Not Today, Death!

It's yet another day in the grimy city of Eastport. It's a foggy late morning in early spring and the overcast sky portends rain soon. The smell of salt water, fish heads, kerosene, and human waste is constantly shifting on the stiff wind blowing in from the sea.

Wherever you are and whatever you happen to be doing, a halfling man approaches you. He is nondescript, brown hair with a brown goatee, loose shirt and wide trousers of undyed cloth, and a single bright green scarf as his only affectation. He gives a quick bob of his head for a salute and says simply, "Pardon the interruption but I have come to deliver a message. You have been invited to a meeting with Master Goverbandy at his residence in the Gold Crescent to a discuss a matter of some delicacy. He will reward your attention and all due haste."
OOC:
Go ahead and introduce your character, where the messenger found you, and what you are currently doing. It's currently about ten in the morning.

Salvia sits in a quiet corner of an Inn's common room. She is a slender, young-looking elven woman, with chin length wavy charcoal black hair with a tint of silver, pale skin, caramel colored eyes, and freckles across her cheeks and nose. She wears large, circular, wire-rimmed glasses and a scholar's cloak. In front of her is a series of scrolls, which she is reading and transcribing, while muttering to herself. Behind her, arms crossed and eyes sharp, stands a beefy human man in mail, with a shield strapped to one arm, and a sword sheathed on his hip. His weathered face and eagle eyes mark him as a veteran of battle and a canny combatant. He is Arne, Salvia's bodyguard. She pays him well and the two have developed a rapport over the years; in fact, he has served her family since he was a young man.

When the messenger approaches, Arne at first steps forward, hand raised to stop the halfling. Salvia looks up and says, "Ah, it's OK, Arne. Let the messenger approach. OK, that's close enough. Now what is this about?"

When the message is delivered, Salvia nods and asks the messenger, "Oh, how delightful! And... who is this Master Goverbandy? Someone of some local significance, I assume?"

Winter is stalking through the alleys of Eastport, her nose wrinkling at the squalor and stench, when the messenger finds her. The faun is slight and nimble, standing just a bit over four-and-half-feet tall. Her long white hair is wild and loose, curled horns protrude from her brow. Her amber eyes are widely spaced with oblong pupils and bushy eyebrows. Her broad nose has a slight depression at its tip. Thick curly white hair covers her backward-bending legs, which end in hooves, and a small tail protrudes behind her. She wears plate and mail armor, and a bow and rapier are holstered at her back and hip.

Winter is far from her home village in the Wyvern Wood, but the trip to Eastport was necessary to ensure the safety of her fellow fauns. A strange plague has beset the village, one that resists natural remedies. She has come here to try to find a way to combat the plague, perhaps by raising money for a magical cure.

She's done some odd jobs so far, but has made little progress in her quest. So when the messenger gives word of a job, the ranger's ears perk up. "A reward, you say? I'll help, if the price is right. Lead the way," she says.

Hermann stood in the street; his boots keeping him clean of most of the muck. He stood and beneath his gaze he watched a slovenly man stuck fast in the grime.

What series of events had brought the wretch to his resting place?…

When the Halfling approaches, Hermann casts a watchful eye over him. He wasn’t in the business of letting unknowns creep up on him. If he was in that business, he wouldn’t be in it for very long in a city like this.

"Goverbandy? And a matter of delicacy?" Hermann says, with a righteous, pondering kind of tone! The inquisitor had suspected Goverbandy of one delinquency or another many a time, but had never had the means to prove it one way or the other.

Delinquency was never far, however. That much was for certain. And a matter of delicacy? Oh yes, this was too good to pass up.

"As you say! I will present myself today, if that suits him!" he says, turning from the muddied man and towards the halfling!

Salvia, the halfling gives a simple shrug. "A man of wealth but solitary. Much is rumored but little proved. He pays decently for my services when needed so I have little bad to say. You can find his home in the Gold Crescent. It is the only one with jade-colored roofing tiles. I have been requested to recruit several others so please wait at the bottom of the road leading to the Gold Crescent and I shall lead you all together."

Winter, the halfling bows and says, "As you wish. I have been instructed to contact a few others first. Please wait at the bottom of the road leading to the Gold Crescent and I shall lead you all together."

Hermann, the halfling bows and says, "The sooner the better. I have requested the help of others who will be waiting at the bottom of the road leading to the Gold Crescent in one hour. If you are late you will have to find the way by yourself."

Upon everyone arriving, the messenger leads you up a steep road to a neighborhood called the Gold Crescent. It overlooks the harbor from a bluff, removed from the piratic riffraff that so infests this place. He stops in front of a three-story house near the center of the Gold Crescent. The house—built from brick and covered in ivy—features a four-gabled roof with a tower out front, roofed in jade-green tiles. Shutters cover the glass windows on the ground floor, while the windows of the upper floors remain un-shuttered. The house stands on a half-acre property surrounded by neglected, overgrown gardens and a stone wall beyond them, 4 yards high and crowned with spikes and broken glass. A wrought iron gate stands closed with an old ringing bell bolted to the stone next to it.

"There should be one more of you who will hopefully arrive soon..."

"...damn fool hid a dead skunk in the officer's tent. No one expected us to be called out, and it was three days before we returned. By then the smell... A tall man that is almost as wade is sitting in the middle of a tavern telling tall tales of war when the messenger finds him.

"Looks like we'll have to finish this story later, I am needed," he calls out, then tosses a silver coin to the barkeeper to pay for his drink. He takes his pack over his shoulder and strides out.

He is the last to arrive. "Sorry I'm late," he calls out. "Came over a couple of burglars on the way, and had to teach them there is a better way."

He pats the handle of his axe.

Sorry, for some reason this thread didn't show up as unread so I overlooked it.

No worries, there's been some site coding issues lately that have borked all notifications.
The messenger pulls the bell's cord and it begins to ring. The front door opens and a tall, thin man with a mop of greasy gray hair, he wears a black suit emerges. He pulls out a key from his breast pocket and unlocks the iron gate. It swings open with a creak.

"Thank you, Phillip. I will take it from here," the man says with an equally creaky voice. The messenger bows and departs back the way you all came. He turns to you all. "I am Mr. Goverbandy's butler, Gregory. Please come this way."

The house interior is old but cozy and well-kept. You don't get to see much of it as Gregory leads you to one of the first rooms off the foyer. It is a library. Curtains cover the room’s window. Shelves lining the walls from floor to ceiling A writing desk and chair occupy the room’s center, with leather couches and wingback chairs nearby. A hookah stands on the desk next to a box of matches and several charcoal medallions.

"Mr. Goverbandy is indisposed at the moment but will be with you shortly. I will bring refreshments. Please make yourselves comfortable." With a bow he exits the room, shutting the door behind him.
OOC:
Time is important in this adventure so I'll be keeping a running tally. Most scenes take place in 15- or 30-minute increments. You have 15 minutes to introduce yourselves to each other and inspect the library before Goverbandy arrives.
Jun 29, 2025 2:08 am
Salvia follows Gregory out of the foyer, her bodyguard Arne following dutifully behind, to the library. She almost doesn't even notice Gregory's departure, or even whether there are others here, as she immediately approaches the nearest bookshelf and begins to scan the spines. She pulls out the occasional volume and inspects it, carefully but efficiently making her way through the library. When others enter, Arne clears his throat, which cuts through Salvia's book-focus. She looks up, smiles, and greets each person who arrives, saying, "Oh hello! I am Salvia Evensong, scholar of the arcane. This is Arne, my bodyguard. Do you know what this Goverbandy wants of us?" Then, glancing back at a nearby shelf, she gets distracted, saying, " Ooh, this looks like a rare volume..."

The shelves hold books on a variety of subjects, from the occult and demon-ology to histories, geographies and travelogues, philosophy, science, and pseudoscience. Some of the books lack proper titles and seem to be personal notebooks or unpublished books. Others are very rare and expensive.
Jun 29, 2025 7:48 pm
Salvia cares not about the monetary values of things; she does not find money to be important. She values books with hard-to-acquire knowledge about history, culture, the supernatural, magic, etc. She'll pay closest attention to the personal notebooks and unpublished books, probably.

Hermann steps into the room after the butler, casting a wary eye about the room. Once they are left alone, he will spin on his heel and take a hard look at the others in the room. Saying nothing, he makes some preliminary mental notes on each of them, and then looks at the bookshelf when talking of a rare volume starts.

That was always a sign of trouble.

He had several of the Occult volumes in his own collection. His eyes go to the book on demonology.

Demonology…

"Curious. What do you suppose Goverbandy might want with that?" he says, to no one and everyone at once.

Was I right in my suspicions of the man all along?…

"I am called Winter," the faun says to the others. She moves to the window and opens the curtains, looking outside warily. She then puts her back against one of the room's walls, keeping a watchful eye on all of the entrances, her hand near the hilt of her rapier. Just in case...

"He seemed to know who I am, so presumably he knows what I do," Kade says with a shrug before placing himself in one of the couches. "So I expect he wants at least me to hit something hard."

"I am Kade Callan by the way," he suddenly remembers to introduce himself.
Jun 30, 2025 1:26 pm
"Salvia Evensong. Winter. Kade Callan." Hermann says, as if cataloging the list of names and faces for later.

"Hermann Drakner. Inquisitor. Winter here seems to think you’ll have to hit something very hard very soon." the man says, motioning to the wary faun with rapier almost in-hand.

Salvia turns when Hermann speaks and adds, "And Arne. Don't forget him." She smiles warmly at the man, who nods in acknowledgement, but otherwise remains taciturn.
Jun 30, 2025 3:55 pm
Salvia tilts her head in curiosity as she resumes her perusal of the shelves. She pauses for a moment, whispers something, and her eyes flash subtly with a sparkling light. As she looks around, an astute observer may notice that her eyes continue to shine with sparkling light--not enough to illuminate darkness, but it suggests something is changed, certainly.
OOC:
Using Salvia's Wizard Sight Expert Talent! For an hour she can see auras around most supernatural and magical creatures, even if they are invisible. I figure it would be nice to know if our employer is a demon etc.
Also, I did not choose my bonus spells from my Wizard's Grimoire Expert Talent either, so I will be doing that and adding them to my sheet.

Salvia reads through some journals of Goverbandy's, one seems to be a chronical of his apprenticeship to a young wizard in the city many years ago. She, and Hermann, notice that the largest collection (and easiest to access at eye level) are books on alchemy.

Gregory comes and leaves a tray of drinks and local snacks while you wait before he exits the library again.

A quarter hour after you have settled into the library, Kytemnesis Goverbandy barges into the room with a woman following at his heels. The woman is tall, thin, fit and with plain, rugged features. Goverbandy has the appearance of one who has never worked: Short, doughy, and pale, he dresses in embroidered purple robes and wears a fez on his head. His bright red hair has all but given up on his scalp, evidently more comfortable hanging from the sides of his head. Thick, curly hair covers his cheeks, but he keeps his moist lips free from beard and mustache. He settles into a leather chair and begins smoking his hookah before he begins talking.

In a high-pitched, trilling voice he begins. "I have been robbed! Despite the large security force I employ to protect myself and my valuables, someone has entered my abode and pilfered from me. While the theft has not unduly affected me financially, certain items were taken that could prove dangerous in the wrong hands. I would like to hire you to recover the three stolen items. I am offering five gold coins each up front. If you can return all of the items by the end of the week, I'll pay you an additional twenty gold coins as a bonus. As part of this employment, you must keep the fact of my robbery a secret, both as a matter of social pride and to delay any who would seek to purchase my items from the thief who stole them. If you accept, I can share further details with you." He sucks on his hookah as he waits for a reply.

Salvia turns and listens to Goverbandy. When he finishes his offer, she clears her throat and speaks, her voice quiet but articulate and poised. She says, "Five golds up front, 20 more if we get all three items within a week's time? Hmm. And if we find the items after one week has passed? Shall we keep them for ourselves or would you still pay a lesser fee? After all, such items could probably be sold for a considerable amount as well." Her tone is matter-of-fact, not threatening to betray Goverbandy.

"And Arne, of course." Hermann says, nodding his head slightly. So often, people didn’t want their help acknowledged. Hermann had forgotten himself…
Jul 1, 2025 8:43 pm
"Someone has robbed you." Hermann says, after a moment’s silence to mull over the proposition.

"Is that to say that you don’t suspect something… supernatural? Only I couldn’t help but notice your collection of works." he says, with a cocked eyebrow.
