Is anyone on here familiar with the works of Philip José Farmer, specifically the Riverworld series? I ask, as I have a copy of the rare GURPS Riverworld and have been batting around the idea of using that resource and GURPS Who's Who 1 & 2 to set something up. Right now, it's in the early idea phase and may not even come to pass, but I was wondering if there might be any interest?

I have never heard of either Mr Farmer, Riverworld, or GURPS but would be interested. Something new is always interesting.

The premise is that anyone who has ever lived on Earth wakes up naked and hairless on the banks of a great river. You are in prime condition and locked at the age of 25 (unless you were younger than that when you died, of course). You remember your former life on Earth, right up to the point of your death. You have no idea where you are, or why you are here, and you are surrounded by strangers. I won't spoil enjoyment by giving anything away, but if you are considering playing in this potential game, you should remain ignorant of the setting. It would be so much more fun that way.

The cool takeaway is that you could potentially meet anyone from history. For example, the first book follows the adventures of Sir Richard Burton (the British explorer) and his companion, Alice Liddell Hargreaves (who was the inspiration for Alice in Wonderland).

I saw the 2010 SyFy Channel adaptation (back when they were more interested in developing original content than just re-showing existing movies). It was a miniseries that promised more but was never made into a full-time series.

I know that it deviated from the books, but having never read the books (though I'm familiar with the basic premise), I don't know in what way. I do know that people had hair though. :)

I'm curious, but I don't know the GURPS ruleset (though I know Harrigan was (is?) a fan). Anyway, I don't have the time to join another game for the next couple of months, so depending on the timing of your launch will determine if I can throw my hat into the ring.

Of course, you also have the option of playing someone from history! I would avoid people who would be controversial (Hitler, Christ, or Mohammed, for example), but you could play either a living person from history or a fictional personality from any time or place on Earth (up to 2025). Should you choose a historical figure, I would expect you to do your homework and learn all that you can about them, so as to portray them as accurately as possible. And if anyone wants to play themselves, you're welcome to do so if you fall within the point values set.

The deviations were such that people who had read the books asked if they had read the same novel. They should have just changed the names and the setting and kept the premise, and it would have been a better adaptation.

Well, as I said, this is still very much in the idea stage. I have a lot of work to do before it gets off the ground (if it gets off the ground), so I'll keep you in mind. GURPS is pretty easy to pick up once you have the basics down, but character creation can be a bit of a mathematical workout.

Having played Traveller for decades, I've had my share of mathematical workouts. Space combat dealt with a lot of vectors. Starship construction saw so many calculations that players started sharing Excel spreadsheets to make GMs' lives easier. Same with worldbuilding. In the third edition (TNE), you could design your own weapons.
