Prelude - Hurdy

The wind bit hard in the underpass. It almost cleansed the place of the smell of sweat and feces. The other man looked at Hurdy, his fists clenched. "Do you have it or don't you?"

H.G. clicks the stud in his tongue against the back of his two front-teeth, and smiles a wry smile.

He never asked what was in the packages or packets he delivered, and he was never told what was in them, of course, but he always knew.

"Yea man, relax. Of course I have it.", he rolls his eyes, and starts digging the small folded-up, brown-paper packet out of his vest pocket.

He hated this part. A part of not knowing what he was delivering was not knowing if the person was getting everything they had wanted. Sometimes, maybe even usually, they seemed satisfied. But not always.

Hopefully the recipient knew that this was just how Big did business, but HG didn't know if they knew, unless it was someone he'd delivered to before.

And he had not delivered to this dude before.

Instinctively, his eyes flick around before handing it over, if there were cops - now would be when they jump out of the shadows shouting, "FREEZE! DOWN ON THE GROUND!"

He didn't see any cops, but... What the fuck was that!?

He would have swore that the streets lights on either side of the overpass were flickering... in time with his slightly elevated heart rate?

Pausing probably just a little too long, he blinks, swallows, and licks his lips.
