Mora to Fornice - Jump 2

Aug 3, 2025 3:21 am
Mora's space-traffic control is nothing if not efficient. Precisely at 1300, May 21 1115, the clamps release.

"Miss Fortune, Control shows clamps free at 1300. Proceed to sat-bouy Niner Five per standard. One-third G authorized until clear."

The controller keeps tight tabs on the Athelstone-class Trader until clear of the crowded traffic zone near the huge spaceport. Then a departure 'lane' is assigned and one-G acceleration is possible. Time from clamp release to 100-diameter 'safe jump point' estimated at 7 1/2 hours, 20:30.

Said Ma double checks the 10 'frozen' passengers and all seems well. Eight low-passengers are people who travelled to Mora for medical procedures or genetic enhancements and are now returning to their homes on Fornice or further along the "Spinward Main". Only two are non-medical passengers; a married couple that had come to Mora on promise of jobs..

Kayla Hong asks if Leilani wants to accompany her while checking on the High and Middle passengers. (Either accompanied or not, she makes the rounds...)

Decherrek is, of course, doing just fine. He's concentrating on his personal comp, looking at images projected onto the fold-out desk. Very intent on whatever he's looking at...

Monseur et Madame LeFrontaine" the well dressed 'Solomani' gentleman. "I am Theodorick, but please to call me 'Terry'. And this is my spouse, Adriana." Adriana again only smiles shyly and quickly ducks her head. They occupy adjacent staterooms, but for the moment are in just the one. "We are looking forward to seeing Adriana's family on Fornice!" It seems a cheerful destination for Terry, but Adriana doesn't look up or make any indication of anticipation. "It is a welcome break from the restaurant, too! I am interested in your ship-board cuisine and am curious how this is done in space.., in jump! On such a small ship it must be difficult to provide anything more than "chow". We will see!"

Your middle passenger, "Aepheon Telom", is a stocky human-male of perhaps 50 standard-years. Looks in very good condition physically, perhaps some sensory implants and vision enhancements too; but subtle ones. He remains dressed in standard Mora business attire and is working with a high-end micro-computer when you check on him. He quickly shuts down the holographic display and indicates he is fine, and needs nothing special at the moment.

And Thessa Ting. You are already familiar with the young-looking but hard-eyed courier. She is sipping Kaffe and nibbling on a cookie in the lounge area. Watching an adventure-thriller tri-vid episode, something called "Legend of the Sky Raiders". Looks interesting. "I'm good, no worries from me. I'm feeling better about 'Miss Fortune' now that I've been aboard a couple of days. Your Vargr 'pilot' has been helpful; he seems nicer than most... Pilots, I mean. Those I've met before trend towards being self-centered. Overly impressed with themselves!"

IC: Miss Fortune – Departure from Mora High Port
Date: 1300, May 21, 1115 Imperial Calendar
Location: Mora High Port, Docking Clamp Release
Quote:
Mora Port Control:
"Miss Fortune, Control shows clamps free at 1300. Proceed to sat-buoy Niner-Five per standard. One-third G authorized until clear."
LC Rains
[activating comms, crisp and professional]
"Mora Control, Miss Fortune copies clamps free, proceeding to Sat-Buoy Nine-Five at one-third thrust. Appreciate the handoff, Control — we’ll keep our wings tucked."

He toggles ship-wide comms and leans back slightly in the command chair.
"Tharrok, ease us out at point-three G. Let’s not scuff any paint while the eyes of Mora are on us."

"Kayla, Said-Ma — brace the passengers and run post-clamp briefings. We don’t need any lawsuits from flying luggage."

"Engineering — Bronz, Tamm — confirm power flow and M-Drive status. If something’s going to explode, I’d rather it not be a propulsion manifold."

[any responses from the characters? for: Tharrok (Helm), Bronz & Tamm (Engineering), Kayla & Said-Ma (Passenger handling)]

Segment 2: Sat-Buoy Niner-Five
~1352 Ship Time | Approaching Departure Lane
Quote:
Mora Port Control:
"Miss Fortune, cleared past Buoy Nine-Five. You are assigned Lane Delta-Seven. Full acceleration authorized. Proceed to jump boundary under sensor flight rules."
LC
"Mora Control, Miss Fortune copies lane Delta-Seven. Engaging full burn toward the jump boundary. Our compliments to your team — and our apologies to your sensors if we left any vapor trails."

"Tharrok, she’s yours — one-G acceleration, clean out to the edge."

"Leilani, you and I have a date with a math problem."

[any responses from the characters? for: Tharrok to initiate acceleration, Leilani to begin nav coordination.]

Segment 3: 3 Hours Out – Jump Vector Estimation
~1730 Ship Time | In Transit to Safe Jump Point

LC
"Alright, I’ve got a deviation on the secondary vector — 1.98 sigma, maybe a shadow from Mora’s tertiary moon. What do you think?"

[any responses from the characters?: Leilani confirms or adjusts vector.]

"Confirmed. Feeding your math into the computer. Jump program's now live, syncing with drift metrics. She’ll be stable by 2030."

He keys open the engineering channel.
"Tamm, Bronz — status on energy sink charge for the J-drive?"

[any responses from the characters?: Tamm & Bronz update on capacitor charge and J-drive readiness.]

Segment 4: One Hour to Jump
1930 Ship Time | Preparing for Transition

LC
"Kayla, Said-Ma — final prep for Jump. Couch all passengers, double-straps on anyone who looks like they’ve got delicate egos or fragile spines."

[any responses from the characters?: Kayla and/or Said-Ma handle passenger reactions, safety protocols, jump briefings.]

Segment 5: Final Crosschecks – 30 Minutes to Jump
2000 Ship Time | Final Systems Check

LC
[over ship-wide comms]
"Final jump crosscheck, all stations sound off. Helm, Nav, Engineering, Passenger, give me greens."

[any responses from the characters?: Tharrok (flight vector), Leilani (program sync), Bronz/Tamm (J-Drive), Kayla/Said-Ma (passengers secured).]

"Then we’re clear. Crew to couches. Let’s light the wick."

Segment 6: Jump Initiation
2030 Ship Time | Jump Execution

LC
He keys open the engineering channel and so the bridge personnel can hear.
"Tamm, Bronz please dims the lights and reduce all non essential power for jump."

The bridge lights dim to amber. LC looks at Tharrok and then Leilani with a slight smartass smile on his face.

LC
[quietly, almost reverently]
"Initiating jump... now."

He slides the final key, taps the ignition pad. The stars stretch and warp outside. A heartbeat later, Miss Fortune vanishes into the dreamlike slip of Jump Space.

LC
[murmuring to Tharrok and Leilani]
"Seven and a half hours to earn our pay... and a week to forget the smell of Mora port curry."

[any responses from the characters?: Any character reactions to the jump, from relief to superstition to snark.]

GM wrote long ago for Jump tasks;
TASKs
NAVIGATOR. Completes Jump Calculations, then continuously updates the jump program up until jump is initiated. (Difficult Task, modified by computer and assistance from up to 2 others.)

LC Rains and Leilani coordinate and complete Jump Vector calculations and continuous updates until Jump:
LC - Nav 2
LC EDU bonus of +2
Leilani assistance +1

"Don't scuff the paint, Aye." Tharrok rolled his eyes slightly, as if I was capable of such thing, he thought. Nevertheless, his hands glided across the controls, lining up his pippers with the Marker Bouy 9-5. He eased the ship up to 30% of 1G, keeping the inertial compensators working at a minimum level.
Muns says:

"Engineering — Bronz, Tamm — confirm power flow and M-Drive status. If something’s going to explode, I’d rather it not be a propulsion manifold."
Tharrok’s eyes widened in mock fear… "I'd rather nothing explode," he said, with a wry smile.

"Copy that, Cap’n. Delta Seven, 1G. Estimate arrival at Jump Point at approximately 2035 Local Time."

Tharrok pushes the dampers up then pushes the throttles up to 1 full G, setting the course to maintain the D-7 corridor.

The absolute irony of the fuzzball comment being made by the Vargr in the group just struck me… 😄🤣🙃
Aug 6, 2025 11:53 pm
At the sound of the Vargr swearing up front, followed by a cascade of warning lights flaring to life across the engineering boards, Bronz muttered something low and sharp under his breath, old words from old places, not meant for polite company.

He moved fast, instincts kicking in, prioritizing the most critical systems first. No panic just grim focus as his hands flew over the controls, isolating faults, stabilizing what he could.

In the back of his mind, a darker thought gnawed at him: he must’ve missed something. Maybe he hadn’t dug deep enough. Whatever this was, he was going to strip these engines down no matter what LC had to say about schedules or protocol.

Because if they survived this, Bronz wasn’t letting it happen again.
