Character Creation

Thread for discussing characters.

As stated in the recruitment thread, if you have the Weird Ancestries book, some ancestries will not be allowed: centaurs, dragonet, ferren, harpy, naga, revenant, sphinx, sprite, tatterdemalion, and warg. Ideally each player chooses a different novice path, but it's just a suggestion rather than an ironclad rule. Characters will be level 4.

Are ancestry novice paths allowed, or would you prefer we stick to the basic ones?

Ancestry paths are fine.

Cool! I'll wait to see what everybody else wants to play before I decide. Right now, I'm looking at daeva, demigod, elf, or faun, either as their novice path or just as a base ancestry with another novice path.

Will look closer at the book after work today.

I was thinking demigod or changeling, and Mage as the Novice class I think. Then Wizard as the Expert path. But I could go in a totally different direction too! Do folks have a general sense of whether they wanna play squishy caster type, rogue/skill type, martial type, or heal/support?

I am leaning towards marshal. Either Fighter or Rogue. Leaning more towards fighter.

OK I am making an Elf Wizard. I am using the Elf ancestry, but not the Elf ancestry path; I'll be using the Mage Novice path instead.

Oh also, if we are making level 4 PCs, what kind of coin do we start with?

Nice, thanks!

Is there a GP sheet folks recommend for SotWW?

Ah nevermind! I found this one, made by our own nezzeraj!

OK! Salvia Evensong, elven mage/wizard, submitted! Her magical traditions are Conjuration, Divination, and Shadowmancy, btw.

An elf wizard! Nice! It looks like priest isn’t popular, but I can play that! It just means looking at spell descriptions! My nemesis! Will probably make it something pretty vanilla!

That was fast! Love the character. Thanks for linking the character sheet, I planned on doing that and then forgot lol.

Thanks! yeah, far and away the hardest, slowest part was reading through all the tradition and spell descriptions.

One big frustration right up front: at least half the spells use Will, not Intellect. Now, that makes sense for cleric type spells, but it also covers all the elemental spells, too, and a lot of the psychic stuff, too. In fact, I'd bet that Will gets used more than Intellect, but I could be wrong; I didn't count.

Anyway, have fun reading, KCC!

PS for @nezzeraj, I think I found a spell you may want to houserule, too. It's a 1st level Destruction spell, "break the body" (p. 105), that deals 1d6 auto-damage each round for a minute, no save, no end condition. It should have added "(luck ends)", I suspect. Otherwise, it's an automatic 10d6 in one minute as a 1st level spell! It's interesting that there are so many auto-damage spells that mention neither a spell roll nor a save.

The older magic system used to be split between Int and Will on purpose, not for divine/cleric reasons but to prevent one stat becoming too dominant. It's supposed to make you pick which traditions you are interested and not powergame by only picking ones with your highest stat. Stat bonuses are also much smaller in this game so it doesn't have as big an effect. As for that one spell, it does seem strong, but I think most combats will be much less than 10 rounds. I want to run everything as written first and then can houserule if some things seem unbalanced.
