Chapter 3.1: The Second Expedition

Jun 1, 2025 5:04 am
Buoyed by the unusual experience of an uninterrupted night's sleep, the Dungeon Busters were energized and set out on the second day of their trip through the Dim Forest. The Dungeon Busters note when they pass the path that leads to the Jarls' newly-abandoned house and continue onward. Chase forges ahead as usual, content and accustomed to solitude. The other three who've been to Orlane - Myrtha, Theran, and Aanbo - share details with their companions who haven't been there yet - Jonel, Morton, and Arya - as they continue hiking through the day. As the hours pass and miles are traversed, talk continues to planning on how to proceed into Orlane.

There isn't a solid consensus by the time the sun is setting, and they still haven't reached the place that Chase had selected for their next camp. As night falls and plunges the Dim into the dark, Chase lights a torch and waits for the party at the edge of Cecily's Road. Eventually he sees the group's light in the distance, and he waves them over. They proceed to the site and the Dungeon Busters drop their packs and stretch as Chase lights the set fire with his torch. Everyone other than Morton is keenly aware of Rosemary's absence, if only for her habit of always having wonderful food ready to eat. Since she's not here, they proceed to tuck into rations or magic berries...

"We're about three miles outside of Orlane," Chase confirms to the others as they spread out around the fire.

::It was supposed to be safe:: Ember thought to herself for the fiftieth time. Durgal had suggested that she lay low to get the heat off of her in Hookhill, so she'd headed west, into the Dim Forest and on to the obscure little village of Orlane, where no one knew her. Everything seemed fine at first, but then they'd come for her in the middle of the night. If she'd been a little bit more trusting, if she'd been a little more deeply asleep, they would've taken her unawares. As it was, she'd barely made it out the window and into the night. ::I don't know who they were, but they sure had a lot of stamina!:: she thought to herself. The cloaked figures had chased her as she left Orlane and kept right on after her into the forest.

Now, Ember was pretty sure she'd lost them...but she wasn't sure where she was herself. Strange noises from nocturnal animals and the fear that stealthy figures were sneaking up on her kept her moving in the darkness, feeling her way through the underbrush. She did her best to keep quiet, but it was slow going when she couldn't see her hand in front of her face.

So it was with great relief that Ember saw the campfire of the Dungeon Busters in the distance. Finally able to see, she snuck a little closer and started to observe the campers. As she watched them, she found herself relaxing: these were clearly not bounty hunters or assassins; they seem to be traveling adventurers settling down after a long day's march.

With great trepidation, Ember approaches the circle of light. She takes a deep, steadying breath, makes sure that her weapons are firmly sheathed, and then steps into the circle of firelight, arms spread wide. The girl is a human waif, of average height and build, probably no more than twenty winters old. Her red hair offsets her vibrant green eyes, and she wears an awkward smile. Her clothes are functional, but plain, of subdued colors. She wears leather armor and a rapier on her left hip. A leather backpack sports a length of hemp rope, and a shortbow is across her torso, the quiver at her side.

She approaches with arms wide, to show that she has no weapons drawn. "Ehr, hi. My name is Ember. Ember Heatherton. I've been wandering in the woods for what seems like hours, and I'm cold. Could I share your fire?"

Aanbo remains seated where he is, poking a twig into the aforementioned fire. "For hours, you say?" he says, meditating on the chosen words. "Where did you come from to find yourself lost in the Dim?"

The monk looks to Chase and Theran as he follows with a second question. "And your friends? Are they still out there, somewhere?" Aanbo is wary, as there has been far too many occurrences of ambush that he wonders if this young human is bait to get the group to lower their guard. No sense in being accusatory at first, of course, so the questioning is meant to gauge the threat level.

"My frien...? No, I'm alone. At least, I think I'm alone. These people in the village nearby were chasing me. They tried to take me in my sleep, but I think I managed to get away. At least, I hope I did." She glances over her shoulder as an owl hoots loudly. "I don't know why they tried to take me."

"You came from Orlane, then?" Aanbo asks, as if learning about a person's hometown.

Aanbo tips his head at an empty spot near the fire. "Have a seat, then," he says, and holds out a serving of rations in a small cloth. "Food, if you want."

The dwarf rises and dusts his bottom, while his bare feet knead the earth in thought. "You'll want to share your experiences with us, as we're headed there. It'd be good to understand what you witnessed and if you can remember who might have been involved." Aanbo looks to Myrtha and Arya to speak to the newcomer as he steps away from the fire.

"Chase,"
he says as he approaches the border warden, "let's take a walk and make sure our guest wasn't followed."

- " If a girl could stumble upon our camp," Arya reasoned, " Probably less innocent could do the same. Camping in this region seems to invite trouble or meeting a lone stranger. " She reminded that's how she met Jonel for the first time.

Addressing the girl with gentle compassion, "My name is Mother Arkon; I am a daughter of Pelor, the Sun God. May His light bless you for escaping those poor, misguided souls."

Leaning forward, "You mentioned they tried to take you while you slept. Can you tell us who they were? Were they strangers, or did you recognize any of them?"

"Don’t Forget to eat, Ember," the muscular woman in scale mail said, pointing at the rations Aanbo had set before the newcomer.

"The food in Orlane tends to be spiced with Buteo, and that herb will put most people to sleep. Deep sleep. Makes it easier for the villagers to take their prey…"

"Were you spending the night at one of their fine Inns? The Golden grain, perhaps? That’s where I ate tainted food that nearly cost my freedom; could’ve cost my life. Or was it the Slumbering serpent? Haven’t set foot in that one yet, but I’m afraid their cooking might be just as nasty.

Myrtha kept a level gaze directed at Ember. A rapier and light armor meant this was not a simple traveler. What was she, then? She looked from Ember to Theran, and back. "Im Myrtha, by the way."

Ember eats timidly at first, but with growing ferocity with each passing moment. It is clear that she has not eaten for a while. Between bites, she answers Myrtha. "The Golden Grain sounds familiar. I think that was it. Why are they trying to take people? What do they do with them?"

"Putting women to sleep and..." A tremor ran through her voice, her eyes clouding with a dark dread. The unspoken implication hung heavy in the air. "I hope you can help us stop them, Ember. We need your knowledge of the town."
Jun 3, 2025 11:57 am
"So, the Golden Grain," Myrtha responded with a tone suggesting that answer gave her much to ponder.

"They drug folks to take them to Her, it seems. Did you hear any of them say that?" she continued, still exploring what Ember might have overheard.

"People from Orlane, even other folk, are roaming wider and wider, seeking out offerings for Her. Nearby farmers were taken, a whole family. Those who take the innocent travelers often have a spiral marking, or amulet. Have you seen any of that on your assailants?" the warrior continued, still in that tone that could be just curiosity, or a test of some kind.

She waited quietly for answers, before pursuing her line of thought.

Just then, as Chase and Aanbo head off to the edge of the firelight, each member of the party becomes aware that there is something out there in the darkness, lurking out of the firelight. Arya's words echo in everyone's head, as they are painfully aware how very far the firelight must be visible in the thick darkness of the forest at night.

Round one
(this was followed by round two)

There is rustling in the trees around the campsite that everyone hears now. Whatever is coming, is coming from above.
Arya, Ember, Aanbo, and Theran notice two shapes in the canopy: a giant arachnid ("Six"), and a small humanoid ("Three").
Arya and Ember notice "Three" as well (they cannot see "Six" in the darkness). (Note: amended because Six is just at the edge of the firelight)
https://i.imgur.com/62Qj4Dp.png
Note that the things in the trees are 15' above the ground where the party stands.

"There!" Ember calls out, pointing to the humanoid in one tree (Three) and the arachnid in another (Six). She leaps to her feet and runs to the edge of the firelight below the tree with the giant spider in it, whipping out her rapier to prepare for the spider's approach.

Chase whirls away from Aanbo, yanking out an arrow and nocking it as he spies the shape of Three in the tree branches above them. He draws, aims, and looses; the arrow is lost in the darkness.
The giant spider aims its spinnerets and launches a stream of silk at Ember.
Ember is Restrained by the silk.

Seeing the danger, Morton pulls at the thread of awareness that is ever at his side. Mentally grasping it, Morton feels the fell attention of the being he has come to think of as the "Laughing Lord." The Entity is amused at this situation; as Morton points, the Laughing Lord opens a gateway to the Abyss, and a jet of heat streams from the half-elf's finger. The branches of the tree rock in the blast, but the giant spider is unharmed.

Barely seen from this angle, a figure sits upright on the spider's back: another small humanoid! Brandishing a javelin like a spear, this one (which we will call "Five") shouts into the night: "Bree-yark!" Chase doesn't know what it means, but he instantly recognizes the tongue of the hated foes from his days as a Boundary Warden: goblins! Of the assembled Dungeon Busters, only Aanbo can speak the language, and understands the battle cry as "Get them, everyone!" The spider-riding goblin flings its javelin at Theran.
The javelin whistles over Theran's head and lands in the fire, sending sparks flying.

https://i.imgur.com/nr3A15I.png

Myrtha grabs up her weapons and rushes to the bound Ember's side. She flings a hatchet into the tree at the spider-riding goblin, but it smashes through the leaves and falls somewhere beyond the tree in the darkness. Myrtha then switches the magic spear to her dominant hand.

Jonel draws upon the pulsing magic within him; the energy flows up his arm and blasts out of his outstretched hand as a bluish-white beam toward the goblin perched in the tree branches.
Three takes 2 cold damage and its speed is reduced as frost forms on its body.

Theran scans the goblins and the spider hiding in the trees, as he lets his will flow outward, the power of his intent serving as a catalyst for the invisible field of spores surrounding the wood elf. Even as he does so he draws the power of nature up through the tip of his staff, hardening it as little blossoms sprout along its length.
Theran gains 12 temporary HP.

Arrows fly from the four goblins crouched in the trees around the clearing. Three of them had been more successful in their Hiding that they remained undetected until now.
Aanbo would have taken 7 piercing damage but he catches the arrow before it hits him. He decides not to throw it back at the attacker.
Arya takes 5 piercing damage.
Jonel takes 4 piercing damage (with a 14, it would still hit even if Jonel casts Shield).

https://i.imgur.com/udwDcit.png
Note: enemies one through six are 15' up in the trees.

Having snatched the arrow out of the air, Aanbo drops it on the ground and blurs forward, running full tilt at the tree where the goblin archer revealed itself. With a tremendous leap he bounds into the tree. A moment later, the goblin falls from the tree, dead.
Goblin One takes six damage and falls, dead.

Mother Arya prays for healing.
Arya gains 4 HP.
Arya rushes toward the tree where Aanbo is crouched, shield held over her head. "Camping is cursed in that forest!"

https://i.imgur.com/wC4MHl4.png
Note that the enemies and Aanbo are all 15' up in trees.

@WhtKnt - "Readies an Attack of Opportunity?" You don't need to use the Ready action for an attack of opportunity. Since Ember can see the creature, she can attack now. Or, as an alternative, she can Ready an Attack action with a specific trigger. Which would you like to do? I'm only asking because an attack of opportunity will happen only if a target moves adjacent to Ember and then moves away again (at which point you use your reaction to make an attack with a melee weapon in hand - it doesn't need to be readied; that option is always available for a combatant's reaction). If Ember attacks now, no trigger is needed. If you use a trigger, it might be "Six attacks someone in the party" or "an enemy moves within reach" or something else.

"Watch out, there's more!" Aanbo says. His warning is too late; the arrows have already come flying from many directions.

Fresh from his rigorous training, Aanbo's reflexes aren't quite as instinctive as they ought to be, but he manages to sense the incoming projectile as if it were a flowerpot thrown by Tuan Vo. He spins, using the flat of his palm to try and slap the arrow along its shaft. "They're all around us!" he says, in case the others have not yet noticed.

Assessing the arrow's trajectory, Aanbo sights his target and charges towards the goblin. He knows that there might be other threats, but he has to at least tie up and engage this particular one in order to prevent more ranged attacks. The monk draws his new shortsword, eager to test it out against his opponent.

@CancerMan - Note that the goblins are all 15' off of the ground in the tree branches.
Aanbo's Deflect missiles roll means that he caught the arrow and can throw it back as a part of his reaction.

Aanbo's Step of the Wind means that he could spend 1 Ki and run and jump to get into the tree next to One as his bonus action. If you choose to do this, you could keep your shortsword attack as your action. Otherwise, he'd have to perform ranged attacks to hit any of the enemies.

Didn't realize they were all in the trees. I'll spend the ki point for Step of the Wind instead of my previous bonus action, to get into the tree and apply the Attack action. Thank you!
Having caught the arrow and knowing that ammunition might be valuable to Chase or Myrtha, Aanbo simply drops the arrow at Chase's feet before sprinting over to the tree that One hides in. He leaps up and plants a foot upon the tree trunk to propel himself even higher until he can get to the goblin's level.

Mother Arya prays for healing and ducks down under her shield by the packs.

Round two
(this was preceded by round one, followed by round three)

Ember struggles mightily and manages to snap the strands of spider silk, freeing herself!

Chase scoops up the goblin arrow that Aanbo dropped and turns it on the goblins, sinking the shaft into the head of Goblin Three.
Goblin Three takes 9 damage and falls out of the tree, dead.

The giant spider crawls down out of the tree and up to face Myrtha and Ember. Since it just had an axe thrown at it, the spider leaps at Myrtha, attempting to bite the burly woman warrior.
Myrtha takes 9 piercing damage and must roll a DC11 CON save.

Ever-watchful Morton is thrown off by the sudden leap of the spider; he barely misses the spider with his demonic Eldritch Blast.

Upset with itself that it missed its first throw, the spider-riding goblin draws another javelin and hurls it at Theran again. Again its throw misses the druid; the javelin passes between him and Jonel and skips off the ground into the dark woods.

OOC:
Note about the spider-rider: as he is mounted on the Large creature that is adjacent to Ember and Myrtha, the goblin is not adjacent to either Dungeon Buster. That means he can be targeted with ranged attacks but not hand-to-hand ones unless they have reach.
Stabbing with her magic spear, Myrtha pierces the chitin of the Giant Spider, then uses her Action Surge to stab it again, the spear punching into the arachnid with wet crunching noises.
The Giant Spider takes 15 damage!

Jonel moves east, running away from the flames toward the edge of the firelight, and draws upon his heartspring of magic energy to toss a Fire Bolt over his shoulder at Goblin Four.
Goblin Four takes 1 fire damage!

Able to see the dark forest with his monochromatic darkvision, Theran rushes away from the fire to support Ember and Myrtha, smashing the Giant Spider with his burgeoning staff.
Giant Spider takes 10 damage!

Up in its tree, Goblin Two draws and tracks the druid's movement, then looses an arrow at Theran.
Theran takes 5 piercing damage!
From the canopy of another tree, Goblin Four takes aim at the lone figure still at the campfire: its arrow flies at Morton. The light of the fire is too bright for the goblin, and the arrow goes wide of the mark!
[ +- ] Theran and Jonel leave the fire
Aanbo gracefully drops out of the tree, landing between the dead goblin and Arya. "Mother Arkon," he urges her, "Take cover!" Then he sprints toward the next tree and leaps impossibly high - three times his own height! - into that tree's canopy, adjacent to Goblin Four!

I thought she did last round. Thanks.
OOC:
Aanbo didn't reach the forest; the goblins attacked when he was at the edge of the firelight, but then he jumped up in a tree. Do you want her to climb that tree, or just run into the dark forest to take cover behind one?

Strictly speaking (by which I mean rules as written), this is what Arya and the other humans can see:
[ +- ] What the humans are supposed to be able to see with only the firelight
Now, I've already said that I'm being a bit more forgiving than that: you can all see the shapes of the things in the trees, which means that you can see the closest trees in dim light (even the ones off to the west, where Goblins Two and Five are). But everything beyond them is the full darkness of the Dim Forest at night. If any PC wants to take cover behind one of those first trees, they can, but they'll need a light if they want to see where they're going beyond that (everyone can see the firelight from a long way off - so putting a tree trunk between you and the fire is easy - but the fire doesn't help seeing what's on the ground in the darkness outside of the firelight).

Round three, continued...

Morton's dark power sends another blast searing into the darkness, missing Goblin 5.

Myrtha stabs the goblin who'd been riding the spider - what seems like their captain (Goblin 5) - with her magic spear!
Goblin 5 takes 5 piercing damage!

Jonel flings a burst of fire into the darkness, singeing a branch of the tree near Goblin 2. The canopy is lush and so the branch begins to smolder, rather than bursting into flames.
Theran...?

Goblin 2 looses an arrow at Morton, who'd dared attack their leader (and is furthermore lit up by the campfire). In fact, he is TOO lit by the campfire - the light hurts the goblin's eyes, and it misses.

Goblin 4 whips out its scimitar and tries to slash Aanbo with it.
Aanbo takes 8 slashing damage.
OOC:
@MaJunior - you can still take your turn.
@CancerMan and @Nebula - it is time for Aanbo and Arya to take their turns.

Aanbo grunts as the goblin's blade reminds him that it's harder to dodge attacks while stuck in a tree; perhaps his next visit to Tuan Vo might involve some practice in tight spaces. The pain narrows the monk's focus into a quick thrust of his shortsword, followed by an open-hand slap across the goblin's face.

Rolls

Pretty Good Shortsword to hit, piercing damage - (1d20+4, 1d6+2)

1d4+2 : (1) + 2 = 3

Theran attempts to clobber the goblin rider, but finds that its armor is protecting it.

Aanbo strikes back at the goblin that just slashed him. It dodges his blade, but the dwarf's hand comes around and slaps it across the face.
Goblin 4 takes 3 bludgeoning damage.

Arya takes shelter in the darkness.

Round four
(this was preceded by round three)

Ember tries to skewer the goblin boss, but her blade glances off of metal armor he is wearing under his rags.

Chase looses an arrow; the shaft flies through the air and passes over the arrow that the goblin was drawing back with his own bow, and sinks into the goblin's eye.
Goblin 2 takes 10 damage and dies, its body falling out of the tree with another thud, unseen in the dark undergrowth.

Morton's eldritch blast scorches a hole in the goblin boss' rags, revealing the chain shirt that he wears underneath.

The spider-riding goblin leader chokes on the poisonous spores surrounding Theran.
Goblin 5 takes 6 necrotic damage.
Goblin 5 is really sweating now: three-to-one is not great odds. It tries to decide which opponent to attack...in the end, its unreasonable hatred of Theran outweighs any other assessment. It attacks the poisonous fungal druid!
As Myrtha continues to protect Theran, the fighting woman's shield blocks the first slashes, but the monster is determined and tries again! Once again, the second attack manages to slip under Myrtha's shield - the huge fighter may have a problem with such little guys - and bites into Theran once more.
Theran takes 4 slashing damage!
The goblin boss gives a little inarticulate cry of exultation at the spray of blood, but this turns to dismay when it sees that it hasn't evened the odds after all, and Theran is still standing. It disengages and flees into the darkness of the woods outside the reach of the firelight.

https://i.imgur.com/ruVNddI.png

Myrtha charges into the darkness following the terrified goblin leader. The goblin is not being particularly clever in its retreat, moving in a straight line and crashing through the underbrush, so that Myrtha has an educated guess as to its whereabouts.
Myrtha feels the spear connect, though she cannot see it. Theran and Morton watch in satisfaction as the warrior woman plunges the magic spear into the goblin's back.
Goblin 5 takes 8 piercing damage and dies.

Jonel trots back toward Morton and the fire, aiming carefully into the tree in front of Aanbo. With a precise shot, he flings his accumulated magical energy in a gout of flame, hitting Goblin 4.
Goblin 4 takes 6 fire damage and bursts into flame. It falls to the ground with a crunch that ends its scream.

With that victory over the goblin marauders, each PC gains 75 XP!

Yes, that's right: goblins can Disengage as a bonus action (and this one did). As a human, you do move faster than a goblin, though, so you could chase after it and attack (with DISADV), or use a ranged attack (also with DISADV).

Aside from the crackle of the campfire and the burning goblin, the only sound is the crunch of leaf litter as Myrtha makes her way back through the woods toward the firelight. After a few moments, a bat swirls past, swooping up bugs attracted by the light. An owl hoots. All appears normal.
Jun 19, 2025 3:56 pm
Aanbo climbs down from the tree, and ties a small strip of cloth around his mouth and nose. It's time to collect the bodies and move them away from the campsite. He tests whether the goblin at his feet is safe to move, and decides to let the flames ebb since there's more around, and goes to the tree that One occupied.

As he nears his destination, he asks Arya, "Are you all right?"
Jun 19, 2025 4:51 pm
As the monk begins to clear the area of bodies, Ember cleans her weapons, and Arya offers healing while tidying her clothing, the group takes stock of their situation. Aanbo, Myrtha, and Theran are the only Dungeon Busters still wounded; the druid fighter most of all. The goblin raiders had a paltry amount of coin on their persons: the party is able to retrieve 68 seals and 120 cubs. Only one short bow survived falling out of trees, and the heroes are able to search and retrieve 23 arrows in total (between their own and the goblins' arrows) and four scimitars. Most of the goblins were wearing greasy hides, but the leader also wore a chain mail shirt.
OOC:
Note: Theran started the combat using his Wild Shape not to change form but to activate his Symbiotic Entity ability; this gave him increased damage in combat but it ALSO gave him 12 temporary HP. "I've no use for the weapons," says Aanbo, "and I don't feel like taking them with us to Orlane. I'd prefer just leaving them with the bodies, but if anyone wishes to get one, let me know before I carry them off."

He steps up to Theran and nods. "I feel the same. I admit, I sorta miss the beds back at Hochoch. Plus not having to look over our shoulder all the time.

"But you? Are you okay? I thought I saw you take some nasty bruises back there."

After the opportunistic attack of the goblins, it takes a while for the adrenalin to work out of their systems, but gradually as the camp is cleared, the collected Dungeon Busters and their guest Ember calm down and relax around the fire once more. They resume their schedule of watches, and the rest of the night passes uneventfully.

Each PC gains the benefit of a long rest: abilities and spell slots restored, spells prepared, one ration consumed, up to half of total hit dice restored. The night before, Aanbo meditated on the pain from his wound and concentrated on its conflict with the rest of his body. He gathered his focus and pressed his index finger at certain areas of his body, blocking the negative energy and redirecting the positive flow. Of course, he could only do so much, and Aanbo dug into his medical supplies to stave off the remaining pain.

As the sun rose with the group, Aanbo sat before Ember. "So, we didn't get a chance to talk," he says, legs crossed and arms resting on his knees. His fingers idly pick up the soil next to his bare feet. "In fact, I don't even remember introducing myself. I am Aanbo. And we..." He gestures to everyone else in the party. "... are Dungeon Busters."

The monk continues, "If that name is unfamiliar to you, that's fine; not so important as what is to happen next, at least. If you haven't already figured it out, we're on our way to Orlane to put a stop to whatever's going on there. It will be dangerous work, but you have faced your fair share of danger, haven't you? Despite your obvious skill in defending yourself, we can't force you to join us as we head back into the very town that threatened you."

Aanbo points west. "Hochoch is a safe place, but at least another day's journey through the Dim Forest if you were to leave now. If you wish to go there, I can provide you with some food and advise you stick to the road and travel quickly, but unfortunately we cannot accompany you as we're headed in the other direction."

He grabs a fistful of soil and sprinkles it upon his shoulders. It seems to be a habitual gesture, but by the look of his stained clothing it's something he's been doing for years on a daily basis. "So, my question to you is, which way will you go? Will you journey to Hochoch?"

Dividing the coins as evenly as they can, the party gets eight shares that are equal in value:
Six shares of 8 seals and 20 cubs
Two shares of 10 seals

That said, where are you all going? How are you all entering Orlane (Orlane map)? Staying on Cecily's Road, or fording the river (easily done; different members of the party have done this without even commenting on it in the past) to enter via Ramne's grove or the farms to the north of the town?
Jun 23, 2025 3:58 pm
If Ember is offered a share (she does not request it), she takes her share and places it in her purse, nodding her thanks. Even though they had fought together, she seems distant somehow, as though she is still a stranger and knows it.

OOC:
IC, Aanbo wanted to know what Ember's plans were. In his eyes, she is an innocent traveler that shouldn't be caught up in Dungeon Buster business. In the interest of moving on, is it safe to say that Ember is willing to accompany the DBs back to Orlane?
"Our target is the Golden Grain Inn," says Aanbo, mostly as a reminder given last night's harrowing encounter with spider-riding goblins. "I'd like to sneak in at night, unseen from the townsfolk, especially since half of us are known to them."

He looks at Arya, Jonel, and Morton. "However, you three are strangers. You could walk into town without too much issue." Musing a thought, Aanbo asks, "What do you all think? They enter the Golden Grain as travelers looking for a meal, while the rest of us attempt to open the way into the tunnels? We could try to meet up before we delve below, somehow."

After another thought, the monk adds, "Then again, I don't know what convenient excuse they could use to suddenly join us in the cellar, not without a battle."
Jun 23, 2025 4:20 pm
Ember shudders at the thought of returning to the Golden Grain, but she does not voice her feelings. She looks at Aanbo and answers his unspoken question. "With your permission, I would remain with your group. There is something evil afoot, and I recognize the value of safety in numbers. And from what I have been able to discern, some of you have had run-ins with these folk as well, and that makes me both wary and curious."
Jun 23, 2025 5:09 pm
"I'm up with whatever is put together."
Jun 23, 2025 5:32 pm
Aanbo smiles at Ember's response. "You don't need my permission," he says. "Besides, you've proven resourceful and capable."
Jun 23, 2025 7:28 pm
"We could enter through the cellar door, at night with more ease…" the warrior-woman said. "we managed to enter undetected through that entrance. It would give us access to the warrens below without, at least I hope, without warning the weird fanatics…", she continued, with evident distaste for these people.
Jun 23, 2025 8:01 pm
Aanbo asks Myrtha, "Should Mother Arkon, Jonel, and Morton come with us? I sorta feel like despite them being unknown to Orlane, we should stick together."
Jun 24, 2025 2:38 am
Looking to Aanbo.
"You seem to have a plan in mind. Splitting the party against unknown odds seems risky. I will support you all to the best of my abilities."
Jun 24, 2025 3:46 am
"More of an idea, really," admits Aanbo. "We know that the trouble stems from worshippers of Her, whoever she is. We know that there are tunnels under the Golden Grain Inn. We're guessing that the tunnels will lead to wherever those worshippers or cultists do their business."

He looks to the sky to gauge how much daylight is left. "That's why I considered getting into those tunnels and going where they go. I don't know what to expect, nor what to look for; I just know that somewhere in Orlane is the source of all its troubles."

Aanbo sighs. "We already tried to be like spies and pretend we're travelers, hoping that we could find someone to talk to and get them to reveal what we needed to know, or hoping we could find clues to identifying the true nature of the problem. That didn't work out too well as the cultists took their own initiative and tried to take us down, just like they tried with Ember.

"We can't go in accusing everyone of being a cultist. There are still innocent people who are trying to get by, and they know something is wrong, but they don't know what it is. What's even more difficult is that some of their neighbors have been turned, but those neighbors haven't yet done anything that indicates they're evil. And if how we left Orlane last time was any indication, just mentioning cultists to innocent people puts a target on their back.

"Given all that, I can only think of trying to sneak in without anybody seeing us. Find a way into the cellar, enter the tunnels, and push forward until we can't no more. What do the rest of you think? Can we sneak into town under cover of darkness and get underground without anybody noticing?"
Jun 24, 2025 5:40 pm
Chase has been listening to the convo"I believe we could sneak in through Ramne's grove and maybe stop real quick to het a heads up and give a heads up. Then sneak back in through the cellar. They might have that trapped or something now though so we will have to be careful. looking around at the newer members"I think we should stay together. They poisoned us when we went to the inn. We don't need that again."
Jun 24, 2025 8:52 pm
"Speaking to Ramne might indeed be a good starting point, though perhaps only Theran should go, in a shape that would elicit no suspicion. And after conferring with him, perhaps we may learn how the town has reacted to the latest event, and plan accordingly."
OOC:
We could head through the woods to a spot near Ramne’s cottage, and have Theran fly or walk in and speak to the old man, if he is there. And if he is not, perhaps that will tell us something of about what transpired since we left…

Aanbo nods, giving the suggestion considerable weight. He looks to Theran and asks, "What do you think about that idea? Assuming Whiskers doesn't try to eat you in whatever shape you choose."
Jun 24, 2025 11:43 pm
"Don't go in as a bug or tiny rodent." Hahaha
Jun 25, 2025 2:01 am
"My only hesitancy, is the number of times I am able to change shape is limited. Using one to approach Ramne is understandable, but he hasn't formally met me. He may not take kindly to me appearing in his grove," Theran points out as he weighs the options. "And of course, it means that's one less change later on... and I may need it if we meet resistance."

The elf shrugs, leaving the choice to the others.
OOC:
IIRC The only time Theran was around to meet the hermit, he was a spider riding on Aanbo.
Jun 26, 2025 3:35 pm
As they discuss how to contact Ramne, the party of heroes find their way to a good spot to cross the Realstream River - fallen trees have pushed up against some boulders on either side, allowing a slippery but fairly easy traversal - and proceed through the Dim Forest on the northern bank east toward the village of Orlane's outskirts. After two hours, they have reached a point where a long range bow shot might reach the grove. They settle down in concealment and quietly make their final determination: who will go first?
Jun 26, 2025 4:19 pm
"Perhaps I should go, instead," Aanbo says, doffing his pack. "Theran is right. I am known to Ramne and Whiskers, so our discussion can happen quickly rather than Theran having to prove his innocence. I'm smaller than average so hopefully I won't draw attention from the wrong pair of eyes."

He stands, not caring if any dirt or leaves stick to his pants. "I wouldn't mind some cover, of course. At least someone that can see if there's trouble. If it comes to a fight, I don't plan on sticking around unless Ramne is in danger."

Despite making the decision, Aanbo looks to the group for any objections.
OOC:
I'll add a stealth check in case there aren't any objections, since Aanbo would move right away.

"We can’t all go but we should approach the grove together. When we’re near enough, most of us should hide while Chase and you head to Ramne’s hut. Chase can keep watch and cover you in case there is trouble while you sneak as well as you can to Ramne’s place. I’m sure Whiskers will see you both approach, so Ramne will be expecting you. Assuming he’s still around."
OOC:
We’re still 3 miles away, so I’m suggesting we move together towards the grove, stopping fifty yards or so from the edge of the clearing. There, an advanced party can close the remaining distance while being close enough to the bulk of the party so we can be useful in case of trouble. This all assumes we can approach undetected from cultist patrols…

"They helped us," answers Aanbo. "And they weren't helping the cultists, at least last we left. That's partly why I'm going to visit before we head for the tunnels."

The monk says no more about the old hermit, focused more on his surroundings the closer they encroach Orlane.
Jun 27, 2025 5:25 am
Ramne
The others hunker down and wait for a signal while Chase and Aanbo move furtively from tree to tree through the Dim Forest toward Ramne's grove. It's not quite 10 in the morning when they arrive at the edge, pausing cautiously in the bushes before entering the open. The others are close enough that they could come running at a shout.

As usual, the old hermit Ramne is tending his garden a little ways from his ramshackle cottage. Despite facing away from the bushes where his visitors are crouched, he stiffens and then starts muttering to himself. "Oh, it gets so lonely here by myself. If I ever had any visitors, I would take them inside for tea and cakes. Everyone is so nervous, what with those murderous ruffians on the loose, that no one dares come by to visit. I tell my friends that no one would bother us here, but no one comes by my cottage to catch up on current events..." Then he chuckles to himself and starts to sing a little song, garbling lyrics and nonsense words.
Jun 27, 2025 5:52 am
Aanbo does a final check of their surroundings before he dares to approach further. "I think it's okay," he says quietly to his fellow Dungeon Busters, even including Ember in his statement.

Still, he is cautious in his approach. "Good morning, lonely gardener," says Aanbo. He speaks quietly as though fearful that the nearby trees will betray his words, or at least conceal spying eyes and ears. "I am a bit famished from the road. Do you have tubers or carrots to spare? I feel like I could eat eight of them before noon."
Jun 27, 2025 9:41 am
Chase walking up with Aanbo"Also if you could spare some tea to wash the dust of the road down that would be nice. We will gladly pay for anything we consume."
Jun 27, 2025 6:43 pm
Ramne
The old man sighs, and then chuckles at himself for thinking that 'visitors,' 'inside,' and 'cottage' would be clues enough for the adventurers to sneak inside so they could meet in secrecy. Then Ramne stands up, brushes the dirt off of his hands on his robe, and turns to Aanbo and Chase with a smile. "Good to see you again," he says in a low voice, and gestures to the shack. "Whiskers tells me we're not being observed now, but do step inside the cottage where we can be more certain of privacy."

Once the three of them are inside, Ramne resumes: "Eight of you, then? It'll be a tight fit, but we can make it work." He tidies up a bit as the others arrive, stopping periodically to gaze at nothing - apparently receiving some sort of communication from Whiskers. Chase steps back out and gestures to the others, who flit through the trees and slip into the cottage. Soon enough, all of the adventurers are squeezed into the small space with the old hermit, Ramne.

"Welcome to all of you." He says, his weathered, wrinkled face cracking into a warm smile. To Aanbo, Chase, and Myrtha he adds: "I'm glad that you were able to find five other heroes to help us in these dark times."
Jun 27, 2025 8:08 pm
Myrtha smiled back at the wise, quirky old man. When she heard him speak of the additional forces brought to help, she assumed a more serious tone.

"You’ll need all the help you can get, and us DungeonBusters won’t leave you on your own against whatever is brewing in Orlane…"
Jun 27, 2025 9:16 pm
Chase will sip his tea and ask Ramne"How is Alan doing? He helped and I would hate to think anything happened to him and his family."
Jun 27, 2025 10:06 pm
Aanbo made sure to introduce his companions to Ramne, and vice versa. "Mother Arkon, Morton, Jonel, and Ember," he said, indicating each in turn. "And while you might have had a suspicion, this is Theran. He was with us in our first visit to Orlane. Everyone, this is Ramne. And Whiskers. Though it was risky for them, they helped us greatly in Orlane, especially in getting out."

When the conversation turned to Alan, the monk felt compelled to add, "And the mayor? What about the Constable?" Aanbo realizes that he has become too hasty, and settles back to absorb any answers that might follow.
Jun 28, 2025 2:25 am
Jonel pulls his hood down, bowing slightly.
"Thank you for your hospitality, sir."
He gets comfortable as he listens to the news.
Jun 28, 2025 12:36 pm
"Your kindness is unmatched."
Jun 28, 2025 3:01 pm
Ember smiles as she shakes Ramne's hand. "It is nice to meet you," she says aloud, but her eyes show mistrust and caution.
Jun 28, 2025 5:39 pm
Ramne
Rather than serving any refreshments, Ramne nods to each of the heroes as they are introduced, then begins speaking. "Normally I would take the time to act the host, but you need to know what's been happening since you left. That day, there was a big outcry when they found everyone dead in the Golden Grain Inn. Everyone was particularly shocked about Bertram's murder." He looks sharply at the adventurers and then his face creases with grief. He shakes his head and sighs, aware that the Dungeon Busters' lives were also endangered: fight or die.

"Everyone except for one survivor, that is: a guest at the Inn named Iggy Olivero, who swore that it was a gang of bloodthirsty adventurers who murdered everyone. He said he was only spared from death himself because he barred his door until citizens came to investigate and chased off the killers." Ramne looks at the ceiling and then down at the floor, frowning.

"Well, you can probably guess how that news was received. After all that has already happened, people were panicking. They took out all the victims and the village held a big funeral ceremony for them on the shores of the lake so everyone could attend. The Priestess of Merikka, Misha Devi, presided over the service. I don't know why the Priest didn't come himself; she said that he was busy with prayer and meditation for the village in these times of crisis. There was a lot of grieving and honoring all of our dead neighbors, but then it turned to a lot of speeches. They had that merchant, Olivero, repeat his account of the attack, and then the Constable and his assistants took turns talking about how 'we have to be ever vigilant against these outsiders' and 'excise the external threats to our safety and security.' They really worked up the crowd into a frenzy. Mayor Ormond tried to calm things down, but Constable Grover accused him of sympathizing with murderers and Priestess Devi led the crowd in a prayer that we all 'could convince the Mayor to see sense without any further violence.'" Ramne sighs and rests his face in his hands.

After a moment, he resumes. "It was masterfully done: a threat and an accusation. She's crafty beyond her years. What could he do? The Mayor backed down. Since then, the village is in a frenzy of xenophobia. The Constable has established a citizen watchforce that patrols the village and investigates reports of suspicious activity. Everyone is on edge, and it's harder to tell who has been converted to evil and who hasn't. Whiskers has seen people accused of harboring adventurers taken away by the watch. I don't know what's happening to them."

To Chase's question, he responds: "I haven't seen Alan for a week, when he was with one of the patrols that came by to check on me. They've left him and his family alone in exchange for his participating in the patrols. I think they're scared of him and his wife, so they hadn't tried moving against him yet. I haven't had to participate in the patrols, on account of my being 'so old and batty.'" He stoops and bugs his eyes out for this last.

"Villagers are getting rewarded for spying on each other, which is why you shouldn't stay in one place for too long: there's no telling when one person might decide to peep in on old Ramne." His shoulders sag and he sighs. "They haven't figured out that Whiskers is my own little watch girl, thank Merikka. Otherwise they'd chase her off, or hurt her. Gods, I don't know what I'd do without my precious Whiskers." His eyes moist, Ramne takes a few moments to compose himself again (Whiskers is not in the shack, of course: she's still out watching and listening for intruders). "Ahem. On top of the loneliness and pain, I'd have no idea what's happening. But even she can't see or hear everything. She's only one weasel. So it's good that you came in from the woods, trying to avoid attention. I encourage that you continue in that vein."
Jun 28, 2025 6:12 pm
"I expected as much," says Aanbo. He allows himself a sigh and his shoulders sag. "I confess, I had the chance to end the Constable's threat, but he was at my mercy and I could not follow through. I am sorry that I have endangered the villagers by leaving him alive. It's obvious now that he has no remorse. The next time we meet, I will show more resolve."

Straightening his back, Aanbo continues. "This priestess, Devi. What you say of her prayer sounds exactly like what we've heard others say. They speak of a common theme of enlightenment, opening the eyes of others, and access to greater knowledge through Her. I don't know if we showed you their symbol, but it is a spiral that is worn as a medallion or even tattooed on the skin." He looks at Arya, knowing she still carries one, and perhaps she might show Ramne what it looks like. "Those under Her influence wear these symbols secretly, under clothing like the Constable or on skin not commonly visible."

"We plan to sneak into the Golden Grain Inn at night. There is a cellar that leads to tunnels, and I suspect they lead to the Temple formerly of Merikka. Since the village is under increased scrutiny, it seems like we made the right decision to go under cover of darkness. However, you mentioned the watchforce; do you know of a way we can avoid them as we move to the inn?"
Jun 28, 2025 6:47 pm
"I fear we've done more harm than good," Theran replies solemnly. "And I fear it will get worse before it gets better. The priest is likely dead, and this Priestess is a manipulative snake."

The wood elf's knuckles are stark white as he grips his staff, eyes narrow amd the edge of his lips hinting at a snarl.

Jun 28, 2025 8:55 pm
Chase after hearing all that has went down says"I expected as much. The same rabble rousing is happening in my homeland. It is hard to get people to hear the actual truth sometimes. What of the other two we left in the cellar?"
Jun 28, 2025 11:00 pm
So, we move against the priestess, then? Cut off the head, and all that."
Jun 29, 2025 1:29 am
Ramne
Ramne earnestly clasps Aanbo's solid hand. "Do not ever despair of having mercy! It is a noble thing that you have done this, even if Grover remains an unrepentant villain. Do not let the evil of others lead you to darkness!" He looks intently at the others in turn. "Grover was a good man and true until recently. Most of the people I know in Orlane were fundamentally good people. I still believe that those that have been led down this dark path may be redeemed. Though I admit, my attempts to make them see reason - through argument or art - have been fruitless. But while there is life, there is hope! I have confidence that you can figure out the source of this evil and stamp it out. Perhaps then the good people of Orlane will recover their senses..."

Ramne frowns at the mention of the spiral symbol. "This...this is unfamiliar to me. It's nothing to do with any organization I know of in Orlane, Geoff, or Keoland as a whole. Spirals such as these...different cultures across history have used such symbols in elemental rituals. Often the spiral is used to indicate water, and sometimes air. Misha Devi is the junior priestess of our Temple of Merikka; it would make sense that she refers to "Her" as Merikka is usually depicted and described as a woman. But this spiral is not any symbol of Merikka I've ever seen." He considers. "Yes, it is probably as you say: if they wear it in secret, it is likely a symbol of their secret organization. Given that it is not a known symbol of any legitimate organization, we might get word to the Mayor, and get him to begin to check people for such signs of allegiance to a secret society."

When Aanbo mentions the plan to return to the Golden Grain Inn, Ramne responds: "The Golden Grain Inn is closed now...or at least, there has been no observable activity there since the day they brought out Bertram and the others. Bertram had no relatives here; no one to take over the business, and the Cralloons have taken in Snigrot, more out of pity than of any necessity for help. You are unlikely to meet anyone in there, once you get in...at least, until you reach these tunnels. I know nothing about the tunnels you mention."

To Theran's comment: "It had not occurred to me that they would have killed the head priest, Abramo. Horrifying to think that these secret villains could get away with such things. There will be a reckoning, I fear, even if the people who have been led astray are returned to their native good nature."

In response to Chase's question about the secret basement room, Ramne shakes his head. "Two in the cellar? Who would they be? The only survivor that has been mentioned was that merchant, Olivero. Could it be that they're still down there, starved to death? Or that they got out and never mentioned that they were there? Can you describe them, or name them?"

To Ember he nods. "Whether you decide to investigate what's happened to Abramo or what's happened to the men you left in that secret room, you should move on quickly. Every minute we spend talking here increases the likelihood that we'll be discovered in our conference. The watch patrols are less of a concern to me than the random villager who decides to curry favor by spying on their neighbors: a big group moving in the open can be seen and avoided, especially during the day, but a solitary person creeping in the shadows? That's more of a danger."
Jun 29, 2025 2:17 am
Theran's eyes close when the hermit mentions only the merchant being found. "Were you able to see everyone buried? It would not surprise me in the least if they killed their own for failing, and added them to the tally of deaths they laid at our feet. Those two... could have attested that we were merciful. Or at least fair. And that would fly in the face of the picture of us that is being so carefully painted."

The wood elf proceeds to describe the two they had left in the downstairs in as much detail as he is able, confirming that -- while they had been restrained so as to not be threats -- the Dungeon Busters had indeed cared for them, as a matter of principle.
Jun 29, 2025 3:17 am
Ramne
Ramne shakes his head. "I didn't examine the bodies closely, for all that they paraded them around town before the funeral. It wouldn't do to show too much interest, or attract that much attention. Bertram's bulk was recognizable: that man loved his food and drink! Two others were quite large, but more like these two," here he points at Myrtha and Chase, "rather than an innkeeper. The last one was rather smaller."

At Theran's detailed description of the two thugs, Ramne's eyes widen. "That could only be Hamiff Alpo and Lhari Dunne! They aren't dead!" He chuckles. "Or at least they weren't when they came with a patrol to take some of my vegetables yesterday." He whistles low and squints. "They're probably fine. If your description is accurate, then they managed to get out of that secret basement room and have said nothing about being at the Inn, not wanting to contradict Olivero's account."

Jun 29, 2025 5:13 am
Aanbo nods. "They also seemed unaware of some information, such as what other people were doing either for the group or for themselves. Makes me think they're blindly following, so perhaps after we finish with the temple we can show them the truth."

Looking at the large group and remembering what Ramne said about visitors, Aanbo asks, "Is there a way to remain hidden until night? Given the size of our party, we might be hard-pressed to remain undetected."
Jun 29, 2025 7:59 am
Arya listens carefully, but keep her eyes behind them to make sure they are not followed or spied upon.
Jun 29, 2025 5:09 pm
Myrtha listened carefully and did not interrupt. These were grim tidings, indeed. She also felt the time pressure growing by the minute. They mustn’t be caught, and mustn’t get Ramne caught.

"You say the inn is closed. Does that mean there is no apparent movement in or out of the place at all? No lights or hearthfires?"

These wicked villains might have many failings, but stupid they were not. Hamiff and Lhari’s survival meant that the evil-doers knew that the party knew of the hidden passages of the inn. They might be expecting us to return, might have trapped the passages, or collapsed tunnels. Going that way seemed far more dangerous now than it had seemed before entering Ramne’s hut.

Then it struck her.

"How small was the smallest body they brought out of the inn, Ramne? not child sized? Not a hobniz?" she asked, with such edge of dread in her voice that she involuntarily slid into her native flan dialect, for the designation of a halfling. Her mind raced to their disappeared companion, Joseph.

Jun 29, 2025 9:38 pm
"We would be waiting in the barn out back behind the inn. It has served us well."Looking Aanbo"I surely don't want anyone going off by themselves." He will smile "That is my job. I could scout it out for us then?"
Jun 29, 2025 9:51 pm
Aanbo shakes his head. "Even though it should be dark, I think that once we move for the inn, we all have to get inside as quickly as possible. We can't afford to wait in the barn and risk one of the patrols coming by. Back then, they didn't think to check all the buildings, but now they do since they're even coming here.

"And since the inn's doors are locked, I don't suppose anyone knows of a quiet way to get through?"
Jun 29, 2025 11:17 pm
"I... uh... I might be able to help with that. I have some... experience in that area." She knew what she was risking, telling these relative strangers about her particular talents, but she also realized how dire the situation had become.

OOC:
Some background information.

It sounds like the party is trying to decide three things:
1) When to go (now to the barn, or wait until night before moving from the Grove)
2) Where to go (The Golden Grain Inn's front door, cellar door, or back door)
3) How to go (all together, or have Chase scout ahead solo first)

To help with those decisions, here's some background information for those players whose PCs haven't been to Orlane before now (which the other PCs will have told yours):
[ +- ] Known Orlane today
- The party is currently at #7 on the map, Ramne's Grove (marked with a tiny star representing the party). It is a tiny shack surrounded by garden beds, all surrounded by a thicket of trees (an extension of the Dim Forest that comes right up to the north street). Two narrow paths wind their way out of the trees to the North Street. Visibility in the trees is very low; foliage and bends in the paths limit how far you can see or be seen. Undergrowth off of the paths is thick and would be difficult terrain for anyone other than Chase (whose favored terrain is Forest).
- #2 is an arching stone bridge that leads across the Realstream River. People on the bridge are very exposed to view, though there is a low (pace-high) wall on either side that someone could crouch behind. Someone crouched behind the wall would move slowly but be hidden from the view of anyone not on the north road or high up in the mill (#8 on the map).
- #1 is the Golden Grain Inn. The front door is the one in the south wall, the cellar door is in the west wall (closest to north street), and the back door is in the north wall. #1b is the Inn's barn/stable, which has a large door in its south wall (facing the Inn)
- The brown lines on the map are roads:
Cecily's Road enters from the west (left side of the map), meanders through the village on the south shore of the lake, and exits to the east (right side of the map).
North Street is the road that heads north from Cecily's Road and crosses the bridge at #2, then continues to the north, exiting from the top of the map.
Lake Street is the road that starts from North Street, past Alan Clayborn's house (#6) and the Slumbering Serpent Inn (#5), runs along the north bank of the lake, and curves around south to connect with Cecily's Road again.
- The Temple of Merikka is the large grey square on the hill to the northeast of the village.
- The numbered spaces on the map are locations that the party has visited. Everything else is more or less unknown, though the purple shapes indicate houses, the green shapes are businesses with shingles out front (inns, merchants, etc), and the light brown shapes are outbuildings/workspaces (like barns, sheds, workshops, stables, etc).

OOC:
Thanks, its been hard to follow lately.

Myrtha looks at the different speakers in turn, but hasn't much to add at this time.
OOC:
I'm pretty sure we're not thinking of hanging around Ramne's cabin until nightfall. As soon as we've talked, we should get back into the Dim, and prepare for our night raid.

matmaisan says:

OOC:
OK, so I'll amend my earlier summary:

The party has to decide three things:
1) When will you go? (now to the barn, or go into the woods to wait all day before moving)
2) Where will you go? (The Golden Grain Inn's front door, cellar door, or back door)
3) How will you go? (all together, or have Chase scout ahead solo first)

Note that you are not limited to these options, of course. These were just the suggestions that players have made so far. Absent some spying NPC raising the alarm or me making the choices for you, there's not much I can do to continue.

The party needs to decide what they're doing in order to proceed.

"Alright. How about this, then. We fall back into the woods. Completely stay away from the town for now. Once night falls, we sneak into Orlane as a group and head towards the door into the cellar. The trapdoor from Bertram's room is a choke point. Indeed, Bertram's room is a choke point. We cut through the cellar to the tunnels and meet whatever challenges head on."

The wood elf turns to Chase. "You're an excellent scout, but none of us are infallible. All it takes is one set of eyes at the right moment, and it's you against the entire town until the rest of us can get there... and hope we're in time. I say wr stick together -- our lives may depend on it."

Aanbo nods, but he says, "A couple of minor details to work out, though. First is the river; we'll need to cross and I don't know if it's better to ford the river beneath the bridge or cross somewhere to the west outside of town and try to sneak to the inn from there.

"The second is which door to enter. I'd like to think the door on the north wall is the better one to enter since it doesn't face the street. That's the cellar door, isn't it?"
OOC:
Which door did Chase and Aanbo enter during the bar fight when they reunited with Myrtha and Theran? Was it the back door on the west wall?

OOC:
By "door into the cellar" I meant the one from the street directly into the basement.
"I say we cross the river outside of town. Safer, and less likely to get noticed if there are complications."
Jul 1, 2025 4:39 pm
"Depending on the time of our attack, we might simply cross the bridge. I do recall some hounds in the buildings on the road we took to enter Orlane the first time…" the warrior suggested.
OOC:
Chase and Aanbo entered through Bertram’s door into the taproom. So they entered, in the dark, through Bertram’s door to the outside. While Myrtha, Theran and Reptile had come up from the basement, into the kitchen, and from there to the taproom.

Aanbo nods again, thankful for the different observations. He looks to the others for their input.

Yes, just to confirm about the doors:

(in this image, the exterior doors are GREEN)

- The front door is in the SOUTH wall of the Golden Grain Inn, facing Cecily's Road. This door leads into the common room of the Inn on the ground floor. When the party left, 10 days ago, the front door was intact.
- The cellar door is in the WEST wall of the Golden Grain Inn, facing North Street. This door opens onto stairs leading down into the wine storage (below the kitchen), and from there you can go through another door east into the basement. When the party left, 10 days ago, this door had been removed from its hinges and was just leaning up against the doorjamb.
- The back door is in the NORTH wall of the Golden Grain Inn, facing the barn. This door opens onto a private bedroom (Bertram's), which also contains the trap door leading down to the secret basement room. When the party left, 10 days ago, this door had been completely destroyed by being kicked to pieces.

Aanbo adds a consideration. "That door we first entered, the one that's not facing the street. It's reasonable to think it's been boarded up and won't be as simple as fiddling with a door knob, yes?" He sighs. "Maybe we do need to risk the cellar door? Does anyone have a means to shroud our approach or mask our presence while Ember bypasses the lock?"
Jul 1, 2025 8:24 pm
"It isn't absolute, but I think I can make us a bit harder to be noticed," Theran offers.
Jul 1, 2025 8:36 pm
"The cellar does seem like the best option. When we get there though I can always check the door to Bertram's room. If nothing has been done by some off chance easy entry." Thinking a bit"It does seem best if we pull back to the dim and ford the river there somewhere. Doing all this in the daylight is surely a no go. Although we have managed to sneak across that bridge a few times."

"Would a bit of fog do the trick? It's something that I would need complete and total focus to maintain."

Arya had no objections to the plan put forth by the group's most experienced members, she would follow their lead. With her own magical abilities paling in comparison to the other spellcasters, she knew she had little to offer in the way of alternative strategies.

He seems prepared and ready for action as he is alert. His great club is still hanging over his back on a cord as he has nothing in his hands. Having noted before that he is a spell caster, this probably isn't a surprise not to have a weapon drawn.

As the party prepares to enter the village once more, we continue the adventure in Chapter 3.2.
