Chapter 2: The Trek to Myrefall

Yenna steps back from the table, her composed demeanor returning, though the concern in her eyes remains. "The path ahead is perilous," she says, her voice resonating with quiet authority. "But you carry the light of Ormskirk with you. Go swiftly, go safely, and return to us."

Thorgrim nods gruffly, clapping a heavy hand on the nearest adventurer's shoulder. "Aye. Don't keep the hearthfires waiting too long. There'll be warm stew and cold ale upon your return." He offers a final, determined look to the group. "Make us proud."

As the doors of the longhouse swing open, the party is met not just by the biting wind, but by the faces of their community. Despite the early evening hour and the storm, a crowd of villagers has gathered – fishers, trappers, artisans, families – their expressions a mixture of fear, hope, and grim determination. Lanterns sway in the wind, casting flickering light on anxious faces. Children clutched their parents' legs, peering out at the heroes. There are no cheers, only a heavy, supportive silence, perhaps punctuated by quiet murmurs of "Be safe," or "Gods speed." It is a potent reminder of what they fight for – not just the abstract idea of saving the region, but these specific people, their neighbors, their families.

Leaving the relative warmth and light of Ormskirk behind, the adventurers step into the teeth of the blizzard. The wind howls, driving snow horizontally, stinging exposed skin and reducing visibility to mere feet. Each step is a struggle against the deepening drifts and the icy grip of the cold. The path is treacherous, hidden beneath a blanket of white.

Some ambiance, if you'd like.
OOC:
Because of Johan and Leta's experience in the Wilds, I am not making any of you take Survival checks, though the trek is, to say the least, awful.
Two grueling days pass in a relentless trek through the unforgiving landscape, the storm showing no signs of abatement. What should be a single day's journey stretches agonizingly onward. Just as exhaustion threatens to overwhelm them completely on the evening of the second day, with the faint outline of Myrefall's valley perhaps only an hour's travel ahead, they find a small depression sheltered by a cluster of ancient pines, offering minimal respite from the wind's fury. Working together, shivering but determined, they clear the snow and set up a rudimentary camp. The Winterlight Lantern is lit, held persistently in Nelie's small hands, casting its eerie blue glow and pushing back the oppressive cold in a small, welcome circle of warmth. Huddled together, they eat meager rations, the silence broken only by the roar of the storm outside their small sanctuary and the sounds of people preparing to bed down.
OOC:
Time for some RP again, if you'd all like. Just let me know when you'd like to move on.

Warming herself, "This Winterlight Lantern is real blessing." She seems staff off the worst of the weather. But her and Johan are more used to it.

"Rest well tonight. Tomorrow we will be in Myrefall."

Nelie tugs the cloak tighter. Her little prestidigitation magic, normally used to entertain the children of Ormskirk with simple light shows, is now fully employed to keep her boots and clothing warmed. Against the bitter wind it's not much, but combined with the Winterlight Lantern it almost makes the winter cold bearable.

She nods in agreement with Leta. "Yes, it really is." At the mention of Myrefall though, a shiver runs through her. As glad as she'll be to find a roof over their heads, she knows they're all thinking of what they might find there...

Our half-elven paladin pulls her cloak tightly. She sits by the campfire with the Scout’s Horn still s,ung over her shoulder.

I can take the first watch, she says. I am not particularly sleepy yet. There’s room in my tent, for one, if anyone needs to share the space.

Kethra’s mind quickly wanders once again. She takes a stick into her right hand, and etched three dots into the snow. One, two, three…all in a vertical line. And she stares at them with steely blue eyes.

Johan is glad they found this area to make camp. Any little wind break is a mercy. "Well we will be in Myrefall tomorrow and then the real fun will start. I will take mid watch." He will head to his tent and keep his weapons close.

May 6, 2025 2:35 am
Odin was setting up his tent as the conversation of night watch came up. He gently interjects:

"I suggest we all get some sleep.
My spirit raven, Huginn, can watch over us. He does not sleep and he can instantly alert me if there is any cause for alarm through the night.

I only offer this as a suggestion...if you would rather set up a watch, by all means. I will still offer Huginn's services as a second pair of eyes."

Kish is grateful his heritage offers a bit of protection from the elements but still wishes he had a bit more bulk to his build after forcefully trudging through the deep snow for the last two days. As the others set to making camp Kish tiredly does the same. At Kethra's and Odin's comments he replies.

I think it best we have a watch. Odin, can you raven see in the gloom of night? If so it might be a good idea for it to watch from outside the lantern light. If we are this close to an enemy force I think it best we try to have a guard and preferably ones with darkvision for the middle of the night. Just a suggestion but either way I will take last watch.

The meager warmth of the Winterlight Lantern offers little comfort against the biting chill of the morning. Though the storm still rages, the wind seems to have momentarily lessened its fury, allowing slivers of grey dawn light to pierce the oppressive gloom. The scent of pine and wet earth hangs heavy in the air. The relative quiet feels unnerving after two days of constant howling wind. Ahead, through the swirling snow, the dark line of the Myrefall valley ridge is faintly visible, a reminder that their destination is near, yet still separated by the dangerous wilderness.

For Odin, however, the morning breaks differently. A familiar, urgent mental nudge from his spirit raven, Huginn, cuts through the lingering tendrils of sleep. Danger. Close. Watching! Huginn, perched unseen in the high branches, has detected movement – stealthy shapes slinking through the pines, converging on their camp.

Odin has but a moment to process Huginn's silent alarm before sharp snarls shatter the morning stillness. Bursting from the snow-laden pines surrounding the camp, three shapes launch themselves towards the party. Low, guttural growls echo as grey forms blur against the white landscape – wolves.

These appear to be natural wolves of the Wilds, large and lean from the harsh winter, but something is immediately unsettling. Their grey fur is ragged, and patches of dark, frozen blood stain their muzzles and chests. Their eyes, when they meet the party's gaze, hold no typical animal caution, only a raw, frenzied bloodlust. They move with a coordinated, predatory focus, clearly targeting the adventurers within the small camp, ignoring the usual fear a wolf might show towards a group of armed humanoids.

Congrats, Huginn -- you saved the party from having the Surprised condition!

The last of the blood-crazed wolves falls silent in the snow, its unnatural fury extinguished. A tense quiet descends upon the camp, broken only by the party's ragged breaths and the ever-present howl of the wind. The immediate threat is gone, but the encounter leaves a lingering unease. The wolves' aggression, their bloodstained muzzles... it's another dark omen on this already grim journey. Wasting no time, the party packs their meager camp, the image of Myrefall's valley ridge urging them onward.

As they prepare to leave, they notice a significant change: the relentless blizzard that has plagued them for two days has finally begun to break. The wind, though still bitingly cold, has lost much of its violent fury, and the snowfall has dwindled to a light, swirling flurry. Patches of grey sky are visible overhead, and visibility has improved considerably. Wasting no time, the party packs their meager camp, the now clearer image of Myrefall's valley ridge urging them onward.

An hour of cautious travel through the now thinning snows and over treacherous, icy patches brings them to the crest of the ridge overlooking Myrefall. The wind, while no longer a blizzard, still whips sharply across this exposed height, carrying flurries that sting their faces. But through the clearer air, the sight below steals the breath from their lungs – or perhaps it's the acrid smell of old fires and something else, something sickeningly sweet, that catches in their throats.

This isn't the small, bustling village you might remember or have heard tales of. The outskirts of Myrefall are a scene of utter devastation. Houses stand as blackened, skeletal frames, their timbers scorched and collapsed. Others are simply smashed, roofs caved in, walls rent asunder as if by a giant, furious hand. Debris – shattered wood, broken pottery, scraps of torn fabric – litters the snow-choked ground, tossed about like children's toys. A chilling silence hangs over the ruins, punctuated only by the mournful whistle of the wind through broken structures and the occasional creak of a dangerously leaning wall. There are no signs of life, no smoke from chimneys, no voices – only a profound, deathly stillness.

As the party stands at the edge of this nightmare, the wind carries a new sound - a distant, mournful howl that seems to echo off the valley walls. It's not the sound of wolves they heard earlier, but something deeper, more resonant, and somehow... wrong. The sound sends a chill down their spines that has nothing to do with the cold.

The clearing weather, while welcome, offers little comfort in the face of such devastation.

point of clarification
Quote:
The outskirts of Myrefall are a scene of utter devastation. ...
the buildings that are completely devastated are the communal buildings, longhouse (inn and bar), church, the community storage barn.
Is the entire town destroyed?
Being able to ignore the cold better than his fellows Kish has been pondering the Winterlight Lantern. While taking down the camp he asks the others if any are smoked with crafting. As it might be helpful to fashion a bonnet for the Lantern and suspend it over the party member who needs it's aid the most. This should allow them to benefit while limiting the lights glow in revealing their presence.
As they look over the town Kish shake his head. This, this is bad. This is not mere mindless destructing but a careful eradication of any meant to use this place or is resources to last the winter. I wish we could locate the sending stone. All the villages and outlying settlements need to be warned. These Lesen mean to quote of all who live here. And if they're can eliminate a town this fast they can likely do it again.

Wanting a better grasp of the enemy Kish looks for tracks and signs of damage to determine the types of magic and weapons used.

"Myrefall..." Nelie whispers in shock, her mind as blank as the snow surrounding them. It's hard to gather her thoughts in view of such devastation. An entire village, broken like this...

Johan and Kish's exchange snaps her out of it. She nods in agreement. "The longhouse, yes. And if there are survivors of the attack still around, the longhouse or the church should be a good place to start looking, right?"

The attacker, or survivors though I doubt that, are still about. and he points out some fresh traces, a couple hours old by his estimate, around the village administrative and social centers. We need to find out who else is nearby before proceeding with anything else he states emphatically before continuing.

Honestly though, the thing that concerns me the most is the intelligence behind it. Not only was it and organized surprise attack but from the looks of it the order of events was very strategic. and Kish point out a few key points he noticed
+The night watch was systematically eliminated first, based on the guards bodies placement
+ The warning bell was likely targeted early to prevent the alert from spreading.
+ Many villagers were slain in their beds or mid meal preparation
+ Signs of storage rooms being systematically cleaned out

If they are collecting resources then they are likely moving on to their next target. Taking the towns food allows them to move without the need to gather resources. but where

Johan will take the healer kit .Johan will nod to Kish"Somebody had definitely been here since the attack. They have methodically dismantled and clean out the merchant stalls. Taking all valuable items. There are also signs of them dragging something heavy to the village center. By their boots prints they were searching for something specific. These prints only seem to be a few hours old." Looking around"It seems most of their activity was at the market. I say we head to the long house and check it out."

Odin had been quiet for some time and to any who may have noticed, his gaze would have seemed 'off in the distance', as if staring off into space...yet he still seemed alert and aware of his surroundings. It was only after Kish and Johan had spoken of their observations that Odin seemed to 'return to them'.

In quiet tones he added:

"I have seen beyond sight in this matter. The buildings have not been destroyed at radom but rather they have been systematically demolished in a spiral pattern...it is as if something massive and ancient has methodically worked its way from the outskirts of this village, inward, toward its center.

I offer a warning to us all. In the shadows of the destroyed buildings there is "something". I can not see it clear enough to tell you what it is, but I assure you it is there. It remains in the darkness, seemingly intentionally avoiding my 'sight'. What I 'have' been able to 'see' is disturbing on its own. I have glimpsed large, dark shapes moving in the shadows between the ruins. Their movements suggest wolves, but they are far too large and coordinated to be natural predators.

The trail to the southeast is marked with sporadic signs of struggle as well as periodic blood spatters in the snow...it suggests to me that the villagers were indeed herded off into the wilderness. The trail leads toward an area where the forest grows notably darker and more ancient, away from the more traveled paths between settlements.

Most concerning to me is that there are distinct massive, deep impressions pressed into the snow and earth...as if by colossal, irregular feet. And interspersed with these tracks are long, gouging furrows in the ground. I suspect that, in an attempt to conceal these tracks, their makers have dragged immense, gnarled branches behind them in order to scrape away the snow and topsoil along with their footprints.

I have also seen areas nearby where the ground looks as though something with incredible strength has pushed through dense, frozen undergrowth, leaving behind a trail of splintered wood and disturbed earth unlike any animal spoor I've ever encountered. These tracks seem to be focused around the destroyed buildings.

As a point of full disclosure regarding what my 'far sight' has permitted me to observe, I have seen snow-covered ruins in the area surrounding the village that create an almost maze-like network of partially collapsed structures and debris.

We must proceed with much caution."

Kish edges away from the shadows he had been contemplating slipping into to get out of sight and grumbles about being out in the open and ensures his weapons are free to draw quickly.

How big are these "colossal" prints? You are familiar with animals so how large would you estimate the creature to be?

Nelie looks wide-eyed at the destruction around them. "So... thorough. So deliberate." Whatever this was, it didn't match much at all with what she knew of Leshen. And the giant tracks, knowingly concealed, according to Odin.

"Yes, we really do need to be careful. I'm starting to think we really have no idea of what we're really up against..."
May 16, 2025 9:08 pm
Johan listening"If it leave tracks I can track it. I can follow a trail that has been disguised also. Wiping a trail leaves a trail if you don't know what you are doing. I still think we should scour the long house for the stone though."
May 16, 2025 9:27 pm
I agree it would be helpful but given the thoroughness the enemy has shown in pillaging this place and the fact the enemy was here not to long ago and we may be already surrounded I am a bit reluctant to focus too much on searching. But if others will watch while I search or if any of you have means to help detect the stone then I am all for finding it as quickly as possible.

Psybermagi says:

"Each footprint punches deep into the snow, roughly circular or perhaps irregularly oblong, easily two to three feet in diameter.

In the softer, undisturbed snow, they sink at least a foot to a foot and a half down, compressing the layers beneath.

Where the ground is firmer or the snow shallower near trampled areas, the impressions are still a good six to eight inches deep, with the 'talons' or 'roots' gouging even further into the frozen soil below.

I don't have any reference point in my own personal experience to suggest how big something would need to be to make footprints like these.

It's clear that whatever made these tracks has considerable weight and is pressing down with force."

The party moves carefully through the snow-covered ruins, their footsteps muffled by the fresh powder. They've managed to get surprisingly close to the longhouse, using the cover of fallen timbers to mask their approach. Through the gaps in the broken walls, they can see two figures inside, their attention focused on a glowing stone, which you all immediately identify as a Sending Stone.

The creatures are unlike anything the party has seen before. They stand upright like men, but their bodies are covered in thick, shaggy fur the color of winter shadows. Their limbs are lean and muscular, ending in hands that are more paw than human, with sharp black claws that glint in the dim light. Their heads are distinctly wolf-like, with elongated muzzles and pointed ears that twitch at every sound. Their eyes, a piercing yellow that seems to glow in the darkness, hold an intelligence that speaks of more than mere animal cunning.

The larger of the two holds the stone aloft, its blue veins pulsing with magical light. His other hand rests on the hilt of an elegant longsword at his hip. The blade's pale glow casts strange shadows across his fur-covered face. The crossguard, shaped like crescent moons, catches what little light filters through the gaps in the ruined roof.

The second wolfman reaches up with clawed hands toward the stone. His yellow eyes fix on it with a mix of reverence and hunger. Three wolves, each about the size of a large dog, stand guard nearby. Their breath forms clouds in the frigid air as they pace between the fallen timbers and broken furniture. Suddenly, all three wolves freeze in place. Their ears perk up simultaneously, and their noses twitch as they catch the scent of the party. The still air carries the unmistakable smell of warm bodies and metal. The wolves' heads turn as one, their yellow eyes locking onto the party's position. A low growl rumbles from one wolf's throat, causing the other two to follow its gaze.

The wolfman leader's hand tightens around the stone as he spots the less stealthy members of your group. His lips pull back in a snarl, revealing rows of sharp teeth. He barks a command in their guttural tongue, the sound echoing off the broken walls.

The wolves crouch, their muscles tensing beneath their thick winter coats. The second wolfman draws a crude but deadly-looking axe from his belt. The leader's free hand moves to the hilt of his moon-touched blade. Its pale light grows brighter, as if sensing the coming violence. The ruined longhouse, once a place of community and warmth, is about to become a battlefield.

The air crackles as Leta calls forth divine energy, a pillar of sacred flame erupting towards the nearest wolf. But the creature, with preternatural senses, twists aside at the last moment. The radiant fire scorches the snow where it stood an instant before, leaving only a wisp of steam in the frigid air.

The presumed wolfman leader reacts with terrifying speed. With a guttural snarl, it drops the glowing stone on the ground and snatches a gnarled looking longbow from his back. It moves up and with a fluid motion, nocks an arrow, draws, and looses two shots in quick succession. The arrows whistle through the air, aimed directly at Leta, who had moved closest.

Despite the cover Leta sought behind a crumbling wall, one of the black-fletched arrows finds its mark with brutal efficiency. It punches through her defenses, a searing pain tearing through her. Leta gasps, her strength failing her, and collapses to the snow-covered ground, the world dimming around her. The pale light of the wolfman's sword seems to mock her as she fights to cling to consciousness.

The second wolfman, seeing his leader's success, mirrors the action. He draws his own longbow and sends two arrows flying toward Kethra. The shafts whistle past her head. One strikes sparks against her upraised shield and the other buries itself deep in a splintered timber beside her.

At the same time, one of the wolves breaks from the pack. It lunges towards Kish, its teeth bared in a snarl. But Kish was ready. As the wolf entered his reach, he unleashes his readied attack. His rapier finds its mark, carving a deep gash into the creature's shoulder. The wolf yelps, its attack faltering from the grievous wound. It snaps weakly at Kish, its jaws closing on empty air as he sidesteps the clumsy attack.

One of the other wolves use their packmate's charge as a distraction. They circle around Kethra, trying to flank her among the debris. They attack in a flurry of snapping jaws and sharp claws, yet Kethra stands firm. She deflects a bite with her shield and twists away from a clawing attack. The wolves' fangs find only steel and air.

The battlefield has shifted in moments. Leta is saved from the brink of death by Neilie's quick thinking, Kethra stands as a bastion of steel, deflecting every attack sent her way. Kish has drawn first blood against the beasts. The wolfmen watch from a distance, their bows still ready.

Without taking a single step from his position, Odin thrusts a hand forward. A bolt of pure, crackling force leaps from his palm and screams across the length of the ruined hall. It smashes into the wolf in the far doorway with a sound like fracturing stone, staggering the creature with a fresh, smoking wound.

Its packmates dead or wounded and its body wracked with pain, the wolf lets out a defiant snarl. It fixes its yellow eyes on Nelie and launches into a desperate, beeline charge across the snow-dusted floor. It never reaches its target. As the barrels toward her, Nelie raises her crossbow with deadly calm. The sharp thwack of the string is the only sound in the sudden quiet, and the bolt finds its mark. The wolf collapses mid-stride, its final lunge cut short before it could even begin.

Kish darts forward, his movements a blur against the snow-streaked floor. With a precise thrust, his rapier finds the wolf’s side, and before the beast can even yelp, Kish’s dagger flashes in a finishing arc. The last wolf crumples at his feet, its threat ended in a heartbeat.

In response to Nelie's tyrade of insults, the strange wolf-creature’s ears flatten, and a visible shudder runs through him as her words burrow deep, leaving a psychic sting.

Snarling, the wolfman steps back, boots crunching on broken timber, and raises its bow with practiced speed. But Nelie’s words echo in its mind, a cacophony of doubt and derision. It looses two arrows in rapid succession at Kish, but both shots go wide—one splintering against a fallen beam, the other vanishing into the shadows. The other wolfman, still lurking in the gloom, watches with tense anticipation as the tide of battle shifts, the party’s unity and spirit turning the fight in their favor.

Kethra and Leta surged forward, closing the distance to the wolfman leader, its lips curling back to reveal jagged teeth. Its breath steamed in the cold air.

Nearby, the other unknown creature gripped its primitive spear and lunged at Kethra. The first thrust went wide, but the second found its mark, striking her hard. Kethra staggered, blood staining her armor, and she goes down, unconcious.

Inside the longhouse, Odin slipped through the doorway, eyes locking onto the weakest of the wolfmen. He raised his hand, channeling eldritch energy, and unleashed a crackling blast. The force struck the wolfman squarely, sending it reeling and leaving it badly wounded.

Odin repositions himself, moving to get a clearer shot at the remaining threat. He raises his hand and channels eldritch energy, but his blast goes wide, crackling harmlessly past the creature's head and dissipating in the cold air.

The surviving wolfman roars in fury at the death of its companion, spittle flying from its maw. It grips the elegant longsword with both hands, the blade's silvery radiance casting eerie shadows as it swings twice at Kethra in wild, rage-fueled strikes. Both attacks miss their mark, the creature's anger making it reckless and uncontrolled.

OOC:
Bit of an off-schedule post as I head off for a week of vacation.
Kethra's blade finds its mark with deadly precision, burying itself deep in the chest of the remaining wolfman. The creature staggers, dark blood pooling in the snow, before collapsing with a final, rattling breath.

The battlefield falls silent except for the party's labored breathing and the soft whisper of falling snow. Around them, the carnage tells the story of their hard-fought victory: wolf corpses scattered across the bloodstained ground, and the two wolfmen finally still.

As the adrenaline fades, the party becomes acutely aware of their wounds and exhaustion. They stand battered but triumphant, having faced their first real test in the northern wilderness and emerged victorious.

A small nearby wagon appears to be loaded with stolen goods.

Kethra
The smooth, dark stone is cold in Kethra's hands, its surface marked with angular runes. Her training in the arcane arts serves her well as she traces the activation sequence with practiced precision, perhaps from time helping out in the Ormskirk longhouse. The runes begin to glow faintly at first and then more brightly, forming intricate patterns across the stone's surface.

Raddue sent a note to WhiteDwarf
Nelie and Leta
Nelie approaches the fallen wolf-creatures with cautious steps, her halfling stature allowing her to examine them closely. What she finds disturbs her more than simple wolves would have. These beings are clearly humanoid in build, standing nearly six feet tall, with elongated limbs that end in clawed hands capable of wielding weapons. Their faces blend wolf-like snouts with the bone structure of intelligent beings, and their eyes are positioned more forward-facing like predators that hunt with strategy rather than instinct.

You reach into the pouches across the chests or the wolf-men, finding nothing of real import. The most remarkable find lies beside the larger creature -- a sword clearly not of their craftsmanship. The blade bears elegant scrollwork that spirals down its length like frost patterns, with a crossguard shaped like crescent moons and a grip wrapped in midnight-blue leather. Most remarkably, the entire weapon emanates a soft, silvery radiance like moonlight through winter clouds, casting dim light in a fifteen-foot radius even now.

Raddue sent a note to Synaptic,WanderOne
Johann
Johan moves to examine the overturned wagon with a practiced eye, quickly realizing this wasn't a victim of the attack but rather a tool the wolf-creatures had been using to collect their spoils. The wagon bed is filled with sorted items clearly looted from various buildings throughout the village: silver candlesticks, bundled furs, preserved foods, and other valuables that would be useful to raiders.

Despite the creatures' thorough work, Johan's wilderness experience allows him to spot items they overlooked or discarded as less valuable. Among the debris scattered around the wagon, he finds a mostly intact healer's kit, some preserved rations that will last about two weeks, and winter clothing that appears to be in good condition.

With the immediate supplies secured, Johan turns his attention to the fallen wolves from their earlier encounter. These natural wolves, unlike the strange wolf-men his companions are examining, will provide valuable pelts for the harsh winter ahead. He begins the careful process of skinning them, his skilled hands working methodically while keeping one ear open for his companions' discoveries.

Kish

While Johan focuses on the wagon's contents and the fallen wolves, Kish approaches from a different angle, his keen eyes studying the wagon's construction and the area around it. He notices deep gouges in the wagon's wooden sides where claws have scraped against the wood, and the way the harness traces have been cut rather than unbuckled suggests the creatures freed the draft animals in haste.

Kish circles the wagon, reading the story told by the churned earth and scattered debris. The tracks around the wagon tell of organized activity rather than frenzied looting, with clear patterns showing the creatures worked methodically through the village.

Nelie and Leta

Despite Nelie's best efforts to recall specific details about these wolf-men, the knowledge eludes her grasp like morning mist. She remembers only fragments of old tales told around winter fires - stories of creatures that walked between wolf and man. The details blur together like half-remembered dreams, leaving her with nothing more than the unsettling certainty that these beings are not natural and that their presence here bodes ill for Myrefall and the surrounding villages.

Heavy Armor. Heavier armor interferes with the wearer's ability to move quickly, stealthily, and freely. If the Armor table shows "Str 13" or "Str 15" in the Strength column for an armor type, the armor reduces the wearer's speed by 10 feet unless the wearer has a Strength score equal to or higher than the listed score.

Leta

Leta crouches beside the fallen creatures, her fingers tracing the coarse fur that covers their twisted forms. Despite her years of wilderness experience and the countless hours spent tracking game through the northern forests, these beings defy everything she knows about natural predators. Their proportions are wrong, their movements frozen in death suggest an intelligence that goes beyond mere animal cunning.

The knowledge slips through her grasp like water through cupped hands. She recognizes wolf tracks, can read the signs of pack hunting, but these creatures... they're something else entirely. The unsettling feeling grows that whatever these things are, they don't belong in the natural order she's spent her life learning to understand.

With your permission, I was going to change it up to Studded Leather so that Kethra keeps their full Dex bonus and gets an effective +1 to AC.

The sound of heavy footsteps on packed earth draws attention from the scattered group. A dwarf emerges from the village's outskirts, walking with a kind of aimless purpose that suggests he's been wandering rather than following any clear path. Snow clings to his winter clothing, and his eyes carry the distant look of someone who has seen too much in too short a time. Even from a distance, the bruises and cuts visible on his face and hands tell a story of recent violence.

He pauses at the edge of the longhouse clearing, taking in the scene before him with the slow, deliberate manner of someone processing information that doesn't quite fit together. The fallen wolf-creatures, the overturned wagon, strangers scattered across the area engaged in their various tasks; it's clear he's arrived in the middle of something significant, though the full scope of what has transpired here remains to be discovered.

His legs seem to give out beneath him as he stumbles forward, barely managing to cross the threshold of the longhouse before collapsing to the floor. The impact is heavy, and he lies there motionless for a moment, his breathing labored and shallow. It's clear that whatever he's been through has pushed him to the very edge of his endurance.

Smoke still curled lazily from the blackened timbers of the longhouse. Horgurn Loudbeard stood at the edge of the tree line, boots rooted in frostbitten soil as he stared down at what remained of Myrefall. The village looked like a half-forgotten dream, one that ended in fire and screaming. His axe hung limp in one hand, streaked with dried blood and soot. Tears rolled freely down his cheeks, unnoticed in the cold. He wiped at them once, then again, but they kept coming.

He dropped to his knees, the cold biting through his clothes as if punishing him for surviving. Around him, the wind whispered through the trees, indifferent to his grief. The furrows he had carved into the land, the humble dreams he’d sown there, everything he had worked for was buried beneath the ash and ruin. He tried to take a breath, but it came ragged and broken.

A sound escaped him, rough and low, not quite a sob and not quite a growl. He gripped a fistful of frozen earth until the pain in his fingers anchored him to the moment. There would be a time for vengeance, for answers, for fire in his blood. But not yet. For now, all he could do was kneel in the wreckage and let the weight of what he'd lost pull him down.

Nelie's head snaps up at the sound of someone approaching. She had been preoccupied with studying the strange creatures, but all her collected lore and innumerable stories had given her no clear indication as to the nature of their attackers.

"A survivor...?" She comes to her feet and raises her voice. "We've got a survivor!" On her short legs she start moving through the snow and debris. The strange sword—too large and unwieldy for her—she still keeps clutched in her hand, dragging after her and leaving a trail in the dirt.

"Hey there, friend", she says, speaking softly but still keeping a few feet of distance between them. They had no idea what they were truly dealing with after all, and not all foes might be as obvious as those they had just slain. She tries to look him over, see if he has any obvious wounds, and if his face is one she recognizes. "I'm Nelie, of Ormskirk. We're all from there. Is this...?" She looks around at the utter devastation surrounding them. "Is Myrefall your home?"

Horgurn barely stirred as the voices reached him through the fog of pain and memory. The sound of snow crunching under cautious feet pulled him partway back to the present, and when the halfling’s voice rang out, soft but edged with concern, his eyes slowly lifted to meet hers. They were bloodshot, ringed with exhaustion, and glistening with unshed tears. At her question, he blinked as if trying to process it, then let out a rasping breath, his cracked lips barely moving. "Ye here tae finish the job, then?" he asked hoarsely, voice rough like gravel scraped across iron. His gaze moved between the two strangers, hollow and heavy with grief. "Burn what’s left? Make sure the daft dwarf sticks around long enough tae watch it all rot?" His fingers twitched near the haft of his axe, though there was no real threat in the motion, only instinct and muscle memory clinging tae somethin’ familiar. "If not, I hope ye've got somethin’ better than rags and well wishes, 'cause I dinnae ken what's keepin' me breathin’." He let out a sharp exhale, almost a laugh, though it held no joy. "And if this is some cruel trick, if ye’re with them—those twisted tree-things, those howlin’ beasts—then do it quick and clean. I’m too tired tae fight and too stubborn tae die proper."

Despite a grunt or two of protest, he lets the others help him in silence, jaw clenched and eyes fixed on nothing, as if surrendering even this much cost him more than he’d ever admit.

Nelie lets the others help the wounded dwarf over to their makeshift little camp, but she keeps close and tries to make sense of his mumbled ramblings. She picks up bits of what he says—the tree creatures she'd heard of before, and the howling beasts like those littering the battlefield—enough to start piecing together what he's been through. Given the state he's in, how he's even managed to remain standing is beyond her.

She leaves the sword near the fire. They can work out the details of it later. If the dwarf is from Myrefall, and the creatures took it from one of the residents, he might recognize it. But first they needed time to recover and plan their next step.

"We're not here to hurt you. The Ormskirk council sent us, they'd heard of your troubles. But we had no idea things were this grim." She kneels close to him, and as she speaks she laces her words with subtle magic, trying to lessen the worst of his pain. "You're safe with us. As safe as any of us can be here, anyway."

Horgurn sat still for a long moment, the warmth of the fire and the gentle magic working deeper into his bones, softening the edge of his pain. Slowly, the haze behind his eyes began to clear. He blinked, looked around at the strangers who hadn’t left him to die, and let out a long, weary sigh, as if the weight on his shoulders had shifted just enough to let him breathe. "Aye, council folk, is it?" he muttered, the edge in his voice dulling. "Then ye lot've got steel in yer guts, showin’ up here. Braver than most. Thank ye, lass, that light ye gave me felt like I were drownin’ till just now."

Odin and Kish

The pair moves through the village's outskirts with practiced efficiency, their combined tracking skills allowing them to read the story written in the snow and scattered debris. While they find no living survivors, their search reveals much about what transpired here.

The tracking proves far more challenging than expected. Fresh snow has covered most of the tracks, and what remains visible is barely discernible. It's only through careful examination of the frozen ground beneath the snow that they can piece together what happened. Some of the massive footprints were imprinted in ice that had covered the ground, preserving their shape even as snow drifted over them. Through painstaking effort, they reveal a clear trail leading east from the village, the same massive footprints they observed during their initial investigation, now mostly obscured by fresh snow drifts. The tracks are barely discernible but still followable with their combined expertise, suggesting whatever enormous creature made them passed through here some time ago. Mixed with these familiar tracks are smaller, more recent prints that appear to be from the wolf-creatures they just fought, indicating the area has seen continued activity.

They also find scattered remains in the village's eastern section, not bodies, but personal belongings left behind in obvious haste. A child's wooden toy lies abandoned in the snow, a half-finished meal sits cold on a table, and a door hangs open with footprints leading away from the village center. The pattern suggests the villagers were herded rather than scattered, their departure too organized to be panic-driven flight. Patches of blood stain the snow in several areas, and the ground shows clear signs of struggle where villagers fought back against their attackers. Deep gouges in the earth and scattered debris mark where desperate resistance occurred before the inevitable capture. Notably absent are any weapons, armor, or equipment, and there are no bodies from either side. Everything is simply... gone.

Most promisingly, they discover clear evidence that the villagers were taken east along the same trail as the massive creature. The humanoid tracks are interspersed with larger wolf prints, and there are clear signs of dragging. Deep gouges in the snow show where someone was pulled along, and the humanoid footprints are irregular, suggesting the captives were stumbling or being forced to move. The tracks lead east, following the same direction as the massive creature's trail.

At the mention of other possible survivors, Horgurn’s head snapped up with sudden focus, the dull fog in his eyes giving way to a sharp glint of hope. His body, battered and slow moments ago, seemed to gather itself instinctively as if preparing to rise despite the pain. He leaned forward slightly, his breath catching in his chest, and the set of his jaw tightened, not with anger this time but with urgency. "Survivors, ye said?" he asked, voice low but steady, like a dwarven hammer just before it strikes. The weariness still clung to him, but it was no longer the only thing in his face. Beneath it now burned something fiercer, resolve.

"I need tae save them. I need tae go," Horgurn said, urgency flaring in his voice as he planted a hand in the snow and tried to rise. His muscles strained, his jaw clenched, but his legs gave way beneath him. He dropped hard to one knee, breath hissing through his teeth as fresh pain shot through his ribs. Still, he gritted his teeth and braced himself again, stubborn as stone, refusing to give in to the weakness in his limbs.

Horgurn stayed on one knee for a moment, chest heaving, eyes fixed on the treeline as if sheer will alone could carry him through it. When one of the others urged him to rest, his shoulders stiffened and his lips pressed into a tight line. For a heartbeat it looked like he might argue, but then the pain in his body caught up with him and the fire in his limbs dulled to a heavy ache. He let out a frustrated grunt, then slowly lowered himself back down beside the fire. "Fine," he muttered, eyes still scanning the horizon. "But not for long. They’re out there, and they’ll need me when I can stand."

Horgurn was up before the sun, breath misting in the cold as he sat near the dim coals of the fire, a quiet rhythm already underway. He ran a whetstone along the edge of his woodcutter’s axe, then turned to his stout hammer, worn smooth from years at the forge rather than battle. There was a steadiness to him now, a focus that hadn’t been there the day before, and when the others stirred, they found him more alert, his voice easier, as if the act of preparing his tools had steadied something inside him.

Sleeping like this, far away from the comforts of the Amberwhistle home, was nothing short of brutal. Waking with aching muscles and the beginnings of a cold, Nelie nonetheless concedes that an awful rest is better than no rest at all.

Stretching and straightening out her back, she nods towards Johan and Leta. "Council sent us to help the people of Myrefall, and to find out what's going on. Both those tasks still lie unresolved, I'd say." With a grimace she prepares herself for many more nights like this one.

The dwarf seems to have been up for hours before her. He at least appears to have recovered somewhat. She finds herself a seat nearby as she prepares as much of a breakfast as the others will let her. It won't be a proper halfling meal, but it will have to do.

"Y'know, I don't think I caught your name yesterday? What's your part in all this?" She thinks she has managed to scrape together a pretty good picture of the events, but a little confirmation surely couldn't hurt.

Horgurn looked up from his sharpening, the scrape of stone on steel falling silent as he met the speaker’s gaze. He gave a slow nod, then shifted to sit upright, setting the axe across his lap.

"Name’s Horgurn Loudbeard. Came tae Myrefall last harvest, bought a rough patch o’ land and worked it meself, stone by stone, tree by tree. Thought I’d found a place tae settle, quiet and steady. But then the sky turned strange, beasts poured from the woods, and some great twisted tree-thing marched through fire and screams. I tried tae stand against it, but it broke me down. When I woke, the village was ash. If there’s any still breathin’ out there, I aim tae find them."

Horgurn fell quiet and stared into the middle distance, his eyes unfocused, lost in a thought he kept to himself.
Jul 24, 2025 11:39 pm
Kethra gathers her companions for a quick discussion, then uses the Sending Stone before they turn in for the night.
Quote:
Myrefall razed, looted, estimate days ago. Attackers wolfmen, many wolves. Possible calculated violence, dark magic. Survivors captured taken east. One dwarf rescued. Awaiting further instructions.
The runes on the stone pulse with renewed energy as the council's response comes through, Thorgrim's voice carrying the weight of grim understanding: "Tree wisps attack Ormskirk again. Wolfmen threat confirmed. We hold but need Odin's magic. Send him back immediately. Pursue attackers east. Find survivors."

The stone's glow fades as the connection ends, leaving Kethra with the council's clear directive. The message confirms what they've already discovered - the situation is dire, and the council needs them back in Ormskirk to plan their next move.

OOC:
