3. Wyrm's Crossing

A few days’ travel north from the Friendly Arm Inn reveals the city of Baldur’s Gate on the horizon. For those who have never visited such a large center of civilization, it seems impossibly large even from this distance.

First, though, to enter the city, the party must navigate Wyrm’s Crossing. The massive bridge crosses the River Chionthar: first to an island fortress of the Flaming Fist, and then to the river’s far side. Both lengths of the bridge are choked with numerous houses and shops; it’s practically a city unto itself!
https://i.pinimg.com/736x/9a/36/fe/9a36fe888fd85d47043289154bc8a87b.jpg
And so at mid-morning the party steps onto the cobblestone ‘street’ of Wyrm’s Crossing. The place is a-bustle with crowds of folks moving on and off the bridge, weaving between shops, and drowning out most sounds with their chatter. Hawkers and peddlers shout their wares and prices from mere feet away. The smell of the place is just as present as the people. Truly, civilization at its finest.

As they make their way along the bridge’s first span, something grabs the party’s attention…
Jan 25, 2024 4:06 am
Two men, fishers by the look of them, accost a young girl. Even over the din of the crowd the group can hear the threats the two men are shouting:

"I’ll toss you straight off the Crossing, witch!"

"But not before we’ve taken our losses out of your sorry hide!"

They each grab one of the girl’s arms and start hoisting her towards an open section of railing. No one else in the crowd seems to care, and continue on their way as though blind to the scene. For her own part, the girl seems to have gone limp, but the fear in her eyes proves she's all too aware of what's happening.

Stella gapes in awe and the grand scale of the bridge and buildings. "Incredible! And rather impractical..." she says, noting the buildings build into the structure of the bridge that looked like they could fall off at any moment.

...

When the commotion starts, Stella's eyes widen in shock and she follows the others. Did the girl use magic to cheat in some kind of gambling? Where they about to murder her in broad daylight?! Why did nobody else care? She needed more information.

"What did she do?" she asks the men calmly when she catches up.

The two men glare down at little Ida, ready to tell her to get lost, when Dieter shows up. The tall, strong young man - obviously an experienced warrior, perhaps even a killer - makes them rethink that idea. Aiwe's presence only strengthens the effect.

One of them lets go of the girl. The other man's face reddens with frustration.

"What did she do?" Stella asks the men calmly when she catches up.
The red-faced man angrily holds up three fingers. "Three days we set out on our fishing ships, and each time we were nearly scuttled! Storms outta nowhere." The girl squirms and he pulls on her arm. "This one did it! She's a sea witch, evil to the bone!"

"Ow!" the girl exclaims when her arm gets pulled. "Stop hurting me!"

Coldy Ida asks "What about a young girl makes you think that she's the cause of all your woes?"
Jan 25, 2024 10:48 pm
The other man holds his hands up defensively. "Don't be deceived by her appearance! She's killed, and will again!" He shakes his head. "And our families starve until we bring home fish to eat."

The girl looks back at the party. Her sea-green eyes show a flicker of desperate hope. "These men are liars! Help me!"

"Is this how Justice is done in this part of the world?" Aiwë asks, brow furrowed. "No trials? No judges? Can you prove your innocence to murdering a child better than you can prove her guilt?"

"Answer the question." Dieter barks.

Jan 26, 2024 12:43 am
"But she's not a child!" the red-faced man insists. "Not with the things she can do. Children don't conjure storms and murder fishermen!"

Under the party's pressure he finally relents and releases the girl, but there's still plenty of anger in his eyes. "Bah! She's got you under her sway, no doubt. Well, there's nothing more we can do here then."

He turns to the other man. "Come on, Telman."
Jan 26, 2024 12:49 am
Telman. Stella takes note of the name in her tome.

Jan 29, 2024 6:29 pm
"No, I mean—Ugh!" Stella gives an exasperated glare as the men ignore her and leave.

She had tried to be reasonable and objective, and not assume, but they left her with hardly any choice. If she had the blood of storm sorcery or a sea hag or something, that would mean nothing if the girl was never present or didn't have any stakes in their success or failure. Maybe the girl was dangerous; maybe she was actually malicious. But if the men didn't want to properly defend themselves, it sounded more likely that the men were simply prejudice and wanted someone to place the blame on. Maybe getting thrown off would have just been a mild inconvenience for the girl. Given the girl's defeated reaction, it seemed she was used to this kind of abuse?

Stella shakes her head, confused. In any case, nobody should be getting dragged around and thrown off bridges like this.

Dieter examines the little girl, he can’t tell if this one is a threat or not. It’s not as easy as the flaming fist boy. he had the appropriate muscle density in his shoulders and legs, most definitely a knife (though dieter had never seen it) but most importantly the correct mentors.

Where is the knife? dieter thought. Maybe she’s a pick pocket and we are already in the trap.

Dieter does have the realization that she could be something far worse. She could just be a little girl who was very scared and alone.

The girl seems innocent enough, but there's something about her that makes Dieter's hair stand on edge. Whether or not she's responsible for the deaths those men accused her of, there's more to her than meets the eye.

But she can't be dangerous at the moment. Can she?
Quote:
Looking at the girl she smiles warmly "And where is home for you little one?"
The girl rubs her eyes with the back of her hand. "Down there." She points off the rail, back towards the shore the party entered the bridge from. "It's down by the water. Mama and I lived there before..." She swallows. "That's where I want to go."

Aiwë follows Dieter's eyes to the girl. She hums a little song as she kneels to be at eye level. "First let's make sure you're okay. Are you hurt anywhere?" As she asks her question, she focuses on the sound going in, into her ears and her mind, and listens to what echoes back out.

Aiwë casts Detect Thoughts, focusing on surface thoughts for now.
Feb 1, 2024 3:03 am
Mama! Mama... I want you back. Please, please... Accompanying the girl's thoughts is a heavy wave of sorrow, and the image of a woman's face, too pale and still.
Feb 1, 2024 3:06 am
"What happened to your Mama, baby girl?" Aiwë asks gently.
Feb 1, 2024 3:09 am
"Those men... they..." The girl can't finish her sentence, but in her mind Aiwe sees the woman's injuries. Those men murdered the girl's mother.

Ida can see the rest of the party already has a handle on tracking down those vile bandits and hugs the young girl "You are safe now. Why don't you show me where you and your mother live... I can help her rest comfortably"

Up to Ida if she and the girl are still here when Dieter returns with the fishermen.
Dieter easily picks the two men out of the mass of people. Those men and women who notice the young man's fierce determination quickly step out of his way, and soon he returns to the party with the two fishermen tight in his grip.

The commotion draws the attention of a Flaming Fist guard, who stomps up to the group in shining chainmail. "What's going on here? I'll have no fighting on Wyrm's Crossing!"

The Flaming Fist guard frowns down at the men. "Is this true?" He waves over several more guards. "We'll take them from here, and we'll get to the bottom of this. Where's the girl?"

His eyes fall on Ida and the young girl, and his expression softens with pity. "By Torm..." He looks at the rest of the party and speaks in a low voice. "She needs to come in as well, but I don't want to scare her; she's been through enough. You've been friendly faces to her, haven't you? Will you bring her to Wyrm's Rock?" He points to the imposing fortress that makes up the middle length of Wyrm's Crossing. "We can make arrangements there for what's to be done with her."
Feb 12, 2024 6:52 am
"Of course." Aiwë nods. "We're heading that way anyway. Actually, could you give me directions to a chapter of Torm in the city? Im assuming there is one?"
Feb 13, 2024 7:58 pm
The guard's polished helmet catches the light as he nods. "Of course! The Temple District is on the Gate's northwest side. You'll find the Temple of Torm there easily, along with places of worship for near any goodly deity."

Another guard approaches the first and hands him a piece of parchment. "You mean...?" The guard's eyes widen as he scans the writ, and then he gives the party another studied look. "You wouldn't happen to be the group Officer Vai sent after the bandits, would you?" He nods in confirmation to himself. "Scar wants to see you. He's second only to Duke Eltan in command of the Flaming Fist, and a good man besides. You'll find him in Wyrm's Rock, which is just as well as you'll be heading there soon regardless."

His eyes flick to the girl again, then he straightens up and takes command of the two murderous fishermen. "I can see why Vai put her trust in you. Tymora favor you for what you're doing for the girl. Farewell!"

Ida stands her hight not much higher then the young girl. She looks at the child "We will not leave you until this matter is settled." She reaches out her hand and gestured for the girl to take it. looking at the flaming fists she says "I will be accompanying this young maiden until it is clear she will be well taken after. She has already gone through more then any child should." Ida glances over at dieter the girl reminded her of when she had first sat with the boy. Lost and afraid. Tulfgar had been that hand of strength and kindness to the young boy while she had been cold and not understanding of her cousin’s decision. She wanted to atone for her actions past and resolved to be that warm hand to this girl now. She now remembered the horrors the world offered as she once again began to venture out into it.

As the group heads to Wyrm's Rock, Stella distracts herself by furiously takes notes on peoples and places of note, eye-stars teal with a mix of curiosity and caution.
Feb 15, 2024 4:57 pm
The girl takes Ida's hand. She's quiet, but from the way she squeezes the cleric's hand it's clear she doesn't mean to let go anytime soon.

The trip to Wyrm's Rock would only take a few minutes, but with the press of the crowds it's nearly a half hour before the party arrives at the towering edifice bisecting the massive bridge. It truly is a fortress! The drawbridge is down, as no large ships are passing through at the moment, and a score of Flaming Fist in gleaming armor watch the crowds pass by.

Once within the Rock itself, a guard seated in a booth looks at the group expectantly. "Commander Scar is upstairs in his office. You'd best not keep him waiting; he's a busy man."
Feb 15, 2024 5:09 pm
After a few minutes moving through the impressive edifice, the group arrives at Scar's office.

The man, second in command of the Flaming Fist, is built like a grizzled old bear. He stands to greet the party, extending his hand respectfully to each member. "Greetings, friends. Or, at least I hope that we may be friends. Call me Scar."

Once introductions are made, Scar moves back behind his desk and picks up a sheaf of papers. "You've been busy. From what I understand, you put an end to the plot tainting iron ore in the Nashkel mine, took out an entire camp of bandits and slew their leader, and located and destroyed a secret mine in the Cloakwood. All while dodging and dealing with assassins after your own heads."

He gestures for the group to sit in comfortable chairs lining the room, then settles down into his own seat. For all his brutish appearance, the man's eyes are sharp and discerning. "My first question is this: Why have you been looking into these matters? Half of you aren't even from this region. Why come all this way to look into the Iron Crisis?"
Feb 15, 2024 5:16 pm
Aiwë doesn't sit, and instead leans casually on the back of Stella's chair. She seems more comfortable that way.

"We came to sight-see, and have a break from the snow. We were to spend a few weeks in Candlekeep, but were chased out by assassins. We need to figure out why we've been targeted, by whom, for what purpose? So far it looks like Rieltar Anchev, on behalf of a Bhaalist cult, in relation to whatever it is they are after with this Iron Crisis." Aiwë shrugs. "And... it's hard not to want to help."

She watches him carefully to see how he takes the news. Is he in on this, or not?

Stella lets Aiwë explain, occasionally glancing up and scratching some notes. Was that rude? She looks to Aldous. He likely knew the right way to act in these situations. She tries to mimic his posture.

She narrows her eyes when Scar mentions the secret mine. Former slaves and Iron Throne workers fled and could have made it to the Gate, but how did word about their group, specifically, reach the Flaming Fists? If they had a description, that meant the assassins certainly would too...Might as well ask and find out, she supposed.

"Secret mine?"

Ida holds tightly to the small hand in hers and helps ward off the throng as she moves through the crowd. While they have some time Ida asks the girl her name and asks about some of her favourite things like her favourite animal, and favourite colour.

When they do finally make it to the office Ida situates herself on one of the side walls of the room and helps the girl sit. Ida still holds her hand and takes a seat next to her. She pulls out a piece of parchment and and quill with her free hand and passes it to the young girl and asks if she likes to draw or if she would like to learn a little bit if writing.

Scar nods once in respect and affirmation. "Officer Vai recounted as much in her report. She was wise to seek your help." He frowns down at his papers. "Though she said nothing about a cult of the Lord of Murder." His penetrating gaze rises to the party. "You're sure about Anchev being a cultist of Bhaal?"
Quote:
"Secret mine?"
Scar taps the papers on his desk with two fingers. "Not so secret anymore, thanks to you. To think they've had access to an iron mine for years..." His frown makes his scars look deeper. "We'll make sure the Iron Throne pays for what it's done. Sooner rather than later, if we can continue to count on your group for help."
OOC:
So I forgot to ask about you guys reporting to anyone after finishing up the mine, and I ended up assuming you'd sent word to Officer Vai, who of course would have informed her superiors. If that's not true, that you guys wouldn't have done that, we can make something else work. So just me saying that if Scar seems to have suspicious knowledge, that's my bad! Of course, Stella can't be blamed at all for being wary.

Feb 22, 2024 10:21 pm
Scar tilts his head to the side slightly as he eyes Koveras. "The young Anchev himself. I didn't think you'd ever be one to side against your father."
Feb 22, 2024 10:22 pm
Koveras stiffens further. "Rieltar is not my father. Sir."
Feb 22, 2024 10:26 pm

He looks to Aldous. "Your father is most relieved to hear you're not dead, Lord Aldous. No doubt you'll pay a visit to Duke Entar and assure him of your safe return."
Feb 22, 2024 10:29 pm
Aldous runs a hand through his hair, which has grown a bit longer in the months since he left home. "Of course! We'll likely put up in the Silvershield estate, at least until all this business with the Iron Throne is settled."

The young noble leans over to Stella. "At least, I assume you all would prefer to be my guests than pay for a tavern..."
Feb 22, 2024 10:31 pm
Meanwhile, the young girl quietly asks Ida to learn some writing. "I don't know how to write my name."
Feb 23, 2024 6:06 am

Araklusta says:
"I don't know how to write my name."
Ida smiles warmly down at the girl, in a low voice she responds "I can teach it to you no problem it's a very good skill to know how your name is spelled." Ida listens in to most of the conversation happening with the flaming fists and the rest of the party but ensures she gives the time and attention to the young girl as she teaches the her how to hold a quill and practice the letters needed to write her own name.
Feb 25, 2024 9:35 pm
Scar nods in thanks to Aiwe's pledge of support. "News of your party's efforts have reached the city, but I doubt anyone outside the Flaming Fist would recognize you by sight, or even by name; tales and rumors change with every telling, as you're aware. We can use this to our advantage."

He rotates a large map of Baldur's Gate around on his desk to face the group, then points at a large office building marked as The Seven Suns. "A friend of mine, Jhasso, is the head of this trading coster, and one of our most important contacts among the merchant guilds. He's sent word that there's some sort of trouble brewing there, possibly caused by the Iron Throne."

Scar taps the map. "He asked discretion, so I can't send any of my men in uniform. That's where you come in. Find out what's going on in the Seven Suns, and report back to me." His seemingly-customary scowl returns. "With any luck, you'll learn something we can use against the Iron Throne."

Stella grimaces, unconvinced. "Assassins haven't had any trouble spotting us by vague descriptions alone. But I suppose Baulder's Gate might be large enough to make that more difficult? Maybe I just need to dye my hair or something...it's fairly distinct," she says, running a hand through it. She turns to Aldous, distracted for a moment. "What do you think? Brown? Ooh, or blue! No, wait, that's too distinctive as well...probably just black like Mama..." She glances up at his red hair. "Hmm...I suppose traveling with a Silvershield might make us stand out a bit as well..."

Stella nods, opening her tome and flipping to the pages where she had sketched part of the map in the mine's operations room. "From the looks and sounds of it, it might be entirely compromised..." She flips, she freezes, stopping at the grinning skull in blood, then quickly closes it. "...How many major contacts and merchant guilds would you guess the Throne might be interested in?" she asks, thinking of the four stars in her vision, one becoming corrupted. It was a long shot, but she had to at least ask.

Scar blinks several times. "This is your first visit to the Gate, isn't it? It's no frontier town with only one or several inns for assassins to scout out. It may not be as fancy as Waterdeep or Silverymoon, but it rivals them in size. Even knowing you're here, it's unlikely assassins will be able to find you easily." He shrugs. "Perhaps your anonymity won't last beyond this investigation of the Seven Suns. But for the time being we might as well make use of it."

Scar chuckles. "Dozens? A score or more? I suspect their ambition knows no bounds, and they'll have their greedy fingers in every pie they can reach."

The Flaming Fist officer puts both hands on his desk and looks each member of the group in the eyes. "The Iron Throne is hardly the first organization of evil intent to threaten the Gate and its people, but the scope of this plot... We are going to need incontrovertible proof to face them on the scale they merit. And hopefully your investigation of the Seven Suns will be the beginning of that."

Scar rolls his shoulders, stretching muscles still firm despite his apparent age. "Have you any other questions?"
