4. The First Expedition

Nov 1, 2024 8:59 am
You spend the night in the bunkroom of the Broken Head, some of you sleeping more peacefully than others.

Waking to the sound of rain falling on the inn’s roof, you eat breakfast in the common room and prepare to depart.

Spell casters - what spells have your memorised?

All - what’s the plan for the day?

"Thrudmarr, my big friend," Jacky remarks over the breakfast porridge. "I had a thought when I woke up this morning. It's well and good for Billie to carry mine and Ella's" -he nods at the elf- "things to and from the Halls, but a mule might have trouble making his way down there! Do you have space in your bags to help us out?"
OOC:
That would be:
- Rations (7 days); 14 lbs
- Waterskin, filled (3 pints); 4 lbs
- Arrows (24); 8 lbs
- Bedroll; 5 lbs; Ella's

Ella observed Zacharias’ difficult sleep for a few hours, as he rolled in his bunk bed and occasionally grunted in a semblance of distress. The whole episode with the phantom made her realise the fundamental difference in perspective between elves such as her, and the more short-lived folk. She did eventually sleep, lightly as she always did.

As the others began to stir, they found her seated cross-legged on her bed, deep in concentration as she pored over a rather large tome, a single candle nearby giving a soft, warm light. She once again committed powerful mystic runes to memory, in hopes of fixing them in her mind until the critical moment where she would call upon those words of power to elicit some uncanny, and certainly most unnatural, effect upon the world. Common folk feared the users of magic, and they were right to do so.
OOC:
Ella will be memorising charm person, in case we need it to persuade these halflings we’ve heard about to let us into the halls without extorting us for a license… given the opposition they had faced so far, her usual choice of a soporific effect that could put a number of foes to sleep seemed unadapted.

Once she had finished her mystical preparations, Ella came to the common room and took breakfast along those still seated. She ate heartily for one as small as she, though the coarser food predominant in archontean lands was not always the easiest to digest.

"So, up the pyramid, and try to find the pathway down? Meet these wand-waving periannath, I mean, halflings? Or try to climb onto the tower on the square with the large awakened trees?"
Nov 1, 2024 6:16 pm
Zacharias blinked his eyes as his consciousness slowly arose from the evil nightmares. Looking down at his body, he was once again overwhelmed by a feeling of melancholy and dread. Half of my life, gone in an instant; is it even worth getting up?. Groaning, he slowly twisted up from the bed, and performed his morning ablutions. Packing his meager belongings in their various containers, he made his way down the stairs to the inn's breakfast offering. With a bowl of porridge, a mug of tea, and a fresh roll with butter, Zach made his way over to his companions.

Taking a seat at the table, Zach greeted the group. Good morning, Masters Thrushbeard and Jasper, and Lady Envelope. I hope you all slept better than I did. Is it true that Master Vixen decided to return home? Are we to proceed below strength? Exhausting his immediate questions, Zach began to eat.
Nov 1, 2024 7:37 pm
Thrudmarr wakens early. After a big breakfast, he carefully sharpens and wipes down his axe while talking to it softly, telling it they might find more adventure today.

When Jacky asks about carrying extra weight, he frowns while surveying the amount of gear the mule was carrying.

"Hmmm Thurdmarr already carry much stuff. Make Thrudmarr move slow if carry more. Slow bad if need to run from more trees! But if friends need help, Thrudmarr can carry."
OOC:
I can carry, but it'll put me at Heavy encumbrance level and just a few pounds away from putting me in the highest encumbrance level. I will be slowed to 60' movement which looks like most the party is at anyways so no big deal. But I won't have much room for treasure after that!
Nov 1, 2024 11:45 pm
"Visiting the pyramid gets my vote," Jacky says. "After all, that's what each of us are here for, isn't it?"
OOC:
Ah, nevermind. I managed to pare it down to bare necessities, but something like a bag of holding would not go amiss, heh.

@matmaisan Afraid you'll have to sort out whether to leave Ella's bedroll on Billie or something else!

"Do you think we’ll be spending a night underground? If so, I will carry the bedroll. I can get rid of it, if it is slowing me down."
OOC:
Ella is just above her encumbrance maximum for 90’ movement. If she eats rations or empties her water skin, she’ll be fine. She just can’t drop her backpack: that contains her spell book, the only item she considers more valuable than her bow.

"Pyramid sound good." Thrudmarr says between mouthfulls of breakfast. "Maybe find statues to bring fancy men. Need more money for food and beds."
OOC:
Ella if you need me to carry some extra rations around I can make some room.
Nov 3, 2024 12:26 am
OOC:
I have around 15lb free before I drop from 60' to 30'.
Nov 3, 2024 7:42 am
"That’s kind of you, master Grimidek. I accept your offer, but I will take back the weight of it bothers you. Your dwarven shoulders should be free to move…"
OOC:
With the bedroll, Ella is at 82.5 encumbrance, which places her in the 6" movement bracket. Without it she drops to 77.5 and can move at 9". Since she has infraction and is not wearing metal armor, she could scout ahead, increasing chance of surprise to 4 out of 6. The extra speed would be required for running back to the party in panic…

Leaving the warm and dry of the Broken Head behind, you set out into the grey, damp morning. Retracing your steps from the previous evening, you re-enter Arden Vul through the North Gate, the guards in the gate towers wishing you a cheery "good luck!". Once inside the city walls, you follow the cobbled boulevard south.

The pyramid of Thoth is 90’ square and rises 45’ above the floor of the city. At the summit is a 30’-square platform, on top of which is a stone canopy supported by marble pillars.

Marble steps, worn at their centres from traffic, rise on each side of the pyramid to the central platform. An image has been carved into the exact centre of each riser. Four images alternate, such that there are multiple examples of each. These images are as follows:

Jacky squats to take a closer look at the carvings on the steps. These were the gods that tallfolk worshipped in the past, weren't they? "Look, those must be pictures of Thoth," he comments to the others. "At least the first three pictures. I've never seen a baboon."
OOC:
[ +- ] Rumor
The second picture is the most interesting. Was Thoth receiving something valuable from the tallfolk, or was he giving it to them?
Nov 3, 2024 1:22 pm
Ellagel seemed quite happy to leave the Broken Head and to cross back into the ruins. The ascension up the pyramid was slow and deliberate: by then she had stringed her bow and readied an arrow, and she kept vigilant as she continued up the steps. She was so focused that she barely registered the patterns in the engravings, and only Jacky’s observations made her stop to consider these pictographs for a few moments.

"Nice find Jacky. Looks like if the followers of Thoth were devout, they were rewarded. Also looks like there will be plenty of statues to take back to those merchants, if luck is on our side."
Nov 3, 2024 1:47 pm
The halfling considers the elf's words. Based on the pictures, these things stood taller than anyone Jacky had ever met. "They'd be a bit hard to move, don't you think? Although, being enchanted, maybe we can get them to follow us back up. Now wouldn't that be a sight!"
Nov 3, 2024 3:19 pm
"Thrudmarr no want to meet big statue that can walk. Tired of running from big things, need enemy he can chop!" He scratches his head. "Maybe find smaller treasure to take? Anyway, how we get in?" Thrudmarr looks around the platform, his eyes scanning for any obvious entrances.

The newly melancholic Zacharias follows the group. Does it really matter, Master Jellyroll, what the images represent? We are here to descend, find some treasure, ascend, sell it, and repeat until we are satisfied or dead. Right Lady Evergreen? Zach checks his sword and shield. Im with Thrustmark. Let’s get moving.
Nov 3, 2024 8:54 pm
Ella nods. She looks up at the marble pillars and the stone canopy above.

"That way, she pointed.
OOC:
I understand we have not yet reached the top. The entrance, Ella presumes, is up there.
Nov 3, 2024 8:56 pm
Grim waddles up the steps. He glares at the glyphs warily through brown bulging eyes.
Aye, the diety receives gifts from subjects and rules over them if their sacrifices are favorable to him. Such is de normal premise across all de mythos.
Nov 3, 2024 9:15 pm
"Well, sir Zucchini," Jacky says to the despondent warrior, "These very images may hold the key to finding any such treasure in the first place!"

"And who knows, divine magic may hold the key to restoring your lost years as well." he adds, turning back after he's climbed a few steps with Billie in tow.

The Pyramid of Thoth
You ascend the marble steps to the 30’ x 30’ platform at the top of the pyramid, the floor of which is sheathed in white marble. A dark grey granite canopy rises 30’ above the platform to accommodate the enormous statue of Thoth. Purple porphyry* columns support the canopy. Crouching at the foot of each column is a heavily pitted 4’-tall statue of a crouching baboon, with its mouth slightly open as if barking.

The 20’-tall statue of Thoth represents the epitome of the sculptor’s trade. Carved out of a solid block of porphyry, and topped with a white marble ibis head, the statue is truly awe-inspiring. Two grapefruit-sized lumps of shaped jade serve as eyes. The god’s arms rest flat at his side.

Directly in front of the statue of Thoth is a 10’ x 5’ section of pavement that is obviously distinct from the rest of the platform.

https://i.imgur.com/Ne0gmDW.jpeg

* If, like me, you didn’t know what "porphyry" is, it’s a purple-red stone.

Is it reasonable that Billie could climb the 120 stairs up the pyramid? Does anyone have any expert mule knowledge? I have no idea!

Don’t try to pry out those eyes. I’ve heard these tales before Zach said as he made sure to stand far away from the obvious (to him) trap in front of the statue. fool me once…
Nov 4, 2024 8:33 pm
"If such pretty gems could’ve been pried away, they’d have been long gone," the elf commented. "Maybe we must pray, or make offerings before the god opens the way?"

With the fine senses of her elven heritage Ella began to consider the distinct section of pavement in front of the statue. Could it be a passage? If so, how could it be activated?
OOC:
The illustration shows some iconography on this different section, but perhaps that’s the illustrator’s creative license speaking? Basically Ella is actively looking for concealed/secret doors in the area immediately in front of the statue. Did it look probable that the slab of different pavement slid downwards, or opened upwards? Were there any markings on the white marble suggesting such movement was possible?
Nov 4, 2024 9:10 pm
Jacky taps the elf on the shoulder. "Look at the statue, Ella! Its arms are raised in the pictures we saw. Both arms in the first where there's people going down."

He raps his ten foot pole on the inscribed section of the floor. If the stone is thick, it wouldn't matter, but if not maybe it would sound different from the other tiles for being hollow beneath.
OOC:
Hardly an expert, but a search online does seem to show stairs being possible for mules.

I'll make the map of the summit later.
Nov 5, 2024 9:18 am
"May be the supplication of its followers is what opens the way, and has him raise his arms, arms that must be then filled with valuable sacrifice to satiate his godly needs," she spoke, while examining the floor for any indication of a secret passage, or a mechanism able to activate it.
OOC:
I've always heard that mules were sure-footed and used to discern the safest path up or down a hillside. That doesn't give them the exceptional skills of a mountain goat for climbing, but certainly suggest they can handle stairways.

By the by, that's an excellent little map you've produced, @testlum !

"When arms up, stairs come! We just lift arms, easy! Want me to do?" Thrudmarr flexes his muscles and looks around the group, awaiting their approval before trying anything.

The Pyramid of Thoth
There is a hollow sound when Jacky taps the distinct floor section with his 10’ pole. It certainly appears to be a hatch or covering of some sort. However, there’s no obvious way of opening it. You cannot simply lift it up.

Grim stoops low, to the hallowed floor. Which, takes no time at all, at just over four feet tall, he doesn’t have far to go!
Examining the floor around the area of the hatch, our dwarven fellow checks for markings or interesting stonework that might uplift the latch.

"We don't have any jewels to offer Thoth," Jacky says. "Let's give your plan a try, Thrudmarr."

The halfling walks behind the statue and braces his pole against the other arm, ready to push.
Nov 6, 2024 2:39 pm
"Stand back everyone! Thrudmarr got this!"

Thrudmarr rolls his shoulders in preparation as he approaches the statue. He positions himself at the opposite arm Jacky braced his pole on and attempts to push it up into a 90' angle as per the first image.

The arms of the statue do indeed rotate at the shoulder. In fact, they move rather smoothly and easily.

Without much effort, Thrudmarr raises the left arm by 90 degrees so that it is parallel to the ground.

Nothing happens.

Is Jacky going to push the right arm similarly?

The stairs are only 5’ wide so, if you want to descend it will have to be in single file. Please check your marching order and update if necessary. Unless you tell me otherwise, I’ll assume Belisarious simply takes Vasco’s position.

The only XP you've earned so far is a small amount of mapping XP courtesy of Jacky/Testlum (below). The vast majority of your XP will come from finding and safely recovering treasure (which, at this point in the campaign, probably means depositing it in Gosterwick, the nearest town). The only other source of XP is defeating enemies. But, to answer, the question, I award XP whenever you earn it. But, to level up, you will need to undergo training (OSRIC page 123).

Stairs
You commence your descent into the pyramid. The stairs are composed of rough granite blocks and have seen heavy use. The walls and ceiling of the stairwell look like they were originally plastered and decorated, but only tiny shreds of plaster remain.

The stairs continue due north for around 100’ before arriving at a small landing, the walls of which are covered with graffiti of many vintages and natures.

At this landing the stairs change direction, turning to the south. Looking down the stairway, about another 100’ ahead of you, you can see that the stairs open into a lit area.

Jacky pauses to take a gander at the graffiti. At the least, it would broaden his understanding on just what sort of art the tallfolk enjoy! Can he see the difference between the graffiti and anything that was originally on the wall, if any?

Thrudmarr's eyes light up at Jacky's suggestion.

"Yes, everyone see Thrudmarr was here and know he great hero of Arden Vul!" Setting down his axe for a moment, he fumbles in his pouch for his chalk with his free hand. While Jacky's inspecting the graffiti, he finds a clear spot and writes his name while holding the lantern steady. He concentrates hard, tongue sticking out slightly as he writes out "THЯUD" in childish scrawl.

He continues holding the lantern high to illuminate the area for the party.
Nov 9, 2024 8:45 pm
The flickering torchlight sent odd shadows across the walls of this landing, distorting expressions and making the graffiti dance under her gaze.

As Thrudmar and Jacky busied themselves with the wall, the elf decided to take advantage of the short pause to start moving slowly down the south-leading stairs.

"I’ll be right back", she whispered, before disappearing beyond the torchlight.

She was betting on her elven light-footedness to carry her undetected closer to the illuminated chamber below. A brief scouting mission.
OOC:
Ella will move south without light, giving herself time for her infravision to kick in before she continued her descent. She would like to get some 30 feet away from the next chamber and see what can be seen, before deciding to move forward or back to the group to report.

Nov 10, 2024 11:17 am
Whilst the others pause on the landing to study, or contribute to, the graffiti, Ella descends the next flight of stairs, which lead her south. She continues for 70’, pausing 30’ before the stairway opens into a larger chamber. The most noticeable thing about this space is how brightly and consistently it is lit. There is none of the characteristic flickering of a torch, nor the dull yellow light of a lantern. The space is lit almost as brightly as if it were daylight.

From Ella’s current position, much of the chamber is obscured. She can see that the stairway intersects with the westernmost section of the chamber’s northern wall and that the space is 20’ deep ahead of her. However, she cannot see how far it extends east of the stairway (to Ella’s left). The chamber’s rough stone walls are also covered in graffiti.

Back on the landing, whilst Thrud leaves his mark, Jacky, Grim and Zach peruse the graffiti in search of anything useful.

Sorry, missed that. No, whilst there are telltale signs that the wall was once plastered and decorated, very little of that now remains. Certainly not enough to discern anything. All the graffiti has been chalked or scratched onto the underlying stone.

Zach’s graffiti …

XXX

Zach’s eyes are drawn to a pornographic sketch that is best left to your imagination!

Meanwhile, Ella moves closer to the illuminated chamber at the bottom of the next flight of stairs. Peering inside she sees a square room that is 20’ x 20’. The staircase meets the chamber at the westernmost section of the northern wall. Within the chamber there are only two noticeable features … just to her left is a circle made from bits of stone that has been used as a fire pit. And, along the central 10’ section of the eastern wall, another flight of stairs descends northwards even deeper into the halls. Other than the two staircases, there are no other visible exits.

Well, that's interesting. I wonder if I could find someone with whom to try THAT, Zach thought. If I ever survive this adventure, I have ten years of catching up to do. Finding no Mithric to study, Zach spends some time in a pleasant erotic daydream, but gathers his wits about him and heads down after Ellagel.

Finding himself underwhelmed by the graffiti, Jacky opts to meet up with the elf as well. He blinks a few times, eyes adjusting to the shine ahead after the dark. "Would you look at that," the halfling murmurs. Something about the light makes it seem proper to lower his voice. "Do you reckon if we chip off some stone from this place, it would keep on glowing?"

I think it’s reasonable to assume that Ellagel would recognise this as a continual light spell.

Down. And down. And down.

The next flight of stairs, which are both steep and cramped, seems endless. You catch the odd glimpse of the decorations that must have once graced the walls (a flash of gold paint here, a blue beak there), but today the stairway is blackened with soot, grime and more graffiti.

Eventually, after a full hour of cautious descent, the stairs open into a large chamber lit by guttering torches. You estimate you must now be some 300-400 feet below the surface.

The room is dominated by a massive 15’ tall statue of ibis-headed Thoth at its centre. The perfectly proportioned and lifelike human body stands on a granite pedestal (3’ tall) and is carved of black onyx. In classic Egyptian fashion, Thoth’s right foot is advancing slightly, whilst his arms hang at his side. Thoth’s ibis head is made of white marble, although the eye sockets are empty. At the foot of the statue is a large stone chest that is part of the pedestal.

The plaster on the room’s walls has been badly damaged, but the decorated ceiling plaster, 30’ above you, appears largely intact. However, there’s insufficient light to pick out any details; the ceiling is too high.

A substantial amount of debris - wrecked furniture, destroyed armour and equipment, bits of bone and leather - has accumulated in the corners of the chamber. There is dust everywhere, although clear paths lead from the stairs to archways in the eastern, southern and western walls, and to a door in the northwest corner of the room. There are also other exits (see below) that don’t appear to be heavily trafficked. No dust is found around the central statue.

A body is slumped against the western wall.

Mapping information: rectangular chamber, 70’ x 60’*. The stairs you arrive by enter at the middle of the northern wall. There are eight other apparent exits - clockwise from the stairs:

- A door in the easternmost section of the northern wall.
- An archway in the eastern wall, 20’ south of the northern wall.
- An archway in the eastern wall, 40’ south of the northern wall.
- A door in the easternmost section of the southern wall.
- An archway in the middle of the southern wall.
- A door in the westernmost section of the southern wall.
- An archway in the western wall, 30’ south of the northern wall.
- A door in the westernmost section of the northern wall.

*I will always quote room dimensions as (west->east) x (north->south).

I recommend using 10’ squares for mapping (the maps I am working from have that scale).

"Looks like someone pried out the gemstone eyes already. I wonder what Thoth had to say to them about that." Jacky will approach the ibis-headed statue and prod gently at its arms with his ten-foot pole, to see if they're mobile like the one upstairs.

If he doesn't get mangled, Jacky cautions the others not to mess with the chest at its foot. "No dust. I think this thing moves."

As soon as she enters the vast new chamber, Ellagel scans the different exits from the room, most of which are shrouded in shadows, given the irregular lighting emanating from the different torches. The elf approached the closest torch sconce, and studied how long the torch must have been burning in this room; torches burned for roughly an hour: if the room was illuminated by consumables, someone must return to this chamber often to replenish the sources of illumination. She suspected these torches were perhaps yet another source of magical lighting: the elf approached an exposed finger to determine if the torch produced heat, as well as light. Once she was satisfied with these preliminary examinations, she would move to the southern wall's central archway, careful to approach it obliquely. She wanted to have a look at what might lay beyond the portal.

Zacharias, having a healthy fear of prodding the unknown drilled into him over the past two days—or was it ten years—stays well to the middle of the room. When there would be something to slice, he would slice it. Until then, let the others do the poking and the prodding.

Jackie tentatively prods the arms of the giant statue with his ten-foot pole to check if they are moveable. Indeed they are. They are pinned at the shoulders and rotate in the same manner as the statue at the top of the pyramid. (I've assumed you've only nudged them gently at this point and haven't attempted to move them to any significant extent.)

Meanwhile, Ellagel checks the room’s torches. They appear entirely normal, giving out heat and light in exactly the way she would expect. Moving to examine the central southern archway, all she can see is that a passageway extends from it for at least 20’ due south. That is as far as the light sources in the current room extend, and those light sources disrupt her infravision. The corridor is 10’ wide, has a 10’ high ceiling, and is of the classical Archontean construction of plaster-coated stone walls. The plaster is more complete here than on the stairway, revealing the original frescoes to a greater extent.

The body that Grim and Thrudmarr examine appears to have been slain recently. There are wounds to the chest and left arm that look to have been inflicted by some sort of weapon. It’s clear the body has already been looted - the pockets are turned out and the boots have been removed. However, Thrudmarr’s rummage does reveal a scroll stuffed into the corpse's trousers. It’s incomprehensible to Thrudmarr, but Grim recognises it as containing a "Find Traps" spell.

Err ... I have no idea how easy or difficult it is to tell how much light is left in a torch by looking at it. Torches burn for 1 hour. Let's say, as far as Ella can tell, she reckons there's no more than 20 minutes of illumination left. But it could be less than that. If anyone has any specialist torch knowledge, please advise!

The corpse is a human male.

His grip tightens around his axe, eyes darting between the rooms many dark entrances. The flickering torchlight casts shifting shadows that make every doorway seem to hide some lurking beast, and Thrudmarr can't help but imagine what sort of horrible creature might return at any moment.

I don't know much about torches myself, but given their central role in medieval illumination practices, I'd imagine fantasy characters should have a general idea of how long the flames would last. Nov 22, 2024 7:34 pm
Jasper, can you tell how long has that body has been dead? Has it perished from fright, perhaps? Zach's mind cannot escape his encounter with the specter at the base of the mountain.
Nov 23, 2024 9:23 am
Jacky calls for the rest of the party to stand still and stoops to examine the dust and debris around the corpse. Apart from the disturbances created by Grim and himself, the only other prints show traffic to and from the location of the body along an east-west direction. There are no obvious signs of a scuffle - just prints going back and forth - suggesting the body was perhaps dumped here.

The corpse seems relatively fresh. Probably dead for a matter of hours rather than days. The visible wounds to the body’s chest and left arm appear to be the likely cause of death.

Just as Jacky rises from his crouched position, you hear a voice call out from the east.

"Well, well, well … what do we have here? A new party of adventurers? You’ll be wanting to purchase a licence, no doubt. Good job you found us!"

The greeting, which is delivered in a cheery and welcoming fashion, comes from a rather grizzled-looking halfling. He is followed by five other halflings who are all wearing studded leather armour and carrying spears and shields. From the light cast by the leader’s torch, you can see that they’ve emerged through an iron gate that is set 10’ east of the southernmost archway on the eastern wall.

He raises an eyebrow at the grizzled halfling. "You've met him, haven't you? Guy who looks at you like you're something stuck to the bottom of his boot?"

"Listen, we're just the help. He hasn't paid us yet. If it's gold you want, you need to talk to the boss."

Ella kept a quiet stance from where she was next to the southern door, considering rather urgently if she ought to take an action she had considered overnight. Enchanting the halting leader, or one of his aides, was not a safe proposition. An enchantment could fail, and it would only take one of them out of the confrontation.
OOC:
In AD&D charm person could be used on any "person" regardless of hit dice. According to Osric, p. 70 "The powerful enchantment woven by this spell will affect any "person," meaning character races (but note that elves are 90% resistant), and humanoids (as defined in Chapter V) up to a ceiling of one hit die of charmed creatures per character level at any one time". Does this mean Ella can only charm a 1HD person? Or does this mean that at any one time, the spell-caster cannot charm an additional individual if she already has a number of HD equal to their level under charm? If the former, she would have definitely prepared a sleep spell instead of charm person for this day.

Waiting for a ruling on what charm person can accomplish. Assuming I cannot charm someone with more than one hit die, and the DM does not agree to a retconning of her spell preparation (I should have read the description before...), she'll probably cast the spell on the halfling leader before violence erupts, hoping for the best.

OSRIC is our primary rules source, and the ruleset for which Arden Vul was written, so we will always defer to OSRIC unless there is some ambiguity (as was the case with weapon specialisation). Actually, the OSRIC description of Charm Person is considerably clearer than 1E, even if it is significantly nerfed.

I'm not going to force you to prepare the spell though. We need to work through Jackie's and Aksolan's interventions first before we get to any potential conflict (unless you want to initiate it). I'm a bit pressed for time today, but I'll update the game as soon as I get the chance.
Nov 25, 2024 3:34 pm
Ellagel strained to keep herself from initiating violence.
OOC:
Sounds fair to me. I'll keep charm person because I did not envision this as a combat encounter, and I still think that is our best chance. Even if we dispatch these fellows, there's a whole gang of them and we might prefer not to start a war with them immediately.

Could you describe the makeup of the halfling party a bit more? Anyone look like a book-keeper for the gang? Or is it more like a sergeant and five grunts? Trying to figure out who to target the spell at.

It's very much a sergeant and five grunts. The sergeant has an air of quiet confidence and competence about him.

Jacky puts on his most aggrieved tone of voice. "Dalton didn't say anything about a license. The boss never bothers to tell us anything."

He raises an eyebrow at the grizzled halfling. "You've met him, haven't you? Guy who looks at you like you're something stuck to the bottom of his boot?"

"Listen, we're just the help. He hasn't paid us yet. If it's gold you want, you need to talk to the boss."
This is rather ingenious and might just work. There’s sufficient detail that it could be plausible - there IS a certain amount of turnover in adventuring parties, and Dalton IS a well-known arse.

I’ll resolve using a reaction roll. Jackie’s Charisma of 12 doesn’t confer any bonus. You want the roll to be high.

Halfling reaction roll - (1d100)

(72) = 72

Somewhat to your surprise, the halfling accepts Jackie’s explanation.

"Oh, so you’re Darlings then? Say, no more and be on your way. Just remember to check in and declare any loot on the way out."

He also tips an imaginary hat to Aksolan at the two gold palmed to him by the Khumus (remember to knock those off your character sheet).

"Better change those torches," the leader says to one of his men, gesturing around the room, before heading back east towards the iron gate.

Old Zach, eh? I guess that's the way it is when you have your entire twenties stolen from you by a specter, goes through Zacharias's mind, morosely.

Indeed, Throckmorton, good buddy, I look forward to cleaving limbs and splitting heads at your side, at the appropriate time, of course!

With the potential fracas with the halflings disabused through Jacky's quick thinking and quicker fingers, Zacharias looks around the room for more of those Mithric characters. He is far from comfortable with the language.
Nov 27, 2024 10:52 am
Jacky shrugs, not bothering the other group's halflings as they go about their business replenishing torches. "Shall we?" he asks Ellagel, indicating the archway headed south that she'd peered through earlier. "Let's get a move on before the boss starts wondering where we are."
Nov 27, 2024 12:54 pm
"That was most elegantly done, Master Thistletop," Ella stated sotto voce, as the tension she had been holding back released slowly.

She was ready to explore the southern passage, if the rest of the party was prepared. The arrival of the rugged-looking archer she met with satisfaction. Their party needed all the help it could get.

i have come far to join you. My thanks.
Nov 28, 2024 4:28 pm
Leaving Plumthorn’s gang behind, you depart the statue room through the archway in the centre of the southern wall. The ensuing corridor is of classical Archontean construction - decorated, plaster-coated stone walls. Although the plaster is more complete here than on the stairway down, it still only provides partial coverage due to its general decrepitude.

After 40’ the corridor forks, with one leg heading in a south-easterly direction and the other south-west. At the point at which it forks, the southern wall contains an enormous 6’ x 4’ fresco of a baboon, squatting on the ground with bared teeth.

The forked corridors are both dimly lit at their far ends, allowing you to estimate that each is around 50’ long.

Thrudmarr glances at the fresco, then looks at Akoslan with a puzzled look. "Father was monkey?" He studies the newcomer more closely, trying to spot any baboon-like features. "Must be very strong! Thrudmarr fight with axe, but wrestling good too!"

Given that the group was taking a breather, Zach methodically scans the fresco, in goring the gaping simian in favor of words and smaller images.
Nov 29, 2024 10:54 pm
Jacky will search the fresco and the floor immediately in front of it, taking his time to feel for anything out of place.
Nov 30, 2024 7:12 am
Since the party is taking a moment to examine the fresco, Ella will exit the torchlight on the left-hand tunnel, wait for her elven eyes adapt to the darkness and see if she can see further down that passage. Assuming she sees nothing of note, she will return to the intersection, report, and repeat the operation on the right-hand tunnel.
Nov 30, 2024 2:08 pm
The baboon fresco is worn, but the image is clearly recognisable. There doesn’t appear to be any form of script on the wall, so Zach’s search for Mithric is fruitless. However, between them, Grim (with his inherent dwarven understanding of stone construction) and Jacky (through his careful searching) notice that the baboon’s eyes both seem to be cleverly designed push-buttons of some sort.

Meanwhile, Ella advances 30’ down the left-hand (south-easterly) corridor to escape the light from Thrud’s lantern and allow her infravision to kick in. She can see that there is a side passage heading west 20’ ahead of her, and a further side passage heading east a further 10’ beyond that. The main passage continues southeast into darkness.

She repeats the process with the right-hand (south-westerly) corridor. At the end of the 50’ passage, there is an east-west T-intersection. At the far side of that junction (i.e. in the southern wall of the east-west corridor) there is a door. However, just as Ella turns to head back towards the party, she hears the sound of multiple approaching footsteps coming from the west. The steps have a rattling, almost mechanical quality to them.

He hefts his lantern, clearly torn. He takes a hesitant step toward Grim and Akoslan, then stops. "Thrudmarr no want give Grim away with lantern. Will stay here, be ready if he needs me."
OOC:
I'm assuming Grim is just going to the fork and not any further. I don't want to bring the lantern forward and give him away, and I also don't want to be too far away should he get himself into trouble :). So I'm staying put unless I hear sounds of distress. The lantern gives off light in a 30 foot radius so whatever is in the west corridor shouldn't notice it until they get to the fork I'm guessing.

Softly emitting a "tsk" sound in obvious annoyance, the elf followed behind the dwarf trusting they would soon be in sufficient darkness for their vision to adapt.

Whispering to the dwarf, she stated "I’ll put a shaft in whatever rushes our way, Grimidek Granite, but I won’t be taking a stand here. We should all move as one."

I've assumed Grim has advanced just far enough down the southwestern fork to be beyond the range of Thrud's lantern so he can use his infravision. So Ella and Aksolan are within the lantern's range.

Regarding infravision, I'm going to say that you can make out most shapes, but you can't discern colours or fine details. So, yes, you would "see" undead with infravision.

Check surprise for skeletons - (1d6)

Wow! That's lucky. The skeletons are surprised for 2 segments. Actions that would normally happen over the course of a round may be completed in 1 surprise segment: talking, attacking, charging, closing to melee, etc. Therefore, you may do each of these things TWICE. Refer to OSRIC pages 125-128 if you need a refresher on combat and combat options.
Dec 4, 2024 4:53 pm
Zach gnashes his teeth. First, he and Thrudmarr—clearly the primary dealers of mayhem and malice of the party—are stuck behind the "squishies". Secondly, Zach knows that slashing weapons, such as his beloved bastard sword, are less effective against creatures who have no flesh to cleave; no sinew to carve; no muscle to flay. Although he did have a shield…

Looking over his companions, Zach prepares to charge in order to protect those unfortunate party members in the first rank.
OOC:
@Burbage, would using the shield as a weapon to bash be possible? If I wanted to mathematically minmax, using the bastard sword would net me between 2 and 9 points with an expected value of 6 (given the 50% reduction). Zach is a fighter and should be aware of basic tactics.

In OSRIC, skeletons take no more than 1 or 2 damage per arrow due to their lack of flesh.
OSRIC says:
No matter how a skeleton attacks, whether rusty blade, a stone, or its own former femur, it always deals 1d6 damage. Cold and spells that attack the mind have no affect on skeletons. They take less damage from edged and cutting weapons, typically reducing the damage by half. Most piercing weapons, like arrows and spears, do but 1 or 2 points maximum per attack. Holy water inflicts 2d4 hp per vial that strikes.

Yes, you can bash with your shield if you like, but I will say it's only going to do similar damage to what OSRIC classes an "unarmed" attack, i.e. 1d2 damage.

Yes, if you normally get 2 attacks per round, you may make 2 attacks in each surprise segment. Similarly, if a character has 3 attacks every 2 rounds (e.g. due to a weapon proficiency), they may attack 3 times across the 2 surprise segments. Cool, huh?

Ella forfeits a second round of shooting, given she can see the feeble effect of her shafts, and that Zacharias is now in melee with the foes. She steps back, bow in hand, and waits to see if Grim’s faith overpowers these creatures.
OOC:
I only have twenty arrows. Not going to spend them all on minimal damage.

Jacky gapes for a second at the sight of walking bones. He raises his bow, then points it back down without firing - arrows would just pass through the cracks, wouldn't they?

OOC:
Sorry ya'll, I picked a bad day to be sick and in bed yesterday!
"Walking bones!" Thrudmarr exclaims in shock. Seeing Zach charge forward, he will follow up right behind him, swinging his axe at whatever skeletons remain. "Chop! Chop! Chop!"
OOC:
Only one hit, for 10 damage. Sorry, I guess I didn't need to roll all 3 damages before finding out if they even hit lol.

So, let me try and stitch all this together …

Skirmishing With Skeletons - Surprise Segment 1
Grim brandishes his holy symbol and invokes the divine might of Lucreon. That is enough to turn the skeletons (they will all flee at the next opportunity they get to move).

Ella lets loose two arrows, but only one finds its mark. The sharp projectile only manages to chip a bone of one of the lead skeletons (2 damage).

Zach and Thrud charge along the corridor towards the skeletons, barrelling past Grim and Ella as they do so. Zach hits one skeleton twice with his bastard sword for a total of 6 damage, severely damaging but not dropping it. Thrud knocks the skull clean off another skeleton with his battle axe; the undead falls, useless, to the ground.

@Akoslan - I’m going to be strict here. The inventory of your character sheet is still empty, and I apply a simple rule: if an item of equipment is not on your character sheet, then you don’t have it. Therefore, currently, you have neither a bow nor any arrows and so are unable to attack. If you need any assistance with completing your character sheet, let’s pick that up in the Character Creation thread. But please prioritise this before any further in-game posts.

Skirmishing With Skeletons - Surprise Segment 2
Zach and Thrud continue their onslaught. Zach finally despatches the skeleton before him, whilst Thrud’s axe misses one of the two remaining skeletons.

Grim, Ella, Jacky and Akoslan (when his character sheet is complete) - are you going to take any actions in this second surprise segment? Note that you would now be firing into melee with a risk of hitting Zach and Thrud.

Ella is not going to fire into melee. She will take her second surprise segment to step back 10 or so feet and keep an eye out for any trouble from the skeletons or elsewhere.

Grim takes a step farther forth. Keeping his amulet brandished in calloused stubby fingers!
Keep behind n’ wid meh, people! We can keep dese skeletons fallin’ back as far as we wanna go!

Three things:
1. The screenshot of the miniatures is too awesome for words.

Don’t worry, I did halve the damage. It’s just that the skeleton Thrud was facing happened to have fewer hit points than the one Zach was tackling.
It’s clear you’re going to win the combat. The only question remaining is whether you can destroy all the skeletons before they escape and potentially cause trouble for you further down the line.

Skirmishing with Skeletons - Round 1
Zach fells the skeleton in front of him.

Whilst it’s another mighty blow from Thrud, it’s not quite enough to down the remaining skeleton. It runs away west, back in the direction it came from.
WhiteDwarf says:
As skeletons flee away, Grim takes hand off his holy symbol, and brandishes his warhammer. And takes a swing at the nearest remaining skeleton!
Grim won’t be able to do this. Because the initiative scores were tied, Grim would start to move towards the last skeleton at the same time that it turns and flees from Thrud and Zach. So by the time Grim arrived, it would be long gone. It moves twice as quickly as Grim, so there’s no hope of him catching it on foot.

The remaining skeleton moves more quickly than all of you and will get away unless you have a cunning plan to stop it.

If it seems plausible that you could recover the arrows (which in the currently constrained area it is), that’s fine. I’ll say there’s a 1-in-6 chance that a given arrow is either broken or lost - I’ll let you roll. Otherwise, you can collect them. Does that seem fair?
WhiteDwarf says:
Grim stows his hammer and checks the nearest wall for interesting stone markings or secret doors.
Grim spends a turn examining the section of wall he is standing next to. It is of classical Archontean construction consisting of stone walls covered in decorated plaster. In this area, the plaster is relatively intact and shows an image of a large ibis flanked by smaller baboons wielding clubs.
Scanning east and west along the corridor the skeletons arrived by …

30’ to the east there is a 20’ wide opening in the southern wall. Light spills through this opening as do tendrils of a grey-green mist.

To the west, the corridor continues beyond the range of Thrud’s lantern. However, there is a door after 30’ in the northern wall.

There is also the door that you are already aware of that is 5’ west of the corridor in which you fought the skeletons (i.e. it spans a line of the graph paper, rather than being in the middle of a square).

Zach is more than happy to let others make the decisions for now. He wants to smash things and let loose his rage at the universe for stealing a decade of his life. Sticking by Thrudmarr seems to be a good decision…for now.
Dec 9, 2024 7:43 pm
That smells like dark magic’, the elf thought to herself, as she observed the strands of fog coming from the southern opening on the eastern branch. That wasn’t where the skeletons had come from, however, as they had been marching from the west.

Turning to the others, she stated "Im taking a peep at that entrance". She then immediately walked along the southern wall, as silently as her light elven frame allowed. Once she was by the opening, she first observed the tendrils of mist. If they were not particularly threatening, she will peek around the edge of the wall into the illuminated chamber.
OOC:
That seems eminently reasonable to me, Burbage. Rolling to see if either arrow was broken.

Dec 10, 2024 2:54 pm
Zach walks alongside Thrudmarr, anticipating more mayhem.
Dec 10, 2024 4:42 pm
Peering through the opening in the southern wall of the corridor, Ella sees a diamond-shaped chamber in which a grey-green mist rises 3’ above the floor throughout. Visible through the mist, in the centre of the chamber, is a 20’-diameter pool rimmed with a 1’-tall, blue-granite lip. The liquid in the pool is a dark, sludgy brown colour. The room is lit by what appears to be a continual light spell cast in the centre of the ceiling.

Mapping information: Diamond-shaped room, in which the only visible entrance is in the northern wall. The west, east and south corners are all sharp points. The distance from the western corner to the eastern corner is 60’. The distance from the northern entrance, to the southern corner is 50’.

A 3 INT? Aren’t you then both illiterate and not capable of speech?
Dec 12, 2024 7:12 pm
OOC:
Illiterate? Absolutely (although Burgbage genrously allowed me to be able to write "THЯUD"). Incapable of speech? Debatable I think. OSRIC doesn't have anything to say about low INT, but AD&D 2e says this:

"A semi-intelligent character (Int 3 or 4) can speak (with difficulty) and is apt to react instinctively and impulsively. They are not hopeless as a player character (PC), but playing such a character correctly is not easy."

I too often forget just how low I rolled and have certainly been playing him too smart to reflect a 3 though. Being completely non-verbal felt too boring. I considered playing more impulsively and just touching and pressing every button he comes across but I don't want to blow up the rest of the party. :)

When Ella and Grim push both eyes simultaneously, the wall grinds inwards to reveal a flight of stairs descending into darkness.

@dracul104 - please don’t feel you have to let Thrud’s low intelligence hinder your contribution to the game. It’s absolutely fine to offer suggestions as a player, out-of-character, if you don’t feel it is something Thrud himself would come up with.

"Close the door behind you and wait. We’ll try to circle back and open the door from this side" the elf said, just before hurrying after Thrudmarr and Jacky.
OOC:
I would have gone either way, though wand-wielding giant arachnids feels above Ella’s pay-grade. But if we are to split, she’ll follow her earlier intention. Perhaps the slime will not follow us, and if the secret door is closed, it might not follow you.
Dec 19, 2024 4:19 pm
So, can I just double-check that I've understood everyone's intentions correctly ...

Jacky, Thrud (with the lantern) and Ella are going to head halfway down the southwesterly corridor and pause to see what is making the approaching noise.

Zach and Grim will go through the secret door and, if they follow Ella's instructions, will close it behind them. They currently have no lit source of light, although Grim has his infravision.

Is this correct?

Dec 20, 2024 10:24 am
Zach and Grim hurry through the concealed door. There’s an obvious switch on the other side that closes it, plunging the duo into total darkness. Zach can see nothing. Grim, through his infravision, can see a stairway that descends beyond his range of sight (60’).

Meanwhile, the others assemble midway down the south-westerly corridor and turn to see what is approaching. As it comes into view, your first impression is that your vision has become blurred. But you quickly realise that the source of the noise is a large, almost transparent, jelly-like mass that is sweeping along the corridor. It has no discernible features and fills the full width of the passage. Within its body, you can see various items of debris accumulated during its travels - stones, pieces of plaster, discarded flasks, etc.

As it approaches the junction in front of the baboon fresco, which way will it go?! The path of least deviation is away from you, north, towards the large room with the statue. I’ll give that a 1-4 on d6 chance. On 5-6, it turns towards Ella, Jackie and Thrud. At least Zach and Grim close the concealed door so that it can’t pursue them down the stairs!

Uh-oh! Ella, Jacky and Thrud have a gelatinous cube that is about 30’ away from them and heading in their direction at 60'/round. We will move to combat rounds to resolve the next steps.

Please can Ella, Jacky and Thrud declare their general actions and any spells for the first round. Once we’ve established those, we’ll roll for initiative.

At this point, Grim and Zach are unaware of what is going on.

How far can we move and still attack in Osric? ADnD was quite limiting in the matter, and pages 120-122 of Osric don’t provide much guidance. If Ellagel could fall back half her movement and still get a shot out, she might try that; all depends on the map, really. Can the gelatinous cube use all its movement and still attack during its round?
Dec 20, 2024 9:15 pm
OOC:
Agree with testlum's assessment. We should have the movement to be able to kite it all the way around, and then sneak back through the hidden passage to join the others if we so desire...assuming we win initiative.

Can the Fighting Withdrawal move be made at full speed? I don't see the book mention say one way or the other. If so, that's what Thrud shall do, keeping between the cube and the slower Jacky as they fall back.
Dec 20, 2024 10:15 pm
With a quick look at the elf and human, Jacky sees that he's not alone in his idea of flight. "Let's get out of here," the halfling calls to them before darting down the corridor and away from the strange cube.
OOC:
By fleeing, Jacky can move at 120'. I don't think checking our surroundings is a big deal since we're going through an already explored corridor!
Dec 21, 2024 7:52 am
OSRIC is vague about non-melee combat movement. It seems reasonable to allow Ella to shoot and move at least a short distance. Therefore, I will say that she can, but you must declare before initiative is rolled how many segments she wants to spend moving. Each segment allows her to move 1/10th of her full movement rate, but delays the shot by that number of segments. Seem fair? There is a risk that she won’t get the shot away at all if you plan to move too far and the initiative roll goes against you.

How this encounter plays out will be very much dependent on who wins initiative. If the gelatinous cube wins, it will "Close into Combat", therefore engaging you all in melee. That’s going to limit your options. It won’t be able to attack you this round, but you won’t be able to attack it either.

Therefore, focus your declarations on what you will do if you WIN initiative …

- Jacky - if you’re planning to run away unilaterally, remember that Thrud has the only light source!

- Ella - if you plan to move and then shoot, let me know how many segments of movement you plan to take.

- Thrud - a "Fighting Retreat" is an in-melee manoeuvre. What will you do if you win initiative?
Dec 21, 2024 7:55 am
OOC:
That's fine, Jacky has infravision, but I'll swap his action to a fighting retreat if the cube gets into melee!
Dec 21, 2024 1:56 pm
Ellagel turned around and rushed towards the southern intersection at full speed, without a word. At that point, she briefly checkes if there were no further nasty surprises in the eastern passage. If she sees no one in that passage, she will move the relai der of her movement in that direction.
OOC:
Even assuming we win initiative, Ella would have to at least move some 30-40ft before shooting from a  safe distance, which turns out to be 4-5 segments... too risky. She’ll be rushing away. [cue ‘Brave Sir Robin’, please…]

Tied initiative in OSRIC is resolved simultaneously. This means that JET start to move away from the ‘cube at the same moment that it starts to approach them. As you are running, you’ll easily outpace it and escape.

As the gelatinous cube rounds the corner by the baboon fresco, Jackie, Ella and Thrud turn and flee. Doubling back east, past the misty chamber with the murky pool, they halt to gather their breath halfway up the south-easterly fork. There are no signs that the ‘cube has followed you.
Meanwhile, Zach and Grim start to descend the stairs behind the concealed door. Apart from the occasional switchback, the steps head inexorably downwards through the darkness. After ten minutes, there’s no sign of them stopping. Are you going to continue?

Our dwarven fellow acquiesces and descends the stairs. Waddling in marching order with his friends.
Dec 27, 2024 7:22 pm
It’s another long descent. Not quite as long as the original trip down from the pyramid, but easily another 200-300’. By the time you reach the bottom of the stairs, Grim estimates that you’re 500-600’ below the ruined city on the surface. To put that into context, that’s over a third of the height of the cliff face.

It’s therefore something of an anti-climax when the stairs terminate abruptly at a solid stone wall.

Mapping information: the final section of stairs runs in a north -> south direction. So the solid wall is to your south, and the way back up is to the north. The stairs are 10’ wide. On my map, they straddle a vertical grid line (i.e. 5’ either side), so I recommend you reproduce that to make it easier for both of us.

Dec 28, 2024 12:08 pm
Jackie’s instincts are correct. Ella spots a suspicious-looking crevice in the face of the wall. By jamming her hand into it and pulling, with a bit of effort she’s able to swing the wall open via a hinge mechanism on the left-hand side of the secret door.

Stepping through, you find yourself in a natural cavern. It’s utterly dark and the atmosphere is oppressively damp and humid. The sense of tomb-like stillness is broken only by the sound of running water and the occasional chirrups of cave crickets. From the echoes created by those noises, you get the sense that the chamber is vast.

From the light cast by your lantern, you can see that the floor of the cave is littered with stalagmites. Approximately 10’ ahead of you can see the shore of a dark pool. To your left (east) the cave wall extends for about 10’ before turning to the northeast. To your right, the cave wall heads roughly southwest beyond the range of your lantern’s light. However, in that wall, about 20’ away from you, you can see a ledge that is 20’ above the floor. The roof of the cavern is lost in darkness.

Thrud’s lantern would have run out of oil whilst you were searching for the secret door. Please can someone cross off another flask of oil from their inventory, or else pull out a torch.

The pool extends to the southwest and northeast as far as you can see. You can, however, just about make out the far shore directly across from you. You can also see a definite current - the water’s flowing towards the northeast.

Assuming there’s anything in the pool, I’ll say Jacky has a 1-in-6 chance each turn of catching something. For how long does he intend to fish?

You are, of course, free to make camp, but there’s no mechanical need to do so. It’s early afternoon and although I’ve not been narrating your hourly rests (they’re not very interesting!), I have been accounting for them in my timings. Also, bear in mind that time = wandering monster checks.

Dec 30, 2024 12:05 pm
Ella and Grim investigate the area of the cave wall beneath the ledge. A few things are apparent:

1. The ledge, 20’ above you, is carved into the rock and appears to be the start of a 20’-wide passage running northwest. Jacky could attempt to climb to reach it unaided. The rest of you would need some sort of assistance - ropes and/or pitons for example.

2. Up close to this section of the wall, you both get a strong sense of magical dread (even Grim who, as a dwarf, would normally be the last to notice such things). It appears to be radiating from the passage above you.

3. You can hear the occasional high-pitched call of some sort of creature coming from above.

4. Grim finds no secret doors in the cave wall below the ledge.

Jacky reels in his empty hook, glancing at the pale reflection in the water with some regret. "Ah well, maybe I need better bait. One of those crickets ought to do the trick if I could get my hands on it."

Hands on his hips, the halfling takes in the whole of the pool for a moment. With that rushing noise, it probably leads to the waterfall they saw a day ago. "Find anything interesting, lads and lassie?"

DM, would Zach be able to tell if the flowing water current leads roughly in the direction of the river outside at the base of the cliff by looking at Jacky’s map? If so, Zach will suggest to follow the current UPSTREAM to its source, which should be more interesting.
Dec 30, 2024 6:19 pm
The river at the base of the cliff is fed by the main waterfall, which in turn is fed by the river on the city plateau. There's nothing to suggest any direct connection with this body of water.
Dec 30, 2024 10:34 pm
Thrudmarr, who had been staring intently into the water at the pale fish, jerks his head up at the mention of undead and ghosts.

"No more ghost! Last one make Zach old man! Find treasure other place."
OOC:
I agree exploring along the wall sounds like the best route right now.
Dec 31, 2024 9:17 am
Keeping the cave wall on your right-hand side you continue to explore southwest. The wall continues in that direction for 30’ beyond the ledge, before turning due west. The river remains parallel to the wall … there’s roughly a 10’ gap between the wall and the shoreline that you’re able to traverse, your passage only interrupted by the occasional stalagmite. In addition to the sounds of the cave-crickets and the running water, you also hear the fluttering of bats.

At the point where the wall changes direction, your lantern reveals an island in the middle of the river, 10’ to the southeast. You initially thought it was the far shore, but you realise that the river must have widened considerably at this point and that you’re actually looking at a solitary rocky outcrop surrounded by water. As you continue to survey the island, you notice a large dark shape moving upon it. It appears humanoid, but is noticeably taller than you - perhaps as tall as 10’.

Well, so much for seeing the sun again. Theobald, dear fellow, you think we can take yonder giant? Zach says as he gestures to the ominous figure.
Dec 31, 2024 10:47 am
"Big! But not so big as the stone statues outside the cliffside, eh?" Jacky watches the figure for a moment. It's moving - doing what?
Jan 1, 2025 8:54 am
As you continue to watch the large figure on the island, you see them climb into a boat. The vessel sinks noticeably in the water as they settle down and pick up a paddle. They push off from the island’s rocky shore and begin to head in your direction.

It’s just one figure we see, right? DM post states ‘them’ and ‘they’.
Grim watches warily. Let’s stay out of its sight, and see where the figure goes. Then we can either try ambushing it ashore, or perhaps even steal its boat.

Discerning firstly, if it even means to cause harm, of course.

Jacky moves in front of the elf when he sees her draw an arrow. "If you want to do that, do it out of sight!" he turns and whispers to her. "Whoever that is, they might be not be friendly, but an arrow pointed at their face certainly will guarantee it!"

Josephat is right, Lady Ermentrout, don't antagonize before they even come into view. Of course, that didn't stop Zacharias from taking a firmer grip on his shield and letting his hand rest near the pommel of his bastard sword, as the creature approached.
Jan 2, 2025 5:26 pm
The creature paddling towards you in a simple dugout canoe is a large humanoid with rust-coloured skin. It’s bald, thick-limbed and impressively muscled. A silver cloak draped around its shoulders is in marked contrast to its otherwise simple clothing.

It has clearly seen you and has set its course directly towards you.

None that you can see. There may be some hidden from view on the floor of the canoe, but both the creature’s hands are occupied with his paddle.
In response to Jacky’s greeting, it waves its paddle in a non-threatening manner. As it approaches the shore, it jumps out of the canoe into the shallows before pulling the craft out of the water.

Standing to its full height, you see that it is easily 9’ tall. Even Thrud seems diminutive in comparison. Using broken, halting language it addresses you in a deep, booming voice: "Gog. Visitors! Food?"

Zach gazes up at the imposing figure? So your name is Grog? Nice to meet you, I am Zach, using the short form of his name, given the creatures predilection to monosyllabicy. Zach clears his throat, trying to draw the creature’s attention to him. Well, Mister Fog, I’m sorry, but none of my companions—half-size or full size—is available for trade or meal services. Anything else we can trade or share? If not, we bid you to fare well. Zach gazes calmly at the nine-foot tall mountain of pale muscle, although his hands are feeling somewhat clammy. First ten years, now a cannibalism giant, I should have stayed home!

Ella's appreciation for the small giant increased the more it spoke. It seemed to know its place in the complex net of predatory relationships that characterized this underground metropolis. And so the elf considered the advice to be quite good, even if it meant that her party had just lost a considerable amount of time coming down here for no apparent benefit. 'We've obtained some information', she thought, 'it's not nothing'.

Looking to her companions, she attempted to gauge their attitudes. Were they insulted by Gog's advice, or were they inclined to take it?

"Bringing Gog some beast man flesh to dine on might be a good thing to do... he might tell us more with his sizeable belly full."

Jan 11, 2025 1:26 pm
Eastward indeed, yes!
Jan 11, 2025 1:36 pm
Ella simply nods. She didn’t specially want to wherever those skeletons had come from.
Jan 12, 2025 12:01 am
Zacharias sighed heavily as he retraced his steps for a second time. I joined this party for treasure, not for aging and calisthenics, he thought wearily. As the party breached the baboon, he leaned on his sword while the party decided where to go. From his perspective, he didn't care. Then he said, I'll go where Thrustmore goes, we can watch each others backs as we get overrun by monsters, but let's go somewhere new for a change. I'm tired of retracing my steps.
Jan 12, 2025 9:02 pm
Exiting the baboon fresco, you turn right and head southeast. You continue past the corridor on your right that leads back towards the room with the murky pool and after 10’ you arrive at another junction (already shown on Jacky’s map).

To the east, a corridor continues for 5’ before reaching a flight of stairs that descend 10' to a closed door.

To the southeast, the corridor continues for about another 30’ before opening into a larger chamber. From where you are at the junction, it’s too dark to discern much detail about the room’s contents, although you can see that a layer of grey-green mist rises 3’ from the floor (similar to the room with the sludgy pool).

Ellagel, seeing that Jacky was about to busy himself with the door, walked down the southwest tunnel by herself. She did so as silently as she could, trying to have a better view of what lay in the chamber with the green mist, without entering it.
OOC:
Ellagel is only a 4 inches above 4 feet, so she does not want to enter the mist (which is about chest height for her), but just wants to have an idea of the layout of the chamber, and discern whatever is apparent about the source of the mist, and of the chamber's ceiling. She'll have a look and fall back as swiftly as possible once she's gleaned some information.
Jan 15, 2025 4:37 pm
Jacky descends the short flight of stairs to the east and inspects the door. It is of simple wooden construction and there’s no apparent lock. He spends a turn carefully checking for traps but doesn’t find any.

Meanwhile, Ella and Thrud continue south-east to inspect the misty room. Through the haze, it’s difficult to gauge the full extent of the chamber as it extends beyond the range of Thrud’s lantern. However, north-to-south, it extends 30’. More or less opposite the entrance where Thrud and Ella are standing are three stone benches (also running in a north-south direction). They appear to be facing a sunken area towards the west of the chamber, although you can only make out a small portion of that on the edge of the lantern’s light. Empty torch sconces line the wall and the usual mixture of trash litters the floor.

"Sitting place? What that over there?"

Thrudmarr will cautiously enter the room enough to cast a little more light into the western side of the room.
Jan 16, 2025 12:21 am
Grim waddles cautiously into the room. His dwarven vision untrammeled by darkness.
Well now, let’s see what we ‘ave in ‘ere…
Jan 16, 2025 4:41 pm
Thrud’s lantern messes with Grim’s infravision, but by entering the room they are able to gauge its full extent and contents.

The chamber is shaped, somewhat unusually, as a parallelogram. The north and south walls run in an east -> west direction, but the two others run southwest -> northeast.

In the western half of the chamber, just visible through the grey-green mist, is a sunken area that sits 3’ below the level of the floor. Five steps lead into this sunken area, the centrepiece of which is a single onyx pillar that rises 15’. High up on the western wall is an inscription in Mithric that Grim reads as:

Thou May Ask of Thoth What Thou Will, Provided Thou Accept His Judgement.

Mapping information: the room is parallelogram-shaped. The north wall and south wall run in an east -> west direction and are 60’ long and 30' apart. To the east of the chamber’s entrance, the north wall extends 20’, and to the west 30’. The east and west walls both run in a southwest -> northeast direction (i.e. at 45 degrees). The sunken area is similarly shaped as a smaller parallelogram. There are no other visible exists.

WhiteDwarf, I am making the assumption that you are helping Zach with his learning Mithric. If you would rather RP it out, I'll gladly strike and repost.
Zacharias followed Grimidek into the room. Eying the Mithric characters, he asked Grimidek Master Gemstone, can you help me understand those words? After a bit of patient tutelage, Zach also comprehends the meaning: Thou May Ask of Thoth What Thou Will, Provided Thou Accept His Judgement.
Oh boy. Not another one of these, Master Giraffenose. What will the judgement be, another ten years of my life??

Jacky rolls his eyes. "Shall we spend the whole day walking in circles?"

The halfling steps forward, hands on hips, and glances up at the pillar. "I hope Thoth understands Archontean as well as your language, mister Grimidek, else I'll need a translator to help!" He clears his throat. "Where is the closest treasure, O great Thoth?"

Jacky wades through the mist, which pretty much envelopes him, and descends the steps into the sunken area at the western side of the room (by which time he is fully submerged in the mist). Standing in front of the tall onyx pillar he asks his question. There is no response.

Probably lost all magic or connection to the divine centuries ago, mused Zach. In that case, I might as well try too. Zach sheathed his bastard sword and slung his shield on his back, so as to provide a more supplicative stance. Following Jacky down the steps, Zach composed his request in his broken Mithric, reasoning that the request should be in the language of the notice:

Mighty Thoth, this one humbly requests to know if there is an achievable way for his youth to be restored unto him.

Zach joins Jackie in front of the onyx pillar and asks his question. Again, there is no response.

Note: As I understand it, Zach has been "learning" Mithric for a little over a day. There is no way he could ask a question in the way that you phrased it. Moving forward, if Zach wishes to attempt to read or write Mithric, it will require a roll for it to be intelligible. For now, we’ll assume Zach asked the question in Archontean.

Thrudmarr watches his companions with growing confusion as they walk into the mist and talk to the black stone. His brow furrows as he tries to understand what game they're playing. He shifts the lantern from hand to hand nervously, occasionally glancing at the strange writing that everyone keeps looking at.

"Umm, why friends talk to rock?" He shakes his head sadly. "Friends go crazy. Rock no talk!"

You backtrack to the simple wooden door at the bottom of the short flight of steps. It opens to a small rectangular room, the floor of which is covered with a thick layer of trash - bits of leather, ruined clothing, scraps of metal, and a foul-smelling bolus of decaying animal matter.

Mapping information: rectangular room, 25’ (east-west) x 15’ (north-south). You enter through a door in the northern-most section of the western wall. There are no other visible exits.

Thrudmarr wrinkles his nose at the foul smell and holds the lantern out to illuminate the trash-filled room. "Smell bad! Something dead?" He points at the rotting mass in the corner with disgust.

Ella does find something! In the easternmost section of the southern wall, she discovers a poorly concealed 4’ square panel that slides to reveal a narrow (5’ wide) passage leading south. With her infravision, she can see that it continues for 30’ before arriving at a flight of ascending rough-hewn steps. Ella nods in satisfaction at this discovery.

"Master Grimidek, Zacharias Polipulis, do you want to go in first? Dwarven eyes to avoid faulty stonework, and strong sinews to push back against any foes?"

The elf continued to study the passage while adding, "Must be something worth hiding behind a trash pit!"

The passage is narrow, but is it only 4’ high, or is it the passage ‘standard height’ i.e. 8-10’ ?

Thrudmarr wipes his axe blade on some nearby scraps of leather with obvious disgust after poking the smelly pile. His head perks up at Ella's discovery and he holds the lantern higher, trying to illuminate the passage she found.

"Ella lady find secret way!" He holds his lantern up and peers into the darkness beyond the doorway and looks back at the others, clearly eager to be away from the smelly room. "We go? Thrudmarr be right behind Grim and Zach, hold light."

One hand covering his nose, Jacky motions for the strapping warrior to lead them on. The sooner away from the stink the better!
Jan 25, 2025 1:59 pm
You step through the low concealed opening and into the passage beyond. The walls of the passage are of plain rock, with none of the finesse or finishing you’ve seen elsewhere on this level. The passage is also narrow, forcing you to travel in single file, although it’s sufficiently high that you can all walk without stooping.

The passage continues due south for 30’ before a flight of rough-hewn stone steps lead upwards, also due south, for 20’. They terminate at a dead end.

Jacky hunts about for another secret door. It worked the last time, after all.
Jan 25, 2025 6:28 pm
Ellagel too, moves forward to examine the end of the passage, and the walls to either side, taking her time to search any hollow wall of that fails, she will examine the ceiling and floor, hoping to find a trapdoor.
Jan 26, 2025 9:10 am
It takes a turn, but both Jacky and Ella locate a secret door leading south in the wall at the top of the steps. It opens to reveal a large chamber of classic Archontean construction. Without actually entering the room, this is what you can see with the aid of the light from Thrud’s lantern …

You are standing in an opening in the chamber’s northern wall. Immediately to your left (east), the northern wall extends beyond the range of your light. To your right (west) the northern wall continues for 15’, before reaching the western wall. About 20’ south of the chamber’s northwest corner, in the western wall, you can see an iron-bound wooden door. The room has a high ceiling that extends 20’ above you.

In front of you, to the south, as far as the light from your lantern allows, you can see numerous floor-to-ceiling columns that gleam with hints of yellow gold. The columns are regularly spaced at 10’ intervals. Between the columns, several bodies litter the floor - you count at least three within the range of your lantern.

I assume since it's not mentioned, these bodies aren't stinking up the place like the earlier mass?
Holding up a hand to delay his armored companions, Jacky creeps forward - only as far into the room as he needs to see what injuries the bodies bear, if any.
Jan 26, 2025 4:14 pm
Ellagel would have wanted to stop Jacky from stepping within. She had hoped to hood the lantern and attempt to see in the dark, using her superior elven senses. But it was too late for that, at the moment. She prepared to shoot at anything moving towards Jacky.

Jan 27, 2025 7:29 pm
Grim steps forward carefully. Stooping low and helping check for natural hazards and interesting stonework.
Jan 28, 2025 4:29 pm
Jacky creeps into the room to inspect the three bodies that are illuminated by Thrud’s lantern. Grim follows cautiously after.

From the robes she is wearing, one of the bodies appears to be of a human magic user. Another body is a halfling. The third is more unusual - a creature with an apparently normal human body (torso, arms, hands, legs, feet) but with the head of a pig. Somewhat strangely, from a cursory glance, none of the bodies show any signs of physical damage.

Thrudmarr stands steady in the doorway, holding the lantern high to help light Jacky's way. His eyes strain to make out what his little friend is examining in the shadows between the columns
Jan 30, 2025 3:16 pm
As Jacky rises from inspecting the dead bodies, he senses a presence. It’s not in front of him, nor to his side, nor behind him. Rather it’s above him. Glancing rapidly upwards he sees a horror floating just over his head. It vaguely resembles a translucent floating octopus made of a thin gelatinous material. Four tentacles dangle from its cylindrical body, which features three ‘eyes’ surrounding a chitinous beak.

At the same moment, Grim notices a second such creature descending out of the darkness to hover above his head. Ella, Thrud and Zach, standing in the secret doorway, see four other such creatures heading in their direction.
The "Chasm Cephalopods" (for that is what they are) have used their surprise round to close into combat with Jacky and Grim, but they cannot attack this round. However, Jacky and Grim are both now considered to be in (separate) melee combat with the creatures.

The other party members are not yet in melee combat, but the remaining cephalopods are capable of reaching them in the coming round.

Before we roll initiative for Round 1, please can everyone declare any spells. Non-spell casters should declare their general actions for the round. It’s clear that the cephalopods intend to attack.

Over to you.

If anyone wants to change their original declarations, now that it’s clear what you’re up against, please feel free to do so.

OOC:
Just checking, we're still in round 1 yes? If so, Jacky will pull a fighting retreat as declared.
Feb 1, 2025 4:40 pm
Half-dead but undeterred, our dwarven fellow strikes back with his trusty hammer!
Yaarrrrrrr!
OOC:
That should hit Armor Class 18 pretty well lol.

War Hammer - (1d20, 1d6+1)

"Fall back!" the small elf roared as she let fly arrows to cover her companion’s retreat.
OOC:
No changes on Ella’s action. Does shooting at the creature attacking Grim and Jacky învolve a chance of hitting her allies? If so, she will shoot at the unengaged creatures.

Rolls

Longbow attack 1, damage - (1d20+2, 1d6)

1d20+2 : (18) + 2 = 20

1d6 : (6) = 6

Longbow attack 2, damage - (1d20+2, 1d6)

Cephalopod Skirmish - Round 1
Jacky successfully executes his fighting retreat. The cephalopod initially moves to follow the halfling, but halts its advance as Jacky retreats to the apparent safety of the doorway (Jacky is now out of melee).

Grim flails harmlessly with his less-than-trusty hammer.
matmaisan says:
OOC:

No. Because the cephalopod is floating above Grim, Ella can get a clear shot at no risk of hitting the dwarf.

One of Ella’s arrows rips straight through the cephalopod above Grim’s head, tearing its thin translucent body, but not bringing it down.

Awaiting confirmation of Thrud’s and Zach’s Round 1 actions.

Zach lets loose a vociferous, if inarticulate, war cry and lets loose a mighty slash with his bastard sword—one which would clearly overbalance an untrained fighter, but not Zacharias Polipulis. If there is one thing Zacharias knows, it is the use of the glorious gladius bastardus!
OOC:
In case I hit, I'll roll for M damage. If these are large, please let me know.

Rolls

Bastard Sword - To Hit - (1d20+3)

(7) + 3 = 10

Bastard Sword - Dmg vs. Small/Med - (2d4+3)

(24) + 3 = 9

Feb 3, 2025 1:54 pm
Thrudmarr hesitates for a moment upon hearing Ella's shouted directive to fall back. But as he watches the creatures strike repeatedly at Jacky and Grim, and Grim standing firm against them, his face contorts in rage and he rushes forward with a guttural roar.

"HRRRAAAAAGHH!!!!!!"

His boots pound against the stone floor as he barrels towards the creature hovering above Grim, axe held high.
OOC:
Question - I might have asked this before but can't recall, am I able to drop the lantern at the entrance without it going out and pull out my shield before charging out? I suspect drawing my shield constitutes a 'combat action' but I couldn't find it in the book.
OOC:
That hits a -7 AC. And max damage! Let's hope these things are fragile, otherwise we could be in trouble.

Battle Axe To Hit (Charge!) - (1d20+3)

Cephalopod Skirmish - Round 1
@Thrud - it’s OK to place the lantern on the floor and switch to your shield before charging - a combat round in OSRIC is a minute long, so I’m not going to get fussy about reasonable minor actions.

Without a thought for their own safety, Zach and Thrud charge to the aid of the beleaguered Grim. Zach’s attack is wild and misses its mark. But Thrud’s axe rips through the already perforated cephalopod above the dwarf and it falls harmlessly to the ground.

That concludes the round. As one of the cephalopods has been killed, I’ll make a morale check to see if they will continue to attack you.

Ella is encourages by the felling of the first floating monstrosity, and continues to launch arrows at the fleeing creatures.
OOC:
I forgot to add Ella’s specialization bonus the damage of her previous attack.

I believe those in melee get one attack when the enemy leaves, and their ordinar attack routine when it’s their round. So Thrud and Zach might get three attacks and grim 2…

Cephalopod Skirmish - Round 1
OK, let’s try to bring some order to the general chaos!

We are still in Round 1. As it’s clear that you plan to press the attack, let’s continue to work through things in the proper sequence. Here’s a view of the current situation (I’ve removed the already dead cephalopod that was above Grim) …

https://i.imgur.com/er6aKAD.jpeg

In OSRIC, combatants within 10’ of each other are considered to be within melee range. So, for their second attacks in Round 1, Thrud can reach the one in front of him (that attacked Jacky previously) and Zach can engage the closest one to him in the group of four.

Both of the follow-up attacks find their mark, tearing through the creatures’ thin, translucent bodies. But neither are killed outright and they continue to float, albeit somewhat erratically.

That concludes the round. Please can someone roll initiative for Round 2 and we’ll pick things up from there.

Rolls

Cephalopod initiative for Round 2 - (1d6)

(5) = 5

Cephalopod Skirmish - Round 2

OK, so you win initiative for Round 2. This means that those in melee range will be able to attack twice this round ... once on your initiative and a second bonus attack at +4 on the cephalopod's initiative.

Rerolling as prior rolls were out-of-sync.
Zacharias finally has something at which to express the fury, frustration, sadness, and despair which has been building since the specter attack. Giving an inarticulate scream of pure rage, Zach lets loose with his bastard sword, protecting himself with his large shield.

(16) + 3 = 19

Bastard Sword - Dmg vs. Small/Med - (2d4+3)

@Burbage Could I know your preference for resolving battles? Is it:

Players declare actions without rolling -> GM rolls initiative -> Players roll initiative and actions -> GM resolves?

If so, let me know if you'd rather I roll again for Jacky too.
Feb 5, 2025 6:48 pm
I just try to follow the combat sequence as outlined in the OSRIC rulebook.

So, for each round ...

1. Declare spells and general actions.
2. Both sides roll initiative.
3. Initiative winners act
4. Initiative losers act.
5. Second attacks as required.

So if you lose initiative, you should hold your actions until I have resolved your opponents' actions.

Best to roll again for Jacky to keep everything clear and together.

Cephalopod Skirmish - Round 2
Zach manages to land one more blow on the cephalopod closest to him. However, whilst it’s clearly badly injured, it doesn’t drop and is able to begin fleeing. It propels itself up and away into the darkness.

Grim’s trusty warhammer lets him down again. As does Thrud’s battle axe. However, between them, Ella and Jacky manage to kill a second cephalopod.

In total, four cephalopods are able to flee into the darkness, one of which is badly injured.

Do you intend to try and pursue? They generally headed away from you, at speed, upwards and eastwards, out of the range of your lantern’s light.

Feb 8, 2025 7:55 am
"We shouldn’t split up, or go far away from the tunnel. If someone carries the light, Jacky and I can probably shoot them down before they approach."

The elf looked about, heart beating hard from the dangerous encounter but smiling inside since fortune favored the party in the end.
OOC:
I’m okay with walking in and examining the bodies, but in an orderly fashion. If we start splitting up we’ll be picked off individually by these things or the next ugly monstrosity here.
Feb 8, 2025 2:31 pm
After pausing for a few minutes to catch your breath after the fight, you cautiously enter the columned hall to investigate it properly.

When you are able to gauge its full extent, you find a large rectangular chamber that runs for 80’ west->east and 40’ north->south. Twenty-one (7x3) golden pillars, spaced evenly at 10’ intervals, support the 20’ high ceiling. There are three other visible exits - a door in the middle of the western wall and two 10’ wide passages leading east - one that is 5’ from the northern wall and another that is 5’ from the southern wall.

In total, seven bodies litter the floor - two halflings, four humanoids with pig heads, and a human magic user.

There is no sign of the cephalopods.

Ella will immediately examine the body of the fallen spell-caster. There might be some spell components or books to be taken. She will first assess the degree of decomposition, and try to limit any contact with rotting flesh.
OOC:
Do we have any idea where the cephalopods flew to? Did we notice whether they took the southern or northern passage during their escape?
Feb 8, 2025 5:15 pm
Grim stoops low, examines the nearest body, looking for interesting items. Then says a prayer for safety of souls.
Feb 8, 2025 10:25 pm
Jacky, too, sends a prayer up to his deity, but not through words. His goddess wasn't named Lightfingers for nothing! He picks one of the two halflings to start with, riffling for any valuables in their pockets or boots.

If one of them had something with their name on it, he'd note it down and bring the news back home too.

Hall of Columns
You search the various bodies lying between the golden columns.

The halflings only have the leather armour they are wearing and a short sword each.

The humanoids with pig heads were each carrying a spear. One of them is wearing a steel helmet.

The most interesting items are on the magic user. You find two potions (they appear different, but there is nothing to indicate their effect), a coin pouch (containing 48 gold pieces and 34 silver) and a metal rod with a fish-shaped cross-section.
Ella says:

OOC:
Do we have any idea where the cephalopods flew to? Did we notice whether they took the southern or northern passage during their escape?
It looks like the bodies died relatively recently. None exhibit an advanced state of decomposition. The pig-men are the most decomposed, the magic user the least. This suggests that they were separate groups rather than a single party.

You know the four cephalopods floated away in an easterly direction, but there’s no indication as to which passage they exited by. They would have been in darkness at the point they left the chamber.
Avraham says:

"Here’s something to lay my debt," the elf stated with a smile as she tossed the coin pouch to Zach and the others. This would probably buy. Them lodging and meals for a short while.

"Now what do we have here…" she mused, producing the two vials. She held them carefully and took mental note of their appearance: color, viscosity, texture. These will require some testing," she added. Unmarked potions could as soon harm you as they could benefit you, she’d been told countless times by her elven tutors.

And then she pulled out the strange rod-like item with a fish cross-section. This one intrigued and excited the elf most profoundly. It could be something as mundane as a key or a lever. Or it could be a powerful eldritch artifact containing dormant magics only waiting for the needed string of words to activate. "Fascinating!", she exclaimed solemnly.
OOC:
If you have any further description of the potions, I’d be interested to know more. But what I’m most curious about is the rod:
- how long is it?
- can Ella discern what it is made of?
- is it’s body a cylinder or is the cross section square-shaped?
- do the ends of the rod show any markings or other details that might suggest their use? Are te two tips similar? (i.e., scratches indicating that it is a lever fitting in a mechanism? Or deliberate marks —such as glyphs — or an ending that suggests it might link to other items?)
- is the fish-like cross-section about half-way up the length of the rod, or is its positioning asymmetrical? Does it seem like it can move up and down the bar, or turn around it, or is it affixed?

Thrudmarr's large hands fumble slightly as he catches his share tossed over by Ella, and he holds the coins up to the lantern light, letting them clink together. A broad smile spreads across his face at the gleam of gold. "Gold pretty! Like columns!" He stuffs the coins into his belt pouch, patting it with satisfaction.

His eyes turn to the pig-headed bodies, remembering Gog's words about eating such creatures. He points at them. "Pig-men for Gog? Dead already..."
OOC:
The gold splits into 9 each, with 3 left over. The silver splits into 6 each with 4 left over. We could break down the extra gold into silver to split it among us but not sure @Burbage will let us do that in the middle of a dungeon, so someone might want to keep track of the extra.

@Burbage, I think we get XP for gold in this edition as well yeah?
OOC:
Edit: Btw, We're 2 hours into my last pint of lantern oil now, with 2 more hours remaining. If I recall it was over an hour to get down the stairs, and a further 30 minute hike back to the inn. We could think about heading back soon.

Jacky wrinkles his nose. "I don't think we should do that, Thrud. Imagine what kind of attention we'd get from trying to drag these corpses across the whole dungeon!" Not to mention, he finds the idea itself distasteful. "These columns, on the other hand... Anyone have an idea how we could strip the gold out?"
OOC:
I've got an extra pint of oil, and it's still early by my reckoning. We can at least get in a couple hours more of exploration done!

Zach turns to Jacky. It's not across the entire dungeon, it's just down the monkey steps, Jerome. Maybe we should. Looking at the pouch Ellagel threw, Zach continues. Is someone holding our found treasures or should we split them up now? At least the coins, maybe.
Feb 10, 2025 8:34 pm
"I owe you my dinner and lodgings, friends. We ought to spread our gains, so if ever one’s doom come too soon, we need not lose our plunder along with our friend," Ella commented, her eyes still fixed on the strange rod they had just recovered.
OOC:
We should keep a running ledger of stuff we’ve found, regardless of whether we spread it around IC immediately. It will help @Burbage keep track of our gold, and therefore our XP. If we could have a thread titled expedition log book or something like that, I’ll volunteer to keep notes of what we’ve done and what we’ve found…

As to our next steps, I suggest we explore a while longer if we have the light to do so safely. Maybe check the door out of this room, rather than the open passages. If there are pigmen to be found hereabouts, we might want to take fresher meat downstairs. Also, before leaving this spot, Ella will try to recover some of the six arrows she shot, since she has very limited ammunition. I’ll roll according to the DM’s earlier ruling, here.

Edit: based on those rolls, Ella recovers 4 of 6 arrows shot.

As a halfling, I've got 4-in-6 to surprise if I'm 90ft and alone ahead of the others, excepting Ellagel because she's elven.
He shakes his head, turning his mind to cheerier topics. "What’s that you have found, Ella? If it's some kind of relic, I expect the factors back at the inn will pay a handsome price. Best you be the one to carry it, though," he adds, thinking of his deal with Crisarius.

Upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that the columns aren’t in fact solid gold, or even gold-plated. Rather, they are stone pillars covered in a shimmering gold paint.

Regarding the potions, one of them is green and slightly effervescent. The other is a very dark brown, almost black, with small black flecks floating within it.

The rod is about 9" long and made from a dull metal. It is cylindrical, but rather than having a circular or square section, it has a fish-shaped section along its entire length. So, for example, it would fit end-wise into a 9" deep fish–shaped cavity with the corresponding outline (I can do a rough sketch if it’s still not clear).

You must take the coins as you find them - you can’t start converting them into other denominations! And yes, you get XP for gold, but only when you return that gold to a "safe" place. Same for magic items (more XP if you sell them, less XP if you keep them).

Expedition Log Book thread created! Thanks matmaisan for volunteering to do this. I do keep my own records for XP purposes, but there is a vast amount of stuff you could collect down here, so it would be sensible for you to keep your own records.

If you’re planning to reconfigure the party for exploration purposes with Jackie and/or Ella scouting out front, please can you update the Marching Order thread?
Oh, and finally, please can someone, anyone, roll 1d6 for surprise?!

As you discuss your next actions, you’re suddenly aware of movement to your north. You turn to see two Archonteans stepping through the secret door you entered the chamber by. One is a tall, handsome man with flowing brown hair tied back with a leather cord. The other is short and barrel-chested with close-cropped black hair and a long black beard.

Whilst looking at you with a dashing smile, the taller man says to his companion: "Ah, here we go Jason, I told you they’d be in the thick of the action. I wouldn’t expect anything less from Dalton’s Darlings. Now, which one of you is Dalton?"

You can see others congregating behind the two men in the passage leading up to the secret door.

The elf was extremely alert, in particular after seeing the unarmored, robed man. An arcanist for sure. If things went badly she’d shoot that one first.

Not for the first time in the day she regretted her spell preparation, but there was nothing to be done about it now. She could always attempt to turn one of these folk to their side, but her own party seemed outnumbered and ill-prepared.

"So, Jacky, you like stories do you? How about this one …

Once upon a time, there was a brave and handsome warrior called DALTON Erdell. He gathered a group of the kingdom’s finest adventurers and they set forth to explore the ancient ruins of Arden Vul. The Darlings quickly garnered a reputation as one of the most successful parties ever to plumb the depths of that notoriously challenging place, and the bards of Gosterwick recounted the tales of their exploits in song.

Then, one day, a group of pathetic, down-on-their-luck chancers thought that a quick route to fame and fortune would be to pretend to be members of Dalton’s Darlings. So stupid were these good-for-nothing losers that they thought Dalton would not discover this deception. Of course, thanks to Dalton’s brilliance, the ruse lasted little more than a few hours and the imposters were uncovered.

Fortunately for the ne’er do wells, Dalton, as well as being a talented swordsman and inspirational leader, is a forgiving soul. So that when the deviants got down on their knees to beg for his forgiveness, and suitably compensated him with any treasure they were carrying, he overlooked their foolishness ON THIS OCCASION. And they all lived happily ever after.
"

The rest of the Darlings look somewhat bored as Dalton delivers his performance. Jason belches and scratches the underside of his beard. Helga gives Thrudmarr a cheeky wink.

Jacky does his best to look suitably impressed while the man Dalton prattles on, even giving the man a sheepish shrug when the accusation came. "I must object, Sir Dalton, when you call us stupid! Not a one of us here haven't heard the tales of the Darlings' amazing feats. Where could we find a better group to model ourselves after? Surely it would be stupid to do anything but."

He takes a breath while the man preens. "In fact, we were hoping to bump right into you. I don't know what that Plummy fellow told you we were doing, but we are here to enlist!"

Rather than kneel, Jacky bows to the man, sweeping off an imaginary hat.

Grim just shakes broad brown-bearded head. The notion of deceit does not abide with our dwarven cletic. And yet, Lucrean precepts would dictate, best to ally with good intentions, towards a common goal of welfare. And so, Grim stays quiet, for the most part, until his friend Thrud offers simple brave commentary. Then, finally, Grim adds,
Well now, I won’t be doin’ anything of evil nature. But if de lot o’ ye intend ta explore dis dungeon…well, I’m glad we finally, found ya!

OK, I'll make a reaction roll to see how Dalton responds. A lower roll (<30%) generally indicates hostility, even an attack. A higher roll indicates a favourable response, even friendship.

I’ll add 10% because flattery is absolutely the best way to appeal to Dalton’s rampant vanity. Neither Jacky nor Ella provide an additional charisma bonus.

Zacharias Polipulis thought to himself Well, Zacharias, this isn't going well. Two days ago I was a teenager. Today, I am almost middle aged. Here we are, deep underground, with a semi-cannibalistic half-giant below us, floating brain eaters above us, and we just upset a clearly superior band of thugs.

Zacharias looks again at the collection of six well armed, well fed and contrasted that against his party. Realizing that fighting them would be tantamount to a death sentence, he let his beloved bastard sword fall to the ground and dropped to his knees. He had no clue who Dalton was and Erdell's story did not interest him. Zacharias simply wanted to live to see the sun rise once again.

Leaving his hands open on his knees, he called out to those behind him Lady Elmersglue, we have no chance against superior numbers and armament. Discretion over valor, for now.
OOC:
Please assume that this happens contemporaneously, if not before, Grim's attack. The sword and shield are out of his hands and he is on his knees, but they are in reach should the enemy decide to attack all of them given the command.

Ella does not see the point in fighting. Fleeing might have been an option, but with Zacharias surrendering, that would mean splitting the party, running into the unknown and leaving an ally behind.

Jason and Helga attack Grim, Jason with his battle axe and Helga with her broad sword.

Isidor and Yvette engage Thrud, Isidor with his short sword and Yvette with her flail.

Heliagabulus skulks (he didn’t declare any spell casting prior to rolling initiative and is reluctant to engage in anything as base as hand-to-hand combat).

Over to Thrud and Grim. Thrud - you are free to enact your decapitation of the "sleeping" Dalton if that is what you still wish to do. Grim - you may choose your target. The Darling’s armour classes are as follows:

Jason: AC 2
Helga: AC 6
Heliagabulus: AC 7
Isidor: AC 5
Yvette: AC 5

"THIS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN HURT THRUD'S FRIENDS!!!"
OOC:
Assuming auto hit and auto kill sleeping enemy...
The razor-sharp edge cleaves through Dalton's neck in one clean stroke, severing his head from his body with a sickening crunch. Blood pools around the headless corpse as Thrudmarr stands menacingly over his fallen foe, axe dripping. His fierce gaze sweeps across the remaining Darlings, challenging any who would continue to face him.

OOC:
Good job Thrudmarr! If the fighting continues, I'll have Jacky pop back up and join in.

Right, let’s make that morale check for the remaining Darlings …

In OSRIC, base morale is 50%. Taking into account the Darling’s hit dice brings it up to 60%.

However, the roll is subject to a modifier of +5% for one Darling killed and +25% for their leader being killed. I’ll also apply a further +10% for the sheer cold-blooded brutality of Dalton’s death.

So, overall, they need to roll under 60% on 1d100+40%.

Keep your fingers crossed …

Darling’s Deathmatch - Round 2
A morale failure by 15% means they will attempt a Fighting Retreat in the upcoming round 2.

Please declare your Spells and General Actions for the second round (if you plan to press the attack; alternatively, you could just let them go, in which case the combat is ended).

OOC:
I love old school D&D, live and die by the dice baby!
Thrudmarr watches with satisfaction as the remaining Darlings begin to back away. "Ha! Bossman not talk so much with no head!" He aims a wink back at the retreating Helga and extends a hand down to help Jacky up.
OOC:
Not pursuing unless the others do, but will interpose himself between them and Jacky should one of them send a spell or arrow their way.

Ella snatched her bow from the floor, and stood up, lining a couple of shots at the retreating Heliagaballus.
OOC:
I’m mostly concerned with him casting spells at us while falling back. In 5e parlance, I’d say she’s readying an action. But I guess depending on initiative she’ll shoot at him or not… we’ll have to see.

As the party’s rivals flee, Grim heaves deep dwarven Sigh of relief. I wasn’t sure I could take another hit, Grim discloses to his companions. The dwarven cletic brandishes his holy symbol, and once again utters words of self-ascribed healing.
OOC:
Cure Light Wounds on myself. Phew, lol

Jacky warily clambers to his feet, keeping an eye on the retreating Darlings. They'd be back for revenge, he had no doubt, but no help for it now! And he couldn't be too dismayed that Thrudmarr and Grim had sprung so fiercely to his defense.
OOC:
Not sure whether Jacky can get up and attack on the same round, but he'll aim at the mage too if it's doable.

Zach climbs wearily to his feet. While that was a beautiful strike, Thrustmore, we may just have made enemies of a larger and better supplied force. We need to be careful.

Darling’s Deathmatch - Round 2
As some of you are considering further attacks, let’s move to round 2. At the start of the round, everyone is still in melee range. The remaining Darlings are all planning to perform a Fighting Retreat. Those who can Parry will do so.

Grim’s Cure Light Wounds (with the existing roll of 7) will go off at the appropriate segment.

Please can someone roll for initiative …

Winning initiative, Jason, Helga, Heliagabulus, Isidor and Yvette all retreat through the secret door through which you both entered and close it behind them.

You may follow up if you wish to continue the melee. Otherwise, combat is over.

Ellagel Noredottir recovered her bow and stood up. She was pale, and beads of perspiration marked her visage.

"Quickly now, plunder the corpse and let us move on. They must not be given time to calm down and regroup! We must be far from here when their resolve is restored."
OOC:
Ella will help in the grisly work of going over Dalton's belongings, if it seems useful. But she is in panic mode, pretty sure that the other darlings will soon realise that they could exact revenge and plunder our corpses. She is, in particular, interested in finding Dalton's "exploration licence" and other papers the obnoxious leader of the darlings might've had on his person.

"Yes. And I wouldn't like to encounter those floating jelly things in this state either," Jacky says, rubbing his smarting cheek. That man had a mean hand. "Not back the way we came, though! We might walk straight into an ambush."
