4. Fog of War.

Aug 19, 2024 7:22 am
Lord Tom Collin:
Lord Tom Collin looks outrage and shouts mainly to himself, "They wouldn't not DARE!" Seeming on a que, bandit Johnson is in the tent with weapon drawn.
Collin turns to Johnson, "Call all to arms. We leave in two hours." Wordless Johnson leaves the tent while sheaving sword.
Collin looks to the three, "What to do with you."

Geoffrey Moonstruck:
Geoffrey, intuiting that matters are reaching a head, finishes his wine and takes the opportunity to nourish himself. Who knows what Collins has in mind for them? Almost anything is better faced without hunger pangs.
Moments later Hanson & Grog, drag in Cosrath. He has metal restraining helmet that instead of a lock holding it close, it has cheap piece of rope but it is tight enough that Dragonborn Cosrath can breath and his hands are tied behind his back. Hanson sneers, "Found sneaking into the camp." and Grog in a bit of reminder to Hason, "A new guest."

Grog stands Cosrath up and moves him to Lord Tom Collin. Tom draws out his longsword that has gleaming edges and slices away the bonds holding Cosrath arms like butter. "Go to them and I will deal with all four of you." He motions to the others at the dinner table. Cosrath can easily undo the rope holding the iron helmet and free his head.
Aug 19, 2024 4:14 pm
As noises grow closer to the tent entrance, Geoffrey looks over just as one of Collins’s men lead in yet another poor soul. This one was different, though, very different. Geoffrey knew of the Dragonborn; in his years of study and searching, the rare draconic texts he found and deciphered proved very informative. However, he had never seen a Dragonborn in the flesh—in the scales?—before. I wonder what this soul’s story is.
Aug 19, 2024 7:41 pm
The white-scaled dragonborn quickly shakes his arms free once Tom cuts the bonds, though a small chain remains wrapped around his left forearm. Seems like it's his, as he snatches the rock crystal dangling at the end of it and grasps it tightly.

He turns his head in the direction of Tom Collin's voice, then deftly undoes the ropes with his free hand. Silver-blue eyes peek out from under the helmet, rather than the typical red or gold of dragonborn - first looking at Tom and his longsword, then the bandits that had brought him in, then the three visitors.

The dragonborn hugs the helmet close to his chest as he slowly backs away from Tom to join the others by the dining table, not sitting down or saying a word yet. His posture suggests he wants to run, but he doesn't. Perhaps from being afraid to do so, after being captured so quickly.
Aug 19, 2024 8:18 pm
Davros smirks at the whole scene You know, were kinda like flies, gathering at this table one by one.... he laughs to himself thinking about the whole situation of people arriving while Tom was dining.

He then stretches and thinks out loud. What about this master Tom, how about we join you with the whole orc ordeal, I bet from your reaction that you're going to at least demand an explanation, right? he raises a brow in a suggesting manner. I cannot speak about the other two, but me and my friend... nonchalantly gestures at the half-orc would be interested in helping you out on the matter. Of course two men compared to your army is nothing, but, all of us are interested in settling this matter as soon and efficiently as possible...so would you graciously allow us to join your banner for this cause? he suggests, obviously leaving Tom the role of decision-making and authority to the bandit captain.
Aug 19, 2024 9:07 pm
Geoffrey watches the dragonborn's entry. The colors of my lady, silver and blue. This is a good omen. I wonder how he is called? Davros's speech intrudes on Geoffrey's reflections.
Davros Pine says:
What about this master Tom, how about we join you with the whole orc ordeal
As Davros finishes his remarks, Geoffrey turns to him. My apologies, what ordeal do you mean? It seems you have had an entire conversation with our gracious host prior to either I or this gentleman, here Geoffry turns and nods at the dragonborn, of which neither of us had the benefit of hearing. All I know is that I agreed to provide the aid of Our Lady of Silver to anyone facing the terrors of the night—the orcs. Geoffrey wants to do his level best as to not antagonize Lord Collins any further. He hopes emphasizing the orcs makes that clear.
Granted, I am at the disposal of our host, but wouldn't it make sense, master woodsman, to bring the two of us recent additions up to speed?

Garrosh turns at the 2 newbies and snorts "You overestimate what you've missed. Long story short, we found an orc-raid survivor while coming here, sent her to town, got captured, and it looks now there's going to be fight against the orcs because of the raid. We do not really know the details, besides that."

Lord Tom Collin has another one of those distance moments as everyone was talking. You hear my mumbles the words "Lady Feymore" as he rushes to the tent flap leaving. You hear him shout from outside "Johnson. We leave now!", "Grog take of the guests."

Moment later bandit Grog appears with shortsword drawn but not really in a very hostile mode. He has just stopped and looking at all four of you. He is caught in mixed emotions but strangely hostility isn't one of them.

Everything seems to have become an emergency. Tons of noise and even horns going off.
Aug 20, 2024 1:22 am
Thank you, Garrosh was it? Geoffrey says.

Turning to the Dragonborn, Geoffrey suggest You may want to grab something to eat and drink. Moonmaiden only knows what will happen now and when we will be able to eat next. My name is Geoffrey, Geoff for short. With whom do I have the privilege of speaking?
Aug 20, 2024 3:09 am
The dragonborn hesitates for a moment, then responds, "Cosrath."

Cosrath glances at the food, but still doesn't eat. He jerks his head in the direction of Garrosh, after hearing his summary of the events so far. "So. You are the ones the Burgermeister sent out first. I thought there were more than three that hadn't returned to town yet."

"Anyone facing the terrors of the night? It's not just anyone. Lady Fermore's gone missing, and you brought back her daughter and the dead bodyguard. Didn't you?" He nods towards the entrance of the tent, indicating the commotion outside. "Of course there's going to be a great fuss over the Lady. A real high ranking noble. The kind with lots of money or connections, or both."
Aug 21, 2024 2:26 am
"The bandits killed a few of us. Besides that though, that was a noble family that got attacked? But the carriage looked more like one belonging to a merchant, and there did not look like there any guards traveling with them. Were they traveling incognito or something?", asks Garrosh

OOC:
Given the back and forths between Garrosh, Davros, and Collins, together with what Cosrath just said, I'm going to consider that Geoffrey now knows "in character" the main points of threads 2 & 3.
Listening to the conversations, Geoffrey does some mental calculations. Oh dear Lady of Silver, how ill-informed is that wretched burgermeister. Sending me out here without any hint of the complexities of competing bands of marauders and the tragic deaths of local nobility. I wonder how he keeps his position with such rank incompetence.

Geoffrey looks at Garrosh and says, In my travels, Garrosh, I have found that many people tend to downplay their status and wealth when traveling in dangerous areas. No point in handing out engraved copperplate invitations for others to kill them, you know, he says with a smile. Regardless, at this point I do not believe we have any free agency; we are subject to whatever Lord Collins, or his aide-de-camp Grog, has in mind for us.

Turning to Grog, Geoffrey asks May I know your intentions with us, please?.
Aug 21, 2024 6:21 am
Young Grog says, "This sucks. I'm stuck here babysitting all of you and I could be out there rescuing. I'm to keep an eye on all of you and not let you out of my sight." He signs. Obviously, a man missing his chance for adventure. He doesn't appear to be exceptional bright, but obviously loyal to Tom Collin. You can hear the sounds movement and informing horns.
Aug 21, 2024 6:54 am
Davros relaxes into the chair and and sighs lightheartedly while looking at the top of the tent. Well, a good problem is a one that solves itself. So... I have nothing against it. he then looks at the disappointed youth and sighs But you know, your master didn't say anything about babysitting us here exactly, how about each of us promises to be a good little guest and we all joyfully follow Toms group? he laughs under his breath intrigued about the decision of the underling-in-charge.

Youthful Grog seems to be perplexed about that thought. "If Tom saw me with all of you out there, he would have my hide, but I could see the lady FERMORE! They say she has given land on whim."
Aug 21, 2024 2:21 pm
Geoffrey looks concerned as Davros talks. He interjects let me understand this, Davros. You wish to follow this group of ban—. Here, Geoffrey coughs, obviously considering that Grog is still in the room even though Collins has left, mercenaries into battle, notwithstanding that they disposed of two, no make that three of your companions without a second thought mere hours ago? In the fog of war and the thick of battle you want to be possibly between them and their objective? That does not sound most prudent.

Furthermore, you may not have to like, or approve of, Collins, but he does not strike me as someone ignorant of either tactics or strategy. Moreover, from our discussion, it is amply clear that Collins is a man who detests being gainsaid, let alone the implication that he is not at the top of his game. Showing up in contravention of his orders isn't wise at all. I counsel we let not rush pell-mell into potential suicidal situations. If Collins feels it is in his best interests to use our services, I am sure he will ask—nay demand—their use at the risk of a rather discommoding alternative to our general well-being. Geoffrey stops, fills a goblet from a carafe of water at the table, and downs it in a few gulps.
Aug 22, 2024 3:23 am
"Geoffrey makes a good point, but it might be worth to at least get to where we can see the fight, that way, on the off change the orcs are winning, we can consider interfering. What say you Grog? This could be your change to be a hero after all." asks Garrosh

While looking at Geoffrey doing his monologue Davros stuffs his pockets with some bread and fruit. Giving him 'the bruh look' when he mentions that he wants to stick his nose in the midst of the battle, does he really look like that much of a fool to that man? Eh, who cares...

After Garrosh's words the forester beams in happyness That's exactly what I wanted. Garrosh, my friend I'm slowly starting to believe that you're a mind-reader....Now, come on, ideally the massacre will be already over, but stuff your pockets, a good show is better with some snacks! he then turns towards Grog So, we're waiting, honored babysitter.

Now that all the bandits are out of the tent except one, Cosrath drops the restraining helmet into a corner of the tent and returns to standing, a bit less tense.

He looks at Garrosh and Davros as they try to convince Grog. The dragonborn doesn't quite smile with his mouth, but the shape of his eyes suggest approval of this plan - he'd like to get out of this place too.
Aug 22, 2024 1:50 pm
Unsure Grog ponders the thought a moment and says "I do know a rather unused way into the Orcs."
Aug 22, 2024 3:15 pm
Geoffrey shakes his head ruefully. If this is how I am meant to finally greet you, Night White Lady, then so be it. Now I must do my part to convince the young thug. I would like to go on record that defying a mercenary captain—Geoffrey was not going to use the proper phrase, "murderous bandit thug leader", so long as one of the thugs was in the room—is not a good idea under normal circumstances, let alone during a battle.

Geoffrey looks at Grog and continues, however, the captain clearly has confidence in master Grog here, and has afforded him the authority to "take care of the guests", as he said. If you feel that taking us to a position where you are able to watch over us yet may be able to help your master, so be it. Turning to look pointedly at Davros, Geoffrey concludes After all, we are only four and there are at least twenty of you in the camp, and we know what happened the last time you were attacked by a smaller force.

Geoffrey then utters a stream of liquid syllables.

Davros: That's exactly what I wanted. Garrosh, my friend I'm slowly starting to believe that you're a mind-reader. Now, come on, ideally the massacre will be already over, but stuff your pockets, a good show is better with some snacks! So, we're waiting, honored babysitter.

Grog: I do know a rather unused way into the Orcs.

Georffrey: I would like to go on record that defying a mercenary captain is not a good idea under normal circumstances, let alone during a battle. However, the captain clearly has confidence in master Grog here and has afforded him the authority to take care of the guests, as he said. If you feel that taking us to a position where you are able to watch over us yet may be able to help your master, so be it. Geoffrey Moonstruck said something to Davros Pine in Elvish.

Aug 22, 2024 8:35 pm
The half-elf raises a brow, not understanding the secrecy, he finishes chewing and answers using the same tone...
Aug 22, 2024 8:37 pm
@GeneCortess add anyone who knows elvish pls, if there is anyone.

My research says only Davros & Geoffrey speak Elvish.
Aug 22, 2024 9:22 pm
Abruptly annoyed Grog says, "Why speak in hidden language. It is rude. It takes an extra hour or more of travel to come to the Orcs from a backside."
Aug 23, 2024 7:39 pm
Geoffrey shrugs and says nothing, waiting for Grog to make up his mind.
Aug 23, 2024 11:39 pm
Davros grins. Well, that's unmistakably true. But he did ask me a really uncomfortable question and I didn't want to make such a swell company uncomfortable. he reassures the lad while being honest, but still actually interested, if he will pry. Anyhow, that could provide some entertainment while his steady half-orc friend is thinking.

Grog looks to the entrance way, "Eat. Some time must pass." and he goes to table and immediately looks for choice items to eat. You know he doesn't get eat like this.
Aug 24, 2024 12:45 pm
Upon seeing Grog go for the food so quickly, Cosrath decides to eat as well, eventually sitting down for a proper meal. He seems to prefer the meat.

In between bites of some local game, he turns to Grog. "What do you know about the orcs? Are they a large group under a captain like you are?"
Aug 24, 2024 2:03 pm
Grog says as he devours any food rapidly, "Orc are vile creatures, but Tom has agreements with them. Rob but not kill. Is how I think it goes. Something like that. We are not allowed to attack them." He eats the food like someone who knows he shouldn't be. This is so much better than he normally gets. And like Cosrath, Grog favors meat.
Aug 24, 2024 4:58 pm
Garrosh decides to eat some of the food as well, but tries to stick to lighter stuff. He wants to be in peak condition in case he has to fight soon.

Davros grins happily, though, while not eating as heartily as the rest, he does snack while turning to Cosrath Tell me my scaled friend, is the whole muzzle thing a common practice when moving the dragonborn against your will. I mean it looks a bit, how should I put it.... Excessive....
Aug 25, 2024 8:33 pm
"We will leave soon for that back way into the Orcs lair. Hopefully all will be dealing Tom on his huge lizard." as he gouges himself and mostly on hearty meat." He appears very interested to take the party to the Orc's lair. Perhaps more to see the LADY.

Aug 26, 2024 12:28 am
Cosrath bares his teeth and exhales slightly. The air in front of his mouth fogs up, as if he were holding ice inside. "You bind a human's hands so they cannot use weapons. You close a dragonborn's mouth so they cannot use their breath." He seems to understand the bandits' actions, but adds, "Doesn't make helmets like those any more comfortable."

"Huge lizard? Never seen that before." He tilts his head, intrigued by the idea of Tom on such a mount. "An agreement, huh. Wonder why the orcs broke it when they haven't until now... unless they somehow knew they could get enough gold to make killing and capturing worthwhile."

Grog says he eats, "I'm like others. We thought Tom wrong about agreement but none of our men have died. He was right about that. Now there is no agreement. Many will die."
Aug 26, 2024 6:51 pm
With whom was the agreement?, Geoffrey asks, trying to take advantage of Grog’s loquaciousness. Do the orcs have a warchief or a shaman who speaks for the tribe? Would be nice if taking out a few high-priority targets would send the rest into chaotic disarray, Geoffrey thinks.
Aug 26, 2024 9:35 pm
Grog replies back, "I know the same thing everyone knows. They are just Orcs. They will kill you if they get a chance." He doesn't indicate that he really knows anything about them. Seem he just knows a back way in.
Aug 27, 2024 3:22 am
Besides eating, Garrosh also takes the opportunity to bag some of the longer lasting food for the road, rations don't grow on trees after all.

That’s a good idea, Geoffrey thinks watching Garros, and loads his pouch with some food as well. I hope Grog makes up his mind soon; the battle will be over if we stay here much longer.
Aug 28, 2024 8:27 pm
Mighty Grog has decided it is time to go now. Noise outside is still present but much lower. "Stay close and don't speak to anyone. I will guide us out of the camp fast."

Camp appears to be shutting down. Some tents are already packed away and others are coming down. There still much be a dozen or so bandits still here.
Aug 29, 2024 1:10 am
Never graceful under the most benign of circumstances, Geoffrey tried extra hard not to trip over his own boot laces as he stands up to follow Grog. He whispers Oh Night White Lady, grant your faithful servant the smallest portion of your divine grace this evening.

"Bout time", whispers Garrosh and makes to follow Grog.
Aug 29, 2024 6:45 am

Cosrath pulls his cloak tight and silently follows the others.
Sep 3, 2024 6:01 pm
Grog neatly leads you beyond bandit's camp. He well seems to know the way as there isn't any hesitation. The way he takes isn't a marked path at all. He just seems to know where he is going. And at one point you had to even edge around steep drop. But that wasn't far, but you're sure bandit and orc probably wouldn't have come this way. He must be showing you his secret way.

While nodding to Garrosh's words, Davros chooses to stay silent. And for that there a two reasons - one, this debate is interesting to see, and two, the bunch are already making a lot of noise to begin with... Though it would be interesting if he could persuade his orcish fried to eves drop a little, but the half elf is more afraid of getting the 'axe to the forehead' reaction from him. The popular one between those raised in nomad tribes.

If Davros lets, then assume the following, otherwise Geoffrey does nothing.
Geoffrey bows his head and prays: Oh great Moonmaiden, look down kindly on your servant and grant your divine guidance to our woodsman as he goes to battle the forces of darkeness and evil. Geoffrey's hands glow silver very dimly as he places his hands on Davros's head in benediction.

The half elf will raise his brow at the praying priest, but having heard that these so called "blessings" actually tend to work, he will allow it.
OOC:
Yes, if it's a good place to hide. Honestly the map is a bit hard to interpret, I mean where's up and where's down? Are those slopes or just rocks?

And... He got jinxed by the god. XD

Stealth + guidance - (1d20+3+1d4)

(1) + (3) + 3 = 7

Cave Entrance.
[ +- ] Situation
Davros (make believe) band saunters across the opening expecting roses from observers. He knocks all that disrupting vegetation away so he can be there highlighted. Gotta love a '1'.

He is not noticed but does a poor job of hiding himself.

Garrosh just looks on, not really caring if their guide dies, but grabs his axes and readies to throw just in case. Besides he cant exactly go forward himself, 7 feet of half orc is not really suited for stealth after-all.
Sep 11, 2024 1:29 am
Cosrath nods in response to Davros and slowly moves in the opposite direction towards the rocks. He peeks out from behind to watch the situation, cupping his snout with empty hands in preparation to cast a spell, should the others attack.
OOC:
Going to try to use the rocks as cover and hide at around X9.

Geoffrey realizes he is currently out of normal range for his javelins, but does not want to move forward just yet, being ensconced in many pounds of clinking metal. He moves his shield off his back and wields it in his left hand, and prepares himself to either rush in and throw a javelin or close the distance as best he can, depending on what happens.

How steep is the cave top, would it be difficult to get to-around Q1?

OOC:
Obviously, it is a climb to get there as it is 20' up and probably only a daring person could hang on up there. It is a rock face opening.

Cave Entrance.
[ +- ] Situation
Garrosh? Geoffrey?
Sep 16, 2024 3:15 pm
OOC:
Geoffrey knows he is about as graceful as a drunk cateloblepas on ice skates and so, having readied his weapons, is waiting for others to decide. Based on what happens in the next round, he may choose to charge, to pray, to throw a javelin. But now, his best contribution to the party is not to clank like a rusty kitchen silverware drawer.
Sep 17, 2024 12:28 am
OOC:
Garrosh, much like Geoffrey, is a about as quiet as a bull in a china shop, and therefore does not do much besides waiting for the others to act. He does switch from a hand-axe to javelin, though, realizing he'll get better range with those than a hand axe.

Grog backs off and says "Perhaps should just charge them."
Sep 19, 2024 5:52 am
I won't stop you, Grog, but charging into the unknown is not really a good plan for anything other than getting hurt.
Sep 19, 2024 4:51 pm
"I have to agree with Geoffrey, for all we know there could be 15 orcs in there, which are not odds we would like. Although, your group has met with the orcs before have they not, so you should know how many orcs are in their Warband. If we could see how many orcs are currently fighting your group, that would give us a good estimate of how many are likely in there"
Sep 19, 2024 5:07 pm
Davros nods to their words, getting ready to slowly back up, arrow still drawn.
Sep 19, 2024 8:33 pm
Disappointed Grog says, "I can lead us back."
Sep 20, 2024 6:44 pm
I'll follow where you lead, Grog. Lord Thomas put us in your care.

Davros nods, still skeptical that the lad might run back in and attack the orcs at the last moment.

The bandits are fighting the orcs right now, yes? Any chance we can see/hear how that's going from here?

You can hear it in the distance. To see the fighting is to be in it.

What is the party doing?
Sep 23, 2024 4:07 pm
OOC:
Geoffrey is prepared to follow Grog if Grog or the any of the party rushes, but will not rush on his own, feeling it imprudent given the lack of information and his own lack of martial prowess.
Sep 24, 2024 2:40 am
OOC:

Garrosh is really thinks it's a bad idea, as the last time they tried to go after a group without knowing about the number of enemies, most of the party died. He is however willing to pretend to charge behind grog, with the idea that if there's too many orcs, they should hopefully be too busy killing grog to catch him.

Davros is ready to aid if grog decides to rush into batte.

Grog doesn't appear to be the one to lead off an attack as you have seen he back off from that.
Sep 26, 2024 2:11 am
OOC:
Grog took the initiative to bring us here :).

Seriously, the last time the former members of the group decided to "stand their ground" they were decimated. Granted, they wee TOLD they were facing a dozen people. Nevertheless, I can imagine them having some trepidation about rushing into another battle. Geoffrey is no warrior; he will not be doing any charging.

Is there something you need from us players to move the narrative forward?
Sep 26, 2024 4:08 am
Does the retreat back to camp then?
Sep 26, 2024 4:15 am
Geoffrey follows Grog back to the camp, rather relieved. The last thing we needed was to get involved with a score of orcs, or for that bandit lord to decide to kill us for not listening.
Sep 27, 2024 1:36 pm
Garrosh will also follow Grog back to camp, but will try to keep an eye out, for the fight between the orcs and bandits.
Sep 27, 2024 2:06 pm
As the party makes it back to camp, that concludes this short. Been fun. I will have to make another soon.
