how you can post as your character in the adventure.

You do not have permission to post in this thread.
