Under raging storm clouds, the vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich stands silhouetted against the ancient walls of Castle Ravenloft. Rumbling thunder pounds the castle spires. The wind's howling increases as he turns his gaze down toward the village of Barovia.

Far below, yet not beyond his keen eyesight, a party of adventurers has just entered his domain. Strahd's face forms the barest hint of a smile as his dark plan unfolds. He knew they were coming, and he knows why they came—all according to his plan.

A lightning flash rips through the darkness, but Strahd is gone. Only the howling of the wind fills the midnight air.

The master of Castle Ravenloft is having guests for dinner. And you are invited.

https://i.imgur.com/hosPdAL.jpegCurse of Strahd is an nightmarish tale of Gothic horror and dark fantasy for D&D 5e. In it, players are swept into the gray, cursed realm of the tyrannical vampire lord Strahd von Zarovich. All is not well in the valley of Barovia; it is under an ancient curse, one which dooms the players wander its broken, sunless wastes for time immemorial—unless they can defeat Strahd, a being who has survived for four hundred years on suffering and stagnation. To survive, the players must brave vampires, werewolves, and worse before they succumb to the curse of Strahd.

Adult Content or Controversial Themes. Curse of Strahd is a macabre tribute to Gothic horror. A non-comprehensive list of potential triggers (some of which are integral to the plot of this module) includes the following:
[ +- ] Curse of Strahd Triggers
Character Restrictions. All classes, races, and backgrounds are allowed. Curse of Strahd portrays a battle between good and evil, assuming the PCs are on the side of good. Anything otherwise may unravel the intended plot of the module, sometimes into darker territory. Evil PCs are allowed, but only if the other players are okay with what it might mean for the story. You should be playing an evil PC because you appreciate darker and more nuanced storytelling, not because you want to kill and rob the other PCs.

Game Duration and Post Frequency. I plan for this to be a long haul campaign, with the option to continue play after the end of the module. Once a week minimum posting rate. Feel free to post more frequently when you can.

Player Experience Requirements. All experience levels are welcome!

How to Apply. Post below: (1) what excites you most about this module, (2) a character concept you may have, (3) the themes you hope to explore with this character (if you know what's coming, keep this part relatively spoiler-free). Anything else you want to share/brag about is welcome!

Welcome Marginalized Groups. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community myself, I can assure you that this game is explicitly friendly to LGBTQ+ and any other minorities or marginalized groups.

You already know I'm ready and willing. Not sure about a character yet, but a darker game certainly appeals. Not "evil PC" levels of dark, because that's something no one wants me to play, but good characters in bad places making tough decisions is sonething I can enjoy. Also, barring something happening... I'm here for the long haul.

1) I have never actually played the 5e Curse of Strahd and have been wanting for some time now.

2) My character concept is a Variant Human that was orphaned as child and raised by a nomadic group of Stone Giants on the edges of Barovia. Giant Foundling Background that is a Path of the Giants Barbarian.

3) I want to explore the darker themes of the game by righting wrongs and all that.

I have a tiefling sorcerer
Arrcher101 sent a note to DragonDweller62
That I think would be very interesting and fun to play through a dark vs light, good vs evil story with. If that doesn’t apeal or the party needs a different class to fill a hole I also have a rouge and monk that would easily fill the setting too. …. I might have a problem with creating characters for fun.. ;)

Also I’m totally in this for the long haul as well.

(1) Curse of Strahd is an iconic module I have never played. I was really hoping my IRL group would move to it next but sadly the group consensus went with another module.

(2) I am really flexible on what I would want to play but here are a few concepts I have and why:

Forge Cleric looking who wants to build the ultimate weapon: Cleric is not a class I have ever played and having a cleric who wants to improve themselves is something I have wanted to do for awhile.
Sunsoul Monk, seeking enlightenment in the darkness: Similar to the cleric concept, I haven't really played a Monk other than a very short lived prior PbP campaign. I know this is considered a weaker subclass which could actually be fun to play in a more horror themed campaign
Arcane Archer aloof and care free finding himself in a serious setting: Would feel like this is a fun character fish-out-of-water character.

(3) I think the Forge Cleric would be the most driven here, trying to actively do something outside of the quest in front of him. The monk would be far more really trying to accomplish the goals at hand and helping others. The Arcane Archer on the other hand, he would be someone more along for the ride that would get more and more invested in the group and the outcomes as time goes on.

All three of these are classes/subclasses I have never played before but would really excite me to play.

I have never played this module further than the start really. I'm a rapid posting and good for long term.

(1) I have always wish to explore the Vampire Situation in 5e. I like the air that Curse of Strahd gives.
(2) I have had other characters, but I think this time I would like to explore a barbarian (foreigner) that has been swept up in this mess.
(3) I believe the barbarian's goal would be to free these cursed lands.

(1) what excites you most about this module:
Not only is this one of the all time classic modules of not only 5e, but of all time! I am excited about the chance to help build a character from a confused and dark beginning, to becoming renewed a powerful character. I have always be interested in discovering how Curse of Strahd is said to twist and turn throughout the adventure, which in turn can twist and turn the characters playing.

(2) Character concepts:
My first and foremost character would be a Monk - Way of Mercy/Rouge, have been waiting for the perfect opportunity to play this character in a dark adventure. He has found himself the lone survivor from a destroyed Monastery. One which has collapsed due to an internal evil (corruption, influencers or such), with his training incomplete and his faith in tatters he begins a journey to not only rediscover himself but possibly his faith.
Due to his predicament and having to survive by himself this character will also take a few classes in Rouge.
I will add, with no shame, that I will play any class type to get a chance to play CoS :). But the above is the character a really want.

(3) This will be an adventure of discovery, surprise and change for my character. Knowing next to nothing about what happens with in the Module itself, I feel that this character could go either way learning more on the healing or more on the harm side of his nature. I have a base to this character and a history of him in my head, his future I feel may develop from his experiences.

As a note: I am very excited at the possibility of a long adventure!

As I posted in the other thread, this is a module I have been dying to play but never got into as it always fills up. I love the gothic horror theme that it is supposed to be. That is all I expect. Gothic horror atmosphere. I don't know any spoilers.

My main character idea is a celestial warlock. Maybe she was a bit of paladin first, depending on starting level. But she was resurrected against her will, and brought from a peaceful afterlife to fight a great evil. This is also the maintheme to explore. What if you get raised from dead while you were at peace?

Alternative is a snobby noble wizardess, who is third born and nothing to inherit. She seeks power with other noble connections. This is a more evil type character.

But if the party needs another class, I am happy to pkay anything that is needed.

Ah, I know it'll be a very busy recruitment thread, but I'd still like to throw my hat in the ring in case I'd fit in the type of game you're creating.

(1) I'm excited about this module since this was one of the first DnD games I tried to join in person. The setting and villain made it easy to start thinking up characters so I thought it would be a fun module to play. Unfortunately, the game never started, but I still would like to play it out one day.

(2) and (3) The character I had originally created was an exiled female dwarf paladin. She still fights for what she believes is right and what got herself banned originally, but secretly hopes that if she can do enough heroic deeds, she may be accepted back home. I thought her power set would be good for the setting and she would have her character tested, to see if she is saving the world because it fits her beliefs or for more selfish reasons. I have character concepts for other roles if it would fit better in a session zero as well: human fighter searching for lost family, dropout gnome wizard searching for more and more arcane knowledge, etc.

I have tried to avoid spoilers so not sure what to expect, but thank you for your consideration and getting us all thinking about these modules!

Levels 1 - 10.
Jul 18, 2024 5:38 am
Right, level 1-10, at least to start out. I want 4-5 players, which sadly means I can't take everyone. In all fairness, I will try to prioritize the players from the interest check, and I will examine each of your applications extremely carefully.

One good thing coming out of such overwhelming support is that I will most likely run more 5e games in the future. If you didn't get into this one, I'll try to get you in the next!

If there’s still room -
Interested in playing a human fighter, ranger or paladin, sworn to protect the Realms from impending undead forces.
Jul 18, 2024 5:28 pm
Smiles. If two barbarians are a bit much a husky foreigner fighter works as well. I was really looking for the combat worthy foreigner look. So, fighter or barbarian works.
Jul 19, 2024 12:07 am
1.) I've played Ravenloft since second edition. The hammer-horror, gothic style lends itself indelibly to written posts in way that makes the most of the dread atmosphere. Creepy spooky stories get all the most delicious words anyway: "lachrymose", "sanguine", "gloam", etc.
2.) I've two concepts for the opportunity; a taciturn and rebellious paladin who loathes to use his supernatural abilities. Hier to a monster hunter family, he is disillusioned with the games strahd plays with human lives and the concept of "heroes". He is missing an arm from the last time strahd toyed with him and his family, resulting in their deaths. A resourceful sort, he has strapped a long delta shield to his elbow stump and should via a leather harness.
Secondly, a sarcastic and pithy harlequin jester in motley and leering mask, embellished with plate greaves and darkened fingers poking out from tarnished gloves. He is a rogue bard, released from the pillory cage he was kept in (the real reason for his imprisonment a mystery known only to him and the DM) by wandering "heroes", he seeks revenge and revelry in equal portion.
3.) the paladin seeks redemption and self-actualization that he is in fact a hero, and that those he travels with are heroes as well, and realization that his monster hunting bloodline did not die for nothing.
The jester is an exploration of balance, dark and light, and being morally grey without being emotionless. They know kings and lords to be fools, and wants to prove this point on Strahd as well. Preferably in his face. With a mallet.

(1) Vampires. Vampires are a classic monster race, however; the dangers posed by such fanged villains are not the true horror. No. Why vampires are truly terrifying is the chance to see if given a chance, does a monster resides within yourself?
(2) On a quick look through past lore, I came across a compelling tale of how Count Strahd had once set his affections on a certain human woman. This woman was no unfettered maiden but none other than the lover of his brother. But whether because his noble birth or another reason, the Count did not accept rejection which lead to his brother's death with the woman being cursed with insanity spending the end of her life in an asylum.

I would like to play the (great) grand daughter of that woman and the brother of Count Strahd

Apologies for the wait. After much consideration, I have decided to welcome these players to the game: @MaJunior, @Mathfuric, @Shorty, @Quilltid, and @CherokeeWind. Each of them will be receiving an invitation shortly. Thank you to everyone who applied; even if you didn't get in, I will be creating a waitlist in case anyone drops out, and I will be hosting more 5e games in the future.

This game is back open with one vacancy after a player became inactive. The four remaining PCs are still in Death House (a haunted house which is the introductory dungeon), so the new PC will be able to catch up quickly with the rest of the party. Pinging the following applicants who are on the waitlist: @Arrcher101, @valdattaMadun, @SenorDeebs. I have also received a PM application from @alhoon.

These applicants will get priority, but other applications are always welcome.

P.S.
SenorDeebs: I waitlisted you because I enjoy your usual character writing, but I would need a formal application from you.
alhoon: I got your PM, but I would need a formal application from you as well.

Hello. I am very new to this forum. Is me saying the following a formal application, or do I need anything else?
_______________________________________
Application:

I would love to share this story with you and the party!
You say everyone is welcome in your table, so here it is: I am not a Native English Speaker, but I am proficient in English, especially written form. I do not live in USA, I am several hours ahead from USA time (I am GMT+2). I am also on the slightly older side (I assume) for players of 5e so I may not be caught up with all the Gen-Z language quirks. However, I have been playing in English forums and games for decades without any issue at all, and my English are good enough that many people assume I am a native English Speaker.

(1) what excites you most about this module,
Long time Ravenloft player, in fact, playing Ravenloft on and off since 1998. I have read bits and pieces from Curse of Strahd but I found the adventure to be so good that I stopped reading it early on, because I want to enjoy it as a player.

(2) a character concept you may have,
I would be interested in playing a Dwarf Cleric, Neutral Good to Chaotic Good. A bit unconventional, a bit controversial, but someone that is fundamentally good - even with some flaws.

(3) the themes you hope to explore with this character (if you know what's coming, keep this part relatively spoiler-free). Anything else you want to share/brag about is welcome!
I would love to explore how a generally good and moral character would behave in situations where the right thing to do may not be the good thing to do. I would also simply want to explore and enjoy some Gothic horror elements, like "sins of the father", a world where good/evil are absolute where my character sees shades of gray etc.

I can reconsider your application, but I'm going to be even more selective than last time since there's only one spot. I will leave the spot open for a week (from the time of my post above, Sep 18 EST) so that the party doesn't spend too long with a vacancy. If it helps, I'm judging each application by the depth and quality of writing, but this time I will consider character concepts that mesh well with the existing party mechanically and narratively.
Sep 20, 2024 12:34 pm
I would like to throw my hat to this one!

(1) what excites you most about this module

It's not only an iconic classic who deserves to be played and enjoyed but it let you explore themes that aren't normally looked at by other settings in DnD. The blurred lines between light and dark, between evil and good cast long shadows that are worthy an exciting to dig into and gives both players and DM a lot of opportunities to develop the characters and the history.

(2)/(3) a character concept you may have / the themes you hope to explore with this character

At this point, when you already have a party playing and going, but not knowing who had to quit... I am not sure which concept would be better suited for the party, and I am open to play anything it's more needed/suitable for the current party, but here are a couple of ideas:

Beware, possible triggers inside the spoilers.

Bit late but here's mine application.

1. Strahd is one of the only 3 modern DnD modules I hear good things about and Ravenloft demiplane seems interesting.

2. A middle aged cleric who never had the faith required for anything other than basic blessings and has begun to doubt whether he can really make a difference in the world

3. To show that he can indeed change at least some lifes for the better

A bit late, but I have decided to welcome @Arrcher101 to the game. Invite coming soon, but if for any reason you can't accept then the spot will remain open. Everyone who applied so far has now been added to the waitlist; since the game isn't first-come-first-served anyway, you will be considered for open spots equally. I apologize for any confusion the old system may have caused.

Hello everyone, two of our players have gone missing for some time which means that this game is back open for applications. I will personally invite/PM everyone who has been on the waiting list as well as leave this thread open for a week or two, depending on engagement. The party is currently escaping the Death House, the first dungeon of the module. New players will be introduced once the party escapes and enters the realm of Barovia proper. Additionally, I will be increasing the posting rate of this game from 1/week to 3/week, so keep this in mind when deciding to join.

As a reminder, I want to be clear about why and how I’m choosing which players to accept. I am looking for depth and quality of writing, especially if a character concept surprises me or subverts my expectations.

As much as I have run this adventure (first in AD&D 1e as I6 Ravenloft, then in 2e as House of Strahd, then Expedition to Castle Ravenloft in 3.5), I have never experienced it from a player's perspective. I have run it in various incarnations at least two dozen times, but I have never been through it as a player. For that reason, I am tempted to apply, even though it is 5e.
Oct 25, 2025 12:20 am
I am very much interested! As people have already said, CoS seems to be pretty highly praised, and I'm at the very least interested in the atmosphere of the adventure. Having looked a bit of the game y'all have run so far I'm also a fan of your DMing style!

Character-wise I'm flexible depending on what would fit the party/what you have in mind the best. The first idea that I feel attached to is a cleric. I don't know overly much about the setting, but Ezra seems like an interesting deity. My character would see their domain as a power for the good of the people of Ravenloft, but I like that her true nature is obscure. Leaves a lot of room for varied reactions to their faith (and for self-doubt...) I would likely go with the twilight domain.

I don't know much about the specifics, but given the gothic-horror aesthetic I think hope against hopeless circumstances is something that would fit my concept. I wouldn't want to play a happy-go-lucky character, necessarily, but someone who desperately wants to do some good in a place utterly devoid of it.

If you're interested enough that you'd like me to expand further, let me know! Again, you seem to be running a good game so I'd be more than happy to put in a bit of work to get my foot in the door.

- Tiefling Monk/Rouge

If Mathfuric is involved, I suppose I will apply. I would be most interested in playing a class I seldom play: a wizard. Shaelyn is a Wizard of the Arcane Tradition of Transmutation. She is a native Barovian (if that is acceptable) whose brother went on an expedition to Castle Ravenloft and never returned. She would be seeking to find out what happened to her brother.

(1) What excites me most? The prospect of experiencing this adventure from the other side of the screen. If it makes a difference, I have not read or run the 5e adventure, though I am very familiar with previous incarnations, and I am very good at separating character knowledge and player knowledge.

(2) As stated above, Shaelyn is a Transmuter seeking to learn the fate of her brother.

(3) Shaelyn became an adventurer to find out her brother's fate. While money and magic are good means to an end, her main focus is finding or avenging her brother.

In reference to my earlier post, I remain interested, specifically as a half-elven ranger.

I’d like playing in this module in order to explore the world of Ravenloft, one of my long-held DND interests ever since I was a kid playing ADnD. I find it a challenge, coming up with characters from Forgotten Realms, who now function completely outside of the Forgotten Realms. Who he is and how he got there, and what he looks forward to - so, this part is fun, for me.

https://i.imgur.com/rGovQdj.pngConceptually, my character, Tram, is an outlander trained to fight against undead foes. Zombies from Ravenloft destroyed his homeland. He managed to follow them back through the mists, has tracked them thusly, and now seeks his revenge.

I look forward to exploring how far Tram will go, in order to bring low his favored enemy. I’d also like to see him eventually establish a name for himself, perhaps have a land to warden, and become an important adventurer in a strange land.

Cheers everyone. :)

Hey hello!! In case this is still open:

1. The balance of light and darkness. Theres something very inspiring to me about the story of Barovia - how even though life in it is so bleak and dismal, there's still people pushing to bring some parts of it to light. People will always fight for good, even with everything against them! (Also the possible corruption. . . Brrrr)

2. Mirabelle Whitlocke: Once an apprentice to a great wizard, upon his death this Elven disguised Changeling took his book and set out to obtain more and more knowledge - ultimately using it to help people, when her master before would hoard the information for himself.

3. How Knowledge is withheld from the masses - weither good or bad, keeping what you view as your worst parts from those around you, how knowledge can corrupt you, the draw of power

No matter if I'm chosen or not, I hope you have a lovely game!!

I've always wanted to play Curse of Strahd, so if this is still open I'd like to throw my hat into the ring as well.

The character I think I will propose is Maryah, my Tiefling Divine Soul Sorcerer. A born healer and gentle soul, she grew up an orphan on the streets of Waterdeep (or whatever major city is convenient) and only discovered her latent magical talent after she spent the absolute last of her pitiful savings healing a bird with a broken wing, an act that was recognized by Ilmater (or another dirty of mercy). Still grappling with her new sorcerous powers, the meaning of said powers, some internalized anti-Tiefling prejudice and an abysmally low self esteem, she's out on her own with little more than the clothes on her back, a songbird with a freshly healed wing, the blessing of a god of mercy, and the desire to heal whatever she can.

Mechanically she trends towards healing and buffing rather than damaging, but she'll still have access to some blasting.

@WhtKnt: That’s so cool, I definitely prefer 1e and 2e these days, and I’d love to run the original Ravenloft or Pharaoh one day. Curse of Strahd has been on my bucket list for a long time; I just love the deep, expansive lore from over forty years of lore.

Great application, I love the idea of a native Barovian PC. Now that the party is deeper in, I want to open up the opportunity to play natives of Barovia, the other Domains of Dread, and even other Material Planes. And I must say that a good revenge quest is always fun for the DM to use for emotional twists and turns, so I’d love to workshop that with you.

@Snomin: First of all, thank you! I appreciate the kind words. I definitely want to get deeper into Ravenloft lore. As WhiteDwarf said above, I love seeing characters from other settings become hopelessly lost in Ravenloft fish-out-of-water style. Now that the party is deeper into Ravenloft, I want to expand on the lore slowly and subtly. If you could expand a little more on your application, than would be great! It looks like the game is getting full really quickly, but I’d love to have you on the waiting list.

@WhiteDwarf: Another great application. I resonate with the themes of being a fish out of water and the constant struggle against undead and the supernatural. And thinking about the late game and your overall character arc is always fun and something I look for in players.

@EctoplasmicSoda: Love the concept, a changeling would be fun in this game. Knowledge as power is a big theme across Ravenloft's history. In the original, the villagers thought Strahd was the 12th of his line instead of the same immortal vampire that started ruling over them ~400 years ago. Many of the peasants in 5e are still kept in darkness and confusion, and a huge part of the emotional core of the module is rescuing them.

@roughhouse_mafia: Great concept. Curse of Strahd is a very challenging module, and already the current party is taking a beating. They could use all the healing they can get.

Thank you all for the great applications so far! I am also keeping in touch with the players I invited. I will keep this thread open until Friday, October 31st (Halloween) and then decide whom to accept. Feel free to keep applying and asking questions, because even if I can't fit you in I can add you to the waitlist!

1) I have, very briefly played this module and would like to get past the first dungeon. I have always loved Ravenloft and how dark it is with small bits of light. It looks like your players have just gotten past the first dungeon so I need not worry about replaying any parts or the game. I would be very excited to actually get further.

2) So originally, I played as a true neutral priestess of Shar but Shadowheart exists, so my idea now is a priestess of Hela or the Raven Queen and uses the Grave domain. Basically, she is utterly devoted to death and the idea of the end and that everything that is alive will someday die. The sort of person who isn't exactly 'good' until the undead start showing up and then she's adamant about putting them back in their graves.

3) Themes on life and death of course on someone so focused with death that she's forgotten to actually live. Also themes on a stoic and nearly unfeeling person who is normally used to only dealing with dead bodies actually having to interact with living breathing people.

"With each new child's birth we die in our hearts, truth black we know, death always returns."

As promised, I am closing the recruitment thread this week. I actually have three spots available, so I have settled on inviting @SenorDeebs, @WhiteDwarf, and @WhtKnt to my game. Everyone else who applied has been added to the waitlist, and I will send invites to the new players within the week. Thank you all for applying and happy gaming!

@DragonDweller62 - Thanks for the kind invite! Should we go ahead and roll characters in the Character Creation thread, or would you rather us wait for your queue to do that? Thanks again!
Hope everyone’s well today. :)
