Noxmorte sits at the silk-covered dice table, waiting for Osslame to make his roll. The old menacer frowns at the dice in his hand, tosses them into the air, catches them on his knuckles. Across the table, Scabbers chuckles ominously. "The game's not knucklebones, old fella," he says with a keen edge to his voice.

"I'll wager the tithe on the next spice camel from the Beryl Scale," says Osslame solemnly. "What will each of you match?"

Noxmorte's in Byzaron.
The City of Byzaron says:
The crossroads of all trade and riches. Seven colored gates welcome transients to it's crowded tenements, elaborate pleasure halls, and thief-choked markets. There is only one law in Byzaron; that a reasonable percentage goes to the hidden masters in their windcatcher towers. Truely, these psychic spiders know all within the city walls.
He's at the table in a high stakes game of Left-Right-Center. Onlookers crowd the walls of the small room. What does he wager? It doesn't have to be something he has now … just something he might escape with his life.

Already in the Center are scrawled slips:
• Scabbers: a night with the mistress of parakeets
• Noxmorte: (................................)
• Osslame: your enemy's left nut; a fine Larfarian blade

You've each won a bit, too.
• Scabbers: an old crown (from Noxmorte, where do you know to get one?); a virgin's teeth (from Osslame)
• Osslame: your enemy's right nut (from Scabbers); ...................... (from Noxmorte)
• Noxmorte: ............................... (from Scabbers)

The trick is to collect your winnings. Some of these bets pay slow. And it's all based on the honor of thieves. Who might kill to clear a debt.

Already in the Center are scrawled slips:
• Noxmorte: (a merchant's cart, still loaded)

You've each won a bit, too.
• Scabbers: an old crown (from Noxmorte, where do you know to get one?); a virgin's teeth (from Osslame)
• Osslame: your enemy's right nut (from Scabbers); a forgotten god (from Noxmorte)
• Noxmorte: antique dueling pistol set (from Scabbers)

I doubt either of these have seen the tithe from a spice camel. Ah well, it's the nature of this game.

Noxmorte picks up a blank slip and writes down the words, laying it in front of himself. "A bottle of fifty year old Barbasdu wine."

Here are the rules of this variant of L-R-C:

1 Center: put your chit in
2 Left: pass your chit to the left
3 Right: pass your chit to the right
4 Right: take the chit from your right
5 Left: take the chit from your left
6 Center: pick a chit from the pile

Is Noxmorte to the left or right from Osslame?

OOC:
Also:
• anyone who holds the dice can say the bidding's closed, no more chits to be written
• a person must hold a chit to get the dice
• if all the people holding chits agree to end the game, the center pile is discarded

Noxmorte is on Osslame's left. At least, that's how I saw the table when I read your initial description.

OOC:
Interesting. Same vision here. I wonder if there's some kind of default order-of-description that primes our visual imaginations? Anyway …
"A spider favor," Scabbers says glumly as he hands his chit to Osslame.

"Closed bids," Osslame says, smiling, before he tosses the dice to Noxmorte. "Your roll."
Jun 8, 2025 4:10 pm
Meanwhile, the onlookers are making side bets in coinage. Such by custom is beneath the table players.
Jun 9, 2025 12:57 pm
Noxmorte takes the dice, under his breath he whispers a small prayer of thanks to the spiders for the luck he hopes to receive. The spiders take their percentage, even of prayers. He tosses the dice onto the table. Looking at the dice, he pushes the new chit for the wine into the Center, moves the Dueling pistol set back to Scabbers and retrieves the Forgotten god chit from Osslame.

Didn't realize you could roll less than 3 dice. :) Also, without a chit, I not rolling for now. Feel free to keep going until I get a chit or the game ends. It's an interesting start for a game.

An obvious miscreant approaches the table and bows to speak in Osslame's ear. The old man looks across the table at Scabbers. "Business calls," he says. "Shall we end here?"

"Of course, old pal," Scabbers replies.

Freed of the table, where does Noxmorte go in Spider City?
Jun 20, 2025 3:27 pm
Noxmorte steps away from the table and heads out into the street. He'll have to be more careful about which table he sits at next time. He gives the street a long sweeping gaze, looking for anything that stands out from the normal crowd. He then pats his harness, feeling the documents, he heads off towards the spiders.
Jun 20, 2025 6:57 pm
It's mid-afternoon outside the candle-lit gloom of the gaming room. The cobbles of the streets are hot and bright beneath the cloudless sky. The dome-roofed buildings of white and grey stone, low and broad, are set apart enough that little shade is offered to the passerby. Numerous people walk around and past Noxmorte as he moves toward the nearest wind tower, an out-of-place cylinder of grey metal that juts far up into the blue. Its shadow stretches long across the rooftops of the buildings to Noxmorte's right, visible on the near sides of the domes.

A barrier surrounds the courtyard that surrounds the base of the wind tower. Two guards stand at the closed gate. As Noxmorte approaches, the shorter guard frowns at him. "What business?" that man demands.
Jun 22, 2025 4:33 pm
Noxmorte suppresses the look of distaste that wants to cross his face. These little men are just doing their job, despite having seen him before. "I bear documents that I was instructed to retrieve for your masters and no, I will not give them to you. My orders are to hand them directly to your masters."

The guards glance at each other. Then the short one bows to Noxmorte. "Enter, lord," he says with a tone of respect. The taller one presses the buttons that open the gate, which retracts into the wall with a low humming noise.

Noxmorte enters the tiled courtyard surrounding the wind tower. There is no trace of life in the courtyard. Not a tree or weed or rat to be seen. The Lords of Byzaron like their living spaces sterile.

There is a faintly discolored path across the pale grey tiles to the opening at the base of the tower where Noxmorte can enter. He follows the scuffmarks of previous footsteps, and enters the dark arched opening. As he steps into the tower, a pale white light blinks on to show him the staircase that spirals up the inside of the tower wall. The tower is about thirty feet across. Looking upward into the darkness, Noxmorte fancies he can see the Spider Lord hanging from its webbing, high up in the slow, steady breeze that flows in where he entered and rises around him, ruffling his hair.

Welcome Noxmorte is the voice of the Spider in his head. Unfurl the documents and peruse them. I will use your eyes.
Jun 24, 2025 12:29 pm
Of course he will, Noxmorte muses and begins to wonder how peculiar this is going to be. He unrolls the documents and holds them in the dim light coming from the doorway.
Jun 24, 2025 12:45 pm
Momentarily, Noxmorte feels a spider crawling in his brain. There is a peculiar itch around the backs of his eyes, as if the spider is stroking or suckling on those nerves that conduct vision to the deeper brain. The crawling sensation continues. It tickles. His eyes twitch and jitter across the scroll, perusing its strange encoded symbols.

He is not sure how long the spider possesses his eyes, but eventually the tickling sensation ends. He feels exhausted.

Thank you. You may go. Payment will arrive at your lodging in due time. Perhaps it will await you.
Jun 25, 2025 12:47 pm
Noxmorte bows in deference to the Spider and leaves. He nods, almost imperceptivity at the guards as he passes them. Once back into the street, he turns in the direction of his rented room. Keeping his eyes alert as he moves through the street. He angles for a small cafe with an outdoor table. His intent is for a drink and a light meal to help push back the exhaustion.
Jun 26, 2025 11:44 am
There are several cafes along the streets toward Noxmorte's lodging.

What does he look for in a cafe?
Jun 26, 2025 2:07 pm
OOC:
He's just looking for an outdoor table where he can put his back to the wall and order a lightly alcoholic drink and some food. Hoping to take a moment to refresh from his spider in the head experience.

There's a place called Morda's that is well-known for its bittersweet cocktail of sparkling mineral water and white wine. Morda is the name of the elderly grey and white bearded lizard that lounges about the outside tables. It looks calmly at Noxmorte as he sits down and gestures to Lombo, the owner. A cocktail is soon forthcoming.

Passersby pass by, the afternoon sun glides down toward the rooftops. The hottest part of the day is past.

A young woman diverts from her path to pause at the table next to Noxmorte, her slender fingers tickling the crest on Morda's head. "Niiice lizard," she says. Flirtily, to Noxmorte: "Is it yours?"
Jun 28, 2025 3:19 pm
Noxmorte looks her over, "No," he slightly shakes his head,"Morda owns this place. He likes to relax with the customers." Gesturing to a seat, "He'd be happy if you joined us."
Jun 28, 2025 6:52 pm
Morda licks the young woman's hand as she pulls out the other metal chair, its round feet scraping on the dirt. She sits a little abruptly and laughs. "I'm Yirin," she says. "I imagine you have a wonderful name." She tilts her head to the right and her loose dark hair swings around her shoulder. She fiddles with it as if she's about to start braiding it.
Jun 30, 2025 12:14 pm
"I don't know if it's wonderful, but I do have a name, Noxmorte. What brings you out into the streets of Byzaron today?" Noxmorte signals to Lombo to bring a drink for the girl.
Jun 30, 2025 8:13 pm
"Oh, I'm just on my way to work," the woman answers with playful voice. "And where are you headed, sir?"
Jul 1, 2025 2:05 pm
"No where in particular. I just finished a job and tomorrow I will seek a new one. For now, a bit of rest, I suppose."
Jul 3, 2025 12:21 am
"Well if you have no destination …" she ducks her head and smiles with a wink. "… you could rest with me." She giggles deliberately.
Jul 3, 2025 2:10 pm
"Ah, it seems you are already at work." He scans around the crowd, checking to see if anyone has been loitering too long or seems to be watching.
Jul 4, 2025 8:44 pm
"In a manner, yes," Yirin answers forthrightly. "What do you think?"
Jul 4, 2025 8:44 pm
Nobody appears to be paying any attention to Noxmorte or his companion. The city of intrigue is a busy place and people are often wrapped in their own affairs, oblivious to others' goings-on.
Jul 5, 2025 3:12 pm
"Why not? What do you suggest?"
Jul 5, 2025 7:05 pm
"Let's continue our talk in your rooms," Yirin suggests. She gestures daintily toward the street: "With you."
Jul 7, 2025 12:35 pm
Noxmorte leaves some coins on the table and stands. Gesturing to Yirin the direction he starts down the street with her by his side.
Jul 7, 2025 7:46 pm
Please describe the route to Noxmorte's room, and the outer approach to the room.
Jul 8, 2025 12:38 pm
They walk a few blocks down the busy street before turning left onto a slightly smaller street. The crowd here is thinner and there are fewer shops that open into this street. About four blocks further on they take a right onto an even narrower street, just barely wide enough for a wagon to pass. The buildings look older and feel quieter, it's part of the residential section. Another block and they turn left through an archway that leads into an interior courtyard. A small fountain sits in the middle, the three story building has twenty-four residences spread out around the four sides. Crossing the courtyard, they start up the stone stairs to the second floor, at the landing Noxmorte pulls out his brass key to unlock the door on the left.
Jul 9, 2025 11:48 pm
There's a small boy sitting on the floor in front of Noxmorte's door. He appears to be asleep. In his cross-legged lap there is a small leather bag. You could guess it holds coins.
Jul 10, 2025 12:20 pm
Seeing the boy Noxmorte will stomp his boots on the last few stairs, the louder sound echoing in the stairway. He will hold out his hand for the coins when the boy awakes.
Jul 10, 2025 4:01 pm
The kid blinks sleepily at Noxmorte, then scrambles out of the way. The leather bag thumps and jingles when it falls from his lap. The young boy stands aside waiting to be dismissed and looking with big eyes at Noxmorte and Yirin.
OOC:
I'm going to draw a veil on this scene and leave it to you to describe the aftermath.
Jul 11, 2025 12:25 pm
Noxmorte collects the bag of coins and turns to the boy, "You can go." Opening the door, he enters, scans the room and then motions for Yirin to come in.

Later, he closes the door behind Yirin as she heads back down the stairway. Locking the door he turns back and cleans up in the basin.
Jul 16, 2025 4:45 pm
Noxmorte has a bag of coins and a lingering sense of satisfaction. Assuming he sleeps, what does he do when he wakes?
Jul 17, 2025 12:33 pm
OOC:
He would go looking for work, but I don't have a good point of reference for the game world to know where, specifically, that would be.
Jul 17, 2025 8:15 pm
There are several places to find honest work in Byzaron, and an equal number of places to find … interesting work.

Presuming Noxmorte prefers to be intrigued by his tasks, we'll resort to the tavern called Blast Radius. There's a sign over the door that shows a Star Kings explosive device exploding, and inside the lighting is dim green fluorescent,

Walking in from the later morning sunshine it takes Noxmorte a moment to adjust his eyes. Then he sees there are only a few people in here at this time of day. None of them look at him. Visible curiosity is not an accepted trait in these kind of places.

Who is most interesting to him?
Jul 18, 2025 12:49 pm
Once his eyes adjust to the dim light, Noxmorte will head to the bar to get a drink. With his drink in hand, he turns to scan the room again. He walks across the room and sits at a table with an older man, he's wearing a red sash across his chest and has a long scar below his left eye.

"How's business?", Noxmorte asks with a measured familiarity.
Jul 19, 2025 12:16 pm
"Normal," answers Tombo. He looks calmly at Noxmorte. "You?"
Jul 19, 2025 4:24 pm
Noxmorte lets a half-smile show at Tombo's curt answer. Never really a talker that one. "Between, and looking," he answers keeping the words to a minimum in Tombo's style.
Jul 20, 2025 12:54 pm
"Have you ever entered a wind-lord's tower without permission?" Tombo asks as casually as if he's asking about a trip to the market.
Jul 20, 2025 12:55 pm
("wind-lord" is a Byzaroni term for the psychic spiders who dominate the city, like the one who last night crawled through Noxmorte's brain)
Jul 20, 2025 3:50 pm
Noxmorte cringes at the question, "No, I have not, and I prefer to make enemies in far away lands, not in my home. Surely not with those I often work for and who can crawl through my brain."
Jul 20, 2025 7:01 pm
Tombo smiles. "I am glad you still are not a great fool," he answers. "Listen, I have a real job."

"There are some great fools in this city," Tombo continues. "This morning, the vaults under the tower of Morza Saint of Coins were found totally bare and empty — except for a single red feather, as of a blood crow. Naturally, Morza wants to know who was responsible. A prize has been quietly offered, but I personally am not willing to poke around people who can enter a wind-lord's tower and leave again with all its treasure. I know you're not a great fool, but are you greedy enough to take this job?"

(Morza Saint of Coins is an incredibly vain arcane mathematician who never leaves its tower, but communicates throughout the city by psychic projections. Noxmorte never has had the "pleasure" of its acquaintance.)
Jul 21, 2025 1:43 pm
"The prize is for the name of the thief? That alone shouldn't be to dangerous. I wonder if the blood crow feather is a calling card or a distraction."
Jul 21, 2025 6:42 pm
Tombo nods. "Yes. Name, affiliation, patron. Those three things."
Jul 22, 2025 2:57 pm
"Well then, this should keep me busy for a bit. Thank you for the news, I'll let you know how it turns out." Noxmorte stands and offers a polite bow.
OOC:
I guess it's off for research and some poking around.
Jul 22, 2025 11:39 pm
Where does Noxmorte go to start his inquiries?
Jul 23, 2025 12:27 pm
OOC:
I have no idea, I assume there's some place or part of town that Noxmorte would go to ask questions. Also, What does he know about blood crows? Is that a common animal?
Jul 23, 2025 4:32 pm
There are other taverns, similar to Blast Radius, where Noxmorte might hear rumors of a daring or foolhardy heist. One such is the Gripped Hands (the sign over the door shows two hands in a shake), where he was playing at dice the day before. Another is Sevens, which is known as a resort for those like Yirin. Perhaps Noxmorte does not indulge in braggadocio to impress carnal acquaintances; but such discretion is not universal.

Blood crows are unusual birds, about the size of an eagle, that frequent the mountainous southern jungles known as the Beryl Scale. Some people say the birds serve or once served the Star Kings as scouts, messengers, even assassins.
Jul 24, 2025 12:40 pm
He will head across town to the Gripped Hands, seeking information and trying to stay out of any gambling games.
Jul 26, 2025 2:17 am
"Hello, good fellow," says a voice that Noxmorte knows. He looks to his right just after he entered the Hands, and sees Osslame hunched over a table with a cup of something that smells and steams like mulled wine. It's summer, so an odd choice of beverage, but Osslame is known to be odd.

"Not the Barbasdu vintage you promised," Osslame adds with a sip of his drink, "but good for now. When do you think you'll have that bottle for me?"
Jul 26, 2025 2:55 pm
Seating himself, "Well, that'll be after my next trip to Barbasdu. In the meantime, have you heard of the spider with the empty cellar?"
Jul 26, 2025 11:16 pm
Osslame nods. "Talk of the town. Surprising that the spiders haven't already crawled the whole city to find the thief. I guess they're limited in what they can do? And maybe only the victim is looking. Wouldn't it be funny if one spider stole from another?"
Jul 27, 2025 2:35 pm
"Funny's not the word, if it was a spider and it get's caught, the others would tear it limb from limb, for starters." Scanning the room to see if anyone's watching him before continuing. "There's a prize, I hear for anyone that discovers the thief. Any thoughts?"
Jul 28, 2025 2:08 pm
"Yes. I heard of the prize, and of a red feather left in the vault. Sounds like some kind of a catch-if-you dare. I'd be cautious of venturing into an investigation. One of the guilds might be involved, and they're dangerous to cross."
Jul 29, 2025 7:13 pm
"Pfft, the streets here are dangerous to cross. I'm looking for leads, if there are any."
Jul 30, 2025 6:32 pm
Osslame laughs briefly but loudly and earnestly. "Well said. Ok, look, there's a guild that is literally named the Crows. Does that seem too on-the-nose for a crow feather to be left in the vault? I think so. But maybe there's someone who wants to cross them up. I'm not real plugged in to the guild culture, but a lot of folk cross paths at Pretty Birds."

Noxmorte has heard of Pretty Birds. It's like Sevens but fancy.
Jul 31, 2025 12:55 pm
"That sounds promising," standing up he leaves a coin on the table. "For your drink and your time." Heading into the street he pauses to scan around before heading off towards the Pretty Birds.
Jul 31, 2025 4:31 pm
Osslame laughs. "You don't need to tip me, young fellow. But thank you."

Pretty Birds is in a part of Byzaron where buildings are tall — though not so tall as the spider-lords' wind towers — and the establishment is in the lower floor of a nine story gleaming black stone building that seems to weigh heavily on the pavement around it. There is a finely-filigreed golden cage above the four steps that lead down from the street to the gold-leafed door. In the cage are several colorful birds that screech as Noxmorte approaches.

The doorman is a thick fellow with the ears and snout of a wolf. He half-snarls at Noxmorte, "Guest list?"
Aug 1, 2025 12:53 pm
With a half smile, Noxmorte replies. "Unlikely, any openings at the bar?"

Aug 6, 2025 6:15 pm
The back entrance is a loading dock in a fairly wide alley. There is a delivery wagon parked in front of it and the roll-up door of the dock is open. Noxmorte observes two burly men carrying a large barrel from the wagon into the recess of the dock.
Aug 7, 2025 12:15 pm
As the two men enter the dock, Noxmorte will grab a box off of the wagon and head up the ramp. He'll try and avoid the men with the barrel and see if he can make it through the storage area to the front, or at least the kitchen.

Noxmorte is vaguely aware that he's underdressed for the Pretty Birds.
OOC:
Please describe the clothing of the patrons, and contrast Noxmorte's garb
Aug 11, 2025 4:10 pm
Noxmorte is wearing his standard harness, the leather straps were not originally cheap, but are showing their wear. The same can be said of his boots, he cleans them regularly and should only be sporting today's dust. His waist wrap is recently new, but it too was not expensive. Noxmorte can tell the patrons of the Pretty Birds are of a higher class, some men are dressed similarly to Noxmorte, showing off their scars and wealth at the same time. Their harnesses appear brand new, the leather shines and the metal buckles have various designs engraved and inlaid in gold. The other men, obviously those who've made their money without the sword, are wearing fine fabrics of light weave. The loose fitting style of the clothing is designed to keep them cool, but also show off their wealth rather than their form. The women are grouped into two types, the older ladies have a reserved and disguising style that again, shows off the wealth and less the figure. The younger women seem to be here as decoration for some of the men, showing a moderate amount of flesh and having closer cut designs with lot of gabs or slits to offer the chance of seeing more.
Aug 12, 2025 4:48 pm
Noxmorte perceives disdainful glances from the better dressed civilian men and women, cool recognition from the successful men (and women) of the sword. Mercenary interest from the decorative women.

How does he seek information?
Aug 13, 2025 1:59 pm
Noxmorte makes his way towards the bar, signaling for the bartender. "An ale please, how's your day going?"
Aug 13, 2025 3:14 pm
The bartender looks at Noxmorte with a haughty face. He's an older man, elegantly groomed and dressed in clothing slightly simpler than the civilian patrons — but still, finery. "Lovely," he answers. "Are you enjoying your visit?" The implication being that Noxmorte is a tourist, not a regular.
Aug 15, 2025 2:58 pm
Noxmorte smiles at the intended jab. "I am, thank you. Just looking for a little information, the people here see the city from a different point of view than the masses."
