Retreat! (RP)

May 20, 2025 3:14 pm
Continues from Winter our discontent.

- Emma -

David was still mostly asleep when you got back from visiting Benji's grotty grotto, and he has left for work by the time you arise on Friday morning. Henry is picking you up 'just before lunch', the 'retreat' staring in the afternoon (possibly still a vestigial plan, left over from when it was a 'beach outing') with lunch, and the 'spa or refs', and the 'icebreakers' around sunset (sounds like more beach-talk).

Are you ready when Henry arrives? Is he on time?

Do you let Henry come up and help you carry your bags, or do you, maybe, have Sarah help you bring them down to the 'lobby'? Or do you try to avoid having Sarah and Henry see each other and 'talk' at all?

What do you do?

After you parted ways with Emma and the platform was getting sparse of people —with only a few late trains still running— you learned that the great black dog —purportedly a 'hellhound', if you are to believe the stories— has made another appearance.

What are the signs?

You know that Emma and Kat are set to meet the (possibly demonic) upper-crust elites at The Lanesborough. The hotel has many more rooms than Emma's group can use, so there are other clients in residence, and their famous restaurant and spa have limited openings to the public, but are mainly intended for guest use.

The cheapest rooms are £800 per night. That is a lot, even for your miraculous corporate card. Even a day-pass to the spa will set you back £250, but many say it is well worth it.

Henry was on time.

Somehow, that hurt her more than had he been late. He was never on time for her. Not when they were seeing each other, nor recently, whenever they scheduled to meet somewhere. But today, he was punctual, to the minute. Because it wasn’t about her. It was about them. Henry wanted to make a good impression, he wasn’t going to let this opportunity slide between his fingers. He COULD be punctual. He just wasn’t, because she didn’t matter enough. It stung, but she didn’t let it show it. She just filed it away where all the other Henry-related bruises lived

She wheeled her suitcase out into the lobby herself. A full suitcase, for a two-night stay. It was a little absurd, but Emma liked options. Inside were a few too-revealing club dresses (just in case), the wool sweater and boots for the countryside, casual wear for daytime lounging, and even her favorite pink thong. She didn’t need help with her suitcase, and she certainly didn’t want Sarah to spot him. Letting those two meet would invite all the wrong questions, and Emma was already carrying enough luggage.

The rain was coming down steadily. Henry’s car was already waiting at the curb, wipers swaying from side to side. Predictably, he didn’t get out. He wouldn’t step into the rain for her, not even now. But the trunk did pop open once she opened the front door to the lobby, and Henry watched her from the rearview mirror as she hoisted her suitcase in by herself, hurrying inside before she got too wet.

She was already wearing the emerald green dress he bought her at Harrods under her raincoat, the one that hugged her figure. Tight enough to show her curves, but modest enough to appear respectable. She added black stockings to the outfit, only because Henry said she should. She wanted him to think he had some say in what she wore. Let him feel like he still had influence. That always made him more pliable.

Slidding into the passenger seat, brushing a damp lock of hair from her cheek, she looked at him with a bright and eager smile: "I can’t wait for this weekend!"

"Please don't embarrass me." Henry says, it sounds like he is joking... or meaning to sound like he is joking. It is an important weekend for him.

When you arrive at The Lanesborough, the doorman gets the doors, the footman gets the bags, and the valet gets the car, you don't have to do anything. The receptionist sees you coming and greets you both by name.

"Mr Godfrey, Mrs Harper, welcome. Your room is ready if you want to get settled before lunch. We will have your bags delivered." He hands you each a key.

"Sorry. Did you say 'room'?" Henry asks, seeming a bit panicked by the use of singular.

"Yes, sir?" The receptionist says without any expression more than slight polite enquiry.

What do you do?
May 20, 2025 5:09 pm
"Don’t worry. I promise to behave myself this weekend."
And she would, at least as far as he was concerned. What Henry didn't know, wouldn't hurt him. She had no intention of getting caught snooping around.

***********

Emma’s smile didn’t falter, not even for a heartbeat, but behind it, her mind was racing.
Of course they didn’t book me my own room. Sinclair must have thought she was just Henry’s latest weekend ornament. Why make special arrangements for that?

The idea of sharing a room, let alone a bed, with Henry wasn’t just uncomfortable. It was unmanageable. How could she ever explain sharing a room with another man to David, if he ever found out about this? Let alone sharing a room with her ex-boyfriend? It was impossible.

She couldn’t argue with the receptionist; he was just reading what was on his computer screen, and had no power to fix this. She could go straight to Sinclair and demand another room, but that would make a scene. It would raise eyebrows. Why wasn’t she staying with Henry? Was she not his date? Was there something off about her? She’d be inviting scrutiny from the very people she was trying to observe.

Or she could go home. Back to David. Back to the grey couch and the grocery lists and boring TV and the nothing.

That wasn’t an option either.

It all passed through her in an instant, one swift mental calculus.

"Thank you" she said to the receptionist, turning just slightly toward Henry and wrapping her arm around his elbow "We’ll be on our way up now."
May 20, 2025 5:17 pm
- Emma -

"I'm so sorry about this." Henry whispers to you as you walk. He is clearly thankful that you did not make a fuss, but he also looks more worried about the arrangement than you do. "This was not my idea. You must believe me."

If you make it to the room —the porter following a discrete distance behind— it is large and luxurious, and, despite not being a 'suite', there is a decent sized couch in the sitting area. Henry will give it a meaningful glance while the porter deposits your bags.

What do you do?
May 20, 2025 5:31 pm
She allowed herself a moment to take in the room. Polished wood, thick carpets, tasteful decor. This was only the second time she’s ever stayed in a hotel, and that's counting the cramped, low-budget place they could afford on their honeymoon. This was definitely a step up.

But as soon as the porter left and the door clicked shut, the smile evaporated off her face.

"Let’s get one thing straight" she said as she turned toward Henry, her voice cold and steady "I’m not your girlfriend. So don’t start getting any ideas." she pointed to the couch. "You’re sleeping there. I’m taking the bed"

she kept firing off the rules one after the other:

"No peeking while I’m in the bath. No wandering around in just a towel. Keep your hands to yourself, and your dick in your pants." She took a slow breath "Do that, and we’ll get through this weekend without a single hitch. Fail at any of it, and I'll make you regret it."
May 20, 2025 5:38 pm
- Emma -

Henry has just tipped the porter an eye-watering sum that did not even make the porter blink —being gifted a night in such a hotel could still bankrupt someone in your position— when you unleash on him.

"Yes. Yes. Agreed." He says, glancing at the couch with slight concern. He almost makes a joke that you, too, should refrain from wandering around in a towel... but the hotel's towels would cover even more of you than many of your dresses, and he does not want to suggest he is not taking you seriously.

"I swear, I had no idea 'Sin had done this. I told him we were ... just friends. I will try to get it fixed." He says, sounding earnest.

What do you do?
May 20, 2025 5:59 pm
"Just friends" she repeats, dryly "Right. Because ‘just friends’ go out together for a weekend retreat." She didn’t accuse him of lying. Maybe he did tell Sinclair they were just friends. Maybe Sinclair didn’t believe him. She didn’t particularly care at this point

"You’re going to look pathetic if you go running to Sinclair" she said before he could finish his throught "If you want another room, YOU can arrange for it yourself. AND pay for it. Though honestly, I’m not sure you should."

She steps further into the room and drops her suitcase on the bed, then turns back to him. "Think about it. What looks better for you? That you brought a girl like me here and we’re fucking like animals all weekend, or that I’m just ‘a friend’? What do you think is gonna earn you points with this crowd?" She doesn’t wait for an answer. It would help his standing if people thought he bagged her. But her real reason was that it kept her out of any awkward explanations about why she was here.

"I’m going to the spa" she adds simply, already reaching for her smaller toiletry bag. "I want a massage. A long one." She doesn’t ask him to join her, or pretend like she cared whether he did or not "You can decide what to do in the meantime."

- Emma -

"But... you... I ... we're not ..." Henry splutters having no words to counter your tirade. "It's not my fault." He says forlornly to himself as you leave.

Describe your spa experience.

What do you do?
May 20, 2025 6:44 pm
"No. We're not" The stammering, the helpless, whinning tone of his was like a light switch flipping inside her head. Disgusted. That was the word for it. How did she ever let someone like that have so much power over her? How did she ever find him desirable? He was acting like a six-year-old making excuses. A frightened rabbit. She was a naive teenager when she dated him. She had no idea what real strength looked like. How easy it was to mistake arrogance for composure and true confidence.

She walked away without looking back.

The spa was exactly what she needed. The full body massage helped her relax, and the handsome masseur didn't try to talk to her, which earned him points. She let her thoughts go quiet as his hands worked her body, and once she dressed up, and one cocktail later, she felt warm and lighthearted. Her tension melted, and she practically floated back into their room, the same one she lashed out at him - maybe harder than was necessary. She was angry at the entire setup, being forced to share a room, and took it out on him. And while she didn't exactly regret it (when did she ever?), she was willing to make a peace offering, if only to make their stay together bearable.

Benji is just about to head back down to his lair when he catches the faint scent of old blood. He stops in his tracks and looks around, trying to identify the source.

It’s coming from a ways down the tunnel, away from the fluorescent lights of the platform. He glances at the timetable and sees that the next train isn’t due for another thirteen minutes. He looks around to make sure no one’s watching him and then hops down onto the tracks and makes his way toward the source of smell.

He finds it about twenty metres down the tunnel – a splatter of blood across the tracks. He realises there’s another splatter on the wall a few metres further, and a small puddle on the ground a bit further than that. He dips his fingers into the puddle – the blood is cold and sticky, but clearly not that old—maybe a day or so. He probably would have found it sooner if he’d been spending more time at the station these last few days. He licks his fingers clean as he looks up and down the tunnel, thinking.

At first, he wonders if another vampire might have been hunting in his territory, but this is too messy for a vampire. Too much blood has been wasted.

The trail of blood continues on, past the puddle, although – upon closer investigation—the later traces aren’t so much splatters as prints – pawprints.

Benji stares at the massive bloody pawprints, filled with dread, until he feels the faint tremor in the earth of a train approaching and quickly scurries back to the platform.

**********

Benji knows that he has to do something about the Dog and soon (if people start going missing around Picadilly Circus station it won’t be long before the blame falls on him), but it takes him until the following afternoon/evening to work up the courage. His last encounter with the creature didn’t exactly go well for him, after all, and this time he’s on his own.

The trains run 24/7 on Fridays and Saturdays on the Piccadilly line, which is rather inconvenient, but does at least mean that there’s no point waiting until the early hours of the morning to begin his hunt.

Armed with his sword, he follows the tracks from Piccadilly Circus toward Green Park and Hyde Park Corner, searching for any trace of the hellhound.
OOC:
This seems like a good time to use Let It Out to ‘extend my vampiric senses’ to pick up the hellhound’s trail. Shall I roll?

Emma fished out her phone as she stood in front of the elevator. She did intend to get her massage, but there was another reason she came on this retreat (except enjoying everything the Lanesborough had to offer), and it was time to start setting her plans in motion.

"Hey, have you checked in yet?" she texted Kat, trying to keep the message short and simple, so she won't have any problems google translating her message "I’m heading to the spa now. You should come get a massage with me."
May 23, 2025 4:20 am
Persephone gazed out of a window in her condo, spinning her corporate credit card in her hand. The rain fell, relentlessly. How is all of England not underwater at this point? she wonders. Her eyes wandered to the card and she considered the price tag of the hotel and spa again. I don't actually know what the limit is on this thing, and what's 'too much.' This would be somewhat work-related, after all--investigating possible competition. Hmm...

Then she recalled the advice a venture capitalist gave her about dealing with the FCC: Ask for forgiveness, not permission. And besides, she thought, what are corporations good for if not concentrating wealth? And what is wealth good for if not spending it?

She began to tap on her phone, booking a day at the spa and a night at the hotel. May as well go all in.

The next day, she arrived at the hotel to check in and begin her spa experience. She texted Emma, letting her know that she had arrived.
May 23, 2025 5:45 am
Pers text arrived just as Emma pressed the 'send' button for her message to Kat:

"Perfect timing! I’m just heading down to the spa for a massage now. Grab a bag and come join me"

She slipped the phone back into her handbag just as the elevator dings and the doors opened. She should have changed into something more casual before going down to get a massage, but she didn't feel staying in 'their' room for a minute longer. It wasn’t like she’d be wearing the dress for much longer anyway. And she was sure the spa would have a robe she could slip into afterward for the walk back upstairs.

A few train-dodges later you are past Hyde Park Corner. You have not found any more blood, it seems that one unfortunate victim was in the wrong place at the wrong time, maybe. Other signs that a 'dog' has been active around here increase the further you get from Piccadilly, they pick up a lot past Down Street station —though you are among the few who even remember it existed. There are other tunnels in the area, disused since 'the war' —the last one these short-lived people really have any recollection of— but they don't seem to be the focus of the dog's ramblings.

Once you pass Hyde Park Corner the number of signs start to drop off again, that seems to be the focus?

You have neither seen, heard, or smelt hide nor hair of the dog itself. Just leavings on the tracks. Maybe it has some way of getting out? But where would it go?

What do you do?

Circe has made plans with Thom and Anne —the barristers— over the weekend, so you don't need to fret about leaving her alone. But do you tell her are getting a room at a hotel just the other side of the park?

The Lanesborough assure you that the spa is complementary for guest, so you don't get to push the boundaries of your corporate card too far... unless you want to (rooms go up to over £4k per night [booking link]).

On check-in, the receptionist does not recognise you (unless you sent them a picture) —so Emma's situation [ref] is special— but they are immensely polite, treating you like royalty —though maybe they treat royalty differently, you don't see any right now, but wouldn't be surprised— taking your bags, and seeing to your every need.

Emma, it seems, is heading for the spa.

What do you do?

Maybe it is the 'fight' with your ex, or the dry air from the industrial strength dehumidifiers the hotel uses to keep the woes of the outside world outside, but you are feeling a little warm and congested as you leave your room. A good nose-blow might help... though don't ask for that from Kat, you might get the wrong sort of blow...

Kat has not answered, if she has checked in she may be... busy...

The spa don't blink an eye at your arriving dressed as they are —they might not blink, but they do admire— and have hangers and racks for every form of wrinkle-free storage you could imagine. Clean, soft towels and robes are provided.

They offer private massages, as well as couple's massages, Persephone has just texted that she is also a guest in the hotel if you want a couple's room. The pool looks great too, not too full with everyone having spent the last few weeks wet, but heated to the perfect temperature.

What do you do?
May 23, 2025 11:36 am
Emma blamed the flush in her cheeks not on the hotel’s overzealous climate control, but on herself, or more precisely, her own lack of restraint. She let loose on Henry. He hadn’t exactly deserved it. He wasn't the one who booked one room for the two of them, after all. Maybe she should say something nice when she got back to the room. Or not. She was still too angry at the entire situation.

Her tension began to melt once she stepped into the spa. The air was warmer, with a herbal scent she couldn't place, but instantly liked. She caught a glimpse of the pool walking in. She hadn’t planned on swimming (the barely-there thong was packed for other reasons), but maybe a quick dip tomorrow wouldn’t hurt.

After being greeted, she started filling out the intake form. Being in perfect health, she scrawled through it quickly, only half reading the questions. With that handled, she took the offered robe and stepped into the women's changing room, slipping out of her dress with care and hanging it carefully. No need to wrinkle it before the gathering later this evening.
OOC:
Emma will book the couple's massage, if Pers end up joining her

Mortals are not especially observant but Benji doesn’t think a hellhound could stroll through a busy tube station unnoticed. The creature must have some other way out of the Underground. Concentrating his search around Hyde Park Corner and the surrounding disused passages, he searches for another path to the surface.
May 24, 2025 4:25 am
However the fallout of the little scene she put on at the cafe plays out, Persephone and Circe enjoyed the rest of their shopping day together. When Persephone learns that Circe has more than enough to keep her occupied over the weekend, she simply tells her sister that she will be away of the weekend with Emma, but still available by phone. Not a lie, but not a complete disclosure either.

At the hotel, Persephone absolutely allows the staff to treat her as she believes she should always be treated, deep down. She does spring for an upgrade from a Deluxe Room to a Junior Suite, for a mere 500 pounds. She drops her bags off in the suite, takes a moment to enjoy the lovely view of Belgravia, and heads down to the spa to meet up with Emma.

It is strange that such a large dog could roam around the tunnels without being noticed by BTP (British Transport Police) or maintenance workers. Surely someone will have mentioned it? You would have heard, right? And, the last time you encountered it, it seemed pretty 'at home', not like it had just been summoned down here. What it is eating is a question as well, if it had been eating people, you would surely have heard about that, that is a direct danger to your existence here. It seems there may be some larger conspiracy at work?

Do you find any signs such a 'larger conspiracy'? If so: What?

There aren't any maintained tube lines heading north —not since Green Park behind you. Still, your nose suggests that is the way to go. Maybe you need to break into the service tunnels on that side?

What do you do?
May 24, 2025 3:25 pm
Emma was just finishing tying the sash of her robe when Persephone walked into the changing room. She glanced up at her, a quick smile crossing her face: "You have no idea how glad I am to see you here"

She didn't mean just the spa, but the whole weekend. There were so many people she didn't know and couldn't trust around; it was good to have someone she could count on. She didn't ask her what, exactly, she was doing here. She assumed she had her own reasons, probably tied to whatever deal she made. "I booked us a couple’s massage" she continued, and picked up her towel "Figured we could use some rest and relaxation, before whatever they have planned for the evening"
May 24, 2025 4:27 pm
Persephone entered, looking tired and ready for the spa. She smiled at Emma and said, "Oh, that sounds lovely! Thank you! And it will give us a chance to catch up. Well, about some things at least." She quickly undressed, though she turned away when she removed her top, trying not to show the bite wound on her shoulder. She touches it gingerly and sighs.

Once robed and ready, she turned back to Emma and said, "OK, let's go! And you need to tell me everything about the people hosting this event, who will be in attendance, and so on. Oh! And how are you and David?"
May 24, 2025 4:58 pm
"David’s fine" she said as she walked alongside her through the softly lit hallway "They got him running around the city in the rain all week. He's exhausted." unfortunately, there is little she could tell her about any of the people hosting the event. The only person she knew by name was 'Sinclair'. And while he did invite her, and she therefore assumed he was one of the higher-ups, she didn't know if he was the one actually calling the shots "I barely know anyone here, to be honest. The only reason I got invited is because of Henry"

Once in the massage room, she waited for the masseuses to step out, then calmly shrugged off her robe without hesitation. She wasn't bothered by Persephone's presence, and made no effort to cover herself up, as she folded her robe neatly and placed it over the bench before climbing up onto the table and lying face down. She tugged the sheet up just enough to cover her backside, then rested her head on her arms

"Sinclair put me in the same room as Henry, in fact" she mentioned "Not exactly ideal. But," she paused for a moment "it does have its benefits."
May 24, 2025 5:19 pm
Persephone nodded in understanding when Emma disclosed that she knew little of the hosts. Her head tilted slightly at Henry’s name, however, followed by her eyes going wide.

"Henry? Like, Henry Henry? Your ex? Wait, what? He’s in London? You’re talking to him again? And wait, what do you mean benefits??!! Like friends with?!?! Girl! Spill it!"
May 24, 2025 5:35 pm
"Well, I mean… he’s obscenely wealthy. And handsome" she glanced over at Pers, a teasing smile on her lips "I may have let him take me to dinner. And a little shopping. And now a weekend retreat." She rolled onto her side and propped her head up with one arm to look at her "But no, I’m not sleeping with him." she paused for a moment "Well, technically, I am sleeping with him tonight. You know what I mean..."

She settled back down onto her stomach and closed her eyes "What's with that Zhiyu guy?" she changed the subject "What did he want with you?"
May 24, 2025 6:43 pm
Persephone did not let this go so easily. Her eyebrows arched and her mouth opened in mock pearl-clutching shock. She smiled and said, "Oh my god Em! You have a sugar daddy? Two if you count David! Wow. You always could pull..."

Then a look of confusion and concern crossed her face. She asked, "So wait, does David even know about Henry? What did you tell him you were doing this weekend? And does Henry know he's a strictly Platonic sugar daddy? Because in my experience they all think that their sugar will translate to sex eventually. And they're usually right."
May 24, 2025 7:17 pm
Emma let out a soft snort "What Henry assumes is his problem," she propped herself back on one arm, breast slipping slightly into view "If he chooses to believe there’s more going on, that’s on him." she didn't feel even a little bit guilty over stringing him along "Besides, he owes me for all the shit he put me through back then. The mind games. The lies. The other girls. The way he left. So if he wants to spend a fortune trying to impress me, I say let him. It's the least he can do." she didn't answer any of her questions about David, however. Maybe because there was a little bit of guilt about hiding it from him, though knowing Emma, she probably has a way to justify that too
May 24, 2025 8:55 pm
Persephone’s eyebrows raised and she shut her mouth. She nodded and said, "Hmm! Ok then! Well, I know I live in a glass house, so I won’t be judging your choices." She was definitely judging Emma’s choices.

She nodded in agreement with one element and said, "Yeah, to hell with Henry. He deserves it. But… then she glanced at Emma and, in a softer voice, she asked, "Does David?"

Benji picks up signs of human activity — scent and tracks, mostly— near the entrance to one of the service tunnels, as well as a sharp uptick in traces of the Dog. Someone coming down to feed the Dog maybe? He doesn’t know enough about technology to tell if the security cameras in this section of the tunnel have been tampered with, but he supposes they could have been.
A locked metal gate blocks the entrance to this particular service tunnel. He could just force it open— snap the lock, or the gate off its hinges, whichever gives first— but that will make a lot of noise and he doesn’t want to draw attention to himself… After a bit of thought, he braces his shoulder against the gate and waits for the next train to pass, hoping that the deafening roar of the train will mask the noise of the metal gate being wrenched off its hinges.
May 25, 2025 12:07 am
- Benji -

The gate pops off its hinges, any noise it might have made completely masked by the sound of the train. This is not the way the dog or its potential feeders were getting to the tracks, the dog could not navigate a lock and key, and this gate has not been used in a long time. However, the tunnel on the other side seems like the right direction, there is more scent of people, a single person or many you can not tell, what with all the train-wafted-body-odor being forced through these tunnels from behind you.

You don't get the feeling anyone is living down here ... aside from the dog, maybe, and even that seems less like it lives here than that it comes down here a few times a day. This is just a feeling, though, based on familiarity with un-lived-in spaces, you could turn out to be wrong in this estimation... especially if what lives down here is not human.

What do you do?
May 25, 2025 2:17 am
Benji continues following the tunnel, keeping an eye out not just for the dog, but also for any sort of clue as to what exactly’s going on down here. There’s obviously more to this than a runaway hellhound.

He takes care to move as quietly as possible, hoping that if he encounters anyone, or anything, down here, he will hear them coming well before they hear him.
May 25, 2025 3:22 am
"Oh, get real" a bit miffed, she sat upright on the massage table, rather than continuing the conversation lying down. The sheet shifted with her, now only draped loosely across her hips. She knew Persephone was bi, and exactly what kind of effect her nudity could have. But she didn't like what Pers was implying here, and she wasn't above using every advantage to make her stop "If I told David about every man who tried to get into my pants, that would be all we would ever talk about. Should I keep a running list for him? The guys at the gym who offer to ‘spot’ me in the locker room? My publisher, who thinks a book deal comes with dinner and a hotel key? Every random creep in the office, or the men at the nightclubs who buy me a drink?"

She locks her eyes with hers "David knows I'm always been approached. This isn’t some new thing. And I haven't done anything wrong"

She cooled off a bit, as she tried to explain herself "You know I didn’t have anything growing up. I thought you, of all people, would get that. Maybe even support me." Her voice dipped a bit "If you insist on being like that, maybe I shouldn't bother telling you anything next time."
May 25, 2025 6:34 pm
Persephone was taken aback at Emma's response. I touched a nerve apparently. Duly noted. Ah well, it's too bad. David seemed nice. As Persephone reflected for a moment, she realized she may have been 'judging,' but she also recognized she might do the same thing, to be honest. Not out of any kind of upbringing of scarcity, but simply due to her newfound sexual aggressiveness.

Persephone sat up and laughed. She turned to Emma and looked down appreciatively at her form and said, "My dear! I would likely do the same. Ha! In fact I DO do the same. Just yesterday, in fact, I flirted very aggressively with a woman I knew was a closeted lesbian, just so I could get an inside track on my next work project. And guess what? I think it worked. We're meeting for coffee on Monday. And as far as she knows, it's just personal, not business. But honey, it's always business."

Persephone looked down once more at Emma's body and then laid back down so that the masseuse could continue her work. Once more she found herself surprised at her fittingness for her new 'line of work.' She frowned slightly and thought, Am I... Am I a bad person? Maybe I was tainted even before that demon came around... Maybe that's why I was chosen. Ugh... Irritated with her conscience, she set such thoughts aside and and relaxed into the massage.

That was the second time in thirty minutes she snapped at someone. It wasn’t like her, which only proved to show how off-balance she was over this entire setup. Pers didn’t deserve it. Neither did Henry, for that matter. You would have better luck squeezing water from a rock than extracting an apology from Emma, but inwardly, she was chastising herself for letting her emotions get the better of her.

Her posture eased when Pers started to relate her own story. She listened without a trace of judgment in her face, though inwardly, she thought their situations were hardly the same. Henry was filthy rich. Showering her with gifts wasn’t going to make a dent in his lifestyle. That poor woman Pers was seducing though; she was going to convince her to sign her soul away. Condemn her to hell. But just like being stuck in the same room with her ex for the weekend, this, too, was something beyond her powers to fix. She wasn’t going to start a fight with Pers over it.

Lying back on her stomach, and resting her cheek against the cradle of her arms, she closed her eyes and teased her, just a little, to signal the truce "Is she hot, at least?"

She didn’t say another word once the masseuses returned. She allowed herself to settle and enjoy herself as they started working on her shoulders. The tension was melting away, and soon, she had trouble remembering what she was so angry about.

There is no one down here except the rats... and even those are not in abundance. Maybe the dog is eating them? You see a cluster of three small, rat-like, shapes scampering along ahead of you, just at the fringe of your vision.

What do you do?

Benji squints at the rat-like shapes scampering ahead. There’s something strangely familiar about them… He picks up his pace to catch up with them.

Emma practically floated down the hallway. The tension from earlier had all but disappeared, and she felt completely calm and serene. Her skin still carried a sheen of aromatic oils, and the robe that clung softly to her body was tied loosely at the waist by a single lazy knot that already started to loosen. The neckline was deeper than any of her club dresses, the top parting wide enough to show the top of her thighs and the curve leading to them. One wrong turn and everything would fall open, but she didn't seem to notice, or care.

"Hi" she said softly as she entered the room, in contrast to the cold indifference in which she left it "How have you been?"

Indeed they do look familiar.. but most people could not tell one rat from another. These three also seem to be tracking you... from in front, but still, they are moving along with you... but that's crazy-talk. As you speed up, they speed up too, rats are fast, but this is ridiculous-speed. You could catch them if you really wanted to, though.

You receive a few scandalised looks —and quite a few more looks that have nothing to do with scandal— as you traipse around the hotel in a revealing gown. 'Society people' are bound to talk.

"You missed lunch." Henry says, a bit belligerently. He seems to have been drinking, and is depressed. "People asked where you were. We're supposed to go to the spa now." He actually did mention something about such a timetable, but, in his usual, controlling manner, he did not supply quite enough detail for you to make plans on your own.

You could take in another spa visit, but this part of the afternoon is suddenly free. If left unsupervised, you suspect Henry will skip the spa and head for the bar.

Is Henry much of a drinker? What does the booze do to his personality?

What do you do?
May 26, 2025 7:38 am
"I’m sorry." She wasn’t, not really. But she wanted to sooth him, not fight him. She was still loose and pleasantly detached, and all she wanted now was to bask in the comfort of their suite, not waste this feeling on another argument.

She moved into the room, not missing the glass of half-finished whiskey, and the fine white dusting around the hotel key card on the table. It was Henry’s usual mix of coke and alcohol, a habit he picked up during the long nights working at BlackRock, before he went independent. It made him sharper, meaner, and restless in ways alcohol alone never could, which explained why he accused her the moment she walked into the room.

"I’ll make it up to you. I promise" she didn’t regret missing lunch, but it was important to her to keep Henry happy with her. The previous day shopping at Harrods, plus the indulgence of staying in a hotel she could never afford on her own, made her appreciate the practical benefits of their relationship. Moving past the bed, she purposely not bothered to adjust her robe that barely held together as she moved, offering him a glimpse of bare thigh, a deep curve of cleave, in a calculated kind of neglect.

"Did you eat anything?" she feigned concern for him as she picked up the room service menu "we could stay here, in the room, and rest a bit before dinner"

She wasn’t interested in going down to the spa again. She was feeling so perfect right now as it was. Besides, massages were hardly a group activity. No one was expecting to see them there. The real social gathering would be over dinner later this evening, where she would do her very best to make a good impression.

Curious, Benji stops and rummages through his pockets in search of food. He finds a stale crust of bread that he took from Jacob’s flat the other day to try to feed to Snowy and, dropping into a crouch, holds it out for the rats.

"What are you going?" Henry demands, sounding more weary than aggressive. "You are a married woman, for goodness sake."

You have no doubt that your married status would not stop him from ... corrupting your marriage bed, if you made the move, especially with the coke and whiskey combination, but he is not pushing that agenda and seemed genuinely mortified by the room-mixup.

Your ... well, they are not 'flirty'... let's call them 'seductive' actions are making it very hard for Henry to maintain his composure. He is feeling very unfairly put upon. You made it very clear nothing was going to happen, but now you are prancing around, almost naked, and suggesting 'staying in the room' and 'resting' before dinner. He does not know how to interpret that common ... single entendre.

"I checked. The bar closes at 1am." He says, which is a bit of a strange non sequitur, but maybe he was looking for some way out of the room tonight.

"Married women eat too, you know." She feigned innocence. She knew what he was implying, but pretending not to only made it more fun. She climbed onto her bed and stretched out, head resting against the pillow as her robe rode dangerously high, revealing even more of the glint of oiled skin beneath.

She enjoyed watching him try to stay composed, trying to reconcile her declaration of innocence with the temptation she offered. Watching him struggle gave her quite a thrill. Let him suffer for a bit. It was a bit cruel of her, but something inside her took glee in seeing him so desperate for something he can’t have – just like he made her feel when he broke up with her.

Reaching for the phone, she dialed reception, her eyes meeting his as the call connected. "You sure you don’t want anything?"

Emma lets out a soft, delighted chuckle after the door slammed shut. This was even better than she imagined! It was almost too easy. Once she got over the thrill, she finally placed her order and hung up the call. She stretched for a while longer on the bed, savoring the moment, until her eyes finally rested on Henry’s luggage.

With mischief in her eyes, she slipped off the bed and crouched down, fingers running over the zipper before pulling it open. She wasn’t expecting any secrets there, mostly practical things, but she might as well have a look while he was gone.

Benji cocks his head, intrigued. "Are you… following me?" It seems a bit ridiculous, but there are wizards who can control animals and creatures who can change shape — the fey, for instance. He’s been spied on by a lot of different factions lately… Perhaps these rats are just another set of eyes sent to keep tabs on him by someone after Lizabeth’s lamp? "Come over here, will you? I won’t hurt you."

Henry's luggage confirms that he probably knows nothing about any cult activity. There is nothing at all in there that would hint at cult or demon involvement.

He also does not have any condoms, which either suggests he was planning on not needing anything like that, or was relying on you to handle that side of things. His storm-out kinda suggest the former.

You see the clothing items you 'bought for him', as well as other essentials.

Is there anything at all in there that surprises you?

When you ask the rats if they are following you, they seem to shrug, not exactly a 'yes', but not a 'no', either.

At your words: 'come over here', they immediately scamper over to you, looking up at you attentively. One places a hesitant paw on your trouser-leg, as though seeking permission to climb up.

What do you do?
May 26, 2025 10:59 am
Her interest in his luggage waned after she confirmed there was nothing there tying him to the cult. Still, knowing he was completely in the dark about the true nature of the retreat was valuable in its own way. No condoms barely registered beyond a fleeting thought, that he hadn’t planned for anything to happen during the weekend. If he did, he wouldn’t have taken the chance that might not have any herself.

It hardly mattered. She had no intention of taking things that far either. This was never about seducing him into her bed. It was all about shifting the power dynamic, throwing him off balance, taking back a little control.

She packed up everything the way she found it, then waited for her lunch to arrive, lazily lounging around the room, scrolling through her phone as she lay in bed.

There was still no reply from Kat, which was a bit annoying. She needed to figure out where exactly she and Sinclair were staying if she was going to break into their room unnoticed at some point this weekend. She planned on asking her for some aspirin, or maybe use some other excuse to knock on her door, but she needed her to text her back first.

Oh well.

She stretched on her bed, and dozed off for a bit, before finally heading to take a shower. She was in no hurry. The weekend didn’t officially start, and there was still plenty of time to see what this cult was really about.

When you come out of the shower, Henry is not around, so his rule against towels can be ignored... you more than violated that with the robe, anyway.

Kat has finally replied. Apparently 'Sin 'took her phone away' (or that is how you interpret her response), probably because she was playing on it non-stop. Her chain of messages is the predictable, badly formed English, and boils down to: "Where were you? Missed you at lunch. Had a massage with 'Sin, missed you at the spa. 'Sin is —finally— out. I am bored. Where are you?".

It does not look like you will get to exercise your excuse-muscles to get into their room.

Emma stepped out of the bathroom, with steam curling around her, wrapped in nothing but a towel. All the rules she set up were for Henry, not her. Besides ,he was conveniently out of the room, so there was no reason to dress up in the humid confines of the bathroom.

She took her time selecting something comfortable to wear (she will only put her pretty dress on before they actually leave for dinner), and once dressed, she stretched back on the bed and started checking her phone again, happy to see the string of texts from Kat. ‘Sin turned out to be a controlling bastard, for taking away Kat’s phone like that. She filed the information in her mind, to remember who exactly she was dealing with.

"Come up to my room. We can pass the time before dinner" she quickly typed in response. She could easily ask Kat which room she was staying in once she came over. She was also eager to know what Kat would be wearing this evening, if she knew anything about the rest of the weekend’s agenda, and more importantly – what gossip she heard about the club’s members. She intended to get all of it out of her before the night truly begins, no matter how difficult it was to cross the language barrier.

Kat shows up at your room shortly after you message her, she is wearing a cute, comfy, fluffy, track-suit (someone should warn her about Russian stereotypes), which looks good on her, but still, she probably plans to change before dinner.

She looks around the room appreciatively. "Where Henry?" She asks, possibly concerned about why you are not spending any time together.

May 26, 2025 1:01 pm
Emma wasn’t sure what Kat assumed about her and Henry’s relationship, or what would be advantageous to let her assume. Kat knew she was married to David. She has been to her home. But she wasn’t sure she could trust her to keep a secret. She couldn’t tell her she was investigating the cult, not knowing what she could potentially share with Sinclair.

Best to play it safe, and imply she was having an affair with Henry, without outright lying about it.

"I think I wore him out" she gave her a suggestive smile, then, smoothly, changed the subject.

Picking her new emerald green dress from the hanger, she held it against her body, tilting her head slightly as she examined herself in the mirror. "So?" she glanced back at Kat. "What do you think of my new dress? Would this be a good look for dinner tonight?"

"'Sin as well." Kat agrees. "But he must do 'organising'. 'Very secret surprise'." She says in a mock whisper.

"You really like it?" she ran her fingers against the soft fabric. She wasn’t sure what would be the dress code for tonight. Henry was no help when she pressed him for details. So she decided to play it safe, and she was genuinely relieved when Kat approved. "Good!" she smiled. She didn’t want to wear something scandalous to a high society dinner, and the dress was perfect; pretty, complimenting to her figure, without being too tight, or showing too much skin.

She was intrigued about the ‘very secret surprise’ Sinclair was working on. She was tempted to press for details, but caught herself before opening her mouth. She needed to be more subtle about it.

"Henry didn’t share much with me about the weekend’s plans" she said as she adjusted the dress on the hanger and returned it back to the closet "Do you know what else they have lined up?"

Persephone lounged and lingered in the spa long after Emma had left. She opted for the full treatment after the massage: facial exfoliation followed by hydrating mask; body scrub followed by a mud bath; a mani-pedi with herbal and paraffin treatments; acupuncture and aroma therapy; and ending with a crystal bowl session and yogic meditation session. She wraps it up with a trip to the sauna, where she sees several others enjoying the relaxing heat.

Only then does she remember why she is here; she is looking for people with the infernal taint to them, with the hopes that she might learn more about demonic politics and, perhaps, learn how to free Kat. If she happens to score some points for her patron along the way, all the better.
May 27, 2025 5:03 am
"Well, alright, come along then," says Benji, allowing the rat to climb up onto his shoulder. He’s glad for the company, even if it turns out that the rats are spies after all. Kat shrugs dismissively. "Some 'team game'?" She suggests, giving you the impression she was not too bothered to ask questions and is guessing from tidbits overheard and only partially understood. This seems to coincide with Henry's mention of 'icebreakers' after dinner/after dark.

There may have been an older man and woman at the spa who exhibited a hint of taint, but they were not open to being approached at that time, and are gone now.

If your explorations take you to the other logical 'public place', you might end up at the restaurant and bar. There is a man sitting at the bar, looking down in the dumps and also in his cups. There is a similar whiff to that which you got off of Kat, he is not bound to a demon, but there is something about him that suggest contact, even if unwitting.

Of course, they wouldn’t trust Kat with actual details. And Kat didn’t seem to care enough to ask either.

Guess I’ll just have to wait and see.

"I do love games" she smiled at her "And surprises" Both were true. She had always had a penchant for excitement. The unknown, the thrill of something (a little) dangerous. It was that same pull that had drawn her into the supernatural world to begin with.

"What about the people here?" she asked, trying to keep it causul "Do you know any of them?" she paused briefly, before adding "How long have you been involved with Sinclair, anyway?"
May 27, 2025 11:40 am
Persephone underwent the complete treatment in the spa, the likes of which she had never experienced. Once she'd completed her post-sauna shower, she returned to her room and dressed, did her hair and make-up, and put on an outfit, a black sleeveless cocktail party dress from Oscar de la Renta, with a matching clutch purse.

Descending to the bar, Persephone entered and approached the bar to order a drink. Noticing the whiff of the infernal on one man, she slid onto the stool next to him and ordered a Van Winkle Old Fashioned. Glancing over, she suddenly realized it was Henry next to her. She would not have recognized him, perhaps, had she not been thinking of him earlier that day--he was rooming with Emma, and the dour look of the man confirmed it. Well, that answers my question of whether they are or aren't.

She takes a breath and then plays the surprise. "Henry, is that you? It's me, Persephone! From grad school!"

"Also me." Kat agrees about 'games', though she looks less enthused by 'surprises'.

"Two weeks?" She posits about how long she has known 'Sin, and she does not know any of the others any more than you do, she met them that one time before today, same as you, and did not know 'Sin for much longer.

Is anyone else going to be at this retreat? Who? Or is it just the six of you? (Plus some 'behind the scenes' facilitator.)

May 27, 2025 1:41 pm
"Only two weeks?" she was surprised to hear they only met each other that recently. She decided against asking how exactly they met, mostly because it was pretty obvious. Kat likely advertised her ‘services’ online, and Sinclair had the money to indulge himself.

Kate didn’t know much about anything, but there was still some information she was party to:

"How many people were around at lunch today? Or at the spa?"
she asked casually as she took a seat next to the table – the same one with the traces of Coke on it "Any other women our age? Or is it just the two of us?"
OOC:
Let’s keep the gathering intimate. Only the "inner circle" of the gentlemen’s club are in attendance at the retreat - the real bona fide devil worshippers, and a few (or one?) new prospects, like Henry. I think thirteen is a nice, inauspicious number (666 would be too many 😉 ) , with the only other woman being Charlotte Pembroke. We can leave the other NPCs (the one who weren’t at the dinner) in the background, unnamed unless we need them later.

"Dyu-zhi-na?" she tried to mimic the word, glancing at Kat for approval. Hanging out with her was paying off at least in one way - she was picking up Russian, bit by bit. "I really messed up, didn’t I? I didn’t realize lunch was that important" she added a soft sigh, for effect "I really do owe Henry for this one"

There was another worry that surfaced in the back of her mind. Only two women their age, in a group that size? She hadn’t expected that ratio. Why were she and Kat invited, anyways? If none of the other men brought dates, then their presence here wasn't some sort of whim. And that worried her.

"He should be back by now" she said after picking up her phone and checking the time "If he’s going to shower and get ready for dinner…" She considered calling him, just to make sure he wasn't up to anything stupid, but stopped herself*. He was a big boy, and she wasn't his mother. Instead, she set the phone back down and turned to Kat again, searching for a distraction "I was thinking of going clubbing next week. It has been a while. Feel like joining me?"

"'Persephone'? 'From grad school'? Of course. How have you been?" Henry says slowly, he is more than a bit drunk, and a little high, and is wracking his brain to remember if he slept with you in grad school, he is sure he would have remembered ... so probably not? He is also trying to place the accent, television having democratised 'American' for so many people.

"I was just telling Richard ..." He indicates the bar tender, Ricardo, who seems more than eager to make space for you to take over listening to this tale of woe. "... my bitch of an ex girlfriend has wormed her way into my affairs, and now is acting like we are having an affair, and we are not even having an affair, she is married, but she is being such a bitch, and is playing all slutty and dressing all slutty, and telling me to not wear a towel, and saying things that make it real hard..."

Henry seems to realise he is spouting his relationship troubles to the world at large —really only the inattentive bar tender and yourself— and that that is a turn-off. Somewhere in his rant he may have mentioned that his ex was all for 'pretending he was sleeping with her, to help his prospects, isn't she full of herself...' but he was not keen on that idea, and seems oddly offended by it.

"Quite right." He agrees with focusing on him rather than his ex. "Ima doing well. Very successful." He says with no appreciation in his voice for those 'empty facts'. "I'm actually pledging a 'secret society', you know, very hush-hush, don't tell anyone." He stage whispers this last part, leaning in and wafting alcohol fumes at you.

"You staying here?" He asks, looking around and remembering something that has been bothering him. The bar closes at 1am and will kick him out, and the sleeping arrangement in his room are ... less than stellar. He is pondering the endlessly delightful possibilities of staying with you instead, though you don't know this specific added motivation for such an arrangement, his 'availability' is clear.

You can't be sure they understood 'hellhound' or 'master', but, even while playing the fool, they are keeping an eye out ... or a nose, as the case may be, for signs of these things you are hunting. As you pass an unassuming tiled stairway up, their heads turn and they glare in that direction.

Perhaps he could ask Byron if he’s seen the hellhound roaming about? He wishes he’d had a chance to get a copy of Emma’s book for him…

It is getting dark by the time you emerge from the tunnels, so the number of people about is thinning out rapidly —not that there were ever many folks wandering around the park in the rain— but you do still get some strange looks, what with your coat off and rats upon your back.

Did you break the lock/gate/hinges separating the tunnels from the park? Or how did you get out?

Byron looks down at you, if he is puzzled by you having animals crawling upon you, he does not 'show' it. Who is he to comment, he has pigeon poop all over him... or, less than normal, actually, the rain both keeps the poor pigeons away and has washed him clean(er). He 'looks' longingly at the entrance to the park, across the road that has cut him off from it. "And there are rumours of a beast that lurks in the dark." He sounds more enthused by the possibility of a monster nearby than you have 'heard' from him so far, you get the impression he misses such stories.

Though she reveled in making Henry storm out, she was starting to feel a little bit concerned. It had been hours now, and there was still no word from him. She checked the time and frowned. Even if he showed up this second, he would still barely have time to shower and change. The smart clothes she picked out for him were still folded in his suitcase, where they would probably stay, at least this evening.

So much for making a good impression...

Despite everything, she didn’t want him to screw this up. Sighing to herself, she picked up her phone and typed a quick message, deliberately trying to make it sound soft

"Hey. Dinner’s starting soon. You alright?"

She was relieved when the message showed up as 'read' not long after. At least he wasn't lying in a ditch somewhere. But when the minutes dragged on, it became clear that he wasn't going to text her back.

Fine!

If he wants to make a fool of himself, that’s his choice. She wasn't going to do the same.

She pulled her evening dress from the closet, and laid it across the bed. Since he didn't bother going up to their room, she took her time undressing, enjoying the fact she didn't have to lock herself in the bathroom for it. She remembered Kat hinted at 'games' tonight; one of the few tidbits of information she could get from her. She wasn't going to risk twisting an ankle in whatever entertainment Sin concocted for them this evening, so she swapped her high heels for a classic pair of black Oxford flats: simple, elegant, and easy to move in.

She tied her long blonde hair into a sleek ponytail, leaving a few golden strands to frame her face, then added a delicate gold necklace to break the neckline. After touching up her lipstick, she stopped to appraise her reflection in the mirror. It was exactly right; polished, tasteful, but still alluring, without being overtly sexual.

Satisfied, she smiled at her reflection, slipped her phone in her purse, and stepped out the door.

She was going to the Wine Cellar. Alone.

At a glance, you suspect The Wine Cellar more comfortable seats eight or ten, but five seats are placed on each long side plus one each at the head and foot of the table. That is twelve, one fewer than Kat indicated were planned for at lunch, but also the number that were at lunch.

You might wonder if they excluded you for missing that, but both Reginald and Charlotte Pembroke —seated at opposite ends of the long side— greet you warmly, asking after your health and showing concern that you missed out earlier. They indicate the chair reserved for you, so you are not the one intended to be missing tonight.

Where do they seat you? Who are your neighbors? As is the tradition for dinner partied of old: You are not seated next to people you know well (so not Henry or Kat, neither of whom are here yet).

"I do not know the details." Byron says loftily, still a little put out that he is excluded from such goings-on. "Near the paths, I believe? Other side of the roses, maybe?"

Emma led with an apology for missing lunch. She didn’t actually care about inconveniencing anyone, but she was learning that a well placed "sorry" could be just as disarming as one of her smiles. "It’s lovely to see you both again" she added "Thank you for having me, I've really been looking forward to this retreat. The place is just beautiful."

They directed her to her seat, but before she could reach for her chair a handsome man in his thirties, with sharp eyes and a perfectly trimmed goatee, rose and pulled it out for her. "Thank you" she gave him a genuine smile, looking at him with a hint of interest. "I’m Emma Harper"

Real shame he's a devil worshipper. Such a waste.

She turned to give a polite nod to the other man on her right, a distinguished, bespectacled man with hair dyed black and silvery temples, before turning her attention back to the younger man who pulled the chair for her.

"You look simply ravishing, my dear." Charlotte comments. You might notice that she, too, is wearing 'practical shoes' as part of her 'casual but immensely expensive' outfit. You might not want to acknowledge this in front of him, but Henry was right about the jodhpurs and tweed.

Charlotte looks around for Henry, frowning slightly at your seeming separation, but saying nothing.

"William Burke." The man holding your chair says, he seems to have picked up on your appreciation and is feeling pretty good about himself and the seating arrangements. "And what do you do?" He enquires, showing more interest in yourself than the others at these gatherings.

A little while later 'Sin arrives with Kat on his arm. She did not get the hint about 'games' and is wearing her usual high-heals and short skirt. They are seated, separated and intersperse, with the other guests, there is only one seat left, Henry's.

Persephone smiles, knowing she has the fly in her web. She takes Henry's arm and allows him to lead her--for now.

She had arrived at the bar ready for the evening, so she need not stop by her room to change. She stays on his arm, smiling at others like the good arm candy he thinks her to be. All the while, though, she is scanning the room, sniffing for the infernal, and listening to the hushed conversations around her.

It occurs to her that her arrival on Henry's arm might upset Emma, or at least confuse her. Ah well, I'll deal with that later. After all, Emma didn't formally invite her to this affair, so how else was she supposed to gain access?
Jun 1, 2025 4:24 am
"I’m a writer" she said, without elaborating. She felt warmth spread inside her when he inquired about her. Sin never bothered to. She wouldn’t tell him more than that, of course, instead redirecting to him and asking him what he did for a living, but she was pleased that someone was interested in her, like she always was.

Then the door opened, and Henry walked in, with Persephone on his arm, and she froze mid-sentence.

For a heartbeat, the air left her lungs.

She was sitting on her bed. Waiting for Henry’s car to round the corner. She remembered the flash of headlights. Jeany was in the front seat..... She was in his room. They were kissing. His hand slipped where it shouldn’t have. When she pulled away, he told her that "Maybe he’ll go find someone who actually likes him"..... She has been waiting in her room for hours. She texted him, so many times. Nothing. Her mind was already assuming the worst. That he crashed his car driving to pick her up. That he was lying in a ditch somewhere.....

Suddenly, she was no longer a confident, accomplished, sexy young woman who could melt men’s hearts with a smile. She was fifteen again, sobbing quietly into her tear-soaked pillow so her poor mother wouldn’t hear her from across the hall.

He was supposed to be with her. Everyone knew he was supposed to be with her.

It was like being slapped in the face. A public humiliation. She was disposable. She was always disposable.

If you don’t put out, someone else will.

She could feel a lump forming in her throat. Her nose began to feel congested, and it wasn’t from the ‘dry air from an industrial strength dehumidifiers the hotel uses to keep the woes of the outside world outside’.

She wanted to get up and leave the room, but how could she, when everyone were already there, and Henry and Persephone blocking the entrance? So instead she turned her head slightly and looked at William with a tight, artificial smile.

Don’t let them see you cry. Don’t let them see you cry. Don’t let them see you cry...

"Oh yes? Anything I would have read?" William asks after merely glancing at Henry and his entrance with Persephone. You can't be sure if he noticed your reaction and is providing a polite distraction —surely he knows you were meant to be 'with Henry' at lunch— or if he is just genuinely interested in you, or if he has any other, ulterior motives for asking.

"Evening everyone." Henry says expansively. "This is ... shit... what did you say your name was again?" He 'whispers' to you at drunken-whispers-volume, so everyone overheard. He was too busy wracking his brain about 'grad school' to pay attention when you introduced yourself earlier, and the whiskey and coke are not helping either.

The elderly 'couple' at opposite ends of the table look a little concerned, but appear ready to rally to the occasion, not that there is really any room for another person at the already over-crowded table.

Similar to with Kat and Henry, but a lot stronger, you get the whiff of demonic influence from all of them (except Emma), but again, you don't think it is 'direct contact', and definitely not like your situation. They don't show any signs that they pick up on your taint, but they may be good at hiding it?

"I don’t know" her voice as hoarse, thinner than she intended. She kept her head turned away from Persephone and Henry, letting them only see the back of her head, as if she didn't notice they were there "I write about fashion. Nightlife. Relationships. A little gossip."

Her fingers brushed the rim of her empty wine glass. It helped to soothe her nerves as she tried to steady the tremor in her throat.

"I think…" she drew in a breath, forcing herself to meet his eyes "I think I saw your name mentioned on the news?"

"'Relationships'? Shucks, I could probably benefit from reading that." William says, rubbing the back of his neck and putting on an 'ignorant' accent that is unintentionally poking fun at Persephone's americanness (she has not spoken yet, so it probably is not deliberately targeted at her, but if it brings you any —malicious— joy, he would be thrilled).

"Hmm... Yes, 'the news'...? Um, which time? Not 'the weather one'? That did not turn out too well, but was worth a shot. Share price took a bit of a hit when that tanked, but 'nothing ventured, nothing gained' I always say."

"Then that’s where I’ll start looking," says Benji. "Thank you for your help — again. I'm sorry I can't stay and talk for longer, but I'll be back. Hopefully with that book I promised! And my violin, if the rain ever stops..."

Leaving Byron, he crosses the road and heads back into the park proper to try to pick up the hellhound’s trail again.

Persephone speaks clearly, so that both Henry, and everyone else, can hear. She says, "My name is Persephone."

Then she leans close to him and whispers, "Maybe try to stay quiet until you sober up, ok? I'm going to mingle."

She turns to the room and scans the crowd, when she catches the look on Emma's face. Oh no... she is really upset, isn't she... So she heads toward her, saying hello to people as she moves through the room.
Jun 2, 2025 3:21 am
Flirting was like second nature to Emma. She would have slipped into her temptress persona, if she wasn't feeling so vulnerable, barely holding it together. "I only saw the picture and the headline" she admitted, still trying to keep her voice from cracking, but slowly regaining her confidence the longer she talked with him "I didn’t actually read the article" a faint, apologetic smile that didn't quite reach her eyes crossed her lips "What was it about?"

She could hear Persphone's voice from behind her, getting closer and closer, and her shoulders stiffened reflexively as she felt the pressure creeping back up her spine. She didn't turn, or look, but just help her breath, trying to focus on William's eyes to distract her from her inner turmoil.

"It seems to be clearing up?" Byron says optimistically. And he is not completely wrong, you may be in for one of those rare few hours of 'merely light drizzle' or less, but you know that that will not last.

You have a fairly good feel for the smell of the dog from down in the tunnels, and may even be able to pick out the people that have been interacting with it down there, but the near constant rain has washed the park clean of any lingering scents, everything smells clean.

The intense eye-contact is working on William, he does not know how to interpret your emotional response, but flushed cheeks and effort to control one's breathing seem like good indicators of his chances, specially if you and Henry don't seem to be as exclusive as everybody thought.

"Oh well, the headline... yeah, that was a bit harsh, but I suppose it summed it up... missed all the nuance of what I was trying to do. 'Negative results are still results', though." He is enjoying talking about himself, but you get the impression he does not really want to go into the specifics of his failed tech venture related to the weather problem.

He doesn't seem overly concerned about Henry bringing an extra person to the 'party'.

Kat looks up when you speak. "Persephone!" She calls happily. "I did not know you are coming here." Given how they probably know what line of work Kat is in, and that your admonition to keep his mouth shut prevented Henry from introducing you as 'someone from grad school?', they might well make assumptions about where you know Kat from.

Nonetheless, Reginald calls for another chair to be laid on, brushing aside the staff's objections that "the room is already beyond capacity", or that "there literally is nowhere to put it, sir".

They seat you away from Henry and Kat.

Do you know that this is traditional for English dinner parties?

For a secret society they don't seem all that concerned about letting outsiders attend, this may be a 'recruiting pitch' —similar to your approaching Viviana— or maybe they just are not that good at the secrecy aspect, or maybe the whole point of being in a secret society is that others know about it and know that they are not worthy?

There was something deep inside her that was desperate for people to like her. She was soothed the moment she recognized that William was genuinely interested in her, and with her confidence returning, she flashed him an appreciative smile as she leaned in a bit closer:

"You took a risk. I admire that in a man. ‘fear kills more dreams than failure ever will’"

She still didn’t have any idea what his venture was about, but it didn’t matter. The only thing that did matter was that he wanted her "What else are you up to these days?"

"That's so true." William says dreamily, though you suspect he would agree with almost anything you say at the moment. He proceeds to describe his most recent project, using words that he is clearly trying to keep simple, but that are so full of jargon technical terms that you end up no more the wiser about what he is doing, there are computers and AI and blockchain and other buzzwords throughout, but he assures that those are 'not what it is about', just tools.

"I have to admit, most of that went right over my head" she said with a mirthful giggle "Except the AI part. Mr. Thompson spent the last six months threatening to replace me with a bot. I swear to God, he starts scratching like he has a rash anytime I even mention the word ‘raise’"

At least he didn’t follow through on the threat. Yet. She figured it was probably still too difficult to get a bot to fake a review of a nightclub or gallery opening without actually being there. Someone had to be first on the scene and give people a real impression into what was really happening. AI couldn’t just make things up, because if it did and it wouldn’t match people’s actual experience, then no one would bother reading ‘her’ column. Then again, she read somewhere that most of the internet was already bots talking to each other. Maybe it wouldn’t impact her column’s engagement score one bit...

"So… Are you married?" she changed the subject, her expression shifting from the lighthearted smile to intently curious. She only asked because she figured she would have seen her there. Henry did get to bring two dates, apparently, so it seemed a bit unfair the rest of them didn’t get at least one. "So many men here tonight. I didn’t want to assume you are all single"

Benji begins his search near the rose garden. He can't smell much of anything except the rain and the mud, so he has to rely on his eyes. He's looking for tracks in the mud, yes, but also other signs of the infernal -- withered plants, demonic symbols scratched into trees, traces of blood where sacrifices may have been performed, etc.
Jun 3, 2025 10:39 pm
Persephone greets Kat happily, recalling that she too carries the scent of the infernal; Persephone hopes to learn enough at this event to figure out from whom the demonic influence is originating, so she can free Kat of her bondage. And yes, Persephone being associated with Kat as her friend, rather than as Emma's, say, might help Persephone toward that end. Or so she hopes.

When someone calls for a chair, Persephone stands back and watches with perverse amusement as the staff try to figure out how to squeeze one more body into the space. Finally, they opt to squeeze the three smallest people into the space normally allocated to two guests, bringing three smaller chairs out to replace the two larger ones. Thus Persephone finds herself seated next to Emma, as well as a strange man in a normal sized chair on her other side. She is unsurprised to find herself sitting away from Kat and Henry; after all, how are people to strike up new conversations if they only sit with whom they arrived? She'd read enough Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf, and others to know a thing or two about formal dinner parties!

As she sits, Persephone marvels at the staff. Somehow, they navigate this tight space with aplomb, weaving through the narrow spaces and wildly gesturing hands with delicate plates and full glasses. This is what true wealth pays for.

Persephone leans over to Emma and whispers, "I'm sorry if it upset you that I came with him. He and I are aren't... It was the only way I could get in."

Then she turns to the man to her other side, smiles, and says, "Hi, I'm Persephone. So! With whom do I have the pleasure of dining this evening?"

If there ever was any sacrificial blood in this park, the rain has washed it away. Anyway, a wise cult would clean up after themselves if they did not want the authorities getting involved in their business. But... 'The authorities' don't employ vampires, but maybe they should? No matter how well a cult cleans up its bloody sacrifice, a vampire cop would pick up the traces... normally... but the weeks of rain would dilute the evidence, even for such a cop, unless the sacrifice were very recent, and you have no reason to think that is the case tonight.

The rose garden looks pretty miserable, it is the wrong season for blooms, and even the herculean efforts of the grounds keepers have flagged due to the weather. You can't find any signs that you can attribute to a large dog here.

As you proceed deeper into the park, many of the trees might have scratches that could be from a large dog, but they could just as easily be from careless kids, playing.

To fit all the bodies in —they seem to be bending over backwards to accommodate extra people— you are crammed onto a three-seater bench, blessedly the same height as the chairs. Emma on one side and a small, effete man moved to your other... but then they are forced to move Lawrence to the opposite side, which causes some musical chairs again over there.

The man beside you looks very out of place. He is maybe 20, but looks younger, and gives the impression of someone unaccustomed to the clothes he is wearing. He is being pressed against you, but that does not seem to bother him, if he even notices. "Me?" He squeaks nervously. "I'm no one." His eyes dart over to Lawrence for permission to continue before he adds. "I, uh, came with Mr Wakefield." He has a 'common' accent, South London, maybe, if you have any ear for these things, and seems to be trying hard to 'speak properly'.

"On, come now, Percy. We are among friends. We can use the word 'boyfriend'." Wakefield calls from the other side of the table before turning back to grilling Henry —possibly about you.

"Yes, Mr Wakefield." Percy stammers... not exactly the sort of pet-name one used for their boyfriend.

While Wakefield, during the shuffle, 'smelt' a lot more directly connected than Kat and Henry, young Percy seems only slightly more tainted than they are.

Emma’s body tensed when she heard the scrape of the chairs behind her. Her breath caught in her chest as Persephone whispered an apology in her ear. Sorry? After arriving on Henry’s arm, and now seating herself here, next to her? Because now, every glance from across the table at the two of them would remind everyone that it was she, not her, that Henry brought with him tonight. That he chose someone else. That Emma wasn’t special. Just another pretty thing to use until it was time to move on.

She felt the warmth that was building with her conversation with William start to fade. She fell quiet, her gaze dropping from his eyes for the first time this evening. She parted her lips to speak, but only a small breath escaped

"I think I need a drink" she murmured, just barely loud enough for him to hear. She didn’t know how soon it would be before they would start serving wine in a …wine cellar, but maybe a go-getter like him could do something about expediting it

As if summoned by your words there is a servant at your elbow... well... slightly behind your elbow, since there is less space than there should be between diners. He leans over and places a small plate, almost completely empty but for a little, foamy arrangement in the center, along with a glass of something fruity before you, ... possibly 'accidentally' managing to brush your breast with his hand as he does so?

Your throat is feeling dry and scratchy, and your skin feels a little hot and feverish in the close confines of the small room.

The brush of hand against her breast might have been an accident. Probably not. But either way, what was she supposed to do? Swat him away? Accuse him in front of everyone? No. That wasn’t her style. She didn't react, pretending like it never happened.

Instead, she looked on the glass placed before her. God, she wanted to drink, to take the edge off. But she was still English, not an animal, and she knew it wouldn't be proper. Everyone else would need to be served first. Maybe give 'Sin the chance to make some smug little toast. She stoked the curve of the glass instead, her eyes finding William again.

"Sorry, " she intended to sound apologetic over the break in their conversation, but she managed to make it sound suggestive "It’s getting so hot in here…"
Jun 4, 2025 6:28 pm
Ah, I see... she thinks to herself, realizing Percy's role here. In a sense, she has come here under a similar pretense, so she decides to play nice.

"Hi Percy! I'm Persephone. I came as Henry's ...accompaniment, like you came with Mr. Wakefield. We can keep each other company until our, um, our dates are finished with their important business. Yes? Right now our job is to look good, and we can chat while we do that, can't we?" she says, and laughs.

Persephone recognizes how her words will likely strike Emma, but at this point she is rather angry with her friend. Emma knew that Persephone wanted to attend this event and learn more about these demonic forces, but did nothing to get her invited. And now she seems mad that Persephone found a way in despite her, simply because it involved using Emma's ex! Persephone had every intention of leaving the drunken fool empty handed at the end of the night, out of respect for Emma, but now Persephone's feeling annoyed with her, so who knows what will happen. Certainly not Persephone.

"Hot indeed." William says. "But its not all bad." He does not seem to be too bothered by the closeness.

Seeing you playing with your glass, he waits the bare minimum time for everyone to be served —the staff are doing their best to keep it synchronous, but they can't all enter the room at the same time— then he stands, brushing against you since you are so close, raises his glass and toasts: "To those strangers who decided to join us tonight. We appreciate you." Not much to it, but he takes a sip before sitting, and you can do the same.

The formal part of the dinner proceeds, slowly, these people are stuffy enough that the idea of 'games', later, seems strange.

By the time the interminable-feeling courses are done —each very small, but also very good— Reginald slips away to check on the next part, and Charlotte assigns you teams —ostensibly by drawing names from a hat— and directs you all to finish desert and make your way through to the ballroom.

The ballroom has been done up like an escape room, various stations set up at each corner and spiraling inwards to the center. You can start at any of the corners, there is only space for one team per station, unless you want a repeat of the dinner crampedness.

Emma: Henry —who has been paired with the betrayer, Persephone— tries to catch your eye and indicate, "I told them about this. I did this for you.".

While the others take polite sips, Emma finishes her entire glass before William has the chance to sit back down from this toast. The alcohol burns through her chest, chasing away some of the dryness in her throat. "Thanks" she smiles at him, her voice is lower now, and a little breathier than before.

She waits for the entrees to arrive before she sips from her refilled glass. The wine makes everything better. Helps her forget, and soon her laughter comes more easily, and she opens up to William, talking about his work, asking him personal questions on his relationship woes. She doesn’t acknowledge Persephone, even though she can feel her presence. ‘Henry's accompaniment for the evening’ holds no interest to her.

But Henry... She can’t help herself but look across the table every so often. Who is he talking to? Does he look like he’s having a good time? Does he even look at her, or does he have eyes only for Persophene?

Every time she catches herself, she looks away, irritated and angry at herself for caring about him at all. She stabs a piece of food with her fork, but she has no interest in tasting anything. It’s a lovely meal. Exquisite, really, but she barely notices, eating only so she wouldn’t have to drink on an empty stomach; she doesn’t want to feel lightheaded for whatever Sin has planned for later this evening.
Jun 4, 2025 10:03 pm
Persephone sighs at Percy’s ignorance across so many domains. She doesn’t push; she sees him as a victim here.

She can sense Emma’s discomfort just by being near her; it is so noticeable to her that Persephone begins to worry about her friend. Why is all this upsetting her so much? How could she want Henry when she has David??? Henry is a scum bag, obviously. Persephone shrugs and chooses to return Emma’s coldness with her own.

Instead, she engages everyone else in her region of the table, chatting about the cuisine, her time in London, her work in Silicon Valley and with venture capitalists, and more. Though of course she doesn’t divulge anything about her current employer or line of work. In short, she plays along with gusto and attempts to be one of the bright lights of the dinner party.

When it is time for games, she is intrigued to find herself paired with Henry and one of the party organizers. What could be the meaning of this arrangement, she wonders?
Jun 5, 2025 5:23 am
The wine has worked its magic by the time dessert arrives. Her cheeks slightly flushed, and laughter more frequent, she opens up and immerses herself in the dinner conversation. She isn't Persephone. She doesn't know anything about venture capital, or tech, running a business, current affairs, or anything meaningful, really. But the room IS full of men, and if there is one thing Emma does know, is how to get their attention. She nods as they babble about their work, listening intently to every word they are saying. She smiles, hold eye contact, and gives everyone in her vicinity the impression that they are the most important people in the world.

The pairing of Henry and Persephone was meant to be, it seems. Both their names are randomly drawn from the hat, and they are placed on the same team, but Emma doesn't really care anymore. Maybe they do deserve each other. They have so much more in common - both extremely rich, successful, beautiful, and intelligent. And rotten to the core...

But at least she was paired with William, and after a spoonful of chocolate cake (she won't allow herself more than that), she joins the others in the ballroom, one flirty hand over his arm. "Oh, this is so cool!!" she says as she sees the layout of the puzzles, and the stations they've set up in the massive hall. She tugs him by the hand, pulling him into one of the corners, already eager to get started on the game.

Between them —and a ream of reference notes that appear printed from the internet— Reginald and Charlotte explain the 'rules', as best they understand them:

There are various stations in the escape room, each has clues hidden in it in addition to those needed to escape the room; these clues will be needed for 'the next part'; 'time is of the essence'. This last point does not seem to extend to 'running', but the senior members in your team feel it is important enough to keep the pressure on, there is no 'prize', other than the social standing of 'winning'.

Someone else has set this up, there is a little plague adverting the mobile escape room company, but possibly the missing member from lunch is overseeing the arrangements and what comes next.

Emma glances over at Persephone as Reginald and Charlotte explain the rules. She’s so beautiful, and polished, and composed. Emma always admired her, never felt jealous of her—until she saw her hanging on Henry’s arm this evening.

She knew Henry didn’t bring her along because he was impressed with all her accomplishments. It’s all about looks for him, and what she is willing to do for him in bed. But that didn’t make her feel any better. It didn’t make her feel any...less.

Because the truth was that Persephone was a better date for him tonight. More poised, more articulate, more impressive in front of all these men. A better conversationalist. A better everything, really.

So when she threw herself into the game, it is not out of playfulness, but with a kind of desperate obsession. She wanted them to see her. Not her smile, or her body, but her mind too. She wanted them, him, to be impressed by her. Winning a puzzle game wasn’t as impressive as running your own tech company in Silicon Valley. But in her slightly fogged mind from all the champagne, it made sense. Adrenaline running through her body and pushing some of the buzz away, she started working with a single-minded purpose, Percy, and even William, there only to assist the way she directed them.

Persephone arched an eyebrow at this 'game'. The way she figured, if she was going to get to the bottom of this and find out what demonic force is truly running things here, she needed to stand out. And what better way to do that than to win?

She walked over to Henry and leaned in closely. She stood so closely their bodies were touching. She whispered in his ear, saying, "Hi. So, this game is a bit odd for a fancy dinner party, don't you think? Who are these people, anyway? What's this club all about? Games? And here I was thinking we'd get to retire after dinner... Well, I guess we'd better win then, yes? Henry, you win this, you win me."

Then she headed to their assigned area and got to work.

Desperate to win as you are, William seems to equal your keenness.

It is strange that he should care so much about a game. You get the feeling that something else is at stake here: that coming first actually matters to him beyond the simple bragging rights. You can't tell what, but this feel important, paying attention going forward may matter a lot.

Pity your head feels so muzzy and full of cotton-wool.

"They are ... you know... 'the rich and powerful'." Henry answers, he seems to have taken your advice and sobered up a lot during dinner. Of 'demon cults' he apparently knows nothing.

"This game? It was actually my idea." He admits. "I though it might be nice for Emma..." He does not provide context, but looks in Emma's direction sadly, seeming not at all happy about how the day has turned out, and now more than a little guilty about being here with you. He has picked up that she is upset... but then she was upset before you came on the scene.

He seems a little startled by your talk of winning... and by what is being won. Ordinary he may be have been all for it, but having Emma here gives him second thoughts.

"That's the spirit!" Reginald says, possibly having overheard your whispered offer, or maybe just responding to your enthusiasm to win.

In addition to what you needed to solve the escape rooms' puzzles, between your two teams you gathered 3 extra clues, with possible overlap, but with at least one that the other team does not know.

In addition to the clues that make it clear you need to Enter Hyde Park (fortunately it is barely raining tonight), you are looking for:

• the horns of the rose
• the fall of the water
• the den of the snake

There may be other clues, but the senior members of your team are pressing for the team to move. Poor Kat is 'dragged' out in her high-heel shoes and mini-dress.

She had been staring at the cipher far too long. At first, she thought it was a simple substitution, something she could crack with a bit of effort. Turns out it was much more complicated, and she didn't have the patience nor the wits to solve it, in her current buzzed state. Her jaw tightened with annoyance, but only for a moment, as she lifted her eyes from the piece of paper to look at Henry across the room.

He probably already solved it

She remembered how easily he cracked the last one, when she took him on an escape room adventure only a couple of nights ago. It was worth finding out if he’d done it again tonight. And maybe she could feed him a false lead while she's at it, as payback for inviting another woman to dinner.

'All is fair in love and war', or something like that. Besides, if he was stupid enough to trade away his clue, and even more stupid to fall for her false one, then he never deserved to win in the first place.

She crossed the room with quiet confidence, smoothing her dress, and her expression, smiling slyly when she reached him, as if nothing had passed between them tonight. "Care to exchange notes?" the smile became ever more suggestive "I’ll show you mine if you show me yours."

Persephone glanced over as she reviewed the clues and watched Emma approach Henry. Shaking her head, she thought, Wow, she's going all in on this. She must know something about what's at stake here that I don't. God knows she wouldn't whore herself out like that just for Henry. She hates him! ... Oh. Oh! It dawned on Persephone at that moment that, possibly, this has nothing to do with what's at stake and everything to do with Emma's self-esteem issues and the trauma that Henry inflicted upon her. Oh the poor girl... she still wants him after what he did to her. Gross. Whelp, I guess I have to go save her from herself and take one for the team, so to speak... Which, of course, meant Henry.

She approached the two and spoke, her face registering disdain for Emma's behavior. She did not speak to Emma, for two reasons--one, to drive home her disapproval of Emma's behavior, and two, to keep Henry from realizing just yet that the two know each other. That coming out could be bad for both of them here.

Instead, she put a hand on Henry's arm and whispered in his ear, saying, "What would Reginald and Charlotte think if you shared clues with another team? You'll ruin your chances with them. You'll lose access to the wealth and power they promise. Don't."

"Emma!" Henry rebukes, no more amused by your innuendo now than he was in the room earlier. He is about to show you the clue he has written down, and you just catch a glimpse, enough to know it is in the same form as the two you have, but not enough to read the words before Persephone steps in close and torpedoes your efforts.

'Sin, lumbered with a group of 4 vs everyone else's 3, seems to have just solved the first part. "It's in the park!" One of his unnamed/unknown lackeys declares, only to be shushed. They head out of the ballroom, towards the front entrance and the night-dark Hyde Park, you don't know if or how many clues they have.

Charlotte, with Lawrence Wakefield, and Kat, put their heads together upon hearing this and seem to agree, following 'Sin out. It seems that, despite explaining the rules to you, they are no more in the know than everyone else.

"Fine!" she pouts at him playfully, tossing her hair behind her back "Be that way!"

She didn't really feel angry over it. Persephone won this round, but the game was far from over. She turned on her heel without waiting for a response, calling to William and Percy over her shoulder. "Come on. We're heading out"

While the rain outside wasn't punishing, it was still falling steadily, guaranteeing all of them would be soaked by the end of the evening. No matter. She wasn't the one who paid for this expensive dress, who clung a little tighter with each step. Her destination was Hyde Park, and once there, she made a beeline for the rose garden. 'The Horns of Rose', the first clue said, and once she reached the yew hedge 'imagined to be the mouth of a trumpet' she stood still and looked around, trying to find out why they sent here, of all places.
Jun 9, 2025 1:33 am
Persephone smiled when Henry refused Emma's obvious manipulation, but she also felt sad. Persephone didn't want this small and insignificant little man to come between her and her friend, even if her friend was showing a rather unpleasant side of herself at the moment. Goodness knows Persephone had done that plenty with Emma in the recent past, so, she supposed, it was only fair that Persephone grant Emma the same grace.

Hearing the others, Persephone returned to focus on the matter at hand, and consulted Henry. She compared their clues to what others had revealed in announcing they were headed to the park and, if their clues also suggest it, she dragged Henry along to follow.

With the Hyde Park connection made explicit you can tell that that is less 'a clue' than rather specific scene framing. You can't see any fault with everyone else's logic, and following to the park seems a nobrainer.

"In case it wasn't obvious." Henry says to you as you walk. "That was my ex, the one I told you about. You see how she is behaving: all suggestive-like, and looking like that! I worry for her marriage."

Mainly he looks saddened by everything. "I was a right arse when we dated, we were both young and foolish. I have tried to make it up to her, to look out for her wellbeing, but I am not sure I am not just making it worse..."

"What are you two gossiping about?" Reginald demands as you enter the park. "We have a game to win, here."

"Good catch" she gave Percy a soft smile, if brief.

Without missing a step, she begins moving in the direction he indicated, thankful she was prudent enough not to wear heels this evening. At least she could walk comfortably, even if she couldn't keep herself from getting wet. Once they reached the waterfall, she scanned the surroundings. If there is something to be found nearby, she intends to be the one to spot it.
Jun 9, 2025 4:41 am
Persephone nods when Henry talks about Emma, but Reginald’s irritation allows her to avoid replying. Instead, she considers the clues. She doesn’t know about any den in Hyde Park, but she does know that there is a river in the park called the Serpentine. Or is it a lake? She’s unsure. She shares her idea that perhaps this is the snake from the clue, then adds, "I don’t know about any den on the Serpentine, though. Unless it’s an anagram for End? In which case it would be the dam, I guess, with the little waterfall and garden. What can I say? When I went to grad school here I did the tourist thing big time and used to take walks along the Serpentine."

Benji had been beginning to worry that he might have lost the hellhound’s trail entirely, but the discovery of the fur confirms he’s on the right track! Assuming the hellhound came from the same direction he did, that would suggest the hellhound was travelling westward – toward the Serpentine perhaps? Hugging his bundled-up sword close to his chest, he begins walking in that direction, keeping an eye out for more traces of the hellhound along the way. He hears clumsy footfalls and drunken laughter nearby. He frowns to himself. Whatever game the humans are playing seems to be driving them in a very similar direction... He hopes for their sake that he can find this hellhound before it finds them.

"Because, now that you mention it: I think it was a 'tourist' thing, a bit called 'the den', but I don't recall where."

It might not matter too much if Henry can recall the location, you get a distinct whiff of something demonic —like you have never felt before... (except maybe, as a vague memory of when you signed your contact?)— it comes from down river to the south.

All the non-game clues are starting to form something in your brain, there is definitely something weird about how much these grown men want to win this game, but 'Sin also seems inclined towards making sure Kat's team is not the first, even if he does not win, you are pretty sure he has tried sabotaging them.

• Did you ever talk to Persephone about 'demons' and 'cults' and the sorts of things they are known for? Until recently you did not even know demons were real, but did your research cover things like sacrifices and other unsavory topics?

• Does any caution pierce your competitive spirit? Do you still aim to win this? You can see where they are headed and can get there first, if you so choose, it is just over the low fence... [streetview]

Then, so that Reginald and Henry can hear, but not any others, she whispers, "I can find it. Follow me." And she beelines straight for the source of the smell.

Jun 10, 2025 6:06 am
Emma jumped over the fence, expecting to land on soft, wet grass.

The sudden drop took her breath away. She fell hard, and fast, spinning in the darkness. She couldn’t tell which way was up, or down. It all took a couple of seconds, but it felt like an eternity. The air rushed past her, and she flailed helplessly, desperate to try and grab of hold to something.

Then something grabbed her ankle.

It was sharp, and tight, yanking her upward, slowing her descent. Her body jerked. The fall that could have killed her ended up only frightening her beyond her wits end.

Heart hammering in her chest, she felt the ground underneath her, not pavement, or grass, but packed earth, uneven beneath her hands. The smell hit her almost at once. Something rotten, with a metallic edge to it. Her fingers brushed around something sticky, and she recoiled in terror…

What happened? Where was she?

She couldn’t breath, gasping tightly for air but it seems like none reached her lungs. Fidgeting, she pulled her phone and turned on the flashlight. It was a soft light, not nearly enough to illuminate the entire underground cavern. She was instantly sorry that she did. Rotting carcasses. Blood all over the floor. And a demon standing just next to her, moth like wings folded behind her.

She froze, and then there was a glimmer of recognition in her eyes

"Pers!" Her voice caught in her throat, and the tears came fast, almost before she could process it. "I’m sorry. I’m so sorry" she fell into her arms, sobbing like a little girl

Demon. Benji had indeed caught what Persephone had mouthed to him and the mingling smells of blood and brimstone confirm it. He quickly scrambles to his feet. He’d thought Persephone must have sensed the hellhound he’d been chasing but, looking around, he fears that there might be something far worse than a hellhound down here.

His sword and his coat are lying on the ground nearby, having been dropped during his fall. He picks them up and slips on his coat before turning back to Emma and Persephone. "Are you both all right?" he asks. "What happened back there? What is this place?"

All Emma wanted to do was go to a cool party, and dazzle everyone with her beauty, and get everyone to like her. And now she was sitting in a black, bottomless pit, and her pretty dress was ruined, and her knees were bruised, and the entire party was a sham to get HER here to sacrifice her to some horrible eldritch monster (and she's not even a virgin), and Henry doesn't care for her, and Pers must be angry with her, and she doesn't even care about this stupid cult, she just want to be home, sitting on her sofa, and drinking her coffee, and reading a safe book, and kissing David, and, and, and...

Her breathing came rapidly, and she felt like she was choking. All she could do was sob helplessly over Persephone's shoulder, mumbling an occasional 'sorry', as if she were a priest giving her the last rites.

In demon form, it is all Persephone can do to keep herself calm. She wants to rage, to rend, to tear, and terrify. But her friends need her to be Persephone right now, not ... the demon.

Persephone stands there, her hand on Emma's shoulder, trying to calm her. It must be a strange sight indeed for Benji to see: Persephone's body is twisted unnaturally, her bones and joints bending in all the wrong directions; her skin is rubbery but translucent, revealing black blood, stone-gray sinewy muscles, and blood red bones; her eyes are illuminated with flame as smoke pours out, like two smoking torches; sprouting from her back are two large wings that resemble the death's head moth, though obviously much larger and more robust; her hands end in serrated, bony claws; and around her head, a halo of oily black smoke and buzzing flies circles, like a mockery of an angelic halo.

Even though she is trying to comfort Emma, her voice comes out like an atonal harmony of screams from across a chasm. She says, "It's OK, Emma. Let's just focus on getting out of here. Oh, Benji! Uh, don't worry, It's Persephone. This is my... well... my demon form. We attended a 'party'; I wanted to try to uncover the demon behind it, as well as figure out the purpose of the little recruiting event. Honestly, I am not sure what Emma's goal was. Well, it seems that we will be meeting the demon soon, as we have entered its domain. And yeah, the 'party' and subsequent game was actually an elaborate sacrificial ritual. And we're the sacrifices."

Persephone flapped her moth-wings and rose into the air, hoping to get a better look around at where they were. She hoped she would. not have to call upon her patron for help; she was mortally afraid that she had already pushed that Debt too far...

Throughout the last 200 years, Benji’s seen a lot of strange things and he’s learned to take most things in stride, but Persephone’s demon form is difficult not to flinch at. She’d said she was a demon, or becoming one, but turning around to see Emma weeping into the arms of some kind of eldritch monstrosity was still a bit of a shock. Even so, he tries not to let his fright register on his face, at least, so as not to hurt Persephone’s feelings. He knows what it’s like to be treated like a monster, after all.

Persephone’s explanation lines up with his own understanding and fills in some gaps. "Sacrifices?" he echoes, nervously, as Persephone flies up to get a better look around the cavern.
Jun 11, 2025 2:59 am
Benji: There are rotting sheep and pig carcasses on the floor, they have signs of being mauled (or maybe just 'eaten'?) by canine (dog) mouths. There is a butcher's stamp, clearly visible, on one of the pig carcasses, reducing the likelihood that the dog hunted these animals itself, and making it much more likely that someone used them to distract the beast for some reason.

Persephone: The ceiling over here is high enough that you can ascend to well above the heads of your companions. There are two passages leading out from here —or really: one passage that passes through this grotto— they both look low enough that you can not fly through them very easily, but you can't see much once you leave the bubble of light from Emma's phone. Your phone might still be with your things, unless it was shredded along with your clothes?

Everyone: From down one of the passages comes a sound... your imagination conjures up all sorts of horrible things, 'heavy foot falls' are prominent in those images.

She knows she has to pull herself together, has to focus, but her mind can't find anything to anchor her.
What could she possibly do? How could she wake up from this nightmare?

As the 'heavy foot falls' approach, she closes her eyes, and clicks the heels of her shoes together, whispering quietly in the darkness:

While it was true that Emma could be a little vain, this time she (also) genuinely believed it was all about her.

The cult couldn’t have known Persephone would crash the party tonight. The scavenger hunt, the careful planning... it had all been set up before in advance. And she remembered now; Lawrence calling Percy back. Sin delaying Kat. Reginald panicking, shouting about someone "spoiling everything" right before the ground swallowed her whole.

She was the one who was meant to be here. Alone.

The low, rumbling voice from the tunnel sent a chill through her, but it was almost comforting compared to snarls or growls. If it could talk, then maybe it could think. Maybe it could be reasoned with. Or bargained with.

They brought me down here like a piece of meat. Like something.... disposable. I am not going to die like this. I’ll show them. I’ll show them all!

"Who are you? What do you want from me?" she called into the darkness, but even as she spoke, her eyes darted across the cavern, using the light of her phone to sweep right, and left, scanning for something, anything, that might help. Someone had to have come here before her. Some other sacrifice. Maybe they left a clue behind, some way out

Because running blindly down a dark tunnel, away from the voice, didn't seem like a good idea right now. It couldn't possibly be that easy...

"I want you to die." The voice says. Surly it can't be 'quoting' the movie! You still can't see what is speaking.

There are no signs of previous sacrifices, in fact, you get the feeling you are/were to be the first in a long time (but maybe Benji's knowledge will help clarify that if you all have a moment to share your insights).

What do you find down here? How do you turn that to your advance?
Jun 11, 2025 7:11 am
Benji silently sidesteps closer to Emma, facing the darkness with his sword raised.
Jun 11, 2025 5:20 pm
Persephone floats back down to the ground next to Emma and says, in her demonic voice, "There is a passage here, extending in two directions, but it is too dark for me to see. And, well, my phone is in my purse, which I dropped when I transformed..."

Then she hears the Voice, threatening. Persephone steps in front of Emma and Benji (even though Benji likely needs no protecting), and raises her voice. Now her demonic utterances boom out of her like thunder. She intones, "This one is NOT for you! She is mine. I am an agent of The Whispered One and I will not be denied!"

She has no idea if naming/invoking her patron here is a good idea or a terrible one. She's about to find out, it seems.
Jun 12, 2025 9:51 pm
As she speaks, she channels the infernal hellfire she feels ever burning within her and directs its energy at the approaching entity. No literal hellfire shoots out when she speaks, of course, but the infernal energy is there, implicit in her words.

"Ho ho ho! Who's that, then, little mouse?" The voice booms from out of the dark, not impressed by the name. From back down at ground height you see can further along the passage, a huge figure approaches, flaming horns brushing the ceiling, despite its slightly bent posture.

It is a demon of nightmares!

You see a huge 'man' approaching from the one passage, he glows like the embers of a fire, and once he enters the bubble of your phone's light, you see sulphurous smoke emanating from his naked body, head, and ... horns!

He could have attacked you, rather he called you 'little blonde girl', suggesting her could see you while you lay on the ground... (or that he was expecting you specifically (or Kat?), but it could just as easily have been Percy who was first... nah, he was too timid, it was always going to be you, right?) He didn't attack, it does not seem like his intent is to harm you, more like he is herding you somewhere.

There is something else going on here, some bigger game, you just don't have all the pieces.

If this demon —for that is surely what it is— isn't meant to kill you —and even if it was, you are not much of a challenge— and is only an intimidation tactic, then maybe it is not actually as dangerous as it looks. Maybe, with a concerted effort, you all can quickly take it out? Benji has a sword! And there are several large thigh-bones that could make rather wicked weapons.

Emma’s knees gave way the moment the demon stepped into the pale circle of her phone’s light. She tumbled backwards on the floor, gasping as the breath was knocked out of her. A primal fear surged through her, and all she could think of was to escape.

Crawling backward like a cornered animal, gagging before the sulphurous smoke. She wanted to scream, to run and vanish into the darkness of the tunnel behind her. Maybe she could run away, before it reaches her.

She stopped herself cold before moving more than a feet away, shivering as the creature loomed above her.

If it wanted to kill her, why hasn’t it?

"Benji! Pers! Please! Do something!!!" her voice was part a call for help, part sob. Instead of retreating, her hands fumbled in the darkness to try and grab something, anything, to keep the monster at bay, at least for a little while.
Jun 13, 2025 7:16 am
Benji points his sword at the demon as it emerges from the tunnel. The tip of the blade is trembling slightly and he realises that he’s shaking. He came prepared to fight a hellhound, not… whatever this is.

But I can’t just run away like last time! he tells himself, firmly. After all, he and Persephone are the only thing standing between Emma and the demon. At Emma’s cry, he musters his courage and darts forward, his sword flashing silver in the weak light of Emma’s phone.

She casts her eyes about for something she can do, when Benji bravely charges forward with a sword! A sword!? Persephone marvels at that.

But she does see that he has created an opportunity, rendering the demon off-balance, so she shakes her head in frustration and decides to try something. She springs forward, wings flapping, bringing her at the demon's head. She grabs both sides of his head and slams her feet down onto the creature's chest, sending it falling backwards. Once atop it, she stares it in the eyes and says, Show us the way to the exit or we destroy you!

"Get off me you daft besom!" The demon demands, though its booming voice is sounding more than a little petulant. It tries to beat you away with its one hand, the other holding its side where Benji's sword did a right number on its apparently vulnerable flesh. It does not seem very strong, and you have suffered worse blows in your friendly kickboxing classes.

"'Exit'!? What do you mean: 'Exit'? This is all there is." It indicates the corridors and the stink —if you give it a chance too. There is a definitely element of 'Hey, lady. I just work here!' to its attitude and level of knowledge.

What to you to.
Jun 14, 2025 3:26 am
Persephone flaps her wings in the demon's face and flies backwards, landing a short distance away, next to Emma. She looks at Emma, confused, and shrugs. She turns back to the demon and says, "OK, listen, I work for an infernal master too. I know what it's like. I don't want to make your existence any more miserable than it has to be, thanks mostly to your master, I am sure. So how about we make this easy for everyone, OK? Just tell us... what is happening here? Who is your master? What is going to happen if we go with you?"

Before it went down under Persephone's onslaught, the demon struck out at you, but you barely noticed its ineffectual blows. There is an ashy mark on your coat, but it really is not much of a fighter.

You are reminded of the surprising ineffectiveness of the hoard of demons sent against Jacob, they looked scary enough, but they also went down rather easily. At the time, maybe, you attributed this to the skills of your Demon Hunter friend, but maybe it is a pattern? This feels a lot like Chaudry again.

The demon gives you a 'well, duh' look, that is clearly not just you 'having a bad hair day', it can see the demon.

"'With'?..." It says, sounding confused by the word. "I didn't think I would get to go with. I always hoped to get to see what comes next. Can I come?"

It seems it was just summoned here a few minutes ago, and its job was to chase its victim (singular, helpless) down the passage, that is all it knows.

"I don't think we are allowed to know the ...you know, names ... of our summoners?" It sounds hesitant, as though worried it may be the butt of a joke. "Do you know yours? Why don't you break free and consume his liver?"

What do you do?
Jun 14, 2025 4:41 am
Emma stood frozen for a moment as she tried to catch her breath. The stench in the cavern was still oppressive; the smell of rotting eggs now added to the stench of rotting carcasses. She fought the urge to puke. She didn't know why someone would even bother with a demon. The smell alone would be enough to drive her away toward one of the tunnels...

"I think..." she tried to breath through her mouth "I think it was supposed to chase me"

This wasn’t what she expected of a demon. The tone, the uncertainty. Barely a threat. Her readers probably wouldn't like him either. It seemed to fit more in a children's book than a horror novel. She decides to ignore it.

"..which means" she completed her thought, "That whatever is there, is either immobile, or too big to fit through the tunnels. This might actually be... the safest place we’ve got right now" she stood up straighter, finally reclaiming a fragment of composure.
Jun 14, 2025 5:00 am
Persephone nods at Emma’s assessment of this demon’s purpose—to chase her down the tunnel. But she hesitates at Emma’s conclusion. She replies, saying, "Perhaps, but we shall not escape this place remaining here..."

To the demon, she asks, "You were tasked with driving us that way. What lies down the tunnel in the other direction? Do you know? And yes, you may accompany us."

Then she sighs and adds, "I wish I knew its name. I only know a few of its well-known epithets. Hey, how about I offer you this: cooperate with us, and I will tell you your summoner’s name f I ever learn it."

As Persephone has become more comfortable in this situation, she has begun to slide into her Silicon Valley "deal maker" mode, apparently, and now she’s looking for the right angle to work.
Jun 14, 2025 5:19 am
Benji hops back a few steps out of the demons reach (although it doesn’t seem to be much of a threat anymore) and brushes the ash from his coat. "Persephone’s right. We can’t stay down here forever."

He cocks his head at the demon curiously. "Would knowing your summoner’s name allow you to break free from their control then?" he asks. He glances at Persephone, hoping he is not undercutting her negotiation, before adding, "I actually think I might know it."
Jun 14, 2025 6:58 am
"Erm... Excuse me..." The demon booms hesitantly when Emma suggests staying here and not going down the tunnel. "I do have a job, you know." It seems a lot happier when Persephone both suggests continuing in the direction it was supposed to chase you, and allowing it to come along.

Of down the tunnel, whence it came, the demon knows nothing. It was summoned where it started and given orders. It did not think to go exploring.

"If I had the name... oooh, what torments I would wreak upon their person!" The demon rubs its hands in glee. "But what sorceries would you use to learn such valuable information?" 'True Names' are a big deal, people don't share them willy-nilly, you can't get them off someone's driver's licence, or even from a friend, the exact way they are spoken, the precise pattern of sounds made by the mouth and mind of the person themselves, is hard to emulate... if you believe such things.

What do you all do?
Jun 14, 2025 7:29 am
Wait. Did Benji just say he knew who summoned the Demon? How??? He only just got here, didn’t he? He wasn’t even AT the dinner party. Has he been investigating the cult on his own this whole time? He better not, because if he had known something and kept her in the dark, especially knowing she was walking straight into a trap...

She ignored the demon, which she thought walked way too much. It seemed too pleased to be here, and whatever it was doing, it wasn’t here to help.

Instead, she spoke softly to the others, though her voice still trembled slightly. "If that thing was summoned to chase someone - me- down that tunnel… then I want to know where it came from. She turned her phone toward the path the demon emerged from, to illuminate a couple of feet in its direction "I don't want to go where I'm supposed to" and when did she ever? "So...forward that way?"

"Well, it probably isn’t his true name," Benji says to the demon. "But I have reason to believe a wizard named Chaudry might have summoned you here. Does that sound right to you?"

To Emma and Persephone, he explains, "I was tracking a hellhound through the park when I ran into you two. I’m pretty sure the hellhound was summoned by the same wizard… or, at least, that would be the simplest explanation anyway."

He peers down the tunnel in the direction Emma indicated and nods. "That certainly makes sense to me! I’m sure this demon wasn’t summoned to chase us toward the exit after all."
Jun 14, 2025 8:28 am

"Indian fella? Could be." The demon agrees that Chaudry may well be its current master.

"The hellhound?... I don't think so, not unless he royally messed up. I think this whole thing has something to do with getting rid of that thing. Though I am only guessing from, ya know, outside clues." It indicates the carcasses used as distractions and possible attempts to get past the hellhound guardian.

"Be a mate, though, bruv. You already stabbed me. Don't make me fight you. You have to go that way." The poor demon whines when the conversation continues to drive away from its task. It does not sound at all happy about the idea of fighting you again, but it does not actually have a choice.

Chaudry
Chaudry is a small time conjurer, specialising in summonings. He fell into disrepute after a few schemes went bad a few years ago and has been trying to recover his reputation... unfortunately his reputation is that of a fraudster and con-artist.

He had a connection with an illegal dog fighting ring, allegedly using demon dogs, but, if this demon is to be believed, that may have been part of a larger plan, research to get past the hellhound that Benji has been hunting. Rumours of this particular 'track cryptid' predate Chaudry's time in London.

Emma: You did not really speak to Henry after lunch, but what you could gather from Kat might suggest that Chaudry was the extra man at that gathering. He does not seem their type: Maybe he is working a con on them? Maybe they are using him for their own ends? Maybe it does not matter, they all tried to kill you.

Persephone: Chaudry has caused more problems for demons and their reputation than almost anyone. He is spoken of in he same vein as that guy that put lead in petrol and CFCs in refrigerators. You don't have free reign to take him out —you don't know who his benefactors may be— but messing with his plans will definitely buy you brownie points, and eliminating him —especially discretely— would be for the greater good... of demonkind...

This demon before you is par for the course with Chaudry, mostly show, little actual fighting ability. But he does have some tricks up his sleeves, so don't underestimate his minions.
Jun 14, 2025 3:19 pm
Emma looks downward to look at the demon's wagging...tail, for 'research purposes', before rolling her eyes when he made the crude suggestion to Pers

"Charming"

She sighed, and went back to the topic of Chaudry

"Look, if Chaudry is involved, it’s not because he’s in charge. He’s a conjurer-for-hire, not a mastermind. I think I might have heard Kat mention his name, but if he was invited to the retreat, it’s only because they let him in. They used him. Just like they used me. He got a shit poor reputation" and the minion standing next to them was proof of that "- but if it weren't for you, he would have delivered on what they asked for"

She felt like they wasted enough time talking about him. She didn't have any quarrel with Chaudry, and she wanted to assume it was the same with him. It was 'strictly business'. Besides, he wasn't currently present, so why waste time worrying about him?

"So… " she motioned her head at the dark tunnel, quite eager to get out of there as fast as her legs could carry her "can we please get out of here?"
Jun 14, 2025 10:46 pm
Persephone scans the demon up and down suggestively and says, "I'm not asking for your true name, silly. But get together back home? Sure, why not?"

She steps close to the demon and takes her finger, with its sharp talon, and carefully carves her cell into the demon's chest. She replies, "Sorry. Don't have my phone with me. Or, you know, clothes."

She turns to Emma and Benji and says, "Yeah, let's head that way," and she points her talon down the hallway in the opposite direction that the demon was supposed to lead them.

It does not have a phone, nor any way to contact you using one. It will also need some motivation to reveal its true name —the easiest way to get hold of it, in- or out of hell— but, and don't ask me how you know, your act of carving your number into its chest was definitely a turn on.

Emma wasn't exactly tempted. More like worried. The 'tail' looked like it came with a liability waiver and a tetanus shot.
Pers, however, seemed interested, but she assumed she was probably just playing him, just like she did with Henry. But if she did end up hooking up with a demon from hell, she planned to get all the details from her.

Anyways.

She didn't want to be the first to go into that dark tunnel. She gave Benji a hesitant glance, hoping he would pick up on the not-so-subtle hint and lead the way.
Jun 15, 2025 7:37 am
Benji is watching Persephone’s exchange with the demon with a bewildered expression. He catches Emma’s pointed glance but it takes him a few seconds to decipher it. "Oh! You want me to go first?" He’d been hoping someone else would volunteer to lead the way, but he supposes it makes sense that it should be him. He’s the only one who can see in the dark, after all… "Well, alright. Follow me, then, I suppose!" He sets off down the tunnel.
Jun 15, 2025 1:26 pm
Persephone smiles coyly and says, "I didn't break it, silly: I dropped it. I'll go back and get it. Call me, ok?" She runs her talon down the demon's shoulder as she struts past, causing a thin line of demonic ichor to bleed out, and heads off to join the others as they move down the far hallway.

When she catches up with Emma and Benji, she offers only a sheepish smile and a half-shrug--a strange sight indeed, given her current infernal appearance.

"Erm..." The demon raises a claw in hesitant objection to everyone ignoring it and walking past, but it is a bit smitten and distracted by Persephone's flirting. It follows behind, ready to take on the visage of 'chasing' if your route brings you round to its master.

There are not a lot of tunnels, their purpose is unclear, and they look old. There is also no obvious way out, the air, once you get away for (or used to) the dog-meat-distractions, is stuffy and dry, like the weather outside has has no effect anywhere in these... what are these? 'Caves'?

It is possible the only way out is the way in: via some 'portal' or similar. And it is possible only the wizard who brought you here has the means to activate this portal. Maybe you can find a passage that brings you to him from behind? Maybe you can use that to get the drop?

She threw a glance over her shoulder, instantly regretted it.

The shape of the tunnels, it reminds her of something. A shape from the pages of a book she once read under the covers. Lovecraft, maybe. Or some hack writer who’d tasted madness. Or maybe it was just her vivid imagination that conjured the image. The image of something huge, with wet flesh and grinding teeth, burrowing through stone like it was rotten wood. A thing with no eyes, no voice, just hunger. A maggot the size of a subway train, dragging tunnels through the rock, carving a hive, or a nest, or…

Her skin turns to needles. The air here doesn’t just smell still. It smells abandoned. Like whatever made these halls has already moved on, or worse, is waiting somewhere nearby.

Wandering these tunnels with a demon companion (or, is it two demons —as Persephone insisted she was— (and a vampire)) while hiding from a (unverified) madman —who must be getting impatient and be thinking about summoning more demons to hunt you down— is just the sort of thing to put one in a creepy state of mind.

You find evidence of a large dog, the animal carcasses (seemingly used as distraction) have been eaten... and that has to go somewhere. The fact that Benji says the dog is sometimes seen on the train tracks suggests it has a way out of these tunnels. But you don't find a physical link between this place and that.

You came here through a 'portal', it opened in the ground and closed behind you and your brave companions. You don't know much about 'portals', or magic —or, it seems, anything really— but one piece of wall feels ... different, in an otherworldly way. You can't explain it, but there is a horrible connection to back home. You are no tracker, but, with this feeling in mind, by the light of your phone, you are pretty sure there are dog spoor concentrated here, like it has a way through solid stone.

How you would activate this 'portal' —if it even is one— you don't know. But given the hellish nature of the dog, and everything else you have seen down here, there is nothing to suggest it will be 'righteous'. The cost may be high.

As they meander the maze of tunnels, Persephone slows enough to be near the demon walking behind them. She looks at it and says, "So, if you don't have a phone, you can't call me so easily, can you? Do you mind if I call you, then? What's your name? Don't worry, I'll only use it for our date..." She smiles as innocently as a demonic horror can!

As they reach a patch of wall and Emma stops to investigate, Persephone wonders aloud, saying, "You know, honestly, based on the fact that our friend here was not expecting resistance, or even more than one person, we might not have as tough a time with our host as we thought. We could probably wander down these tunnels, taking turns that lead us back around to the original place we were supposed to go. Maybe we could even sneak up on our host? I bet he can get us out of here if we squeeze him hard enough...Just a thought."
Jun 16, 2025 4:32 am
Emma’s fingers barely grazed the strange section of wall before she pulled them back. She didn’t say anything, just stared at it for a bit, feeling a tightening in her chest the longer she looked into the darkness. There was something deeply wrong with it, but she had no words for it, and no intention of trying.

"This is pointless" she stepped back, and looked at the others "We’re just going to keep going in circles down here, or get lost" she nodded in silent agreement with Pers. They might be walking into a trap, but she didn't see a better option. Maybe their 'host' didn't anticipate her arriving with company, and they could somehow overwhelm it.

Without waiting for a response, she started walking back down the tunnel, this time leading the way herself.

Chaudry, being human (presumably), would need light down here, so your phone might not immediately catch his attention, but the dog possibly does not care about light. Whether that lack of caring plays to your advantage you have no way of knowing... Whoops, wrong, you may be about to find out...

The dog lies sleeping, you can hear its heavy breathing moments before your light falls upon it. In a different room just off to the side you hear something shift, then there is light spilling out into the passage and a voice says: "What's taking so long? Go and check."

Her hand shot out instinctively to press grasp Persephone’s arm in panic. The shape of the slumbering beast was just beyond the light of her phone. Her stomach turned cold. That must be the hellhound Benji was tracking. The one she wanted nothing to do with.

Well, at least it was sleeping.

Then, she heard the man's voice. She didn't recognize it to be Chaudry, but she heard enough of him ordering someone to go check.
Maybe if they could duck into the shadows in the nearby tunnel and hide until it passes, they would have the chance to sneak up on whoever's running the show

You have made your way around the back of Chaudry's trap, you hear heavy, shuffling, footfalls proceeding away from you, out the way you were 'supposed' to come in by.

It seems he has summoned another demon to do his bidding, but it is out of the room right now. Chaudry may be alone, if you act fast you may be able to catch him with his pants down... no, bad choice of words, given what you have seen thus far... But you will be placing yourselves between the summoner and the hellhound.

What do you do?
OOC:
It might be worth remembering that Chaudry seemed to need to throw meat to distract the hellhound, they might not be 'friends'.
Jun 16, 2025 9:54 am
Emma only waited long enough to hear the demon's shuffles fading away before she stepped into the open, shoulders square and eyes blazing. Every insult to her dignity this evening, her injured pride, the ruined dress, the betrayal by those who invited her to dinner, every terrifying moment in those tunnels; all of it boiled in her blood now.

She marched straight toward Chaudry, looking every bit the wrong woman to have pissed off today.

"What the hell, Chaudry!" she closed the distance to him, until she was practically in his face
Jun 16, 2025 12:33 pm
While they wait for the demon to pass, Benji offers his sword to Persephone, hilt first, hoping that she can use it to defend herself and Emma should the hellhound wake or Chaudry’s newest demon return. He slips into the shadows, preparing to sneak up on Chaudry and restrain him before he can cast any spells, when Emma suddenly charges into the room ahead of him! Surprised but realizing he has to act quickly now, he darts into the room behind her and prepares to grab the wizard while Emma has him distracted.

Chaudry takes an involuntary step backwards as you are suddenly in his face. His eyes dart everywhere, looking for answers.

"Wha? Who are you? What are you doing here?" He exclaims. Possibly the fact that you weren't at the lunch meeting, and so he does not recognise you, is the only thing that buys you a moment of inactivity.

The room is set up just like you might picture a sacrifice chamber, there is a stone altar —not originally part of the room, you don't think— and a fire burning in a brazier right next to it.

Chaudry has a knife, it is more fancy than functional, and you don't think he intended to overpower his victim by himself.

At the same time you start moving, Chaudry is panicking and reaches out and rips a paper banner hanging from the altar, half of it going into the fire. From the split in the paper two demons step out, flanking Chaudry defensively.

Chaudry has not seen you yet, if you halt in time you can remain outside the room and in the shadows.

"Who exactly..." Chaudry starts, then remembering his role: "COWER BEFORE ME!" He bellows, but he seems to hurt his throat doing so, and quickly stops. "What is your purpose here?" He demands pompously, trying to work out what is going on.

He now has two demons, bigger and stronger looking than the first. They look ready to grab you at their master's slightest command.

"No" she snapped at him."You don’t get to ask questions."

She didn’t raise her voice, but there was a dangerous glint in her eyes, the kind that made it clear she was barely keeping herself from lunging at him. Maybe he wasn’t the one pulling all the strings, maybe he was just a pawn, but that didn’t matter. He was still preparing to sacrifice her. Besides, she needed an outlet for all the frustration building up inside her all day:

"What I want to know - is why. Why bring me here? Why bring ME here?" she paused to look at him "Those are two different questions, by the way"

Chaudry blinks at you, stunned by your sheer hubris. "Actually: I don't answer questions." He says. "So you are the one? How did you get around that side? You didn't wake the dog, did you?" He seems more worried about the sleeping dog than about any threat you might post on your own, though he is a little worried about how you dealt with his other demon.

"What are we talking! Grab her!" He shouts to his henchmen. They lunge for your arms.

Emma didn’t wait. The second Chaudry shouted, she was already moving with a surge of adrenaline, sprinting down the tunnel like her life depended on it. She was in great shape - all that gym time, the pilates, the jogs. Her fixation with her appearance was her driving force, but now it served a different purpose altogether - to see if she could outrun a demon.

Emma made a mad dash down the tunnel. The demons were right behind her, close enough that she could smell the sulfuric stench of rotten eggs and brimstone. She was a mortal woman, and they were supernatural beings – but at the end of the day, they were spirits clothed in flesh. Just like she was.

The tunnels played to her advantage. Low ceilings that prevented them from flying, and so many sharp turns and narrow forks to slow them down, or even had them second-guessing for a moment which direction she vanished into, before picking up on her scent again.

She veered down a side passage without thinking, heart pounding in her ears. Another sudden bend, which she skidded around. She almost barely noticed the third demon standing at the junction ahead, with only her phone to light her path, but she was already past it before it could react.

She dashed through the darkness until her lungs started to ache and her heart threatened to burst.
And there it was – the wall.

The same wrongness pulsing through the stone, warm to the touch, as if it was alive. It’s touch repulsed her before. And even now, there was something eager in the way it throbbed. Sort of like an invitation. She swore she heard the faint whispers in her ear, inviting her to step through.

This time, she didn’t hesitate.

She slammed her palm against the wall, feeling a sickening twist in her gut.
The wall folded around her. For one sickening instant, everything twisted around her.

She gasped.

And then she was gone.

**********

Rain blurred the flashing blue lights in the distance,

Emma emerged from the darkness of the night, walking barefoot on the wet grass with her shoes dangling in one hand. Her emerald-green dress was torn, soaked through, clinging tightly to her skin. She was wet, and cold, walking as in a slow, dazed trance.

She couldn’t remember exactly where she appeared. There was an arched ceiling above her when she first opened her eyes. She thinks it looked Victorian, but she couldn’t remember. Everything felt far away, as if she had just woken up from a dream.

Grass squelching under her feet, she drifted forward, eyes fixed on the pulsing blue lights.

The summoner is fast, he summons up two more demons, these ones look more attuned to restraining (but then the first one looked scary, but was mainly there for show?). The 'restraint demons' lunge for Emma, but she is quicker still, darting away and then sprinting past you.

Emma keeps running. You can't be sure where she is headed, she did not say anything about it, but maybe she has discovered a way out?

Do you follow? Or do you use the confusion of her sudden departure to ambush the demons as they pass?

You appear back in ... in our world (? Is that an appropriate distinction? It feels like it?) —pulled back here by something that feels both beautiful... and scary ... wild; something that is both very much like you, and also very, very different.

A few seconds/minutes later your phone starts to go off, dozens of messages and missed calls, from Henry and the hotel, mainly; all crammed into the space of the few minutes you were 'down there'.

It seems Henry was worried. You don't know what he saw, or what he thinks he saw, but the blue lights probably mean he called the cops, expecting them to sort it out.

What do you do?
Jun 17, 2025 3:40 am
Emma blinked against the rain as her phone buzzed to life in her hand. A flood of messages and missed calls lit up the screen, far too many to read in this downpour. She stared at it for a moment, then slipped her phone back into her purse, which was just as soaked as the dress plastered to her skin.

Still barefoot, she crossed the street without thinking, stepping directly into a wide puddle that soaked her up to the ankles.
Once she reached one of the parked patrol cars, she gently knocked on the window, and waited for it to slide down just an inch; enough to carry a short conversation without letting the rain in.

"Sorry; I’m... a bit disoriented" her voice was hoarse, and faint "Could someone give me a ride back to my hotel?"
Jun 17, 2025 3:51 am
Persephone nodded as Emma turned and headed back. She followed, but doubling back put her next to the demon again. As they walked side by side, she turned and said, "Hey. I'll show you mine if you show me yours. Your true name, I mean. OK? Mine is Persephone Mei Zhang. What's yours?"

The demon utters something that Persephone struggles to understand. He repeats it and she tries to replicate it. After several attempts, she finally gets it right. "Kal’verrak'thurazel. Kal’verrak'thurazel. OK, got it. I'll stick with Kal, for short, when we're just chatting, k?"

Suddenly Persephone realized that Emma had gotten a good distance ahead of them, so she hurried after. When she caught up with her, she found her face to face with someone who must be Choudry, flanked with two demons! Emma quickly ran, but Persephone wasn't sure she wanted to do that, not just yet, at least, so she stepped into the room.
Jun 17, 2025 3:57 am
Persephone sauntered in, her eyes of flame smoking, her moth wings flexing, and her translucent skin sliding across her sinews and bones. She adopted a power pose and raised her voice, saying, "Chaudry. You summon minor demons to do your bidding, but I am an agent of a major power, one known as The Whispered One. I wish to speak with you, perhaps to make a mutually beneficial arrangement. My master's power is vast; you would be wise to consider this offer. Will you speak?"

"'"Persephone Mei Zhang. Persephone Mei Zhang."'" Kal chants. "You sure? That's a seriously weird name." You have heard this before, but never from someone whose name is so much stranger than yours.

"Oops! There's the boss." Kal says in a way that is so reminiscent of 'office work' that it borders on the satirical. "Uh... Grr? Argh? Oh, forget it. I did my best."

"Come back, you fools!" Chaudry calls after the demons chasing Emma, but they already have their orders and are gone. Chaudry looks around for an advantage, but sags when he sees you in all your glory.

Persephone smiled at Kal, patted his shoulder, and said, "Aw, you did good, big guy." She was being sincere, too. She liked the demon, for some reason. It suddenly occurred to her that this might be what her sister Circe meant when she once accused Persephone of having the worst taste in men.

Then she turned to Chaudry and crossed her arms, and said, "You should know by now that nothing of value is easy to attain. If it were, every fool would possess it. Now, what was your goal here?"

Emma leaned back in the seat, trying to focus as the police car begins to move. She was still trying to get her bearing, but even in her discombobulated state she knew better than to tell the whole truth.

"I’m... not totally sure. I was at this dinner, and there were drinks. Not that many, but... enough, I guess."
She looked out the window at the rain falling
"I remember walking. I think I wandered into the park for some sort of game. There was this thing—like a raised platform, a gazebo or something? With a roof and steps? I don't know how I ended up there. Maybe I've fallen asleep? I don't know" she lowered her voice and looked back at the woman riding with her at the back "I'm sorry; I didn’t mean to make anyone worry."

You see the officer write what looks like 'bandstand' and 'toilets' as she notes down what you say.

It is not far to the hotel, but the car is driving very slowly, giving them time to asks questions without the need to detain you. "Are you sure you don't need the hospital?" The officer asks gently, looking over your torn clothes as well as your cold and wet condition. (You do feel a little feverish, and chills at the same time, but that has been all evening.)

"Let's go through the one more time." The police say, and you know from research that they will go round and round in circles if given the chance, this has proved to be the most effective way to catch people out in a lie. "Tell us about this 'game'."

"No… no hospital" she shook her head slowly "I just want to go back to the hotel. I need a hot shower and my bed"

"Can we not do this now?" she pleaded once they tried asking her about the 'game' "Please. I’m cold, I’m soaked through, and I can barely keep my eyes open. "Yes, of course." The officer says, in a way that sounds a lot like, 'no, not just yet'. "What about the woman who was with you? Where is she? We need to find her before we can rest." Technically they need to find her before they can rest, but including you in the 'saving' is meant to motivate your caring instincts.

""She’s....missing?" she didn't need to feign concern. She really was worried about Pers. She didn't know how long has passed, but she hoped she managed to find her own way out. In her mad dash to escape the demons, she couldn't stop and see if she was following her.

"I understand." The officer says, you obviously look distraught and vulnerable. "No one seemed to know her full name. Can you provide any information to help?"

Henry introduced Persephone by her first name only, maybe he does not know more? Persephone was having a whole conversation about sharing or not sharing names... with a demon... if any of that went in, maybe you don't want to tell the police more? Besides, what can they really do to help her?

The cops share a look, a nod, and then bring the car to a halt outside The Lanesborough. There is another cop car out here, though not showing blue lights, so you might not notice. There are also cops in the corridor outside Henry's room.

Henry, it seems, has been pacing, you can see the muddy track on the expensive carpet, and he is still in his wet clothes. "Are you alright?" He asks as soon as you enter, giving the cops a 'shoo' look and looking like he wants to give you big hug. He does not demand to know what happened, even though he clearly wants to.

She had every reason to be furious with him. He brought another woman to dinner tonight. All the scars she still had from their toxic relationship. But he did call the police after she was gone. He obviously still cared about her. But what was more important than all of that is that he was there. Solid. Real.

Stepping forward, and collapsed into his chest. Her shoes fell from her fingers, and her arms went around him, face pressed into his shirt as she started sobbing quietly. She hated being so weak, but right now she wanted someone to hold on to. Someone with a pulse. Someone who didn't look like a nightmare from hell and smelled of rotten eggs.

So she held on to him for a long while, trembling, until she would find the power to say something.

Finally pulling back, she wiped the tears from her face with the back of her hand. She felt like a wreck, and she imagined she looked like one too.

"I need..." She struggled to swallow, and started again, a bit softer. "I need a shower"
She shivered as she said it, her teeth clacking together. She was starting to feel worse and worse, and she was hoping it was just from being cold and wet. She wrapped her arms around herself, rubbing at them in a useless attempt to heat herself up a bit.

"Could you... just stay nearby? Not in the room, I just... close. In the bathroom. In case I..." She trailed off, hating the way her voice trembled again.

"Of course." Henry says walking with you into the bathroom and turning on the shower for you, it warms up fast enough that he needn't have bothered, but it is a nice gesture, nonetheless. There are fresh towels and robes in the bathroom.

Henry steps outside. "Do you want the door open or closed?" He calls back as he does. You hear the sound of one of the fancy, heavy chairs being dragged across the carpet to near the door.

What do you do?
Jun 17, 2025 10:03 am
"Leave the door open. but no peeking!"
She didn't want to flirt with him this time, or imply anything. She only needed him near by as reassurance
"I just… I’m afraid I might faint. And I don’t want to be locked in if it happens. Or for you not to hear."

Waiting for him to sit just outside the door, she stepped behind the glass divide and, with a quiet breath, peeled the soaked dress off her body. It clung stubbornly in places, and made a wet slap when she finally got it to drop onto the floor in a crumpled heap. Then, she stepped under the stream, moaning softly as soon as the water hit her. The hot spray loosened the cold knots in her shoulders, her back, her thighs, washing away the mud, the sweat, the stench of demons and rotting carcasses.

Her body still ached with soreness in her joints and a tightness in her throat as a fever started to settle in. But she was feeling much better; when she finally shut the water off and stepped out, wrapped in a snug towel around herself, she felt almost like her old self. She grabbed another towel and started carefully blotting her hair as she stepped out of the bathroom, steam billowing behind her like a mist.

She stepped barefoot into the room, pink-skinned from the heat and scented with soap and conditioner. She didn’t look at Henry, but just brushed past him and headed for her suitcase, searching through it for clean clothes.

"I need to know what happened after I was gone" she said without turning her head at him "everything that happened"
Jun 17, 2025 10:42 am
- Emma -

"Of course not." Henry says, a little of his normal impatience creeping back into his voice. You hear the sound of his shoes hitting the carpet, as he finally starts to relax. "I will be here."

He sits patiently as you go about your ablutions, he obviously wants to pepper you with questions, but is waiting for you to show you are ready to talk.

When you emerge from the shower his eyes do a passable impression of a cartoon character's popping out at the sight of a pretty lady, and his concern is tempered with exasperation.

"Are you feeling better?" He asks before answer your questions. "Mind if I take a shower while we talk?" He is shivering in his wet clothes.

With your permission, Henry steps into the shower, avoiding your (expensive) pile of clothes, and turns the shower back on, the door still open. "I don't know what happened." He says, trying not to sound petulant. "You were gone, and Reginald was all: 'Go to your room', and 'they will only blame you'. And he is right, the police immediately started to question me. Reginald and the rest denied knowing what I was talking about. They said that I was the one to invite two women away for the weekend, and that they did not know them beyond a few names. 'Maybe' they suggested, 'he's having a affair with a married woman, and his girlfriend found out', 'maybe' they said, 'he arranged for them to murder each other.' I was so worried, why would they go there? Why talk about 'murder'? What did they know? Where is Persephone? I don't think she was at grad school with me, you know. The hotel won't say anything about her."

What do you do?
Jun 17, 2025 10:59 am
She allowed her towel to drop to the carpet once Henry went inside the shower, somewhat relieved she could dress in peace. She picked something practical from her suitcase; soft and comfy lounge pants and a gray camisole. Sitting on the edge of the bed, she tugged some dry socks on as she listened to Henry's story

"I told you they’re all part of a demon-worshipping cult" she reminded telling him that explicitly, though he thought she was jesting "You did see what Persephone turned into, didn’t you? You must have."

She searched for an extra pair of shoes, because her previous pair was all soggy and wet. Good thing she decided on packing an entire suitcase for this weekend. She had a pair of running shoes she intended to wear for the treadmill in the hotel's gym. They'll do for now. "These are all very dangerous people, Henry. You should keep your mouth shut, else they might decide to make you disappear next"

"What? No you didn't." Henry says, having dismissed that part as a flight of fancy and forgotten it. "'Persephone'? What do you mean 'turned into'? Did she do this?" It is easier for him to blame the woman who wormed her way into his friend-group through lies than the people he is having a hard time continuing to look up to. He is not sure he wants to be in their group anymore.

"I can't say nothing!" He objects. "They hurt you!" You wound his manly pride, and while you may think him an overbearing ass, he does worry about you [c.f., your sheet].

It is late, and you are tired, and there is a huge, warm bed beneath you.

Emma sat at the edge of the bed, toweling the last of the moisture from her hair, raising her voice so he could hear her over the water running in the shower. "Come on. You know what you saw. Stop lying to yourself"

He didn’t realize what he was risking by talking. She did, and it looked like she had to be blunt in order to protect him from doing something stupid. That was her job. "I’m fine. I got away before they could ritually sacrifice me. But if you’re serious about wanting to protect me, then do not go blabbing to the cops. Just drop it. They’ve got people in the force too. The fucking Commissioner is on their payroll"

She exhaled slowly, then looked up at the mattress. Going to bed was tempting, but she couldn't just yet.
"Can you hurry up in there?" she called toward the bathroom "There’s still some stuff we need to do tonight"

"Wait! Ritually ... what?" Henry say, popping just his head around the door-frame, the water still running. "You're being serious? You actually believe all this stuff?" He is trying real hard to avoid accusing you of being silly, but you sound like a child.

"'The commissioner'? Of the police? I doubt that, they did not seem too pally-pally when being questioned." He says, nipping back in to turn off the water and towel off, then popping back out at your last. "What do you mean 'stuff to do'? I'm not doing anything tonight!"

She didn't believe he could have missed seeing what Persephone turned into. She was standing right next to him, for god's sakes! The level of denial was incredible, but maybe she should have expected as much. It is easier to put the blindfold over your eyes and pretend like the world still makes sense.

She gave him a quick, appreciative glance when he stepped out of the shower in his towel. He was breaking one of her rules, but she was beyond caring right now. Emma took a deep breath, steeling herself. She slipped on her shoes quietly and headed toward the corridor leading to Sinclair’s suite. A moment later, she was knocking on his door, waiting for him to open up.

As predicted, there is no answer from 'Sin's door. It is late and most people are sleeping.

Emma tries the buzzer now, a couple of times. She can't believe they just went to bed after planning and committing a murder. The gall of some people!
OOC:
If there is still no reply, she will call Kat up on her phone and ask her to open up

They might not have 'gone to bed' so much at 'they are ignoring you, the crazy people in the hall'.

When you call Kat's phone, you definitely hear it ring, 'Sin swear, and the phone cuts off.

In a hurry and without any witnesses nearby, Benji forgoes all pretence of humanity and takes the demon down in a violent whirlwind of fangs and steel. He sinks his teeth into the demons neck, intending to rip its throat out, when he hears an alarming cracking sound and feels a jolt of pain in his left fang. He recoils with a hiss, gingerly poking at the sore fang. "Owwww! Damn it…"

The demon he was attacking is dead or near enough as to not matter anymore. Crouched over its body and covered in ichor, he hisses at the remaining demons—the one that fell and the one that was sent ahead. He’d rather not have to fight them if he doesn’t have to, but Chaudry sent them after Emma and he’s not sure if it’s possible for them to disobey his orders. "If either of you takes another step down that tunnel, I'll be forced to kill you too," he warns them.

The 'seeker' demon looks on nervously, not at all keen to tangle with you, that being completely outside it orders. The 'restraint' demon looks aghast, as if to say 'you just killed my friend', but it also saw how easily you did that, and the ichor of its buddy flowing from your fangs makes it none too keen either.

You know from Persephone's boyfriend that they have some leeway when it comes to 'obeying', but it still needs to do its best to 'get her'. It takes a hesitant step away from you.

Emma wouldn’t let a door stand between her and a quarry. When the direct approach failed, she was always willing to try something a little underhanded.

Still dressed in her camisole and lounge pants, she pulled Henry behind her toward the Lanesborough’s opulent lobby. The staff were too well-trained to stare, but her appearance drew a few raised brows all the same. She didn't care. If anything, it would give credence to her story. Telling Henry to stay out of view first, she approached the front desk with just the right mixture of sheepishness and entitlement, and leaned on the counter with her elbows, a little bit more forward than was decent.

"Hi… sorry. I’m staying with Mr. Sinclair—Alastair Sinclair. I stepped out for a breather and forgot my key. Can you give me a spare so I can get back into the room? The Royal Suite? He dozed off after... anyways, he dozed off, and I wouldn't want to wake him up" She tilted her head slightly, giving a soft, awkward smile like someone embarrassed by her own carelessness.

"Of course." The attendant says, trying hard to keep his eyes off you. "Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you." He says, handing you a keycard.

"I can't believe that worked!" Henry says when you rejoin him. "You are amazing!"

The corridor is empty when you get to 'Sin's room. You slip the keycard in and there is a discrete beep, then the door opens.

"What are you doing in here!?" 'Sin exclaims, jumping up from bed. Kat is beside him, trying to cover up, but it looks like she has a black eye, and she looks cowed.

"You can't be in here! I'm calling security!" 'Sin blusters, but Henry steps between him and the phone, glowering own at him. Maybe people forgot, but Henry is a 'fine specimen of a man', quite a bit taller and broader than 'Sin, and the man falls back onto the covers. It does not help his case that he is wearing only his boxer-shorts.

The 'restraint' demon shrugs, it has its orders, it squares off against you, unarmed, but not surprised this time. It is ready to fight. The 'seeker' demon still has not decided what its function is, but it looks like it will take any opportunity to pursue its task of 'looking for the sacrifice' while the 'restrain' demon keeps you occupied.

Emma stood in the doorway, blowing steam through her nostrils. She didn’t flinch at the sight of Kat’s black eye, though it would only have served to infuriate her more, nor did she give Sinclair the satisfaction of reacting to his pathetic attempt at bravado.

"Stand down" she said coldly, her voice low and coiled. "You have no idea what you’re dealing with."

She was supposed to be dead. Their little plan didn’t work, and now she was there, in his doorway. She counted on it being enough to give him pause, to at least consider that he might have to tread carefully around her, or else:
"if you don’t start talking, something is going to come collect its due. From you, personally, not your little club. Maybe me. Maybe something far worse."

She took a few deliberate steps into the room, not breaking eye contact.

"Give me what I want, and I’ll forget this entire thing ever happened"

"Who are you?" 'Sin exclaims in awe, then starts to scrabble for forgiveness. "I'm so sorry. We thought you were nobody," at this mention of 'a nobody' his eyes dart to Kat, "that they would blame the vampire, or the jealous ex-boyfriend." You might —if you were feeling charitable— realise that, had Charlotte and her team played a bit harder, it would have been Kat going down into that hole, and her pimp or her john ('Sin, himself) who 'they' would be looking at regarding the disappearance.

"We had no idea..." '...that you mattered', he means to say, but doesn't. "How can I ever make it up to you?"

Emma begins to relax when he kowtows to her, his servility soothing her anger
"For starters; you’re going to tell your friends not to fuck with me again. I want to enjoy the rest of my stay at the Lanesborough in peace, without any more of your pathetic little games. And yes, 'everyone' includes Chaudry."

She intentionally dropped the sorcerer's name, just another indication she knows more than they suspected.

"Though perhaps that one won’t be necessary. Depending on what shape he’s in. If he’s even in one."

She let the implication hang in the air, just to plant even more fear in his heart.

"But what I really want" she continued, her eyes now on Kat "is her. See, I have a thing for blondes too. And I have… uses for her."

"Of course. Of course. We will." 'Sin agrees, flinching slightly at the mention of Chaudry, but not looking too concerned for his well-being.

"Kat? Yes, of course, take her." He motions for kat to get out of the bed quickly. Henry tsks and quickly gives her his jacket to cover her nakedness.

Taking it, Kat stands, confused, not sure what to do or what is going on.

"You're working for me now, Kat" she said it with unmistakable authority, mostly for Sinclair’s benefit, but underneath, something dark stirred within her. After all, she did just save Kat from being abused, didn't she? Doesn't that mean that Kat owes her?

"We're good now" she turned back to Sinclair "Maybe next time, we’ll have a more… enjoyable partnership. I would rather cooperate - than eliminate"

She gave a silent nod to Henry, motioning to him, and Kat, to move toward the door, staying just long enough to give Sinclair the opportunity to say something, if he was still inclined to.

'Sin nods in agreement. He does not point out that Kat does no work for him, that he has no say over your claim that she works for you now. Her pimp may have opinions on that, but 'Sin would rather not be involved in that discussion.

Kat has not understood most of what happened, but she doesn't argue, ready to come with you, but hoping to be allowed to get her things first.

Emma waited for Kat to gather her belongings, but her body language made it clear that she should hurry about it; tapping her foot, and constantly looking toward the door.

A surge of adrenaline passed through her body once they finally stepped into the corridor. She had actually pulled it off!!! She walked into Sinclair’s room, took his girl, and left him rattled enough to grovel. She would have laughed, but with Kat bruised and shaken beside her, it didn’t feel like the moment.

Her tone shifted once they were back in their room, much softer, as she looked at the young woman with real concern:
"Are you alright? What did that bastard do to you?"
