[ +- ] Amos of Laststand
Feb 25, 2025 2:02 pm
Amos stands at the edge of the plains and woods. He knows what lies behind him in the lands of his people but ahead are lands he haas never seen. Those hunters that enter these lands do not speak of them to the young though Amos is sure bits of their experience are still taught. Still the lore of Lastland is still young and there are often gaps that prove to be fatal. To the east lie the rolling grasslands, open to the sky with only low rolling hills and the tall grass for cover. To the west are woods taller and thicker than he is familiar with and full of life, ad death no doubt.

He must survive a month beyond the lands known to the people of Lastland and bring back new knowledge to the lodge. All he knows is that deep within the woods to the west are the Kingdoms and somewhere to the east are the Freeholds. This knowledge comes from the time that Lastland left the other kingdome. Since then kittle contact with other nations has occured. Now the choice of where to go is up to him.

"Promise me."

The words his mother spoke rang loudest now that he was finally alone. Plenty of people had come to the gate of Laststand to see him off. His mother, his trainers, his friends... Amanda. He hadn't expected her to show up to his departure; off to the east, the sun barely began to peek over the horizon, but she said she would miss him. The thought brought a sheepish smile to his previously somber visage.

A shadow flew overhead, and Amos jerked his head up at noticing. Just a hawk, he realized. Not an uncommon sight, but the fraction of a second of panic reminded the hunter that he was now on his own and out in the open.

Three goals lay on the mind of any young would-be hunter when they go through their trial: to reach the freehold beyond the plains to the east, although the terrain is open and exposed for a single man; to re-establish contact with the kingdoms of our motherland beyond the deep woods; or simply to survive for one month, for even that isn't an easy task.

Resolute, and taking one last glance at the rising sun beyond the plains, Amos placed one foot in front of the other and headed forth west toward the forest, his boots landing soundlessly on the gravel of the paved path.

"Promise me".

As you proceed for into thr woods you point about the trails. While convenient surely trees roots and grass must push their way into them.
How is it mainframe and by whom? It's it safe to travel?

Debating staying on tht trail or cutting cross country you almost let your thighs wander but refocus on the present. The trees grow taller, denser, and twisted with age as the you ventures deeper into the wild woods. The sunlight filtering through the canopy turns golden-green, shifting strangely with the rustling leaves. The air is thick with earthy scents—moss, damp bark, the faint sweetness of unseen flowers, and something wilder, something ancient.

Birdsong fades as a hush settles over the deeper woods. The trees bear subtle markings—claw scores. As you scan your surroundings you glimpse a movement just beyond some brush. Then you see a massive elk . It stumbles as it catches sight of you then whirls to flee. As it does you see a strange wound on its flank. One entire haunch is a festering mass oozing puss and thick blood. The elk is still strong but the injury robs it of it's normal grace allowing you to hear it's passage deeper into the woods.
Feb 26, 2025 5:20 pm
Amos listens to the choir of forest sounds and approaches the fallen beast. The elk snorts and wheezes as he does; its head pressing into the hard-packed detritus on the forest floor; its eyes look off into the distance, bewildered.

"What happened to you?" Amos wonders as he draws his bow and aims it at the animal's golden triangle, the area behind its front leg that'll allow his arrow to pierce its heart. "May Talos relieve you of this pain."

...

Amos draws.
OOC:
Looking to coup de grace this poor animal. Also, would like to do a heal check to determine what caused the injury on its flank, and a perception check to determine whether anything or anyone is approaching.

I was having network issues on the train and ended up posting from my phone, so there were some typos I fixed. It should not have died immediately but is wounded and weakened.
Not quite combat but still a combat skill so
If you want to shoot it you can roll a test 2d6. Adding in focus and marksman that will hit on any dice with a 3 or higher.
or
Give chase.

Amos stop on his tracks with a startle as a great elk becomes visible in a past the shrubbery of a small clearing. This would be a prized kill if he were going back to Laststand, but as things stand, a kill here would only serve to slow Amos. The animal, seemingly on alert, immediately looks over to lock eyes with the young hunter. Elk are big animals, less perceptive than redtail deer by nature, and often opting to charge at danger.

Now, as this elk flees, the sight of a nasty wound on its hind haunch gives Amos an uneasy feeling. Without outright breaking into a chase, Amos walks to the edge of the clearing, keeping an ear to the ground for anything else that may be approaching, then, with a start, he heads to follow the path of the elk. Is he not a warden of this forest, after all?
OOC:
Please consider this a retcon post, lol. Amos isn't interested in killing the elk for food or as a trophy, but the strange wound piques his interest. I will roll a 2d6 test to follow the elk tracks, without breaking into a running chase, of course.

Rolls

Tracking (elk) - (2d6)

(23) = 5

tracking advantage - (1d6)

(6) = 6

[ +- ] Tracker
OOC:
Your tracking trait gives you advantage, added it to your post, Huzzah!
Amos is able to track the elk and soon catches up. Staying hidden and at a distance, for now, you can see the elk is staggering and keeps bumping into trees as it passes. Knowing such beast are typically careful of their movements it is obvious that the wound has taken both strength and caution from it. With more time to study the wound you can see that the area around the 4 horizontal slashes is extremely discolored. You might assume infection but the strange purple and green colors do not look natural. The elk wanders for a while, grazing on ocasional plants before heading towards the sound of a stream.

The sight of the elk's wound rings bells of alarm within the head if Amos; four horizontal slashes, a swipe... but from what? Or from who?

A bear or perhaps a shadow cat may have been able to injure this beast as such, but why would either predator allow the elk to escape?

The question gnaws at Amos' train of thought as he continues to stalk the beast. Suddenly, realization strikes him: who's stalking who?

Amos continues to follow the path of the elk until he hears the babbling sounds of a stream. Confident in his abilities as a stalker and as a hunter, he picks and climbs up a tree with line of sight towards the creek. He is concerned about the elk, but he is also aware that he is not the only hunter in this forest.

The elk stumbles to the running water and immerses itself before stumbling and moving back to the bank to drink. Amos exhales and he looks back in the direction they had come from, only to see...
OOC:
Thanks for the heads up with trait advantage; I'll be sure to keep those in mind!
Amos assumes that some predator must be stalking the elk (and him incidentally after he thrust himself into the situation). Now, he wants to see what predator that may have been. Please let me know if climbing or picking a tree should be a roll, or if anything emerges from the underbrush onto the path they came from.

The back track of the elk is clear of any predators. After some consideration you come to two possibilities.
1. The wounds are fresh and whatever is infecting it is potent and foreign to you. Guessing by the size of the claw marks on the elk the predator is at least as large as a hinting cat, though likely larger. Perhaps it lack speed and hunts by stealth, landing a single blow to inflict its poisons then trailing slowly by scent to finish of its prey after it's toxins have drained all strength.
2. The wounds are old and whatever infected the elk hunts for more than food. Though rare among animals there are some creatures that hunt for the pleasure of the hunt, feeding on the fear, pain, and death, more than the flesh of the creatures they slay.

As you consider the possibilities you catch sight of the puss and fluids of the creature's wound washing off of its wounds in the stream, with potential dark implications. The elk is now delirious and staggers even more, then collapses not to far from the stream, the exertion of crossing it proving too much. The elk lays panting as its eyes roll around in its head before closing as it lays panting.
Feb 28, 2025 4:47 pm
Upon seeing the beast collapse, Amos abandons his train of thought and rushes to the animal. The elk is delirious and nearing death. Amos pulls his bow and aims an arrow at the golden triangle of the beast, the section on its side that'll lead to a shot to the heart and a humane kill, as taught in the Hunter's Lodge.

Amos shoots and the panting stops.
OOC:
I assume no roll is needed to coup de grace?
Now then? What now? The Lodge teaches not to waste meat, but this elk is certainly too big to dry or ration for Amos, not to mention... Amos sneered while gazing at the animals' still festering wound. The young hunter pulls his arrow out of the beast and takes out a dagger, with which he pokes at the wound.
OOC:
Amos inspects the dead elk's wound. Perhaps he can detect poison, rot, or some other natural agent besides puss? Furthermore, if he does detect poison of some sort or come to the conclusion that this may be a stalking predator, Amos will attempt to set a trap for this creature. Would this be equipment that he owns or something that he'd need to fashion or McGyver in the woods?

Rolls

Inspecting wounds (elk) - (2d6)

(24) = 6

OOC:
I used Tests for conflicted activities, combat, persuasion, concealment, etc. I also use rolls to add a bit of randomness. But narrating through things is fine too. Totally appropriate for this.
The elk is sent swiftly to the next stage of life and you look over its remains. The wound looks to have a combination of poison and infection. You doubt the meat of any part of the animal would be safe to eat but the hide, except near the wound, bones, and sinew should all be useful.

Gaging by the depth of the wound whatever hit the elk had some power, either from muscle, wight, of a drop. With a toxin like this you doubt whatever did this has many natural enemies and may lack in caution, but best be safe nevertheless. Looking around the area you find a dry streambed not far from where the elk fell. Properly baited it would make an excellent place to trap. One trap up hill away from the flowing stream and another near where the dry streambed meets up with the one still carrying water.

Roll a Test. Add any details you would like. I allow character actions and player ideas to influence test results.

Amos did not bring any hunting traps alongside his person for this trial. Other hunters have, in the past, but the general consensus is that these are too unwieldy, and large game needn't be sought after for the survival of an individual. However, he did bring materials with which to craft a snare.

The predator has heft, certainly, and it likely has no fear of predation from other creatures in the forest; it won't be shy around Amos and a simple trap snare is unlikely to hold up against its heft, so Amos resolved to go for an alternative: a trap that could prove lethal, a drowning snare... no.

Amos takes a deep breath and takes a moment to listen to the forest. No sounds of alarm or reason to panic; he is getting worked up over nothing. The young hunter looks up to the sky, noticing the sun approaching its position atop the noon sky, and resolves to delve deeper into the forest and put distance between him and the elk. Then, before long, he will need to fashion shelter for himself.

With a huff, he leaves the scene, doing a silent prayer to Talos with his hand as he does so. Out here, the only rule is to survive.
OOC:
Rolling to build adequate shelter before nightfall once I've gotten far enough away from the spot where the elk died. Amos will establish shelter near earsight of the stream, not directly near it. Rolling with advantage for Survivalist.

Rolls

shelter - (3d6)

(642) = 12

Post proposed actions in character. OOC is for Player communication about story/system/IRL
While specific actions are useful you can also explain your intent of the actions. Not all people have common backgrounds and ways of thinking so extrapolating intent to the next step is not always straight forwards. Telling me your intent lets me add other actions without pausing the story for your feedback. This can speed up the story through scenes that have little impact on the story.
Not sure what the plan is beyond building a shelter so . . .
Amos is able to find a suitable location and craft a simple shelter easily that will suffice for one night quick enough and is done in under an hour. Being a hunter he is familiar with sleeping without any shelter but it will add a bit of safety and comfort.

OOC:
Yeah... not sure what the plan is either. Now that you put it like that, guess I was never really expecting this to be a long-lasting thing anyways. You mentioned that you have another game intended for longer-term play, I may sign up there instead assuming there's a group forming.

OOC:
That's fine. This is more to get people familiar with the system, site, and RPG. My intro stories typically have around 3 scenes or so and go through combat, Tests, Save, and a bit of role play. I do have another player I can route you to this week if you feel a group would work better, some players do better with others to play off of. If you feel comfortable I can ping the other GM or you can do so yourself. The other Game it the Tiny Shattered Lands

Just let me know your plan/prefference
