Scene 4: The Tower

As the party steps through the dungeon door, it is clear they are finally entering the bottom of the tower as evidenced by the stone staircase curling upwards. Candlelight illuminates a pair of doors on the next floor and reflects off scattered treasures in the basement and on the stairs. Through the broken pieces of floor, the adventurers see scattered sunlight streaming in from higher floors. Brightly colored plants grow thickly throughout the basement. A skeleton tucked in the corner is almost engulfed in plants. A spider that must have sneaked through is skittering along narrow empty paths through the plants, but a leg touches a beautiful large petal and it freezes and shrivels up.
Oct 18, 2024 7:11 pm
Firina slowly enters through the door. Noticing the dusk smell and the colored plants.

"Yikes. This place is quite creepy" she says, looking at the skeleton engulfed by the plants. "Poor fellow. What would have happened to him?"
Oct 23, 2024 6:27 pm
After business has concluded, Alax follows behind Firina, silvered frying pan in hand, looking not quite as brave as the Dragonborn picture in Inn Plain Sight.

"Hrm, yes, I agree about the creepiness. I’ve never actually gone into the tower proper…"

Alax’s scaly head shakes sadly looking at the skeleton in the corner.

"Must have passed away long ago and ended up as fertilizer for the plants…"

Merton peeks his head in and then steps back, waiting for the others to move through before following.
Oct 24, 2024 8:31 am
Edging away from the foliage, "...I don't know. Did you see what happened to that spider? I swear it keeled over when it walked on that flower."

Pulling a silver piece out of his pouch, Hindle flings it over towards the enshrouded skeleton.
Oct 25, 2024 8:17 pm
Leana and Brickowsky follow the others.
Oct 26, 2024 1:44 am
The silver piece flips in the air, bounces off the skeleton's head, and lands on one of the bright plant's petals. It smokes a little and the edges turn black, but it remains on the petal. Alax holds the silvered frying pan close upon watching the coin turn color.
Oct 26, 2024 10:02 am
"Yikes. I don't know what those tjings are - but fon't touch the plants. Best be very careful." Firina says, entering the room very carefully, on the lookout for plants and possibly more oversized spiders.
Oct 26, 2024 5:28 pm
Leana takes a few steps towards the flowers, not too close, and tries to identify them. Maybe they could just be burned or frozen? Could they be ignored? Devoured by some animal?

Brickowsky does the same, only he seems to try and remember anything he knows about magic and plants that might fit.

Firina does see another oversized spider in the shadows, also avoiding the plants. Hindle, Merton, and Alax stay near the entrance for now, evaluating their next moves. Leana steps towards the flowers and tries to use her knowledge of plants and the reaction of the spider to determine its identity.

Upon closer inspection, Leana determines these are actually flowering shrubs called Ginger Lady oleander, known as one of many poisonous plants imported to the area. The sap the petals release can cause enough damage to instantly kill a weak creature like a spider and would cause substantial damage to the party if multiple plants are touched.

Brickowsky peers around Leana's inspection and lets out a little cry of delight. The Ginger Lady oleanders are dangerous, but the vitriol, the poisonous sap, could be collected to make elixirs of necrotic resistance. He tried to remember how they were often harvested. Fire was definitely a no go as it would aerosolize the sap, poisoning their lungs instead. If fire wouldn't work, shouldn't its opposing element, ice, work well?
Oct 27, 2024 8:46 pm
Leana and Brickowsky share their knowledge with the group, warning them against getting too close or using fire. They suggest trying ice and ask for their friends' opinions on the topic. Do they have time for this?

Leana uses just a little water on one of the smaller plants to experiment. She sprinkles some of it on a few leaves from afar, then uses her powers to freeze the liquid to find out what happens.

Clever use. I always forget about how handy that spell can be. :)

Hindle gives a derisive snort at the plants name, "More like 'Devil Lady', if you ask me." While Leana busies herself with the plants themselves, Hindle tries to determine whether there is a way to and up the stair without having to traipse through any of the caustic things.

Leana takes water out of her canteen and flicks it over to the plant the spider touched, using her magic to direct the water onto a leaf and then freezing it. The leaf is perfectly encased in ice and falls off the plant. A thick black sap slowly oozes out from the severed plant limb as the frozen leaf cracks apart on the exposed stone floor. Even from here, the group can smell a sweet, almost sickly scent from the sap. Brickowsky looks on excitedly and exclaims, "That's the vitriol needed to make an elixir of necrotic resistance!"

Meanwhile, Hindle is trying to track a path through the plants, looking for both safe access to the stairs and avoiding dangerous plants or traps. A tingle in the back of his mind and a sharp smell of salt water invades his senses as he realizes the plants with pink petals zigzag through the foliage and make a path to the stairs! They are smaller than their brethren and the party could have a higher chance of making it through without touching a caustic petal. He looks up as well. Maybe they could build something to take them above the plants?

"We could likely make our way across by treading through those pink plants. They don't seem to be the same as these nasty ones." Looking at the door they came through, "Perhaps we could this to form a narrow walkway to cover at least some of the distance more easily? I'm not sure how far it would get us."

Putting his thought into action, Hindle begins reforming the door into narrow planks to use.

Brickowsky only has to crouch down a little to gather the vitriol that flows from the injured plant. As he does so, Firina and Leana discuss how to get across safely, considering Hindle's suggestions to follow the pink plants with aid of a walkway. Hindle takes the door off its hinges and disassembles it to make narrow planks for the walkway. Merton nods at Hindle's plan and says "I'll grab some more from the dungeon." Merton and Alax go to fetch barrels and the bench to add to Hindle's wood planks for the walkway.
OOC:
@Dhakhan Go ahead and describe what kind of walkway Hindle wants to make and roll DC 10 for it to be stable enough for more than one use.

Being no carpenter, Hindle simply lays the first plank down across the plants, attempting to place it across or near the center and puts his weight on it to splay out the leaves. After the first one is down, he carefully walks along the span and places the next and continues, wending his way along as far as he can.

After the second, board he conjure Miet out of the aether and sends her off to inspect the "scattered treasures in the basement and on the stairs." "Go see what that is, and check that skelton out a bit more closely. ...and NO RESTING. If you touch any of those plants, your feet will melt off!"

Excellent! Go ahead and describe Hindle's great success! The walkway Hindle is making will be sturdy enough for everyone to get across without the walkway collapsing.
Firina is a little surprised as Hindle starts talking to what seems like thin air. Miet, meanwhile, gives a little rebellious huff, but carefully hovers well above the plants and along the stairs to the next floor to look for treasure.

Around the skeleton, she sees loose coins scattered about its bones. In its death grip, it holds a leather book and a shiny piece of parchment pokes out of the top.

As she flies around the spiraling staircase, an alcove just out of the party's view holds a shiny lantern, a green light glows out of glass that almost looks like an eye.

She flies back down and does a finishing sweep of the basement. On the far end of the room, a shelf full of bottles and paraphernalia like they saw in the dungeon. Of note, a red and yellow potion sit on the highest level.
Nov 4, 2024 2:32 am
As hindle lays the boards down he find that there happens to be a rather convenient route throug the foliage that avoids the largest and most growth, and his weight is more than enough to push the fronds and vines away from the path. Standing at the base of the stair with an extra board, stood up besides him. "Well, that seemed easy enough."

As Miet returns to relay her finding, Hindle asks her to try retreiving the book if she can do so safely, if not, she's to bring the note poking out the top. After that, he instructs her to see if she can manage the bottle. "That poor chap seems to have a book of some sort and over there," pointing off to the far end of the room is a collection of bottles with one that looks to be of some interest. I'll see if we can get them without going over ourselves."

As Hindle lays down the walkway for the group to safely go over the plants to the stairs, he notices his extra board is enough to get them within arm's reach of the skeleton and what it holds. Whoever wants to grab the book, please roll Athletics.

The pathway is at least a good 50 feet away from the shelf on the far end of the room. Miet first goes to the book and gives it a tug, but the skeleton's death grip keeps it firmly in place. A little frustrated, she pulls hard on the shiny note, but the corner she pulls on tears off instead. With a little huff, Miet goes off to check on the bottles. With effort, she is able to pick up the yellow potion and bring it back to Hindle, dropping dangerously close to the plants. She makes it safely to him, but it is clear she will not have enough stamina and strength to get the second bottle.

Alax pops over and looks at the bottle.

"Ah, a Potion of Heroism! That will be useful, I'm sure...
Nov 4, 2024 7:25 pm
Firina steps in her armor on the walkway. Carefully... it doesn't creak, it doesn't bend or break.

"Impressive build, Hindle," she smiles. "This will do... Let's see if I can reach the book..."

She walks the walk way, as close as she can to the skeleton. Wondering for a moment what or who is tugging at it and then carefully, but firmly tug at the book herself.'

"I am so sorry dear sir, but you have to let go. It will not be of any use to you anymore." she says, giving it a final firm pull.

Firina has no problem balancing and gently, but firmly removing the book from the skeleton's grip. The hand crumbles into dust, but the skeleton stays upright, its head nodding almost in thanks for removing the last of its mortal burdens. Firina thumbs through the book and pulls out the shiny piece of parchment, a little corner torn off by unknown forces to her.

Alax being rather nosy, the dragonborn comes over to look at what Firina has recovered.

"Oh, I recognize those symbols on the cover! A Manual of Quickness of Action! And that's convenient, looks like the parchment is a Spell Scroll of Protection from Energy. Wonder what the poor fellow was expecting or, in his case, not expecting..."
Nov 12, 2024 3:13 am
Merton has scooted across the walkway and gone up the steps a little. Alax looks back at Leana and Brickowsky.

"Well, should we head on up everyone...?"
Nov 12, 2024 8:58 am
Hindle starts up the stairs as Alax follows after, confident the others will come along. He watches the way up, looking for the alcove with the strange lantern with it's wierd lights. He sends Miet up ahead to scout the way.
Nov 14, 2024 3:47 am
Hindle stops halfway up the stairs to look into the alcove with the strange lantern. The lantern itself shimmers and shines more than its metal should and a green light glows out of glass that almost looks like an eye. Merton sidles up and looks around Hindle. "Shiny. A little creepy. Are we taking it?"

Alax shrugs, not sure what fascinates Hindle so, and continues up to the next floor with the pair of doors illuminated by candlelight from sconces on each side. Firina follows, cradling the book and spell she adroitly collected on the way up. With Brickowsky finished up with gathering the vitriol, Leana and Brickowsky join Alax and Firina to wait on the second floor for now.

Miet scouts ahead of the party, not noticing anything more of interest on the way to the second floor. She sneaks a peek on the stairs up to the third floor and finds an identical pair of doors with sconces illuminating it. Another spider skitters about on the third floor and then disappears out of sight around the spiraling staircase. Miet decides to wait and returns to Hindle's side.

"Why not? It's a bit easier to handle that this skull, patting the large round bundle at his waist."

Hindle reaches into the alcove with his mind, telekinetically lifting the lantern and bringing to his hand. Holding the lantern by it's handle, Hindle turns it this way and that having a closer look at it.

Brickowsky uses his mind to push Hindle up a few feet at least, hoping it gives them the edge to prevent the warlock from slipping free.

In a moment of clarity or maybe his patron's nudging, Hindle disappears in a puff of grey smoke and appears next to the group on the floor above. Brickowsky exclaims in relief as Leana releases her thorn whip and they turn to focus on their surroundings and the lantern Hindle has acquired.

Looking over the floor they are now on, the group sees most of the floor on this level is broken and the poisonous plants can be seen below. More broken tiles on the next floor above allow sunlight to filter down, helping the plants to grow. The winding stairs they took are still stairs to the next floor up, but the set down have now become a ramp. In front of them is a set of double doors flocked by wall sconces holding candles. Merton looks it over and no traps this time at least. Not even a lock on the doors!

After a good look around, Hindle and Brickowsky focus on the strange lantern. Hindle holds it up high, giving further illumination to the gloomy corners. Scattered gold coins can be seen in some of them.

With Hindle's aid, Brickowsky is able to determine after some minutes that this is a Lantern of Revealing. The hooded lantern can burn for 6 hours on just 1 pint of oil and appears to be full right now. When unhooded, the lantern can illuminate a 30-foot radius and dimly light up an additional 30 feet out. Invisible creatures and objects are visible as long as they are within 30 feet of an unhooded lantern. The hood can be lowered to dim the light to a 5-foot radius if needed.

"We have wasted enough time here. Don't forget there is a helpless little kitten in mortal danger!"
Leana continues towards the double doors and opens one side determined to proceed with her mission.
Nov 28, 2024 3:21 am
Leana leads the way, fearlessly opening one side of the double doors. The candlelight sconces weakly light the entrance as a large dark room opens before the group. Sunlight shines down on a single stone column exactly Merton's height with a golden apple shining on top of it. A small golden plaque is attached to the front of the column. Behind the column with the apple, stone statues of different creatures reach towards the apple, bathed in their own ray of sunlight.

To the left is a statue of a tall regal human man, a crown upon his head and an outstretched palm almost like he is offering a hand. Directly behind the column is a statue of a large beholder with nine eye stalks dancing around its head, the final tenth empty stalk reaching towards the column. To the right is a statue of a 3-foot tall fairy with wings almost as big as her; she is laughing and cups both hands up and out to the column.

Coming up close behind Leana, the wizard steps to the side to see more of this room. Druids grow tall these days ....

He looks back at the statues and amuses himself with his own thoughts. As he lets his thoughts wander, his wizardly intuition, combined with his darkvision, kicks in as he continues to peer around the room. Faded frescoes lie behind each statue. Behind the human statue is a faded owl. Behind the beholder statue is a faded dove. Behind the fairy statue is a faded peacock.

With almost otherworldly knowledge, he also notices a tuft of blue-black fur near the beholder statue.

Looking from left to right, the dwarf doesn't want to give an immediate answer. Instead he takes an even longer look around. Maybe the kitten is snorring behind a statue? Or is there a clue hidden in the frescos?

Awakening a beholder just to ask him, if he had eaten a kitty, seems a rather quick way to loose ones life. Maybe not the way to go. King, Fairy, Beholder. Owl, dove, peacock. Rubbing his goatee'd chin Brickoswky tries to discern hints or see a connection between all of them.

Firina moves forward to comfort Alax as the others putter about the statues. The dragonborn only sobs harder.

As Hindle steps back from the golden apple, having second thoughts about grabbing it like he did the lantern, he mumbles to himself and ponders the situation. At least nothing invisible is showing up with his lantern currently.

Leana looks about trying to find tracks in the dust of the floor. With her strong tracking skills, she does find feline paw prints that circle about and seemingly under the beholder statue, but then vanish into thin air, much like when she was following the tracks at Inn Plain Sight. There are no paw prints leading to or from the statue. There also appear to be a set of footprints in the same area that does not belong to any of them, but similarly disappear like the paw prints into thin air.

Brickowsky takes this time to ponder their situation and what could have happened to Pouncy. It would certainly be no problem to leave this strange room and continue up the tower as the steps up were unchanged after Hindle removed the lantern. There is definitely another floor up as indicated by the sunlight that came through the broken floor tiles. The only way out appears to be the way they came in and the door is still wide open for them to leave. It does appear though that Pouncy's last location was in this room as evidenced from the fur and Leana's investigation.

The dwarf's head hurts a bit from the disjointed situation and cannot see much of a connection at this point. However, his arcane knowledge does remind him of stories he has heard of these birds being associated with goddesses of myth. The goddesses each commanded the poor human to give them a golden apple he held, but the wizard cannot quite remember who he gave it to. The owl usually is associated with wisdom, the peacock with royalty, and the dove with love.
Dec 4, 2024 5:15 pm
Still standing there and scratching his neck, Brickowsky looks from one statue to the next. Dove is love? And Alax seems to genuinely love his fluffy displaced friend. So... before he can overthink it, the wizard takes the apple up with his magehand and let the fruit fly to the ... BEHOLDER!

If this really unpetrifies the monstrosity this would be a brief encounter and an inglorious end to their lives. But hey! They would have encountered a genuine legen ... wait for it ... dary monster.

But: Maybe there is no beholder!
OOC:
He will try touching the beholder, setting it in sight of the beholder, or on top of it and so on, trying to coax out a reaction of the statue if necessary. :)
Dec 6, 2024 3:29 am
Fortune favors the bold! The wizard decides to use his mage hand to remove the apple from the column. Nothing appears to happen. He then moves the golden apple over to the beholder statue! He carefully touches the apple to the statue and removes it, but nothing happens. He hovers the apple in front of its eye and considers dropping the apple on top of its large head as nothing continues to happen. Finally, he decides to throw caution to the wind and carefully places the golden apple in the empty stalk of the beholder.

Almost instantaneously, the stone skin of the beholder cracks and falls to the ground. The other statues also crumble to dust.

A living purple beholder now emerges from its stone shell, still cradling the golden apple in its final stalk. Its large eye roves around looking at the room's inhabitants and a hungry look almost gleams in its eye. As Firina moves to prepare herself for what has happened, the beholder's eye stops upon the revealed dragonborn. Faster than anyone can react, the beholder zooms past everyone and pounces at Alax! Alax puts claws up in surprise, but cannot react in time! A big pink tongue comes out and licks their face! The beholder then bounces a little from side to side, staring at Alax who only stares back in shock, almost dropping the precious silvered frying pan.

Hahaha! That's so evil Quilltid! I was so hesitant, that I nearly didn't act at all. A genuine beholder would have devoured us. Good that we play LEGO. I thought: alright - this MUST be a joke or tick. They wouldn't let us die right because of a stupid mistake. At least this is what I told myself. ;)

@Dhakhan> seems so. :D good for us. ;)
Breathing out the moment he recognises this situation wouldn't erupt in violence, the dwarf puts his shaking hands on his knees and takes a few slow breaths. Gems and Stones! - what a relief!

Straightening Brickoswky places his hand in the pouch they had found and takes out the plush mouse (stuffed with catnip per Leana's experience and Druidic knowledge) and throws it towards Alax. "That's a sight for sore eyes." he compliments the dragonborn.

Taking a more thorough look, the wizard tries to discern if there can be something done about the transformation. He extends his head up his druid friend and starts to discuss with Leana.

Heh heh, blame the adventure that includes a beholder in it! You guys did well and Alax is reunited with Pouncy!
Alax deftly catches the plush mouse stuffed with catnip that Brickowsky has been keeping in the pouch they found at Inn Plain Sight. The dragonborn looks confused, but the beholder immediately reacts: sniffing, spinning, and one of its eye stalks "pets" the mouse.

"P-Pouncy...?"

The beholder pauses its interactions with the plush mouse to lick Alax again. It now places the golden apple on the ground to instead grabs the mouse in its eye stalk and plays with it.

Alax sighs with relief.

"Thank you for finding my beloved Pouncy. I'm sorry she gave you all a scare. I insist, whenever you stay in the valley, you must stay at Inn Plain Sight. Free of charge! But now I must figure out how Pouncy got this way..."

Alax and Pouncy sequester themselves to the corner. Brickowsky, now relieved of the tension that was growing, consults with the others about what can be done about Pouncy's situation. Leana and Firina are still distracted a bit by what has happened. Merton does not appear from the shadows.

Hindle wanders over to check on what is happening. As Brickowsky explains the situation and they both look at Pouncy turned beholder, Alax's silvered frying pan reflects off the sunlight a little and Brickowsky sees one of the beholder's eye stalks is reflected in the pan as a long black tail instead. Thinking back to Merton's communication that Merry had disappeared into a door or gate thing and Pouncy's previous stone appearance, magic is at work around this place. Maybe Pouncy would be restored to its original form if one of them could dispel the enchantments in the area. Or maybe the Lantern of Revealing Hindle picked up has additional enchantments, necessitating the trap.

Strangely, the sounds of terror, flesh being rent and the sinews snapped did not seem to be coming. Confusion, yes. Delight and pleasure, definitely. Releasing the shadows he'd drawn about himself (certainly futile in any case given the circumstances), Hindle pulled his face out fo the the conrner of the room he had run, to begin making his own sounds of confusion, and then delight and pleasure at not being promptly destroyed. Who cares why the beholder is playing with a stuffed toy. It was evidently happy, so Hindle was happy. Edging fully out of the corner, he wanders over to see what is happening. "So, this ...is the cat now?"
Dec 11, 2024 4:34 am
Alax smiles a big toothy grin and nods happily at Hindle's question.

"Yes indeed, somehow this is Pouncy! I wonder how she got this way though..."

Alax tries to pet the beholder, but trips a little over the golden apple as he does so.

Leana, quickly sizing up the situation, decides to try to restore the poor creature back to its original form. Who knows what mischief a cat disguised as a beholder could cause? With the same sharp precision as before, she casts dispel magic straight at the enchanted beholder!

The beholder drops the plush mouse as all its eye stalks tense and freeze. Then, one by one, the pebbly skin on the eye stalks begin to crumble like the stone statues and reveal blue-black fur instead: a tail, three tentacles, and six legs. Large paws steady themselves on the ground as the beholder's round body shakes like a cat shaking off water. As it does so, more pebbly skin falls off and finally reveals a very large displacer beast. Roaring Kitty is clearly not a fan of their new companion.

"Oh, oh my, Pouncy, how are you feeling...?"

The displacer beast crouches down and its powerful jaws open...into a big yawn. It then jumps into Alax's arms and gives the dragonborn another big lick!

"Oh, truly I owe you so much for getting Pouncy back to normal..."

The dragonborn looks over Pouncy and frowns a little.

"The poor thing looks so emaciated! I need to get back to Inn Plain Sight right away. Once we reach one of those windows, we'll head out and wait for you back at the Inn with some fresh hot wings! And maybe some bath water..."
Dec 12, 2024 11:21 am
Petting Roaring Kitty so that the little furball doesn't get too stressed, Brickoswky tells him of tendies still to come and how they will see the moon together. This usually helps to calm the dear bugger.

"Displacer beast" the dwarf mumbles out of the corner of his mouth as Hindle brings up Pouncy. An animal with tentacles, the powers of illusions and a taste for human flesh. But yeah - why not: a cat now.

Suddenly standing straight, the wizard takes a more than wary look around. A valid question Alax brought up right there. How did the beast end as an eye fiend?

Informing his friends about this last thought, he asks: "Does anybody see a rune that could have triggered the transformation?"

Looking primarily around the place, the beholder had stood, it is currently unclear for Brickowsky how to proceed from here on. How do they keep ascending the tower?

"Alax? Have you been hither in the past? How do we find the stairs to the next level?"
Dec 13, 2024 2:05 am
Roaring Kitty stays behind Brickowsky, away from Pouncy, but at least no longer looking distressed.

Alax surprisingly places the displacer beast down a lot gentler than the dragonborn's physique suggests. Pouncy picks up its plush mouse and plays with it while Alax replies to the dwarf's question.

"No, unfortunately I have never been this far before. It looks like the sunlight in the tower was coming from above us though so I think we can just take that winding staircase up to the next floor. We can't go back down without sliding into those plants after our friend grabbed that lantern..."

Alax whistles and pulls out a plush frog. Pouncy picks up her plush mouse and begins to follow the dragonborn. The group follows as Alax leads the way up the winding staircase to the next floor.

On this level of the tower, the open window Miet told Hindle about on the outside of the tower lets in sunlight over most of the floor. Another large set of double doors flocked by candle sconces dominates the wall opposite the window. Backed against one wall is a shrine. Carved above the shrine are five stone dragon heads, and resting on the shrine's alter is a lustrous green orb. A large key rests in a small stand on the floor. Parts of the floor are crumbled, allowing the sunlight from the window to stream down to the bottom floor and the poisonous plants. The winding stairs continue up, but all they see above is the underside of the main tower roof with its many beams and supports.

Brickowsky keeps an eye out as he follows and makes sure to avoid the gaps in the flooring. He stops to inspect the double doors on the way to examine the shrine and sees a large lock on the door. Leana instead heads directly to the shrine. Her sharp eyes spot unusual lines in the floor in front of the key and she stops Brickowsky from moving further and stepping onto a trap. Merton and Firina stay close to Alax as the dragonborn approaches the window to assess a way down. Finally, Hindle looks about the room with his new lantern, on the lookout for the spider Miet mentioned seeing on this floor. On the side of the stairs facing away from illumination, partially in darkness, Hindle's lantern reveals an alcove with potion bottle, but guarded by an invisible giant wolf spider. It is busy feasting on an unwary bird that must have paused in the window and does not bother with the party yet.

are the strange lines bits of spiderweb?
Dec 22, 2024 4:00 am
After keeping Brickowsky from walking onto a trap, Leana takes a closer look at the unusual lines on the floor. She first considers this might be the results of a monster messing with the flooring, but it is not spider webs or claw marks. It is instead straight lines perpendicular to the stone and grout. With a gentle push, she finds the lines are the outlines of a trap door that has not been secured. Looking underneath, the trap door would have the person fall through a hole in the ground below and then to the deadly plants on the bottom level of the tower!
Dec 22, 2024 7:50 pm
Leana relates her findings to the others, then approaches the giant spider careful not to come too close. She wouldn't want to intrude more than necessary, especially when the spider is munching so peacefully.

She stands very still when adressing the creature: "Good day, Lord Spider! So sorry to bother you during your meal." Knowing how particular spiders can be, Leana gives a curt little bow before she continues. "We do not mean to harm or be harmed. We are but humble travellers who are looking for your advice."

The spider’s hairs stand on end and it quickly gulps down what is left of the bird it is consuming. It is surprised the druid can see him, but he soon espies the lantern Hindle holds and realizes it is the same one the funny fellow would use when walking around the tower. He lets out a little annoyed sigh and wipes its fangs for a moment with its forelegs. It then steps out of the alcove, the potion bottle still half-hidden in the shadows, to talk with the inquisitive human.

"How now, humans always find their business to be more important than others. What advice could humble travellers need from a wolf spider who minds his own business? Nothing interesting about me, as you can clearly see."

Despite its words, Leana and Hindle notice its eight eyes wander to the double doors before refocusing on the two of them.
Dec 28, 2024 6:22 pm
Making good use of the time that the spider pays attention to his two friends, Brickowsky utilises his invisible magic hand to gather the flask. A potion in need is a fine potion indeed, or some such.

Looking at Leana, the dwarf expects a translation of the spiders' words. Does it know anything? Where are the cultists? Is The Hard Way still around? Where is the dragon egg the group stole? What colour is the egg? So many things to learn.
OOC:
Through my telekinetic feat, the mage hand is invisible. Do I need to roll anything to get the potion without being detected? :)

"Oh great spider, we have come to prevent further annoyance, I can assure you. A group of bad men, real scorpions, you see, have stolen an egg. One of the sort that if it hatches, it might burn everything to the ground - including your cosy palace. So if you have seen anything strange going on, any other creatures mucking about, we'd appreciate the heads up. Should you in your wisdom know any advice for us going through these here doors, you so wisely indicated with your many sharp eyes earlier, we would be much obliged and - should you wish it - will spread the tale of the great brother spider who reigns on this floor."
Dec 30, 2024 1:55 am
OOC:
Love Leana's dialogue with the spider!
The wolf spider moves forward a little more, appeased by the druid's obeisance, the spider answers without additional enticement.

"Man delights not me, but I will satisfy your curiosity. I know little about eggs other than spider eggs, but I did see a large group of adventurers like yourselves venture through those very double doors and ne'er come back out. A bearded smiling man likes to walk in and out, but we mostly ignore each other and live our lives. I like to stay invisible and he likes to use that lantern there to visit me once in a while and ask if I see anything like you do. If you believe he plans to upset this balance, please take care of him and his friends and leave us be in this tower."

As Leana converses and summarizes the conversation to the group, Brickowsky uses the conversation to reach out with his invisible mage hand and attempts to grab the potion behind the spider. Brickowsky, please roll Dexterity vs the spider's perception.

Ha ha, that spider is really seeing nothing! Must be hungover from his bird snack.
The wolf spider's move forward is more than enough for Brickowsky's mage hand to nip the potion and bring it back to the dwarf with the spider none the wiser. As the potion bottle settles in his hand, he disturbingly sees an eyeball floating in the yellow liquid. Its brown iris swirls about and settles itself to look directly at the wizard. Leana and Hindle silently watch the potion bottle be whisked away, but stay focused on the wolf spider to prevent suspicion.

That spider is so enchanted by Leana, that it is nearly blind for everything else. *G*
Pressuming, that this is some kind of divination magic, the dwarf inconspicuously dusts of his shoulders and straightens his mantle. In common he suggests: "Well ... let us find this Rumwell punk." before he bows to the wolf spider and mumbles something along the lines of: "May your butt always so nicely hairy as today."

If no one expresses any objections, the wizard starts waddling towards the stairs. Somewhere this tower had to end. And Brickoswky maybe has an inkling who and what can be found up there.
Jan 3, 2025 9:53 am
Hindle points desultorily at the key, then the doors, "But?" Noting Birckowsky's sure stride, he looks wistfully at the glowing orb, and siddles around the spiders alcove towards the stairs, "We can always come back later, I guess." All the while, he assiduously keeps the lantern's light on the creature. "May your fangs ever find birds, oh Big Spider."
Jan 3, 2025 10:35 pm
Leana nods, then half bows to the spider before going after the boys. Time to find out what was hiding behind that door.
Jan 6, 2025 12:46 am
Brickowsky waddles around the wolf spider up the stairs and see they end at the top of the room and tower. All he sees is the underside of the main tower roof with its many beams and supports. Lots of webs and dust coat the beams. He looks down between them at Leana, Hindle, and the wolf spider below. He then looks at Alax, Pouncy, Merton, and Firina standing to the side, watching the scene.

Hindle looks about at the key, the glowing orb, and all that is interesting to him in the room, but he finally focuses on keeping the lantern on the wolf spider to keep it visible and bids his adieus as he follows behind Brickowsky. The wolf spider gives what could be considered a small bow and it scuttles back into its hidey-hole. It does not even seem to be bothered that the potion bottle is gone and just focuses on grooming its fangs.

Leana also bids adieu and follows after the boys in moving away from the wolf spider, half bowing back in return. She moves to the locked double doors. They are a large set of wooden double doors flocked by candle sconces, dominating the wall opposite the window. The large metal lock glints in the sunlight from the setting sun through the window.

"Ummmm. This place is making me feel claustraphobic." Hindle then turns back and heads down the stairs. Just before heading down, he hesitates before placing his foot down upon them. He tells Bricko, "Don't touch anything." and hurries back down. Reaching out abscently with his hand, Hindle uses his telekinesis to grab the key and pulls it towards him and heads towards Leana and the doors. "Think we'll need this."
Jan 7, 2025 7:44 pm
With practiced ease, Leana flexes her fingers and takes out the water bottle to freeze a lock blocking her way once more. Hindle, seeing nothing more of interest, heads back down the stairs and carefully makes his way to the double doors, beckoning the others forward carefully. As the lock bursts and its pieces fall to the ground, Hindle uses his telekinesis to grab the strangely placed key and prepares for what comes next.
