"I thought you said something about helping!" Frank demands, following you. "We have been and talked to all the 'people in the city' and no one is willing to help." They sound desperate, desperate enough to be pleading with a vampire who just attacked them both for help with their plight.
You are back in tunnels you know, and you can easily find you way home or to your Haven/Harbour from here. You don't know what day it is, but your phone —which should now have signal again— is flat.

Circe was not planning on your opening up and dumping real problems on her, she was prepared to criticise your choices and complain about your behaviour, but finds herself ill-equipped to deal with the complexities of the reality you present —and this is with all the truly weird details redacted.
"So, you are still seeing that guy? What are you plans tonight? Do you plan to bring him back..." She might be intending to say 'to your bed', or just 'here', but chickens out and looks away, confused and not sure what to think.

Dr Johansen did his work under local antithetic, it only being superficial (at least no one is calling it 'only skin deep'). But your zoned out demeanour has them worried and you are kept for a few hours 'for observation'. There is no further mention of your 'boyfriend', your lack of agreement may have been treated as implying some culpability on his part and they are always wary about guys in situations like yours.
You are moved to a room, and must have fallen asleep —they gave you many medications, and some of them may have messed with your mood or head.
At first you think you are alone in the room. It feels empty, but as you look around for something to fix your dry mouth, you notice a figure, standing by the window looking out into the dreary parking lot and the rain. It is dark, but a car's headlights pan past outside and illuminate your visitor.
He is an old man, pale and washed out, his white hair floats around his head like a halo, or like unspun cotton. He is wearing a grey suit and, along with his colourless hair appears almost unreal.
Even staring at him you still get the 'feeling' that the room is empty.
What do you do?
You can mark a Faint Harm of 'Blood Loss' or something similar, and one Serious Harm like 'Scaring wound on your inner thigh', which you can try deal with and eliminate, the 'sutured wound' will heal over the next few days or so.

You sustained 3-Harm from the vampire bite. Emma was spent.
She didn't sleep the night before after staying with David at the hospital. She donated like a pint of her blood to Chablis merely a week ago, and Tara has taken even more from her that morning. No wonder she felt like a shell of herself. Hollowed out, after so much has been taken out of her.
Her body was crying to her to rest, but she still couldn't sleep. She only sank into a dreamless sleep once they slipped something into her IV. It must have been hours. Probably even longer, when she opened her eyes again. At first she thought she was still dreaming. The man standing in her room had a surreal quality to him, as if he has been painted in with a pencil.
Her eyelids dropped shut again. It was probably a hallucination. Drugs, or exhaustion, playing tricks on her.
He was still there when she opened her eyes again, and she let our a long drawn sigh as she pulled herself up on her elbows
"Leave me alone" It was more like a plea than a demand. "I just… want all of you to leave me alone."

Persephone feels the tension in the air as she trauma dumps a bit onto Circe; she sees her little sister squirm uncomfortably. Though the two sisters have always been on good terms, they haven't ever really been confidantes, sharing their personal struggles and traumas. It took Pers years before she told Circe about her assault, for example. Their parents had instilled just too much shame around being anything less than perfect, and mental health was never discussed, so the two girls never learned to communicate that way with each other.
So Persephone lightens the mood. She laughs and eggs Circe on, saying, "Bring him back? Back and what, Circ? Back to smash?" As Circe throws her hands over her face and bursts out laughing, Persephone doubles down. "Or maybe it'll just be a sloppy toppy?"
The two sisters laugh, the tension broken, and Persephone answers more seriously, saying, "if any of that is gonna happen, we'll go to his place, ok? But honestly, after last night, and this morning, and now this afternoon... I'm sore."
Circe protests, "TMI TMI!" but they both laugh anyway. Persephone smiles, secretly thinking, Honey, if you knew the half of it...
She sends another text to Henry, asking if they are still on for tonight at 7, and where they'd like to meet.

Despite the broken tension, Circe is worried, it is like you are a stranger again, all the time spent apart while you worked on your 'project' and the implication of crushing failure only to be turned around into 'great prospects' and emigrating to a foreign country. Your admissions that you are not happy with your job, but can not get out of is not something she can relate to, she has never had a job, but doesn't see why you can't just leave.
She wants to ask you if you are 'being safe', but doesn't know how to, or what to do with an answer, it feels to her like there is more to that question and she does not understand what is going on with you. She lets the laughing and the claims of TMI wash away her questions.
"I could just watch a movie in my room?" She says, not sounding all the enthusiastic about that, but also wanting to be a part of your life and actually get to talk to the people you are ... dating.
Henry replies promptly: "I am getting off work now. I though to come to you?" It is hard to tell over text but he almost sounds disappointed you are asking where to meet.

Emma leaned back against her pillows and started rubbing her temples. She watched the man, studying his faintly translucent form for a long, long while. She didn't want to say anything, but the longer he stayed in her room, the more agitated she became.
Finally, she admitted defeat, and sighed softly:
"…What do you want?"

Persephone frowns at her phone and then regards Circe in thought. She sighs deeply and her shoulders slump.
"I...Damn. I can explain it all, but it's a lot, and some of it is really weird and hard to believe, and well, it's a big hot mess. If you wanna hear it, I can lay it aaaallll out for you. Henry wants to come over here, actually, and he and I are gonna talk about IT. Like, the stuff that's going on with me, and my weird work situation. He and I are dating, but we may also work together to get me out of my bad work commitment. You know?"
She steps forward and puts her hand on Circe's shoulder. She looks at her earnestly and says, "You're my sister and I love you. And all I've done is been a nightmare sister since you got here. And, this weekend, I... something bad happened to me and I... I don't know if I can keep this all up any more, without talking about it... But I don't wanna trauma dump and, well, you know how it is..."
Circe most certainly would know that Persephone's last sentence, about knowing how it is, refers to how difficult it has always been for their family to talk honestly about painful feelings, or failure, or trauma. After all, Circe was there when Persephone tried to tell their mother about her sexual assault, and her mother steadfastly refused to believe "that such a nice boy could do such a thing." She said awful things about Persephone that night, and Circe never forgot it, but Persephone and Circe have never really discussed the fallout.
Persephone looks at Circe with pain on her face, both at the thought of what she might share, and at the awkwardness of talking about such things with family. She doesn't want to burden little Circ after all, but it may be time to tear down a few of the walls her parents built to keep her safe--walls that also keep her isolated.

'Waterman' was in The Administrator's files, you can't recall, lying here in a hospital bed, exactly what was said, and you don't think it was too heavy on details —like the man himself, it was a bit fuzzy— but you got the feeling he was considered 'the enemy'... and, given the nature of your relationship with Uskglass, that could bode well: 'the enemy of my enemy' sort of deal?

The 'Waterman' hadn't answered her other questions, and she doubted it was by oversight. His name did ring a bell, however, but what she remembered reading about him didn't make her feel safer. She didn't like 'the Administrator', but she didn't think of him as her enemy either. If anything, the idea that this man was someone Uskglass couldn’t deal with made her nervous. That meant he was something powerful...and dangerous.

"Really?" Benji asks, curious. "Like who?"
He is not headed back to Piccadilly, but instead makes his way toward the exit he found that took him out into Hyde Park. He’s covered in blood, after all, and doesn’t want to be spotted at his station like this. There will likely be fewer people at Hyde Park, what with the weather — certainly fewer that would recognise him, at least.

"Hey, where are we going?" He asks once your destination reveals itself. He is obviously hoping you changed your mind and will show then the way down rather than another way out that they may already know about.

Emma only nodded. She was still so tired to argue with him, and she couldn’t find a reason to even try.
She allows her head to sink back into the pillow and closed her eyes, hoping that the next time she opens them she would be back in bed with David… and all of this, ALL of this, would have been nothing more than a bad dream.

So much for waking up beside David.
She sighed softly to herself, then glanced around the room, trying to get her bearing.
She no longer felt as exhausted, but that only meant she could think about all the things that has been bothering her; losing her purse, with her wallet and her cash and her credit cards and her gym membership and her apartment keys, and the hard drive she rightfully stolen. The fact that she didn't have any clothes to walk out of the hospital with. Worrying about David. Worrying about being scarred for life.
It was easier just to close her eyes and pretend none of it ever happened. To stay in a warm bed like this forever, rather than face her problems.
The only thing that finally forced her to open her eyes again was the thought of her husband, somewhere out there, panicking about where she was. Forcing herself to sit up straight, and still feeling a little dizzy, she searched for a button to call for a nurse.

"I’m going home," Benji answers, unknotting the blood-stained cravat around his throat and stuffing it in his pocket. His coat is dark enough in colour to hide any blood stains, at least at a quick glance, so he buttons it up to cover his ruined shirt and waistcoat. "When I said you should follow me, I meant that you should return to the surface with me and live to see another day, rather than foolishly wandering straight into a den of vampires. I wasn’t promising to help you." Even so, he can feel his resolve beginning to waver. He did promise those humans he spoke to that he would do what he could to help them… "May I ask… is it someone specific you’re looking for or are you trying to put an end to the disappearances in general?"

With David sick and bed-ridden (or hopefully still bed-ridden, though the chances that he has not noticed that you are missing are slim-to-none), and Bev not answering, and Henry a little freaked out, and Elliot missing, and Persephone being a bitch, you find yourself in the unusual position of having no one to call to bring you clothes and pay for a cab...
It takes forever for the nurse to arrive, she is glad to see that you are awake and responsive. "And how are you feeling?" She asks. "Doctor says you are to stay off that leg, if you want it to heal right. Try not to move it, and don't scratch it or fiddle with the dressings." These are things you probably should have known before now.
She offers you a bed-pan to relieve the bladder-pressure, but, if you insist, will also aid you in hobbling to the room's loo.
Your phone, she informs you, if you ask, is locked in the room safe. No, it is the only thing in there, you had nothing else.

The 'hunter' duo deflate at your implication that you are not going to help, just like everyone else. But there is a renewed glimmer of hope when you enquire about their motivations.
"It is dangerous down here." They say. "People go missing. There are stories... horror stories no one believes and cover up stories no one believes... but we... we saw something, we did not know what... but now we saw you too, and that proves we are not going crazy! There are things down here. 'Dozens', you say! And they take people... and we can't just let that keep happening."
Now they know 'vampires' exist their resolve is... well... bolstered, but also altered, they are going to need to do their research into how to kill these vampires, so they may have a better chance... but Alasdair is not just a vampire in the sewers as many believe, he has an army and is prepared to repel anyone who tries to enter his demesne.

The nurse's instructions didn't put her at ease. How exactly was she supposed to 'stay off that leg'? Was she supposed to get around on a wheelchair for the next few weeks? Stay in bed? She was growing more and more agitated the longer she thought about it, and being well enough to start thinking about everything that has gone wrong only made her panic.
"Could you… maybe bring me my phone?" she managed at last. She had to call David. Tell him she was alright. Sorta. "And has anyone… seen my handbag? It’s got my wallet inside. Everything, really."
A familiar lump in her throat threatened to turn into sobs again, but she managed to force it down, taking deep, long breaths to try to calm herself down. "Do you know when is Bev's next shift?" Bev didn't answer her before, but she was out for most of the day. Maybe she tried reaching her while she was wheeled off to surgery. She needed a familiar face right now.

The nurse is friendly and pleasant, consoling you to the best of her ability during your near-panic attack.
"Of course, dear." She says, going over to the safe. "I can give you the code, for when you sleep. But you should not be walking, so maybe just call us to lock it up again?" She seems to think you will be here long enough to be sleeping again.
"Your handbag? No, sorry dear. All we received was a bag of ... clothes." There is space for an extra word before 'clothes' as if she does not want to say 'contaminated' and remind you of the trauma. "But there was only a phone for the safe, nothing else in there..." She says.
"Oh, wait. How did that get in there?" She says to herself, returning with you phone and a business card and a puzzled expression.
The business card is expensive-looking, cream coloured with embossed shiny fuchsia lettering.

Despite the extravagance and cost, the writer in you can't help but notice the possible missing apostrophe at the end of the name, but more curiously, even though there is nothing that would show this, there seems to be an emphasis on the first syllable.
"Bev...?" She hesitates a moment before answering. "I don't know when she will be back." She says evasively.
What do you do?

There is some relief in having her phone back. She barely registered the rest of what the nurse said. The business card. Bev. Staying at least another extra night (how many has it been, anyways?). She would think about what it all meant later. Right now, she only wanted to do one thing – call David.
"Thank you" she mumbled, and didn’t wait for her to leave before unlocking the phone and looking at the stream of all the missed calls/messages. She didn’t waste any time scrolling through them. She would do that later.
She placed the call to her husband immediately, putting the phone next to her ear as she bit down on her lip, trying to think how she would explain any of it to him.

"Ah. Well, then I am afraid that I cannot help you," says Benji, sadly. "If it was to be a rescue mission, there might have been something we could do, but if your goal is extermination… There’s a whole army of them down there. They have guns. Besides, even if, by some miracle, you succeeded in destroying that particular den of vampires, it would not put a stop to the disappearances. What do you intend to do? Kill every vampire in London?"

Persephone sighs heavily. She takes Circe's hands and walks her over to the sofa and says, "You know how bad things got for me when my company collapsed after grad school, right? When I was so desperate to save what little chance of success I had left with the app launch? I went to every venture capitalist I knew, and they all passed. No one wanted to invest it, not after it had collapsed when my ex ran off with my funds. Well... I was approached by one investor who made me an offer I thought I had to take. So I did, but it was a terrible, terrible mistake. I sold my soul to him for the money to bail me out and restore my parents' retirement fund they'd loaned me. And now he owns my soul and I am damned."
Persephone holds up a hand to quiet Circe before she can respond. She continues, saying, "I know what you're thinking--Pers, you're being overly dramatic again! I wish, but not this time, sis. He... he was actually a demon, Circe. Like a biblical, supernatural, from Hell kind of demon who buys and sells souls via infernal contracts. And now I work for him. And I am going to prove it to you. But, to do that, I have to do something that absolutely will freak you out. But listen to me, Circe: I am still your sister, OK? And I will never hurt you, ever. But this is what I am now, and I am trying to figure out how to deal with it. OK, are you ready? I promise you're safe. Here, let me step back..."
Circe begins to stammer in confusion, saying, "What...? What are you ? Are you being serious right now? Ohmygod Persephone are you on drugs?? Or is this, like, a psychotic break?? Oh my god..."
But before Circe can spin up a full blown panic attack, Persephone stands, spreads her arms, and transforms.

"Emma. Are you alright? I was so worried!" David says by way of greeting, no 'where have you been?' accusations, just concern for your well-being. He does not sound a whole lot better than when you left him, still hoarse and weak, but he does not sound worse, and he kept himself going well enough to be able to answer the phone after one ring.

"So you will help us with a rescue mission?" Frank says, waving Ernie to silence and latching onto your —possibly-misspoken— 'offer'. "You made it out. You know the way." He is ignoring the fact that you are also a vampire, and may have only 'made it out' because your are friendly with the 'army below', that fact is inconvenient.

"Oh my god! ... Are you mocking me? Is this because of 'those books' I read!" Circe demands, her confusion and panic leading to tears... because... nothing happens.
This is the second time you have had ... trouble performing when it come time to change... the last time you literally died, this time it may feel like you are literally going to die of shame. At least you did not take your clothes off for this demonstration.
'Lebowski' did not go into details, but you gathered from his hints that 'they owed you' and therefore could not just let you die. That your Patron brought you back from the dead, but that does not seem to have washed away their disappointment in your performance, and you will still have to make it up to them before you invoke their influence and power again. Your taint and demon-form might not be 'what you are'... maybe it is something you can get rid of if you can weasel out of your deal?
Maybe, also, your thoughts about getting creative with your ... er... seduction of Viviana are not as clever as you thought? These are demons who have been spinning clever deals since before you were born... since before your country was born... since before your parents country was born... Did your Dark Patron know you would need extra motivation to do your job this first time? Or are they just teaching you a lesson? Damn, that contract sure would be useful to read.
"If you don't want to tell me, just don't. You don't have to insult me." Circe says, failing to hold back the tears.

Persephone stands, confused, her mind racing. What the... Are you offing kidding me? Why... OH. Oh no. He... he took it away...
Persephone's face twists in rage. She picks up a tasteful (and undoubtedly expensive) vase on the side table and throws it across the condo into the kitchen, where it shatters all over the marble countertop and spotless sink. She yells a guttural string of curse words, turns and grabs her purse angrily, and storms out, leaving her poor little sister to cry alone.
She calls the car service and heads straight to Wentworth's office. When she arrives, she barges past the receptionist, ignoring her protests, and throwing open his door. As it swings open, she screams, "Give me my goddamned contract you scumbag! Now!"

"Was that it?" Circe calls after you, not overly impressed with your Incredible Hulk (though she is thinking 'Hulk Hogan' by mistake) impression of demonic fury. She stands flabbergasted as you storm out, irritated you made a mess of the nicely cleaned condo... all the remaining detritus, clutter, and mess from the party is so much less than there was before they 'cleaned up' that she actually thinks she did a good job.
"Persephone." Wentworth greets you expansively. "Good to see you back with us." He says, soundling like there may be layers of meaning in the expression. "Won't you have a seat." He motions to the comfortable chair opposite and the freshly prepared drink, just as you like it. He does not seem surprised by your barging in, and is unmoved by your insults.

"I'm sorry..." She blurted out as soon as she heard his voice. "I'm so sorry, I really messed up"
She drew her knees up to her chest, curling up into herself as if she was six year old again "I thought I could handle it, but I couldn't" she clutched her phone more tightly in her hand "I’m at hospital. And my handbag...my wallet. My clothes. Everything. I can’t even get out of bed..."
Her voice trembles. She didn't make a lot of sense , but all she could manage was word- fragments. Sniffing, she pressed her fingers against the corners of her eyes to keep herself from tearing up again. "I'm sorry. I can't..."

"'Hospital'!?" David exclaims —possibly suggesting he had not thought you would have such a good excuse? "Lost your clothes!?" His mind is racing about what that could mean, but you hear him take a steadying breath before continuing.
"Are you alright? What do you need? Give me your ward and room number and a list of stuff and I will be there in half an hour." He says, but you know that he is still ill and should be going out in this weather... but you also know that he will brave hell and high water to come to your aid.

"No!" she sounded almost desperate. "You’re sick. You can’t - I don’t want you driving in this weather. Please."
The sobs she’d been holding back finally broke through, hot tears running down her cheeks. The thought of something happening to him because of her was unbearable. Worse than anything that happened to her
"I’m not going anywhere," she managed to say between her heavy breaths "I just… I didn’t want you to worry."
she knew how ridiculous she sounded the moments the words left her lips. This call could only make him more worried, but she was finding it hard to think straight. Nothing made a whole lot of sense anymore.
"I’m sorry," she sniffed as her nose started running again "you need to stay in bed... you can't, because of me..."

At the sight of Wentworth, his smug face, and his words, Persephone's rage builds and builds and breaks, like a wave upon the rocks. She squeezes he hands into fists and then screams a curse at the top of her lungs before storming over to the sofa, into which she collapses and begins to sulk.
After a moment, she releases a long sigh--a sigh of defeat. She leans forward, takes the drink, and downs it in one go. She looks at him and says, "I'm gonna need a few more of those. And I'm tired of being in the dark and doing all this half-assed. I need my contract, but also some goddam training or something. How do I get this girl to willingly sign away her soul? I literally have no idea how to even broach that topic. What do I do, secretly take compromising photos and then threaten to go public unless she signs? Oh. Oh no, not that. There's gotta be a better way, yeah? Wouldn't that bring way too much attention to her? To us?"

Wentworth snaps his fingers and the receptionist appears at your elbow, offering you another drink —you can't be sure but there may be just the slightest hint of an annoyed look at Wentworth and the glass you already have. Wentworth ignores her speaking openly.
"So, you have made contact with the target." Wentworth says, ignoring the bit about the contract and training. "Good, good. 'Comprising photos'? You say? Why? Have there been compromising situations? Already?"
He does not seem overly concerned about drawing attention, there is no 'us' in that equation.

Persephone takes the drink, downs half of it, and leans back, a smug smile on her face. "Yes there have been compromising situations Repeatedly. She is scared of nothing more than having the world--and her employer--know she's gay, so blackmail could work. What's more, I haven't just taken her body; she's falling for me." She downs the other half and waves the glass in the air to her side, awaiting the refill. She does not tell Wentworth that she has grown fond of Viv, however; she has locked that part of herself away for the moment. This is the time for hard nosed negotiation.
She leans forward and points a finger at Wentworth with the hand holding the glass. She says, "Listen up, Little Lord Fauntleroy. I can get you her. I can get you whoever you need. But I need a little quid pro quo, you hear me?"

She shrugs, having no idea how to handle that, and intends to head back to her condo.

Persephone just stood there, looking at Wentworth, feeling utterly defeated. Even though she wanted to kill him where he stood, she knew there was nothing she could do to this man. Especially without the favor of her patron. She hated to admit it, but, at least for now, she needed it. She just shook her head and said, "Fine."
She turned and left, the buzz she had started to develop quickly fading as her anger transformed back into self-loathing.

Maybe she was just being paranoid. Everything lately had been spiraling out of control, and it was easier to assume the worst. Maybe Mrs. Spunklecleif was nothing more than a nosy old neighbor trying to help.
Was it really so odd to expect kindness out of total strangers?
She couldn't explain to herself why she was so worried. All she could do was talk with her some more, to try to put her mind at ease:
"He does," she agreed with her when she said he needed rest "Are you… taking care of him?"

She steps inside the door and closes it with a little too much force, causing it to slam loudly. In a tone that ie one part confusion, one part accusation, she says, "Ummm?? I see you two have met?"

"You... you 'need to go home and rest'?" Frank says incredulously. "But... you are a vampire!" The strangeness of hearing a vampire needing to sleep slightly offsets his concern that they are also vampires down there, and the people he wants to save might not have time.

Henry jerks away guiltily, turning to face you. You see a large, damp splotch of tears (and other facial fluids) on his expensive shirt from where Circe was crying.
"What did you say to her?" Henry mouths in your direction, looking over your soggy appearance in confused surprise.

"I understand… and thank you for looking in on him"
Her thoughts kept on going in circles. This was all very suspicious, but maybe she was reading too much into it? And what could she possibly do about it, anyways, when she was bedridden at hospital?
She waited to see if she would say anything else before hanging up the call, but in the meantime, she was already thinking about her calling someone to drop by her apartment and check up on David. Someone she could trust. She couldn't take any chances

Persephone sighs heavily when she realizes what is happening. She was terrible to Circe, Henry shows up to find a crying girl, and he does the good thing and comforts her. The only villain in this scenario, Persephone knows, is her.
She walks in and says, "It’s my fault. I tried to explain to her about the demonic contract, but she didn’t believe me. So I was going to show her my demon form, but my patron is angry at me right now and has revoked it. So I just stood there like an idiot. I stormed out, just… SO angry at it all. I didn’t even get to the part about telling her what happened this weekend!!"
She looks at Circe and says, "I’m sorry I upset you. But I’m not lying. Henry saw it. But… let’s just forget about it right now; I just don’t want you to be upset, ok?"

"Are you supporting her in this delusion?" Circe demands of Henry, such support apparently not having been forthcoming so far. "You only just met her!?"
"Well, technically this is our third date..." Henry says defensibly, him being a number-guy and that particular number having significance to guys in this context. "Not that I am expecting your sister to put out or anything..." He adds hastily, defending your honour on the off-chance Circe missed the events of last night.
Henry seems more than a little uncomfortable being in the middle of this family drama. He also has not committed his opinion on what 'he saw', he is not sure what he saw, and a small part of him is holding onto that last vestige of his old sanity.
"When Emma told me about all this... It is hard to take in." He says.
"Emma?" Circe demands. "You are not going to try tell me her books are real!?"

Benji makes a detour past the Huntress fountain to wash the blood off his face and hands. "I don’t know why everyone is so surprised by that… Even Stoker’s Dracula slept! Anyway, yes, we do sleep. In coffins, during the day, famously—" He crosses his arms over his chest in the classic ‘vampire sleeping’ pose. "-although I’ve never actually had a coffin, personally… I’ve been mostly sleeping in a cupboard lately." He shakes his head, realising he’s getting off track. "Anyway, I’ve been invited back down there to play my violin in a few days or so, so we’ll stage our rescue then. In the meantime… they have the captive humans locked in a cell with thick iron bars, too sturdy for even a vampire to break. I’ll need the two of you to figure out some way to get that cell open without making any noise. Maybe you have some tools you could use on the hinges? Or maybe you will have to go back to those wizards you spoke to and see if they can’t provide you with an unlocking spell or something of the kind?"

Persephone begins to protest, saying, "It's not a delusion, it's..." But she trails off as Henry proceeds to henry all over things. First, he says some weird things about Persephone "putting out" that make her uncomfortable; he sounds like a high school boy caught making out behind the bleachers, not an older, mature man. Second, he refuses to affirm Persephone's claim. It is the second issue that ruins things for her.
Persephone looks at him with disdain and shakes her head, hurt and annoyed. She replies, "You still won't support me in this? If you can't believe me after what you've seen and heard, then maybe you should leave. I don't want your pity; I don't want you to tolerate my crazy claims. I want you to believe me. And I certainly won't be 'putting out' for someone who thinks I've lost my mind. So what will it be, Henry?"
She then turns to Circe and says, "And Emma? Yes. Well, No. I mean, Yes, she knows. But, No, her first book was all made up. Then she got a chance to do some 'real' research and discovered that the supernatural is real. So now she is mixed up with very bad people and is acting self-destructively again. So we're taking a break."
She turns back to Henry and crosses her arms, awaiting his response.

Emma gasped when the call was disconnected. She set the phone down in her lap, breathing slowly as the tears continued to run down her cheeks. She has to get it together! She can't help David, or herself, crying in a hospital bed...
She considered calling back, but what good would it do? If she told David where she was he might decide to stumble out of bed in his condition, and from the way he sounded on the phone he could barely stand up on his own feet. He shouldn't drive like that. He would only end up getting hurt, and it's all going to be her fault!
She started gasping for air just thinking about it.
No, I can't. Don't think about it
Emma was very good compartmentalizing her thoughts from her emotion. But this time, she found it nearly impossible thinking of a way to help her husband, without all the paralyzing dread that came with it.
She tried to force herself to calm down, but when she called Kenedi, her voice was still weak, and trembling:
"Hi… do you have a few minutes?"

"I haven't watched that one." Ernie says, missing that it may have been a book before it was anything to 'watch'. "'In a cupboard'?" He says, puzzled by this whole exchange.
"The violin guy." Frank says to Ernie, again quietly enough that they assume you wouldn't hear. "I thought he looked familiar. He seems to know a lot about the prisoners." He whispers, this not increasing their trust in you.
When you suggest 'tools' Frank hold up a hacksaw, it will be hard going getting thought those cold, iron bars with that tool, but he also holds up a leather pouch, assuming you will recognise a lock-pick set.
"'A few days, or so'?" Ernie says, returning to the topic of waiting. "Like, when? Are we supposed to just wait?" He is impatient with this plan, but, if they really went and spoke to all those people —tracking down 'wizards', even— they have waited longer than that already.

"I am supporting you." Henry says in a 'reasonable man explaining to a hysterical woman' tone of voice, and completely missing the effects of his ill-advised 'attempt to connect with the younger generation' and taking Circe's miming vomiting as the appropriate reaction to his words.
"But you have to admit it is a lot to take in. And your stories are ... hmm... a little out there." He isn't saying out loud that 'what he has heard' is precisely that, things he has heard, what he saw —in that dark park path— is a lot less clear... enough to make him listen to Emma's and your words, but not enough to strip him of all doubts. Your versions mostly line up, but learning that you knew Emma and possibly came to the hotel together, leaves the lingering thought that you may have colluded and planned this together... for what reason he can not see. He does not express this last doubt out loud.
Your news that Emma is acting self-destructively worries him, as does the fact that you are 'taking a break' and don't have her back, and possibly have not been making sure she is alright.

"Not really!" Kenedi shouts, a bit too loud for the phone, then, taking the phone away from her face but not covering it nearly well enough: "Hold him down! Hold him!! But make sure he can still breath!" Clearly something is going on on her end.
"Sorry!" She comes back to you, her voice still amped up. "Is this important?"

Benji cocks his head at Frank and Ernie’s whispered exchange. "I spoke to them," he explains about the prisoners. "Their names are Tiwonge Okonkwo and Liliána Mooshian. I promised them I’d see what I could do to help them, and that’s why I’ve agreed to help you."
When Frank holds up the hacksaw, Benji makes a face like ‘definitely not that one’. The lock-picks are more promising.
"Perhaps you could use the time to practice with the lockpicks," Benji suggests, patiently. "It will be important that you can get the cell door open quickly and quietly. Here, I’ll give you my phone number and you can call me or come find me at Piccadilly in a couple of days. Time is obviously of the essence for Tiwonge and Liliána, but I’m afraid I am simply not up to the task right now. I haven’t slept in… I’m not sure how long, and I have friends I need to call to let them know I’m not dead. Well… not more dead than I already was, anyway."

Persephone realizes at that moment that Henry will be neither the stalwart supporter nor fellow conspirator she was hoping for; indeed, he's being particularly oafish tonight, and betraying his significantly higher interest in Emma's well-being over hers. Again. And now Persephone has alienated Circe and made her conclude that her older sister has had some kind of psychotic break, may be a drug addict, or possibly a sex worker. Or maybe just a slut. And Emma? Well, Emma's not an option right now.
Persephone feels very alone and very defeated. She looks up at Henry and Circe. She sees their mouths moving, but can't hear them. The walls of her condo feel like they are closing in on her. She feels like someone is sitting on her chest and her breathing becomes rapid and shallow. She begins to shake, her hands visibly quavering and her teeth starting to chatter. She feels her shoulder and neck tense up tightly. She can't see, really--or she can't seem to focus on anything, at least. She has to get out of there!
In the grips of a full-blown PTSD -fueled panic attack, Persephone looks up at Henry and Circe, her eyes wide and desperate, filling with tears that splash down her cheeks, her lips quivering, her voice stammering. "I... I have to... I have to go..."
And she turns and runs! Adrenaline and cortisol pump through her body and she feels like she could smash right through the door. Instead, though, she slams it open with a bang and bolts down the hall to the elevator. She pushes the button 20, maybe 30 times, but it won't come! It's taking forever!!!
She breaks. She collapses, dropping to her knees, wrapping her arms around herself, as her body is wracked with sobs. Deep, visceral sobs punctuated with a guttural moaning cry, as if her very soul was howling in pain.
Just then, the elevator dings, about to open. Circe runs out the door and sees her sister lying on the ground shuddering. Circe runs to her, calling her name, but Persephone is unresponsive. She seems to be replaying something, seeing some trauma, rather than the present. Circe shakes her, but Persephone only sobs, cries out in pain, and shudders, her body literally wracked with muscle spasms, as if she were being struck -- or stabbed. Circe is terrified. Henry stands behind Circe, absolutely uselessly looking on, uncertain of what to do.

"Only two?" Ernie says when you name the prisoners. He sounds disappointed by the number, but you can't tell if that if because he is missing someone specific or if he is reevaluating risking two (or is it three) lives to try save two.
"I watched a youtube tutorial!" Frank says indignantly when you impugn his capabilities with the lock-picks. But maybe they will take your advice and practice to pass the time.
The exchange numbers with you and promise to come find you tomorrow.

Benji’s strength has been bolstered by Frank and Ernie (and Leopold)’s blood, but he is still positively exhausted and very glad to be on his way home. Upon reaching his flat, he pauses outside the door and knocks, in case Lizabeth is in.

There is no answer from inside, though that could just mean she is sleeping. However, when you enter you find that —most of— her stuff has been moved out. You have been gone for days, so maybe she took Miriam up on her offer, or maybe she just went home —she never took the threat seriously, anyway. On the other hand, many scary people were interested in her and her find, so maybe her leaving was not that congenial?
Your phone is flat —after a weekend or more of searching for signal with no charging. If you decide to charge and check it before you rest, you may get a flurry of messages.
• Do you let anyone know that you are back in the land of the living... so to speak?

"it's fine" she said in a voice that sounded anything but "I'll call you later..."
She didn't expect Kenedi to skip work just to bring her a spare change of clothes. And it wasn't like she was leaving the hospital soon anyhow, so she might as well wait until Kenedi was off work to talk with her.
Sighing to herself, she tried to keep her mind busy. First by reporting her credit cards stolen. Only then, did she flip the curious card she was handed to see if there was any clue she could find on its back. She intended to go through 'her' contact list to search for a healer, but maybe she should give this Titanias a call first...
She quickly dialed the number, waiting to see who will pick up before saying anything.

Benji is slightly sad but not surprised to find that Hermes and most of Lizabeth’s things are gone. It had been nice to have company for a little while. He still has Snowy, of course, sulking in his cage, and the rats… The rats! He told them to meet him at his flat and he’s very anxious to make sure they’re okay. "Hello?" he calls out as he steps into his flat and closes the door behind himself. "Tchaikovsky? Brahms? Paganini?"

While inadvertently looking at your notifications while handling your phone, you do see a couple of missed calls from your boss, as well as a message asking where you are and asking what you are working on. ('Asking' may be a polite way of saying it.)
Surprisingly, even at this late hour, Titanias answer the phone. "Hello, Daaarling!" A ... woman? ... greets in an accent you can't quite place, but it gives you feelings of warm continental climes. "You look fabulous!" (Though how they could know that is a mystery...)
"How can we help you?" They gush.

You have been gone for days, and have felt the acute effects of starving, but that damn raven still has not eaten anything! It looks none the worse for wear, though.
At your call, your three companions come piling out of a hole in the skirting-board where they were hiding. Paganini has a large streak of bald skin exposed on its back, and did Tchaikovsky always only have three fingers on one 'hand'? But they are alive. They swam up your trouser leg, eager to greet you with whiskered kisses.

A woman.answered her call before she had the chance to start worrying about the call from her boss. She wasn't as surprised to hear the voice of a woman, as she was by the compliment about her looks.
she quickly glanced at her phone to check if her camera was on.
No. It wasn't.
"…Uh." She hesitated. "I found your card. And… I might need your help."

"Of course, Daarling." She replies. "Can I have your name?" It is quite common for this sort of place to have exclusive membership lists, so her asking for your name before asking what sort of help you need might not be all that unusual.
In the meantime the bank have replied and confirmed your cards are now canceled and you will need to collect new ones, which needs your ID, which was in your purse. At least there have been no charges or attempts to use them in the interim.

In the meantime the bank have replied and confirmed your cards are now canceled and you will need to collect new ones, which needs your ID, which was in your purse. At least there have been no charges or attempts to use them in the interim.

Circe and Henry look at each other, uncertain of what to do. Henry ineffectually tries to pat Persephone on the arm, saying, "Um, there there, it'll be ok...?" Meanwhile, Circe runs back to the condo and returns with her phone, angrily yelling, "What the hell, Henry! You guys don't have 911 here?!" Henry educates her and they call 999 for emergency services. Throughout, Persephone rocks on the ground, knees to chest, sobbing and shaking. A neighbor or two look out to see what's going on, and Henry lets them know that emergency services have been called, someone is having a nervous breakdown. Some neighbors grant them their privacy; others simply stare.
By the time the emergency services arrive, Persephone seems to have exhausted herself, and she is groggy and somewhat unresponsive. They load her on a gurney and wheel her away. Circe demands to come with them, but the medics direct her to wait at the hospital. Henry does the chivalrous thing and accompanies her.
Persephone finally comes to in a hospital bed. Her whole body hurts, like she's been in a car crash. She is exhausted, feeling hollowed out. And her nerves are frayed; a nurse enters and Persephone yelps and jumps in surprise. She shivers with the chills for a short time afterwards, as her nerves slowly calm themselves. The nurse injects something into an IV and Persephone lapses into sleep.
Her drug-addled dreams are filled with Choudry's rising and falling hand holding the dagger, the demon she met in the tunnels, her patron, Viv, Chablis, Emma... a collage of all that has happened, filled with blood and fire, smoke and pain. But something else is there... a warm light...
She awakens, finally. Daylight streams in. Circe is asleep in a chair across the small room. Henry is not here, having had to leave for work. It is late morning the next day -- she had been asleep for 16 hours. Persephone pulls herself up to sitting and tries to rub her eyes, only to discover her wrists are strapped down to the sides of the bed.
What the...what is going on?
She shakes her head and it all gradually comes back to her. She looks to Circe as her eyes well up with tears. "Circe? Circ? I'm scared..."

"Emma Harper" she hesitated only for a second before giving her full name. She was still trying to figure out who exactly she was speaking to. A normal business wouldn't answer the phone like that. Or in these hours of the night...
"I… was injured recently, and I’m looking for someone who can make sure there’s no scarring left."
Her brow furrowed slightly as she glanced at the card again. "You are specialists in cosmetic surgery, right?"

Benji is overjoyed to see that the rats are alive and well(ish). He gets them each a biscuit from the kitchen cupboard, plugs his phone in to charge, and disappears into the bathroom to clean up and change into a fresh set of clothes.
When he comes back, he sees that his phone has charged and that he has a handful of text messages and missed calls. He needs to let Emma know that he got out okay (and to tell her the terrible news about Persephone!) but first he calls Lizabeth to make sure she has not been kidnapped.

Circe wakes up groggily. It takes her a moment to work out where she is as well. It does not look like she got a lot of sleep.
"It's going to be OK." She says, first patting you arm and then steeling herself and taking your hand below where it is bound. "You're safe. No one is going to hurt you. You are in the hospital." She explains, her reassurances hinting about why you are strapped down and maybe also about the sorts of things you have been saying, in your sleep or to the doctors.
• Would Circe have called your parents? Are they the sort to cope with this sort of thing? Are they the sort to be arranging flights as we speak?

There is the briefest of pauses, just barely long enough for someone to look up a name, then: "Ah, Emma. Yes, most assuredly. We can sort that out for you, no trouble at all. We can work miracles..."
There is another pause, long enough to run a credit report. "And how will you be paying?" She asks, still as polite and not sounding like she plans to reject you.

"But you haven't even inspected me yet. And I didn't tell you where I was injured...". She was beyond suspicious right now. This was playing out like some kind of con, and she wasn't surprised when they already asked for her credit card number. The only reason she didn't hang up was the mention of a 'miracle'.
She desperately needed one.
"Don't you need to tell me how much it's going to cost me first?"

Benji apologises profusely to Lizabeth for worrying her. "I got lost in the tunnels underground," he explains. "I was wandering around for days and then I ran into Alasdair and his friends and I thought they would help me but they locked me in a cell! He did let me go eventually though… I would have called you sooner but my telephone wasn’t working and then the battery ran out. I only just got home."

"Let me guess. Vampire bite? On the inner thigh? Or neck? Unsightly marks? Don't worry, we can fix you fight up, lickety-split." How do they know that? At least they don't seem to know the specifics like the location of the bite... and it is also good news that you won't need to lie about what happened. This is all sounds too good to be true.
"And don't worry. We won't take an arm and a leg... too soon?" She finishes, possibly wishing she could retract her joke.

"You? Got lost in the underground?" Lizabeth says, sounding skeptical. "Who the f is Alasdair?" She is not up with all the old-school vampires, which is a good thing, she stays out of the dark places, preferring to keep the open sky above her head, and probably doesn't really care who he is, she just needs to vent her irritation with you.

That wasn't a guess. The woman knew exactly why she called her. The fact that she was right both unsettled and relieved her ; it meant she might actually be able to help her.
"I… I have to get it fixed," she couldn't keep the desperation from her voice "My body... it's why people like me" A single tear rolled down her cheek "its the only reason anyone likes me"
She took a moment to compose herself, taking a deep breath to steady her voice

"Ah, isn't it always thus." She says sadly. "But I am sure you have more value than that. And money isn't everything. When you are back on your feet, why don't you pay us a visit." The address is on the card, and it is nearby, on the river.

"Oh, right, yes, sorry — you don’t know Alasdair. He’s just another vampire — one of the ones that live underground, in the storm sewers," Benji explains, not picking up on the fact that Lizabeth definitely doesn’t care. (Why would she ask if she didn’t care?). He goes on to tell her all about what happened at the park and underground with the demons, stopping his story shortly before the encounter with Alasdair, which he has already told her about in brief and which he certainly does not want to go into detail about. "Anyway, I’m glad you’re alright! And I’m glad you had Joe around to help you while I was gone. He’s really nice. I think he likes you."

Emma sank back into the pillow once she ended the call. She wanted nothing more than pay a visit to Titanias right now, that very moment. But the doctor said she should rest, and .... she didn't have any clothes.
She was stuck here in hospital, for god knows how much longer, and every second in bed only made her more and more frustrated with the situation.
Maybe she should get some rest. She wasn't feeling like herself. She lost so much blood, that it would take a while until she could think straight again.
But what about her husband?
She only planned to be gone for a couple of hours, not leave him sick and bedridden all by himself. And now he must be worried sick about her, on top of everything.
She had to do something.
She hated that she had to think twice about doing what she should have done hours ago. Picking up the phone, and breathing in deeply, she called her mother-in-law
She and the elder Mrs. Harper were very different people, and didn't always get along. But they had one thing in common; their love and devotion to David.
Her husband would be safe with her. And unlike anyone else, she wouldn't hesitate nor feel burdened taking care of him.

Trigger warning: SA and self-harm
With a frightened look on her face, Persephone asks, "Circ! What is happening? Why am I...this?" She tugs at her wrist cuffs and also discovers she is wearing ankle cuffs as well.
Circe looks exhausted, both physically and emotionally. She stands, slowly, and makes her way to Persephone's side, taking one of her restrained hands. With a deep sadness, she says, "Pers, I told them you were suffering from, like, major delusions. And when they examined you, they..." She choked back tears and struggles to continue. She closes her eyes and breathes, composing herself enough to continue. She says, "They saw the scars. They're...all over your body. I ... I didn't know!"
Circe looks down at Persephone's body. Her eyes trace the nearly invisible lines that criss-cross Persephone's whole body -- lines that Persephone herself had not yet noticed. She'd had literally zero time alone with herself since 'coming back,' and had focused on the wound she remembered -- the knife. Apparently, the hell hound had torn her body apart afterwards, so now she has a fine web of scarring across her entire body. A medical professional could easily interpret them as years of careful razor cuts, long healed.
Circe shakes her head in disbelief and then back at Persephone's face. Deeply hurt, she says, "The doctor said based on how well they'd healed, that you have a long history of cutting, going back years. And because you have that kind of history, and you've had a break from reality with major delusions, they said you are a danger to yourself. So..." She trails off, clearly at a loss. She is devastated that her older sister might have had such a long history of self-harm. She knew Persephone had some mental health struggles in the past, but Circe never had any clue of anything of this degree of seriousness.
Circe gets a very serious look on her face and looks Persephone in the eyes. She says, "After they sedated you, you ...said things. You said you were a demon again, that you had already died. You said you were afraid you'd hurt that girl you're dating, Viv. Persephone, I'm... I'm worried and I don't know what to do. I haven't call mom and dad yet, because you know how well they'd handle this, but... I don't know what else to do..."
Still recovering from the sedative they administered, Persephone tries to understand everything that is happening and formulate a reply to her little sister, but the words don't come. Her eyes begins to well with tears again, and they sting when they do so--she'd already cried too much today. Or was it tomorrow? She wasn't even sure. She looks away from Circe in abject shame.

"What!? No! Don't be silly." Lizabeth exclaims, suppressing a giggle. "He's like a spy. He is just doing his job watching me." She sounds more than a little titillated by the idea, and it does not sound like this is the first time she has thought about her and Joe.
If you told her about Frank and Ernie and the planned rescue attempt, she will be very pleased, but that came after the Alasdair debacle, and it also might not be a good idea to bandy about that idea too much.

Evelyn will, of course, head straight through to look after her baby boy, but she is not easily swayed away from questions, lots of questions: What is happening, why are you in hospital (do you need anything), are you going to be OK, how are things going with David... and progressively more personal... your phone is getting warm and the battery is creeping down.
The Harper-in-laws are, of course, not in London, so this does not help you tonight, poor Mrs Spunklecleif may have to 'watch her shows' at your place? (... not that you have a TV? Who does anymore... old people, that's who.:)

Kenedi came through and brought her a fresh set of clothes, and a spare key to her apartment. What she didn't bring, because Emma never though to ask, was an umbrella.
She rode a taxi back home, but the short walk from the curb to the Lobby left her soaked to the bone. Pushing the door open with her hip, she dragged herself inside
"Hi..." She whispered feebly. Charles was at the small dining table, halfway through breakfast, while Evelyn busied herself with the kettle. A suitcase rested near the couch, likely theirs. She hadn’t discussed sleeping arrangements with them, but it was clear they must have driven straight here in the morning without checking into a hotel.
"How's David?"
She limped to the couch and slumped in, brushing her fingers through her soggy hair. She was relieve to see her in-laws, and she felt some of the pressure of her last couple of days already lifting off her shoulders.

Dr Johansen has left instructions for how to move, what not to do (basically anything), and how and when to apply which creams and ointments. The hospital is not pleased at your leaving so soon and without actually talking to your surgeon, but they can not stop you.
Walking is very difficult, every movement stretches the inside of your thigh and reminds you that they say this will increase scarring. They couldn't supply you with a wheelchair, not that you could get one into your flat, and the crutches are uncomfortable and don't seem to help, anyway. It is slow going. The taxi driver is more than willing to help you from his door to yours.
"He is worried about you." Evelyn says, she is treating you a lot more icily than last night. Maybe she has been speaking to Mrs Spunkleclief?
They all want to see the injury, but the intimate location sends your father-in-law packing. Your 'snake bite' story smells fishy, but no one calls you on it.

It was one of the rare few occasions where Emma actually felt (a tiny bit) guilty. It didn't matter that she never intended to abandon her husband. It didn't matter that (this time) she never intended to get herself in trouble. The end result was what matters. She wasn't there to support her husband. He was left, sick and with high fever, without anyone there to take care of him.
She failed her duties as a wife, and she couldn't fault Evelyn to be angry with her.
Then again... She was clearly in pain, could barely walk, and was just hospitalised for at least a day. Her mother in law could show some sympathy towards her situation too. They were still family...
"I have to talk with him"
She wanted nothing else then to tell him she was alright, so he could properly rest without worrying about her.
"Can you please help me to the.bedroon? The doctor said I should keep the weight off my leg for a few days. Until my injury properly heals..."

Persephone looks away, eyes closed, and weeps quietly.
Circe had cried until crying ran out already, so she just turns and walks back to her chair and collapses into it. She shakes her head and sighs and picks up her phone. An idea occurs to her and she opens it and looks at her sent messages and outbound calls from the past few days. She realizes that she had let Persephone use her phone when she first saw her--when Pers claimed that she had lost hers. There are several calls and messages to Emma, as well as to another number she doesn't recognize.
"I don't care if they are 'taking a break.' This is too important," Circe mutters to herself, and sends a text to Emma.
Emma, this is Circe, Persephone's sister. Persephone is in the hospital after a mental breakdown. She has been self-harming, for years apparently. She is delusional. They had to restrain her. Emma, she needs help. I need help. Please, I don't know who else to turn to.
She wants to throw the phone, but she sighs and looks at the other number. Almost angrily, she sends a message to it as well, saying, Who is this, and how do you know Persephone? She's in the hospital.

After he finishes talking to Lizabeth, Benji looks over his missed calls and messages to see who else he needs to call. There are, of course, a flurry of texts and calls from Emma a few days ago, but also a few from a number he doesn’t recognise, including one very recently:
Who is this, and how do you know Persephone? She's in the hospital.
Persephone! She’s alive!? And in hospital, apparently, which is obviously no good, but that’s a whole lot better than dead, at least! Confused and feeling terribly guilty for leaving Persephone behind in the tunnels when she was apparently still alive, Benji immediately calls the strange number.

Charles gives his wife an exasperated look, stands and offers you an arm for support, guiding you to the bedroom.
David is sitting up —which is an improvement— but he still looks pale. He brightens when he sees you, then his face falls when he sees you are hobbling and unable to walk, if he could he would have leaped out of bed and gotten you settled. As is, he shifts aside so you can sit and stretch out in whatever way is comfortable.
"What happened?" He asks, his voice laden with concern and lacking the judgement you seem to be getting from everyone else —or is it just from those who are old and female? "Is it very bad?"
What do you do?

Emma, who also lookee pale, brightens when she sees her husband finally able to sit up on his own. She carefully lowered herself next to him, leaning into him slowly.
She fell into his arms, closing her eyes and just breathing in the scent of him for a long moment. She didn't need anything else at that moment. All her adventurers were forgotten as she wrapped her arms tighter around his body. She only let go because she owed him an answer :
"I was stupid. I chased a lead… something I thought would be perfect for the book. And I ended up tangled up with some completely insane people. Like the ones I write about"
She breathed in slowly "I was bitten. Lost a lot of blood. I can’t even stand without someone holding me up. The doctors said I’ll be alright. In time". She lowers her eyes, unable to meet his gaze "I'm sorry. I really messed up. I was lucky to get away with just this; It could have been so much worse."

Charles closes the door behind himself as he gives you some privacy.
David makes appropriate comforting noises, letting you talk, holding you and stroking your (lank and lifeless) hair gently.
One thing is bothering him, enough that he needs to ask about it. "'Bitten'?" He says, not really knowing how to go further with this line of enquiry, but that word, combined with 'people, like the ones you write about', which, in his mind are 'vampires'... and more importantly fictional, has him quite worried.

"Yes...bitten" she wanted to tell him the truth, but she also knew how crazy it will sound. There was no way he was going to believe her. But she didn't want to outright lie to him either...
"There are… crazy people out there. People who think they’re vampires." Because they ARE vampires "And..." She turns her head away and grimaces as the recalls the sharp pain when Tara's teeth sank into her flesh "That's how I ended up in hospital". She spares him, and herself, the details of what exactly happens. Not like she could remember much of it anyways.
"I'll send you the hospital report" she pulls away only to reach for her phone "it can explain it better than I can"
She sends him the file, but when the screen return to her inbox she noticed the flood of all the missed messages. Friend. Her boss. And ...Circe?
The colour drains from her face as she reads her message. Her shoulders sag, and when she turns back to David, she let out a soft sigh
"I have to make a few calls. There are… a lot of people looking for me."
There was nowhere private she could retreat to now that her in laws where in the living room. Not like she could stand on her own to walk there anyhow.
Lifting her phone to her ear, and still leaning on her husband for supports, she taps Circe's contact and waited for the call to connect

Circe sits in a small upholstered chair across the room from Persephone's bed, drinking a styrofoam cup of disgusting hospital coffee, hoping to stave off the exhaustion the weighs on her. She looks across the room at her sister strapped down to the bed and now asleep again, having been drugged yet again. She flew into a fit when she awoke and Circe wouldn't free her, and it got bad enough that the nurses came in and administered a sedative. Apparently they have to wait until the hospital psychiatric nurse can come by on her rounds later that night before possibly getting Persephone committed to ...
Circe doesn't even want to finish the thought. How did it come to this? Oh Persephone...
Her phone buzzing interrupts her pitiful reverie. She picks it up and sees that an unknown number is calling, but it is one she recognizes, because she called it earlier today. She doesn't know who it is, but it is someone that Persephone called several times when she borrowed Circe's phone.
She answers and, in a voice that sounds equal parts exhausted and panicked, she says, "Hello? Who is this?" Even through the emotions dn fatigue, however, the voice is clear that of an American young woman, and Benji might even detect a similar intonation and accent to Persephone's.

Emma frowns when she gets the 'call waiting' signal. She hangs up, reluctantly ending the call with a small shake of her head. She would try against, soon, but in the meantime, she might as well give Mr. Thompson a call. Her boss was looking for her the day before, and she was already late getting back to him

Circe hears Benji’s friendly voice on the phone and replies. She sounds very upset, distraught even, and exhausted. She says, "This is her sister, Circe. I live with her. She never mentioned you. Listen, she’s… she’s not doing well. She’s had a breakdown. And, well… she’s suffering from some very disturbing delusions, things like that she’s a demon, and that she died and came back, and vampires, and all kinds of stuff. She’s sedated now, and I’ll be signing the paperwork later to have her committed, so she can get the treatment she needs and get her away from the people that have been encouraging this. Are you one of the people that that’s been feeding her this stuff??"
Aug 16, 2025 5:46 am
"Ah, Circe!" says Benji, finally recognising the voice from their brief encounter at Persrphone’s apartment. "I think we met briefly the other day— I came over for lunch with a few other friends— but I’m afraid I never got the chance to properly introduce myself." Upon hearing all about Persephone’s ‘delusions’, there is a long pause before he responds, "Ohhhh… that’s… no good. Vampires and demons, you say? Yes, that’s, um, very disturbing. She says she died and came back?" That would explain what happened in the tunnel. "…Would I be able to speak with her, do you think?"

"Ah, Emma." Your boss says when you call him. "We got your piece on The Lanesborough, you have to share your secrets on how you get into such places." He says, wishing he could pull it off. "But we need something juicy, market research says people are bored with 'rich people topics', and sales are down. I need you to get out there and find us a story that sells."

"I'm not really an investigative journalist, you know" she reminds him "I write about fashion. And nightclubs. And gossip, and relationships". She pursed her lips, since she already knows where this is going "I wouldn't know where to start on an actual 'juicy' story. The book I did write was all fiction...".

Circe relaxes a bit when Benji mentioned their having met. Oh I remember him... oh good, he was normal at least.
She replies, "Oh yes, I think I remember you. Um, well, no she can't talk; she's sedated right now. The psychiatrist already visited and reviewed her file and has decided to have her committed. The nurse should be in soon for me to sign the paperwork. So, talking to her is not possible... Um, I have your number, so once she's all... um... settled in the Ward, I'll find out what visiting hours are and we could visit her? I... I don't know for how long she'll be in there..." Circe's voice began to quaver and shake in increasing amounts as she spoke, as the gravity of her words struck her viscerally.

"Sure, that’s a great idea," Benji agrees, soothingly. The poor girl sounds absolutely distraught. "Persephone’s very lucky to have a sister who cares so much about her. Say… you wouldn’t be able to tell me which hospital you’re at, by any chance?" Maybe if he can get there fast enough, he can intervene before Persephone gets taken away…
Aug 16, 2025 10:22 pm
Circe breathes, trying to calm down a bit. Benji's steady behavior helps. She replies, "Um... I think it's called, like, the Royal London Hospital? Yeah, but probably not after today. I don't know where they'll put her...one of the orderlies was whispering that she belongs in somewhere called Bedlam or something?"
Aug 16, 2025 11:24 pm
"The Royal London," Benji repeats. "Alright, thank you, Circe. And if your sister wakes, could you please tell her I called?"
Aug 16, 2025 11:31 pm
Circe grabs a pen from atop the stack of forms sitting on the side table next to her and she quickly scribbles the name Benji in the margin of one. She says, "Um, yeah, I will, I promise. Um, thanks. I don’t know what… well, yeah. Un ok. Goodbye."
She frowns: she hates doing voice calls in the best of times, and she is overwhelmed at the moment. Unsure if what else to say, she hangs up.
She looks at her phone for a moment and then sees the missed call notification from Emma. Alarmed, she quickly dials Emma back.

"Them's the breaks, kid." Noah says. "We all gotta do what we gotta do. I'm counting on you to get out that and find something that will sell papers. I don't know what. You are always talking about 'doing research'... that's as close as I have to and 'investigative journalist', and I am desperate."
This timing is bad, but your job has always been like that, long periods of boredom when you have the time, but then unforeseen crunch and awkward deadlines when you really don't.

Emma pinched the bridge of her nose. She really didn't want more work related stress, on top of everything. But who knows? Maybe this will be her chance to breakout and become something more like a real journalist...
"Fine. I’ll… I’ll try to think of something" she was reluctant, but also resigned, knowing there is no point arguing with him "I'll let you know once I have something for you"
Once she ended the call,.she stared at the rain from out the bedroom window, before giving David a tight smile, and tying Circe again..

Circe had just gotten off the phone with Benji and was about to call Emma when Emma’s name popped up in her phone with an incoming call. "Oh! Pers, it’s Emma," she said, turning to her older sister, only to remember that Persephone was still heavily sedated and strapped down tight to the bed.
With a sigh, she turned away and walked over near the door to the room, and answered the phone. "Emma? Is that you? Oh thank god. Look I know you and Persephone are fighting right now, and normally I’d respect that and leave you alone? But... this is serious. Emma… it’s really bad. Persephone has had, like, a psychotic break or something. She thinks she’s a demon, and she fights vampires or something, like in your book! And Emma? She’s… she’s been self-harming. A lot, and for a long time. It’s awful… So now she’s sedated, and they had to strap her down to the bed? I’m having her committed to an asylum now, so she can get some really serious help. Ohmigod, it’s been a nightmare…"
Just then, Circe looked back at Persephone, only to find the bed empty!! The restraints were still intact, locked in place, but Persephone was just … gone!!
Circe gasped and cried out, "ohmigod she’s gone!! She was just here like, thirty seconds ago!!! She didn’t leave… and we’re on the ninth floor! Oh my god… is she… No she’s not under the bed!! Help, someone help!!! My sister is gone!!! Come help!"
Emma hears the sound of Circe dropping the phone and running off to get help.

As soon as he gets off the phone with Circe, Benji curses to himself. Fighting against his exhaustion, he grabs his umbrella and hurries out the door, headed for the Royal London Hospital.
Aug 18, 2025 4:52 am
"Circe, hi - listen, I -"
Circe was talking too fast, and Emma could barely get a word in. Not that it mattered; Circe was hardly listening to her
"Wait!! committed??!!? No, you can't- !!"
Emma straightened up, despite the pain. A psychotic break? Pers being Committed? Strapped down? She swallowed hard. Were her own words been the last straw? She said some pretty harsh things to her the last time they fought. Something about no one truly loving her. If she was the one to push her over the edge.....how could she ever live with herself?
"No, I didn’t want her to - " she started, only to gasp when she heard the phone smash against the floor
There was shouting, panicked cries. Her first instinct was grim, but then she thought better of it. This wasn't some suicide leap. This had the stink of something other. Demon tricks, magic, something. She had to believe it!

After a chaotic few moments, Circe picked up the phone and spoke. Her voice was small and stilted — she sounds as if she has frozen up. She said, "She’s gone. She… she disappeared. I swear she was right here, sedated and restrained. And then…"
Aug 18, 2025 5:02 am
"Circe, listen to me!" She was relieved when she finally picked up "The straps! Are they still tied?" She bit her lip "I'm on crutches. I can't come over. Just tell me what you see!"
Aug 18, 2025 5:17 am
Confused, Circe hesitates but does what she’s told. She walks over and looks at the cuffs that had been tightly affixed around Persephone’s wrists and ankles. "They’re… they’re still tied!! How is this possible? I saw them put those things on! I saw her struggle and strain against them! She wasn’t getting out of those things. I don’t understand…"
Aug 18, 2025 5:01 pm
Emma stayed silent for a long while. She wanted to tell Circe her sister was safe, give her something to hold on to, but she had no idea if it was true.
Maybe Persephone had slipped through the cuffs and managed to get away. Maybe she has been dragged back down to hell for breaking her contract.
What was the right thing to tell her sister? Confirm everything Pers told her, or let her keep her blinds on. Wouldn't it better for her not to know? Simpler. Safer...
"I don’t know what to make of this," she finally sighed into the phone "I just… I hope she’s alright, if she really vanished like that. That she’s not a danger to herself." or anyone else…
"I wish I could come over, but I physically can’t. I’m sorry."

Circe continues to mumble in disbelief. "But how…? She was literally right here! And I was blocking the only exit, other than, like, the window! It was like ten seconds! I don’t understand…Well.. hey wait a minute!! Why are you on crutches? Are you ok??! Oh mi god do you need help or anything?"
Aug 19, 2025 4:07 am
"I know, it doesn't make sense" she mumbled "You need to keep calm and hope she turns up. There's little else we can do right now..."
She was concerned as well, but like it was her nature, she knew how to bury her worries deep inside her. If she couldn't do anything about it, it was best to not invest any emotional energy in it...
"Don't worry about me. I'll be fine. Eventually. Just keep it together. I'll come see you as soon as I'm able"

Unconvinced, Circe says, "Well… Ok, hon… Let me know if you hear from Pers, ok? I gotta go look for her."
Aug 19, 2025 12:55 pm
"If I hear anything, you'll be the first to know" she promised, though she doubted Pers would ever call her "Just don’t do anything reckless. I'll call you later today, ok?"
Aug 19, 2025 1:37 pm
Circe is clearly back in ‘panicked find her sister’ mode so she just mutters, "nothing reckless, right. Ok bye…" and hangs up the phone.
By now, her yells for help have gotten attention and nurses are streaming in and immediately doubting Circe. She probably just slipped out when you turned your back… I’m sure she’s around here… We’ll alert security so she won’t get far… etc
After about five minutes of junior nurses looking around the floor and having no luck finding her, the head nurse comes in. She looks at the bed and asks, "She was here, and then gone? And you didn’t release her?
Circe affirms the nurse’s words.
The nurse scowls and says, "Young woman I don’t know what game you’re playing but we know it must have been you to release her! She could not have broken out of those restraints! And if she did somehow, they wouldn’t still be fastened like they are! There’s be signs of force! I’ll be sure to tell security that you must have released her."
The nurse and Circe begin to argue, Circe getting increasingly upset.

Emma sighed to herself. She was more worried about Circe now than Pers. If only she was well enough to be there with her at the hospital, but right now, she could barely take care of herself.
Her bedsheets were getting soggy from sitting on them, and her wet clothes were cold, and uncomfortable. She ran her hair through her damp hair again, then turned to her husband: "I'm sorry. You can sleep on my side of the bed if you want. But can you maybe help me out of these wet clothes? I shouldn't be standing on my own..."

Upon arriving at the hospital, Benji finds out Persephone’s ward and room number at the reception desk and takes the elevator up to the ninth floor. When he gets to Persephone’s room, he finds some sort of commotion unfolding. A young woman— Circe— is in the middle of a heated argument with a nurse. Persephone is nowhere to be seen.
He clears his throat to interrupt, just as the nurse begins threatening to talk to security. "Circe? Sorry to interrupt. It’s me, Benji — from the telephone. What happened? Where’s Persephone?"

Aug 20, 2025 2:56 am
Circe is distraught. Benji’s is the first friendly face she’s seen since Henry left many hours ago. She goes to Benji and hugs him, despite barely knowing him, and says, "Benji, they don’t believe me! I swear to God she was here one second and then she was gone the next, like a magic trick! I was standing at the door and she didn’t walk past me! And look, that window doesn’t open and we’re on the ninth floor! There’s nowhere else to go here! She was gone and the restraints were like untouched! I don’t understand and I know I sound crazy, but please, you have to believe me!"
Aug 20, 2025 4:21 am
Benji freezes, startled by the hug and the sudden closeness of Circe’s jugular. He leans back a little, to put a bit of distance between his fangs and Circe’s neck. He isn’t starving anymore, but he doesn’t like to take any chances. "Of course I believe you," he says. He leans to one side to look over her shoulder at the empty bed. The restraints are still fastened as if Persephone just evaporated into thin air. Some sort of demonic magic, perhaps?
Returning his attention to Circe, he frowns, conflicted. He would not normally take it upon himself to reveal the secrets of the supernatural world to an unaware mortal, but the poor girl is beside herself and he’s sure it would help her to know that neither she, nor Persephone, are actually losing their minds. Besides, given what Circe said over the phone, it sounds like Persephone wants her to know the truth...
"However she got out, I don’t think she’ll be coming back anytime soon, so there’s no use waiting around here," he says, slowly. "Maybe we should go for a walk, to get some fresh air and help us clear our heads a little, and then I can tell you what I know about Persephone’s situation. Yes?"
Returning his attention to Circe, he frowns, conflicted. "We're a pair, aren't we?" David says trying to smile at the situation. "I am not sure I can stand either." But he manages to get you out of your wet clothes without needing to resort to calling for his mother to help —which, I am sure, is a relief to everyone concerned.
He has been brooding over the implications of 'biting' and, when he sees the location of the wound, he can't but ask inanely: "But, are you ... alright? What did they do to you?" He sounds awfully like he does not want to know the answer.
• What do you tell your husband?
What do you do?

"They… bit me," she rubs her thigh uncomfortably, not looking him directly in the eyes "Like I said… they were crazy. Completely out of their minds."
Changing into the clean, dry clothes made her feel a little more at ease. Leaning over, she pressed a soft kiss to his forehead: "I'll be fine. Get some rest"
She straightened up again, trying to smile reassuringly at him "I’ve got an appointment with the cosmetic surgeon later today,. Do you think your father could take me? I don't think I should be going anywhere on my own. Or if I even can..."

Circe looks up at Benji and then, realizing she has invaded his space, takes a few steps back. She nods in understanding as he speaks, and then looks back once more at the bed. She returns her attention to him and says, "Yeah, OK, a walk might do me some good." The nurse protests, saying, "Wait a minute, we have a missing psych patient here! She's been committed! We can't let you just walk out of here! You might have helped the patient escape!" Circe grows angry and steps toward the nurse. She points at the scattered papers on the table nearby and shouts, "I hadn't signed the stupid commitment papers yet, OK? So no, I didn't help her 'escape'. She probably just walked out, ok‽ I'll take care of her." She pushes past the nurse into the hallway.
Assuming Benji follows, Circe whispers to him when he joins her, "I definitely did NOT let her walk out... I swear. Benji, what is going on? She is really sick and I'm scared."
Meanwhile, somewhere else...
Persephone awakens to find herself staring up at a ceiling composed of concrete tiles, with cold indirect light illuminating it. She looks around and finds herself in a small, austere space, with polished concrete floors and high walls that glow with cold light. More significant, however, are the endless patterns of complex runes and sigils painted carefully on every square inch of wall; the paint is most likely blood. There is a single large black executive desk nearby, with a high-backed executive chair behind it, but the back is turned to her. She looks down and sees herself in a hospital gown, with red marks on her wrists and ankles, as if she had been struggling against restraints. Her head is foggy, as of she had been drugged, but she also feels as if she has been jolted awake somehow, possibly by the administration of a strong stimulant. She sits up, shivering, as the room can't be more than 50 degrees F (10 C).
The chair turns and Wentworth sits there, hands tented. He speaks, his voice recognizably his, but somehow deeper, more... feral? No, more dangerous; rather than drip with contempt, his every word is a threat. "Miss Zhang. Good. Our time is limited, so I shall be brief. Do pay attention. I have had you removed from your captivity at the behest of our patron, so that you might continue to serve Them. From now on, however, I shall be assigning you additional tasks, ones that might seem to ... undermine our Patron's goals. I had considered giving you these assignments as if from our Patron, but you are too clever and would have discerned the truth eventually. So instead, I shall make you complicit and force your cooperation. You shall be assisting me in, shall we say, going Independent. I have tired of serving our Patron and have made other arrangements, which I have taken great pains to hide. And now you are implicated in them as well, so our Patron shall believe you have been involved from the start of your time with us, and you shall suffer eternal torment alongside me, should my plan be discovered. All of which is to say, do not attempt to inform our Patron or fail in the tasks I give you, or... well. We need not dwell on the consequences. Take this phone and await my orders." He slides an old Nokia phone across his desk. It is black with byzantine carvings of sigils and runes all over it, with the faintest hint of blood in the bottoms of each deep groove.
He stands and says, "I can only stretch your millisecond of teleportation time so long--so I shall send you now to your condo, where our Patron expects you to appear. For They are Always Watching, my dear. You shall find that all records of your hospitalization and impending psychiatric commitment have been expunged, the nurses and doctors involved reassigned, and your neighbor, a witness to your collapse, given a story about an allergic reaction. Now, begone and await my orders, or suffer."
Suddenly, Wentworth's strange Nokia phone is in her hand. She looks back up and, for a moment, Wentworth's image flickers, revealing something...else. And suddenly she is wrenched out of this strange pocket of space and thrown back into the stream of things, only to find herself once again lying on a minimalist sofa and looking up at tasteful, indirect lighting -- but this time in her condo.
She sits up and vomits as her stomach churns from the experience.

"A crazy person bit you..." David says slowly. "But you are going to continue doing this research?" He does not say it out loud, but he is possibly thinking 'research for a fiction book' is not worth the risks. He is worried, but does not know how to address these concerns. The overheard conversation about Persephone 'being committed' dashes any thoughts he was having about approaching your friends for help with your irrational behaviour. He does not know what to do, and feels powerless.
"I am sure they would be glad to take you." David accepts the change of subject when you ask for help with your 'appointment', he did not witness the frostiness from your mother-in-law, and missed that you specified his father. He is probably correct, though, Charles is patterned much the same as his son, equally generous and caring.

"No, I'm not saying that" she lowers her gaze "Maybe… maybe it would be best if I just focused on my column instead of my book. It would be safer."
Her tone was flat as she said it. She didn't really want to give up her 'research', but this was too close a call to her liking to. Still, she couldn't keep how much it pained her from her voice

Benji hesitates, trying to decide how best to approach this…
"Circe, there’s something I have to tell you and you may find it difficult to believe but, if you will only humour me and listen, I can prove I’m not making it up," he says, carefully, as they step into the elevator. "Your sister isn’t going mad and nor are you. She really did disappear from that hospital room — like magic, just as you said yourself— because she really did make a pact with a demon. She wasn’t lying or mad— she was trying to tell you the truth."

The elevator doors close as Benji speaks. She turns to look at him, anger exploding across her face. "It was YOU! You're the one who put this in her head! You did this to her! How DARE you!" She feebly swings at Benji with wild fists and yells, "Leave my sister alone! AHHHH!!!" After a few more swings and another few screams, she collapses into him, sobbing.

"Really? That's grand!" David exclaims, possibly sounding more enthusiastic about your giving up that part of your life than he realizes, and not meaning to be hurtful. He knows that your book was important to you, and also knows that you two probably can't come out on what you make without the book sales (and the next one will be big...), but you can see hints of how uncomfortable that research may have made him.

"Yes." Her voice lacked the same enthusiasm as his. She was giving up on her passion, and she couldn't even pretend to be bright and cheerful about it. She sighed softly to herself, then looked at him again:
"Can you help me up? I’d like to go back to the living room so you can get some proper rest"

Benji doesn’t flinch as Circe batters him with her fists but is alarmed when she collapses into tears. "Oh, goodness! I’m sorry. Please don’t cry! Oh, I’ve really messed this up, haven’t I? Will you let me try again? Let me show you some evidence first, and then I’ll explain everything after. Okay?"

David can see that you are not well pleased, but your energy has been low since you came home. He stands unsteadily and gallantly helps you to the living room.
"What are you doing out of bed!?" Evelyn exclaims, clearly not impressed with you. She hustles her son back to the bedroom as soon as you are off his arm.

Emma slowly lowered herself into the couch, settling right next to her crutches. She waited until Evelynn was back in the room, offering her mother in law a faint, tired smile:
"I’ve got an appointment at cosmetic surgery in a couple of hours. Would you be able to keep an eye on David while I’m gone?" she didn't ask if one of them could take her there though, leaving it for them to offer if they were so inclined. She didn't want to be more a burden than she already was

Circe’s sobs subside and she looks up at Benji. She steps back from him, embarrassed, and says, "No, you didn’t do anything… I mean, this has all been a lot, and I’m really worried about my sister. Wait, what do you mean, evidence?"
Aug 21, 2025 6:54 am
"Of course," says Benji, sympathetically. "I know this must all be very overwhelming and strange, but I think it is necessary that you know the truth, both for your own sake and Persephone’s. So—" He pulls up his sleeve and offers her his cold, undead wrist. "Do you know how to check a pulse?"
Aug 21, 2025 7:08 am
Circe looks down at his arm and then up at Benji skeptically. She says, "Yeah? Ugh fine."
She takes his arm in her hands, holding it with one hand while her other hand glides down toward his wrist, settling two fingers onto the inside of his wrist where a pulse might be.
She furrows her brows, confused, and tries again. She mutters, "dammit…" and tries a third time.
She looks up at Benji, her eyes big with surprise, and she gets a stubborn look. She jabs her fingers up into the side of his neck, probing for the carotid artery, the surest way to feel a pulse.
She probes and searches and, finally, her mouth drops open and she looks up at him again, then steps quickly back, whispering, "What are you?‽!"
Just then the elevator doors open. Ding!

"Dead!" he says, cheerfully, as they step out of the elevator. "A vampire, to be more specific."
He doesn’t much care about being overheard. Most of the doctors and nurses that pass them in the hall are too busy to be listening in and, even if they did, the human mind is remarkably adept at ignoring things that ‘don’t make sense’.

Circe laughs, but almost immediately her laugh dies away and she says, "wait, you’re serious." she shakes her head in disbelief. She crosses her arms and arches a skeptical eyebrow, saying, "Ok I see, so Pers is a demon, and Emma, let me guess… She’s a werewolf. And there’s another guy who’s an angel, and he’s clueless and wears a trenchcoat all the time, and you all drive around in an old muscle car hunting ghosts. Is that it?"
Aug 21, 2025 1:37 pm
Benji frowns, bewildered by all this nonsense about angels and muscle cars. "…I don’t understand that reference."
He opens his umbrella as they leave the hospital and step out into the rain, holding the umbrella over Circe’s head to protect her too. "Clearly I’ve yet to convince you. I don’t suppose my teeth will do the trick?" He smiles at her so that she can see his fangs. "No? Okay, hmm… Oh! How about this?"
There is a ‘no parking’ sign near the front of the hospital, on a sturdy metal pole. Passing the umbrella to Circe, he steps up to the pole, and grabbing it in the middle, bends it to a 45 degree angle as easily as if he had been bending a piece of wire. He quickly rights it again (or tries to—it ends up a bit wonky) and looks back to Circe expectantly to see her reaction.

"That's quick." Evelyn says snootily. "Of course we will watch over him. That is why we can came down, after all." She is not leaving her baby while he needs care, maybe trying to make a point about how it is done.
Charles does not voice an opinion, but he may not have been listening, preferring to stay out of inter-generational cat-fights, and possibly not having been listening.

"Hey." A security guard says. "Did you see which car that just hit this pole?" He knows it was not bent the last time he passed, so a car must have hit it less than a minute ago... it must have been a car, how else would it be bent like that.

"I know, and we really appreciate it". She gave Evelynn a small smile, apparently oblivious, maybe deliberately, to any sharpness in her mother-in-law’s voice.
Since none of them offers her a ride, she pulled out her phone and arranged a taxi to pick her up and take her to Titanias. The , she set the phone back and turned back towards them: "Where are you two staying? We’ve got the foldout couch here if you’d like to stay with us a couple of days, at least until David is feeling a bit better."

Circe’s mouth drops open and her brows raise in shock at the sight of Benji bending the sign around. As the security officer approaches and asks about a car hitting it, she steps over and touches the sign. Then she tries to move it, discovering that it is quite solid—this is a real steel pole, not a trick.
She shakes her head and sits down on the curb and says, "I… I don’t understand. You’re telling me that my sister is a demon and YOU are a vampire? But wait how are you out in the sun?"

Aug 21, 2025 9:42 pm
"It’s difficult to spontaneously combust in this weather, but it does sting," Benji explains, of the sun, ducking back under the umbrella as he sits down on the curb beside her. "I know it’s a lot to take in. I’m sorry I had to foist this all upon you when you were already so upset."
Aug 21, 2025 11:46 pm
Circe shakes her head again, still stunned. She says, "So does this mean…? Oh no. Oh. Benji. If Persephone was telling the truth, and I was gonna have her committed… ohmigod… I guess that means I’m a monster too." She sighs heavily. Then something occurs to her and she says, "wait, the doctor said she had faint scars all over her body, suggesting she’d been self-harming for a long time, because there’s no way she could heal from such extensive wounds quickly. Is that, like, a demon thing?"
Aug 22, 2025 12:03 am
"No! You were only doing what you thought was best for Persephone," Benji tries to reassure her. "You’re not a monster, you’re just a good sister."
He shakes his head, puzzled, in answer to her question about Persephone’s scars. "I’m… not sure. I confess I’m no expert on demons. She didn’t have any visible scars last I saw her a few days ago—at least, not that I noticed—so I presume she must have acquired them sometime between then and now. Perhaps when she died? I was with her when it happened, but I was hurt myself and I never saw how it happened."

Aug 22, 2025 12:11 am
Circe starts coughing. She turns to Benji, a look of utter shock in her face. She speaks, distraught and confused, saying, "What?!! When she …. When she died?‽!"
OOC:
Circe hasn’t heard about any of this yet!Aug 22, 2025 12:30 am
Oh dear, I’ve upset her again! "Well… I think she died, at least. You said that’s what she told you when we spoke on the telephone earlier, right? I didn’t actually see it, but… well, there was a lot of blood. When I heard from you, I was frankly more surprised that she was alive than that she was in hospital."
Aug 22, 2025 3:10 am
Circe just stares at Benji, blinking, as her tired brain struggles to process all of it. She stammers, half to herself as she thinks through it all, saying, "She had said something about dying, but, you know, how could I have taken that seriously? And when she was drugged, she talked about being stabbed and healing and going away and coming back and meeting the the Dude from Big Lebowski and all kinds of things that sounded like being insane, or drugged, or both. So... does this mean... that the scars are from this 'dying' or whatever?"
She shakes her head, curses under her breath, and stands. She looks at Benji with fierce determination spreading across her face. She speaks, her voice firm, saying, "That's it. I simply have to speak to her and hear all this from her. She is my sister, and she has never lied to me, not about important stuff, and she tried to explain all this. So I have to find her. We need to find her. Will you help me?"

Persephone steps out of the shower, her bathroom filled from floor to ceiling with steamy, swirling mist. She towels off, dresses in an easy, comfortable, but fashionable outfit, and heads to the kitchen to make a pot of coffee. After she had appeared back in her apartment, she had vomited, so she first cleaned that up, before taking what seemed like an hours-long, scalding hot shower. Once again, her demon-tainted physiology helps her to recover impossibly quickly, and the sedation, as well as the fatigue and stress of the previous few days, feels entirely gone.
She leans on her kitchen counter, sipping her hot coffee, wondering what to do next. She looks down at the rune-carved Nokia that Wentworth had given her and slides it into her purse. She shrugs and thinks, Well, I guess I should just keep serving my Patron until Wentworth contacts me? All he did was threaten; he never even bothered with a carrot. I guess I'd be 'going independent' with him? I hope I wouldn't have to serve him if this works... Jeez, this reminds me of typical corporate politics. I don't know if demons are corporate or if corporations are demonic. She sighs.
After a few more gulps of coffee, she sends a seemingly benign text to Viv, but one that Viv will enjoy. She says, Hi Viv! It's Pers. I was thinking we could have a craft night? I have the scissors! let me know when you're free.
As she glances over her recent texts, she hesitates and hovers her finger over Circe and then Emma. Her shoulders slump, and she doesn't contact either of them. She could try Henry? No, he was worse than useless. Instead, she tries Benji, since she hadn't managed to connect with him yet.

"Of course!" says Benji, hopping up as well. "Where do you think we should start looking? Do you think she would have—"
He is cut off by the muffled sounds of his phone ringing in his pocket. Upon pulling out his phone, his eyes widen in surprise as he sees who’s calling. What’s that phrase? Speak of the devil…
"Persephone! Where are you? Are you okay? Your poor sister’s worried sick!" he says, by way of greeting, as soon as he picks up the phone.

Persephone stands in her kitchen, hot coffee mug in one hand, cell phone in another. Somehow, despite her ordeal, she is well-dressed in a loose linen top, her hair styled, and generally she is feeling very well put together. She rolls her eyes at Circe's dramatic tendencies and replies to Benji patiently, saying, "Well, perhaps she shouldn't have had me drugged and committed to an asylum, then. My Patron had to pull me out of there so I could keep working for Them. Not that she'd understand; I tried to explain to her, but she was...not receptive."
Persephone is dimly aware that she feels strangely cold and emotionless at the moment, but she is frankly uninterested in investigating that further; she is simply grateful that she is not feeling as erratic as she had been previously...
Setting aside that thought, she continues, saying, "So now I'm at my condo, but I wanted to connect with you, since we hadn't really spoken since... Well, the unfortunate incident. I was glad to hear from Emma that you'd escaped those tunnels as well. We should compare notes; I still intend to follow up with the man who killed me, Chaudry. I have plans for him."
Then, remembering that Circe is with Benji, she sighs and says, "Why don't the two of you come here, but I need you to convey this to Circe: she is only to be allowed in my condo if she agrees to treat me with respect. Otherwise, she can go to the airport and beg our parents for tickets back to California. Understood?"
She turns her head to glance over at her coffee pot, thinking she might want more, when she catches a glimpse of her distorted reflection in the panes of glass in her cabinet. Something out of place--something red--catches her eye. She squints and steps closer, twisting her back toward the glass and twisting her neck to see. Unmistakably, on her back, is some kind of mark, like a fresh tattoo--a red rune, much like the ones on the walls at Wentworth's. Somehow, she knows, intuitively, that this is what is responsible for her feeling of emotional deadness.
Fascinating, Persephone thinks, Apparently Wentworth wanted me to be a bit more ...stable. Hmm. Smart.
She returns her attention to the cell phone, awaiting Circe's and Benji's reply.

Benji is taken aback by Persephone's flat, matter-of-fact tone, and especially her lack of empathy toward Circe. "Alright, we'll meet you there, but..." He steps away from Circe and lowers his voice so she can't overhear. "I hope you're not too cross with Circe. She was only doing what she thought was best for you. It's all been a bit of a shock for her, as you can well imagine."

"We didn't have time to make living arrangements." Evelyn says. "And we did not know you would be returning home." She does not mention 'how thankful they are that you are making a speedy recovery'.
Looking at the taxi order screen you are reminded that money is short, your taxi ride back from Arundel wiped out your buffer and you have not had the time to try selling that fancy dress to recoup it. (Whether is occurs to you that Benji may not have been reimbursed for that dress —what with the unexpected absence of his 'boss'— is up to you).
There is petrol in the car, and not all taxi drivers will be pleased about helping you to and from the car to the door... though most are, you are spoiled that way. You can afford a taxi, but even those numbers are looking scary at the moment, possibly reminding you of the bag full of cash you had in hand yesterday... or was it the day before?
You may have to suck up your pride and ask for help.

Persephone replies, "Yes, yes, I know. Besides, I have no interest in blaming Circe for what happened. That serves no purpose. Now, I expect to see you both soon; I have plans this evening. Good bye."
Aug 22, 2025 5:40 am
Benji blinks at his phone for a few seconds after Persephone hangs up, baffled. Shaking his head and putting the phone away, he says to Circe, "That was Persephone. She wants us to meet her at her condo, but she seemed a little… off."
Aug 22, 2025 5:44 am
Circe looks concerned but she says, "Well, I'm sure she's off! They had her on megadoses of sedatives an hour ago, and earlier today she had, like, a nervous breakdown. I'm surprised she's able to function at all. So let's go!" She anxiously starts to walk but realizes she has no idea where to go. She looks at Benji sheepishly and says, "Um, Henry drove me here, and he left. Do you have a car? Or should we take a cab?"
Aug 22, 2025 5:52 am
"You’re welcome to stay here if you like". She kept her voice warm, trying her best to sooth her mother in law.
She fought the urge to look at her phone again. It occured to her that she reported all her credit cards stolen, and she didn't have her purse, or a wallet, so no cash either. Even is she could afford the cost of the fare, she didn't have how to pay it with.
She felt the familiar lump in her throat returning, and she had to breath heavily for a few moments to keep herself together.
Maybe Henry could help her. She could text him a bit later, before going in the cab. It was a problem for later; right now, she didn't want to sit and fiddle with her phone in front of Evelyn and Charles, not when she had to show she could be gracious company.

When Circe and Benji enter the condo, Circe is met with a transformed scene. Apparently I the intervening time since Persephone arrived and now, she managed to clean the place properly, brew coffee, and put out snacks, as if she were preparing to entertain guests. She welcomes the new arrivals and says, "Benji! It is good that you survived our ordeal. We have much to discuss." Then she turns to her sister and, in a businesslike and controlled tone, she says, "But first, Circe, I need to speak with you. Please sit and listen."
She gestures to the sofa after which she takes a seat in the chair opposite. Once Circe is seated, Persephone proceeds to recount the facts of what occurred thus far. All along, her voice is dispassionate, almost cold, but always polite, pleasant. She tells them of how her ex had stolen all of her funding, including her parents' retirement funds. She shares the account of how a mysterious investor sent agents to offer a solution, one that seemed perfect to address her issues, and all she had to do was come work for Them. She shares how, at the signing ceremony, she realized the true nature and gravity of her choice, yet, as she considered the neatness of the solution and the appeal of the life she would live in Their employment, she had a moment of weakness and chose to agree. Persephone then summarizes the unpleasant jobs she'd been tasked with thus far, surely filling in a few gaps for Circe to explain Persephone's weird behavior lately. Finally, she recounted what happened in the tunnels, how she died and met an avatar of her Patron, and how she was returned, and then rescued from the hospital. She does not, however, mention. anything about Wentworth or those moments of lost time during which she spoke to him.
Finally, she concludes, "I had been emotionally distraught by the situation--having one's immortal soul condemned to hell is indeed a serious matter, after all. And the experience of being murdered is not one mortals handle well. So the trauma and emotional clutter was picking up. Fortunately, one of my Patron's agents gave me this, which seems to help quite a bit." She turns subtly, revealing the red marking upon her back.
She nods in conclusion and looks at Circe. "So that's my tale. Any questions?"

Benji takes a seat at the kitchen island while Persephone and Circe talk, not wanting to intrude on their personal conversation. He listens intently to Persephone’s story at first but he can feel his eyelids getting heavy again. He’s so tired… and it is… a very…… long…… story………
By the time Persephone has finished speaking, he’s slumped over the countertop, completely passed out.

"Well, we will have to." Evelyn says loftily. "If we have to look after David and you all hours of the night." It is subtle —and may be your imagination— but the 'and you' clause sounded a bit grudging, like she had to add it so as not to sound petty. "Though I am not sure Charles' back can survive 'the foldout couch' we are not teenagers anymore, you know."
At the mention of his name, Charles looks up from his reading. "Wassat?" He says, then continues, ignoring the prior conversation. "They let you out early for good behaviour?" He jokes, though his wife would point out the inconvenience of this, what with them dropping everything and rushing through only to arrive right be before you got home. "When do you have to go back?" He asks, confirming that he was not listening earlier, but also opening the door for talking about having him helping with that.

Circe squirms as you sit her down and talk at her in a businesslike manner for what feels like ages. She does not look at all comfortable with the facts.
"That's terrible." She says diplomatically. "For how long? And how are you going to get out of it?" She asks, clearly assuming you are working to get out of the deal.
She takes a small breath, as though she has been dreading this part, before asking the burning question: "What... um... what do you have to do, exactly?" Your summary may have skimmed over the extract details with Viviana and sharing those specifics with your sister —about 'dooming a sweet lady to hell'— might make that job much more difficult... though lying to her now will have long-term consequences.
Circe has not said anything about the mood-patch-tattoo, but you saw her react viscerally to it when you showed her.

"You and Charles should take the bedroom. David and I can make do with the couch for now. It’s fine" living with her parents in law was going to be ten times more challenging than living with Sarah. But at least this time, she could take comfort that they won't be staying forever
She has been second guessing herself a lot since her 'accident'. As the minutes go by she becames more and more nervous about having no money to pay the taxi fare with. She decided she didn't want to rely on Henry after all; he was going to ask too many uncomfortable questions she didn't want to answer right now. Plus, she didn't want to bother him at work just to pay for her ride.
With a soft sigh, she taped her phone and cancelled her ride. Maybe she could take the subway, if there was enough spare change at David's wallet to cover the cost. And if not, she will just have to wait until she can walk by herself, however long it takes...
"I’ve got an appointment with the cosmetic surgeon in about an hour and a half," she says softly to Charles, once he finally raises his eyes from the morning paper "So I’ll need to head out soon."

"Hmm? A local place?" He asks, not having 'cosmetic surgeons' where he comes from. "Are you all sorted for getting there? Or can I help?" Notice that he asks if he can help, not if you need help, almost like it is for his own sake, this is exactly how David would have offered, to make you feel better about the imposition.

She looks around for her crutches. It was going to be a terrible trip through stairs, and puddles, and crowded platforms. But at least she won't be a burden on anyone else...

"Don't be ridiculous." Charles says, waving away your 'imposition'. "You can barely walk, and you don't want to aggravate the injury. I would be happy to take you. Give me a chance to check out your car." He assumes you would not mind him driving, and that the car will need attention, he fixes everyone cars back home, even though that his not his job.

That’s… very kind of you" she stops for a moment as he mentions her car, again feeling like she is going to break down. "There are spare keys to my car at the kitchen's drawer"
She stammers, as she nervously fiddles with her phone for a moment, tying to gather her thoughts
"My appointment’s in about an hour and a half. But if you wouldn’t mind leaving now, we could make a quick stop along the way…"

"Certainly, my dear." Charles says, and this seems like the first time the word 'dear' has been used without barbs attached. If he registers the need for 'spare keys' he does not comment, merely standing and going to the kitchen to scratch through drawers.
"Are you ready?" He asks. "Or should Evelyn help you freshen up." He does not leave it up to Evelyn, so maybe he did notice the tension?

" I’m fine" gripping her crutches, she pushes herself off the couch, wincing faintly as she steadies her weight. She offers a Charles a strained smile, then starts the slow and awkward shuffle through the door "I'd rather we just get going."
She doesn’t look back to see if either of them protests, too focused on the effort it takes to cross the room on her crutches. Once they step outside, and down the elevator, she draws in a breath and sighs:
"I think I misplaced my purse yesterday. Before I was hospitalised. Could we check if someone might’ve found it? It should be in One Hyde Park..."

"Quite understandable." Charles says, though he is the sort of man who thinks everything one should need to carry should fit in one's pockets, so he is probably talking about the misplacing of the purse in such a stressful situation rather than the viability of the purse as a general concept. "Of course we can swig by and get it."
Charles helps you to the lobby, asks about where the car is parked, fetches it, brings it to the front door, and helps you to the car —the passenger seat already pushed far back so you can get in easily and sit without bending you leg.
"You will have to excuse Evelyn." Charles says, focusing on the road and the traffic and not looking at you. "She has been speaking to ... your neighbour," he sounds like he does not approve of said neighbour, "and had her head filled with nasty gossip. Give her time, she will come round again, you are a good girl. Oh, here we are. Wow! Swanky." He says, looking up at One Hyde Park.
He is forced to park on a single yellow line, congestion charges have reduced the amount of traffic in London, but the rain has made the parking situation very difficult everywhere. He helps you from the car, and is clearly planning to leave the car where it is and help you into the building if you let him.
In the lobby the security guard from the other day not there, but the guy on duty greets you in a friendly way, apparently you have made an impression on your previous visits. You notice that he has a name-badge on his chest, as did the other guy... if only you could remember what it said...

Emma bit her lip. She couldn't remember everything that Pers shouted at her during their argument, only that those were vicious, baseless accusations. What really pained her was the thought that her mother-in-law would rather believe the gossip of an old neighbor than give her the benefit of the doubt. It must have meant that she hadn’t thought much of her to begin with.
"I hope so" she murmured, though she didn’t quite believe it herself. Maybe it was time to have a real, honest conversation with her mother-in-law, if only to clear the air. Maybe.
She eased herself out of the car, on her crutches, when Charles parked the car. She didn't want him getting a ticket because of her, so she made her way to the lobby as fast as she could - considering her circumstances, quickly getting soaked despite the short distance to the front door. She wished she could remember the name of the security guard who took her to the hospital, but she was so drowsy and disoriented she could barely remember how she got to the A&E to begin with. All she could know for sure was that he wasn't the same one sitting behind the desk right now.
"Hi. Excuse me" she offered him a faint smile, and pushed a wet lock of hair behind her ear "I think I may have left my purse here. Maybe it was turned in to lost and found? One of the guards helped me to the hospital the other day, and I’m afraid I might have left it in his car."

Persephone sits next to Circe on the sofa and places a sympathetic hand on her shoulder. She is expressing authentic love and support, but it is weirdly distant, as if she were a therapist or counselor acting in a professional capacity rather than a sibling.
She answers Circe's questions one at a time, presenting the facts as benignly as she can, saying, "The contract is in perpetuity, honey. That means forever, even after the death of my body. As I mentioned, I was murdered but my Patron decided that my work was not finished, so they fixed me up and sent me back. I assume that, eventually, they'll find something for me to do... down there. Unless I can get out of it, of course! I've requested a copy of my contract so I might review it, and I'm looking into my options. For now, though, I do have to do the jobs they assign me, which currently means recruiting. I am supposed to try to get other people to join our organization. It's not as if they are demanding I kill people, or something. I would rather not lure anyone else into this difficult situation, though, which is why I'm looking into getting out."
She smiles and squeezes Circe's hand and assures her, saying, "I'm OK, and I'm gonna be OK. It just might take a while, and I might have to do some unpleasant work until I do get free. Honestly, it feels a lot like working for an evil corporation until I can strike out on my own, you know? So, if it helps, just think of it as me working for, like, British Petroleum or something. I don't like it, but it's the job I have until I can find something else, you know? At least it pays really well..."
She shrugs, as if the whole moral dimension of her demonic contract was a minor thing.
I assume that, eventually, they'll find something for me to do... down there. "Ms Harper." The guard says, giving you a smile like you have just brightened up his dull day. "What happened to your leg..." He starts to ask, only to look embarrassed. "Sorry, forgot: 'Don't ask questions', sorry." He corrects, giving you a 'please don't tell my boss' look.
"Yes. Llewis, he left a message for you, if you came by. 'He has your handbag.' Gosh, that sounds more threatening then I think he meant it... He is not on today, but he said to give you his address." He does so, it is quite in the opposite direction, and not exactly close, your 'appointment' seemed a bit nebulous 'come see us when you are up and about', so being late does not feel like a big problem, but asking Charles to run all over town, to other men's homes, is a big ask.

"I don't like it!" Circe says stubbornly. She would probably feel equally repulsed by the idea of working for an 'evil corporation like BP', so you are not helping your case with that analogy.
But she is also speaking about your 'perpetual deal' and about your sudden nonchalance about it. "Can you take that thing off?" She asks —almost demands to know— about your new tat.
• She asked for details about what you have to do, your circumlocution may have put her off, for a while, but it may also come back.

Why did Llewis feel the need to take her purse back home with him??? She was beyond frustrated, but there was nothing she could do about it right now other than pout.
"Do you have his phone number?" she quickly joted down his name, and his address, for later. She wasn't going to ask Charles to drive halfway across town, but if Titainias is all she crakced up to be, maybe she could do it herself later today.
She made it back to the car on her cructhes, a bit more swollen and wet then she left it, and climbed back inside, offering Charles an apologetic smile "The secuirty guard took it home with him. I don't want to bother you right now, its across the city, and I don't want to be late to my appointment" she was very well aware that the woman on the phone didn't specify an exact time or date for when she was expected, but she wanted to ge there as quickly as possible.
There was only so much she could ask her parents in law to do for her.

Persephone chuckles and says, "Well, I don't like it either, sis! But they made the offer when I was in a real bind -- you remember what my ex did to me -- so now I have to deal with the consequences of that choice. And that's why I'm trying to get out of it!"
When Circe asks about her red mark, Pers reaches toward it and feels a twinge of pain as she touches it. She replies, "Oh this? Well, think of it as a supernatural SSRI, like Prozac. I just got it. It's helping me cope with the trauma of having been murdered, of serving demons, and so on. Hon, you saw what I was like without out! Remember me out by the elevator, having a full-blown PTSD episode? We don't want that again, now do we?" She smiles benignly, though she herself wonders, is... is that thing removable? And she realizes that the Persephone that lacks the red sigil would not want the sigil, even though now that she has it she finds it comforting. This tension concerns her, and she plans to return to it later, but she sets it aside for the moment.

Name, phone number, and address in hand you return to the car, where Charles is still looking for a parking space. "It's no trouble." Charles says, but he does not argue, he does not want you to be late, either.
Titanias is on the third floor of an old, old building. The carpet leading from the elevator is old and worn. This does not feel like the sort of place to find a plastic surgeon's office, and feels more appropriate for lawyers or accountants... and, indeed, the old, dull plaques on the doors you pass list lawyers and accountants within.
Titanias is at the end of the corridor, its bright magenta sign clashing with the general aesthetic and looking very out of place.
From within you can hear a raised voice and a calm one. As you enter the waiting-room you find a expensively-dressed older lady looking indignant and clutching her pearls (literally). "... I mean, do you know who I am?" She is saying. "No." The receptionist replies blandly, making that one word sound like it kind of carries the point.
"Emma!" The receptionist says when she sees you. "Dr Moss is ready to see you. We just have a few forms for you to fill out." She hands you a clipboard with very standard-looking medical forms, and gives Charles a welcoming smile. Their treatments are not covered by the NHS, and there is place for elusive medical aid.. which you don't have.
The artwork on the walls is abstracts of flowers that somehow manage to be suggestive.

"I still don't like it!" Circe says petulantly, encompassing the job, and the tattoo-patch, and a general dislike for SSRIs that is so common among those who have not needed them. The argument about your breakdown at least gets her off you back for right now.
"What are you doing about it?" She demands, probably talking about getting out of the job, the fact that you died and are returned and are having trouble coping with such a fundamentally altering experience is beyond her ability to process.
Circe has picked up a folder from the table nearest the door and is scrunching the end, possibly damaging the papers inside.
• Which of you two notice that this is the information Henry promised he would have his research people dig up on the Ivy Club?

Leaning on her crutches, she hobbles over to the counter and offers the older woman an apologetic smile before turning to the receptionist.
She was a little surprised that she recognized her the moment she stepped through the door; it wasn't like she said when exactly she was going to turn up, and having the doctor already waiting for her was a bit sus. And oddly reassuring.
"Thank you"
Taking the clipboard, she leaned across the counter as she started filling out the forms. It doesn't take her long - she is young, and in good health, so she's done within a short minute and slides the clipboard back toward the receptionist
"Would you mind waiting for me a bit?" she turns and quietly asks Charles. She doesn't know if Titanias would really be able to heal her - or what cost she would ask for (hopefully, not he firstborn son, or something like that!). She wouldn't want to find out she wasted her time AND have no way to get back home...

"Government requirements, you know." The receptionist says apologetically, taking the clipboard and not even looking at it.
"Of course, of course." Charles says. "I have my book." He takes a book from his coat pocket and sits looking around the waiting room and noting the lack of any magazines. He gives the older woman a friendly smile, but she glares at him and at you, wondering what you have that she doesn't.
"Come this way." The receptionist says to you, ignoring the other woman. She leads you to a back room, it is set up like a doctors rooms —with the chair and the dreaded stirrups— but does not smell like one. It is more apparent in the surgical part, but the place smells more earthy than disinfectanty, it is clean though.
"Thank you, Blossom." Dr Moss says when the receptionist —'Blossom', apparently— brings you in. He then turns to you.
"How are you doing?" He asks, all concern, looking at your crutches. Dr Moss is an older man, all wiry sinew and bird-like bones. His bald head shows some liver spots, but he looks healthy.
"We will need to have those pants off." He says apologetically. "So we can take a look." They seem to know were the bite is an everything, but that was in your medical records, so it is not all that strange. "Blossom can help you get situated." He says. "Would you like a cup of tea in the meantime. I am making myself one."

Emma hesitated. The room looked like a doctor’s office in the same staged, artificial way of a television drama set. It felt off. Fake. Maybe too clean. Or that earthly smell instead of disinfectant.
She looked between Dr. Moss and Blossom, trying to decide which of them felt stranger. The receptionist doubling as a nurse made her feel like this was all some sort of an act. Like the two of them were playing make-belief, and she suspected it wasn’t only to throw people off, but because…because of what?
She considered stopping everything right there and then and start interrogating them, but she forced herself to push that instinct down. She already came this far, and she didn’t think they invited her over just to hurt her.
"No, thank you," she declined the tea ,and then carefully lowered herself into the chair and set her crutches aside. After kicking off her shoes, she held as breath as she took her pants by herself, trying to be careful as to not brush the fabric against her bandage.

Emma smirked. She wasn't shy about her body, and if anything, undressing in front of them was more thrilling than embarrassing.
She slid her panties down her long legs and allowed them to fall to the floor. Taking her time, almost deliberately slow, she straightened up in her chair and nodded at the 'doctor' to go ahead and begin his examination

Even gay professional beauty doctors can't look away when you put on your performance. Dr Moss has returned with a large, still full, mug of tea held in both hands.
"Ankle in the stirrups, please." Moss says, then he carefully removes the bandage. His hands are gentle and warm from the tea.
"Tut tut." He says as he surveys the damage. "We can't be having that, now can we." He probes carefully with his fingers and you feel a pleasant warmth spread out from where he touches and the pain fades to the background.
"Breath." He says, his eyes focused on yours as he leads you in slow breathing, his hands have settled over your wound, lightly touching and covering the whole injury. You might notice that he is not wearing gloves.
• Did you look at the hideous wound when the bandages came off? Or did you let him distract you away from that grisly sight?

This was no different than an appointment at her gynecologist. That the posture felt obscene, rather than clinical, had more to do with her own temperament.
She breathed in slowly when his hands brushed against her skin, the warmth slowly spreading from her thigh to heat her entire body. She didn't dare look just yet; the wound was disgusting when she looked it back at the hospital, and merely imagining it in her mind made her cringe with panic. Tara was eager to rend her flesh with her teeth. A small puncture with her teeth would have sufficed to draw blood, but the vampire must have been driven to a frenzy by the taste of her.
Heart pounding, she shook her head and tousled her hair about, bitting her lower lip as she looked at Dr. Moss "Is it... Is it working?"

"Oh, yes." Dr Moss says, sounding unconcerned and still maintaining eye contact. "It's just your everyday vampire bite, nothing to worry about. We will have your right as rain in no time." He does not seem to think it a particularly frenzied biting, which might speak volumes about just how careful Elliot was with you.
"It will just take some time," he says, "to smooth things over and get you back to perfection." They have not brought up the topic of how you are going to pay for these visits.

Persephone rolls her eyes and becomes exasperated at Circe's childishness. "First of all, whether or not you 'like' it isn't really relevant here. And I have already told you what I am doing about it... I am looking into ways of getting out of the contract. Hey, give me that."
Persephone takes the now crumpled papers from her sister and furrows her brow as she looks over them. She glances to the side and notices that Benji is asleep at her counter. She absent-mindedly says, "Oh, right." She then takes out her phone and calls Wentworth's office. When his administrative assistant answers, Persephone ignores the assistant's now-expected condescension and says, "I need a pint or two of fresh blood at my condo for a vampire associate who is assisting me on a job. Now, tell Wentworth I need it and I don't want to hear your weak excuses." She hangs up before the assistant can get a word in edgewise.
She turns back to the papers in her hand and holds them up to Circe and says, "See? Henry brought these. He is helping me too. Everyone here seems to be supporting me and helping me through this. Well..." She looks pointedly at Circe and adds, "Well, almost everybody."

"That sounds more like a hope than a plan." Circe mutters, your still not having answered her question about what you are actually doing. She has not noticed that you also did not answer her question of 'exactly what do you have to do for your job', hopefully the seeming proactiveness of having a file of details will be sufficient distraction.
You are not completely sure why Henry brought this information, maybe he could have explained if you had given him a chance, but he is at work now, and, if you check your phone, Viviana has enthusiastically replied with the fact that 'her scissors feel broken, but she wants you to check it out this evening'.
Henry's file is mainly about real-estate transactions in the area South of Hyde Park, including competitive offerings between some guy called Elliot and what he thinks are the factotums of The Ivy Club. Henry is a money guy, so his reasons for thinking this noteworthy are a bit opaque, but it may be a start?

Persephone looks at Circe with a disappointed face and leans in very closely. She whispers in her ear, saying, "My demonic patron gave me this condo. They are probably listening... I don't want to share details here, ok? So calm down." Whether or not this conspiratorial espionage thriller hypothesis was true or not was not particularly important to Persephone; what matters is that it is exactly the kind of thing that Circe could latch onto.
She returned her attention to the papers and tries to make sense of them. Who is Elliot?

'A few hours' is a long time, but Charles did know he was bringing you for 'surgery', and brought his book for this very reason. If Dr Moss is disappointed he does not let on, but you can almost feel him wanting to expound on the links between sleep and healing.

'A few hours' is a long time, but Charles did know he was bringing you for 'surgery', and brought his book for this very reason. If Dr Moss is disappointed he does not let on, but you can almost feel him wanting to expound on the links between sleep and healing.

"Oh... OH!" Circe says, her eyes going round like the sound she just made. "Yes..." She says, pulling her clothes close around herself, as though suddenly uncomfortable with the possibility of being watched in her own home, even though she knew she was on camera at the hospital and possibly even knows that, in London, everyone is being watched everywhere on the street.
"So..." Circe says, trying to appear casual while changing the subject. "When do we get to meet your girlfriend again... or your boyfriend?" She amends, the mention of Henry having confused her again.

"Hours..." she tried her best to keep her eyes open, jerking her head upwards every time it tugged downwards. She didn't want to fall asleep half-naked in front of them. Being exposed was one thing, falling asleep would leave her too vulnerable in a way that almost made her panic. She was determined to fight back, clenching her jaw to keep herself awake

"It largely depends on you." Moss says with a shrug in his voice. "You can leave whenever you need to. But good results take time."

"No!" The thought of being left scarred for life jerked her back to full awareness. She pushed away her fear, and straightened a little in the chair, forcing her eyes open. "It’s alright. I’ll stay...for as long as it takes."

Persephone holds up a hand and says, "Eh, I wouldn't call him my boyfriend. We slept together; he'll probably want to keep doing so. I mostly just want his help with this stuff..." She gestures to the paperwork he had provided. "The relationship is transactional, truth be told, but I am confident that he is aware of that and accepts it as well. And if not, well, then he is hopelessly naive. As for Viv, yes, that relationship has an emotional component that Henry's lacks, though it is mostly one-sided; she is clearly more smitten than I, though I do have a certain fondness for her. As for when we will be seeing either of them, I don't know. I will be seeing her tonight, though. Now, I need a shower. Oh, and if someone comes to the door with a delivery, it is for Benji."

The paper covering on the chair sticks to you a bit as you move, but Dr Moss anticipates and moves smoothly with you, or even a moment before you do, there is no change of pressure on the ...wound... it does not feel like a 'wound' anymore, actually, just a light pressure on a healthy leg.
"That's for the best." Moss agrees.
It is comfortable and soothing in this room, there is the sound of rain outside the window, but also the faint sound of birds and possibly frogs (clicking, not ribbitting). You did not see any speakers.

Emma visibly relaxed once she realized she was going to be alright. She allowed her thoughts to drift, focusing on the sounds of the forest... or swamp? At any rate, it made her feel like she was no longer in the city, and who was to say if she still was? She was in the presence of something magical, and wondrous, and now that the panic over being scarred for life was starting to fade, just like her wound, she realized she couldn't let this opportunity slip from her fingers
"You don’t have to hide your appearance from me" she said both to Moss, and Blossom "You can show me what you really look like. I'm not afraid"

"What? You think if I could choose the way I looked I would choose to look like this? Instead of, I don't know, like you?" Moss says, his voice jovial. As you open your eyes you find that he is looking intently at your face, which could be off-putting, except: better that than other options he has to state at.
"Why do you think we are hiding out appearance? What do you think we are?" He sounds genuinely curious.

"I mean, you're fey, aren't you? So there are rules. You can't choose to look like anyone" her eyes brightened as well as she became more and more animated "Let me see" her lips curved into a smile as she studied him, trying to guess how he looked like under the spell of glamour "I think you're thin, and soft, and damp, and draped in green velvet all over. Your head is a smooth stone, like one pulled from a river, with lichens spreading across it" It felt like a game, but she couldn’t shake the thought that naming him might be a kind of spell, and that he would wear whatever shape her imagination wrapped around him "...and your eyes - I'm imagining a couple of happy fireflies, dancing across your face" she straightened up a bit, careful not to disturb his work, but just so she could catch his reaction
"...are there actual frogs in here?"
