Chapter 1 - Knightfall

May 26, 2023 3:33 am
The crime scene was horrific, in ways none of the cops had seen before. It wasn't the first dead little girl most of them had seen... but it was the first dead little girl that had perfectly cut strips of flesh missing and was hanging by her ankles.

The crime scene tape crisscrossed both ends of the alleyway, the brick walls lighting up red and blue in succession as most of the officers tried to avoid looking at the body. Patrolman Rodgers wiped his mouth as he walked away from a dumpster half way up the alley, his vomit steaming in the cool night air. It had been all he could do to move away from the crime scene, hoping not to contaminate it. O'Malley stood by the tape at one end of the alley, simply refusing to look behind him as if by not looking at the crime it wasn't there anymore. Smith stood there stone-faced and clenched the grip of his revolver so tightly his knuckles were white. Berkowitz just stood there, face turned to the overcast night sky with his eyes closed as he cried and prayed.

They were waiting for the detectives to arrive, so they could get the hell out of there and drink the image away. None of them wanted to drink themselves into a stupor at 4:30 in the morning, but it was nights like this that made them question their life choices. Above them, a few crows perched on the rail to the fire escape, cawing softly as they look down on the scene below.

Vlax pauses and make sure to stop and chat with each of the first responders, seeing the anguish in their face. This wasn't his first encounter with horror, although this particular seen might be unique. What was most disconcerting at the moment was the look on the faces of his comrades. He took a few seconds, making sure to reach up and touch them on the shoulder, his training coming in and knowing that physical contact was important when delivering a psychologically influenced message. He reminds each of them that they've done a great job this evening, and while they would need to remain a while longer to keep things secure, they should remind themselves that this is why they chose this life. They want to make sure that these kind of things don't happen very often, and while there's no way to stop horror forever, they can certainly work together to protect the next family who would be victim.

Once he feels confident that he has supported that crew, remembering back to the days when he was just a beat cop, Vlax approaches the edge of the scene and prepares to study it with the tenacious fervor of someone who now must deliver on the sermon he just gave to the other cops. He would leave no stone unturned, and make absolutely sure that if the perpetrator of such a horrendous crime could be found, that they don't muck it up. As his training dictates, he starts at the furthest edge, slowly working his way inward, searching for evidence so that it can be properly cataloged and collected. Only after this is done can he take a step back and study the wider picture.

Ooc: Sorry, I didn't get a notification on this one, because it's a new thread I suppose which I just subscribed to. In any case if there is a special convention that I should be using, let me know. If there isn't one then I tend to just write in there to style like you would if you were reading a novel.

Ps: If possible, Vlax will utilize his skill set involved in investigations. I don't know if a roll is needed, if we're just working through the initial story. If one is, you might better work me through the methodology of how to make this roll thing work... Or point me to some directions if it's the same in every game on this website, then I'm sure there's somewhere I can read up on it.

PSS: spectacular first post by the way. I don't know if you're copying and pasting this from somewhere, or if you are truly the narrative genius that this writing in tones. I can totally feel myself drawn to the scene. Takes a true PbP GM with a gift of literary writing, not to mention the creative mind, to pull this off. Admit, I am not easily impressed having been a DM for long as I have but this is a spectacular start.

Ooc: trying to make a fake test roll

OOC:
I'm planning to do the early stuff a little more narratively driven, but I figure this is a good chance to run some rolls so you get a feel for it before it becomes more important.

Mechanics:
1. Click the "Add" button.
2. Give a Reason for the roll. (Some people spell out the dice pool, some people keep it vague. As long as I know what you're rolling I'm good.
3. Type in your dice pool. ("4d10" is simple, and is all we should need for 99% of the game). It can get more complex, but if we ever need any of that I'll fill you in.
- Note that you have to calculate your own dice pool though.
4. Click the little box that says "Reroll Aces." That way, you automatically reroll 10s.

Crime Scene Investigation is: Wits + Investigation + Specialties/Gear +/- situational modifiers.

In the case of an extended task, every roll represents a period of time spent working at it, and you accumulate successes. The goal is to reach a certain number within time.

For this... each roll is 10 minutes of investigation. I will also say that every roll you make suffers a cumulative -1 penalty. So the first roll (which you did, we will use your test roll) is a straight roll. The next one will be at -1, the third one at -2, and so on.

Also, feel free to make a Presence + Empathy roll at +1 for each cop you spoke with, although one (Smith) will be at -2, so that's a net of -1 to the roll.

As for your first investigation roll, you have a single success. Starting further out, the first thing you notice is the fire escape at this end of the alleyway is partway down.

Rodgers, O'Mally, and Berkowitz all seem to breathe a little easier after your words of encouragement. Berkowitz especially musters a smile, albeit a sad one. "Thanks, Axe. You just... kids man. It always puts you in a bad place when it's kids. An' this ain't normal. Just when you think you've seen it all..." His voice trails off as he looks back down the alleyway. "It's good to see ya, man. Stop by the precinct sometime. Captain would be happy to see you're doin' ok."
May 27, 2023 3:24 pm
Vlax just nods. While he wants his colleagues to feel at ease, he keeps trying to admit himself to the scene, and get a look. He feels fairly confident that the killer is long gone. While it is not in common for them to return to the scene of the crime, or to be part of a group of rubberneckers around the edge of a crime scene, this one doesn't seem to have drawn a crowd. Meanwhile it's so early in the morning, these Is it a real need for urgency, so long is the weather doesn't turn fowl and wash away anything. He presses onward, convinced that the best sources of evidence are probably going to be near that fire escape, and of course on or near the body itself. Lastly there is the source of her hanging, and the location where whatever it is holding her up is tied off. That could be another point of interest.
OOC:
I forget, did we decide he was a cop before the embrace, therefore he's a detective responding to this scene? Or is he a PI now, and he should not asume they're going to Grant access?

Regardless he's going to do his best to try and get a look at what's going on here. Course if he is the assigned detective, or even if he's just a detective not even the one assigned, he's going to do what he can to take a look. It's instinct.

As Vlax tries to observe the fire escape without damaging anything, thanks to a well timed light breeze he's able to spot a bit of torn fabric caught on part of the railing.

Unfortunately, without climbing up the ladder or going through the second story apartment there isn't a way to collect it... but it's known.
OOC:
Next roll will be at -2.
May 27, 2023 6:56 pm
Vlax calls oit to the closest of the cops who are securing the scene and points to the cloth. "Be sure that doesn't get missed, bit o' fabric up there." He points it out, and when he gets acknowledgement he moves toward where the body hangs.
OOC:
looking for onvious details at first. Best estimate, how old the victim is. How far is she up off the ground? About how tall is she? What she wearing if anything? Is blood pooling underneath her, or is there splatter?

Investigation 6d-2d - (4d10, RA)

May 27, 2023 9:28 pm
As the Detective moves in, his trained eye takes in the scene as a whole. The girl looked to be about 6. She was till wearing her PJ bottoms. She's hanging upside down, her torso at roughly head or upper-torso height on an average adult. Her arms hang free, as do her long brown curls. Her deep brown eyes stare into nothingness. Her face exhibits signs of rigor mortis setting in.

There is virtually no blood to be found. None on her clothing, or her hair, or pooled beneath her on the concrete ground of the alleyway.

She is strung up by the ankles with a length of nylon cord, tied off around the bottom of a different fire escape. Once Vlax gets the mental image of a game animal, he can't get it out of his head.

Potentially the most unnerving thing about the scene is the strips of skin that are missing. A close inspection reveals a fact that would be amazing if it wasn't so morbid... the missing strips betray a level of precision that would make a top surgeon jealous. Each strip appears to be precisely one inch wide the entire length of the cut, which is five inches long. They also denote uniform depth. It is just the upper dermal layer missing. There are eight strips in total, carved out of the front and back of the victim's torso.
May 28, 2023 12:14 am
"What in the..." Vlax catches himself actually muttering under his breath. Looking back at the cops who are surrounding the scene, he calls out, "Do we have a corner on the way, or someone who's got the authority to cut her down?" Not seeing anything else of importance here, his last hope is to find more evidence where the rope is tied. He starts looking for a way to get up to both fire escapes.
May 28, 2023 2:01 am
O'Malley calls back, "Everyone is supposed to be coming, but getting people out of bed this time of day is like pullin' teeth. Shouldn't be long now though." The officer mutters "I hope" under his breath.

There isn't a good way to get on either fire escape from in the alley. Using the escapes themselves may interfere with evidence, and without a ladder your best bet would be to push a dumpster halfway down the alley, which may also muck up the scene.

The crows are still perched up on their railings, looking down on the proceedings. A coldness creeps into the air, the chill that precedes dawn. You can hear more traffic on roads nearby, meaning the city is starting to wake up.

OOC:
There are varying degrees of hidden. If it worked right, you saw the rolls themselves but the reasons should be hidden.
As Vlax was looking up at the fire escape the girl was hanging from, a gunshot rings out. Spinning, he sees Officer Smith holding his revolver, dark brown eyes wide with shock. His bullet passed about three feet behind Vlax, striking the brick wall of an apartment building.

The other officers come running, and all the big man can say is, "He was right behind the detective!"

As Vlax looks over at the point of impact and surveys the trajectory, he notices one thing... in the thin layer of muck and grime there is a single footprint, toes of the flat-bottomed (possibly dress?) shoe pointed towards where the detective's back had been.
May 28, 2023 6:04 pm
Vlax draws his own weapon and begins to back out of the scene, toward the officers who are there to render aid, but his vision trained on the dark alley. You no longer cares whatsoever about preserving evidence, when preserving life takes presidence. It's not that he believes the officer saw anything, but he's not stupid enough to discount the observation. Fear can do a great many things to people, and they can see things, but these men went through the same training he did and they are supposedly readied for situations that required discretionary use of a firearm. Most people never actively discharge their weapon in the line of duty, so no one will ever really know what happens until they face it, and his heart races as he wonders if that's about to be the case here. Head on a swivel, he's backing up and trying to get to the relative of safety of his comrades.
May 28, 2023 6:41 pm
Vlax has no difficulty reaching the other officers. Smith is still holding his service revolver, but none of you seem to see... anything. No signs or sounds of a person. No movement.

The closest you get is the crows fluttering their wings a bit from up above.
May 28, 2023 7:11 pm
Vlax explains the footprint he saw, but he can't besure it wasn't there before. He doesn't recall it, but... considering the darkbess and noir ouster of the alley, he admits an oversight is entirely possible.

"I need to get up on these rooftops, or access the fire escapes from higher up. Which one of you wants yo join me and watch my back. Better yet, which one of you isn't affraid of heights," he tries to add a little levity as he holsters his sidearm.
May 29, 2023 1:18 am
"Yeah... yeah, I'll go with you," Rodgers offers. "Need to get out of this damn alleyway anyway."

The super for the building that has a bit of cloth on the escape answers the intercom, and after a few minutes the elderly man -- clad in his robe and slippers -- opens the front door and lets Detective Gnaf and Patrolman Rodgers into the building. He introduces himself as Jimmy Gagne and tells you he lives in 2A if you need him. He doesn't go up with you, but he tells you to take the elevator to the eigth floor and then the stairs will lead up to the roof access. He adds that the door doesn't lock, so don't worry about getting trapped on the roof.

The two of you have no issues getting onto the roof. The wind bites, and you can smell the salt water. Glancing out, you can see the ferry heading across the water to Bremerton, and a bit further down the barges light the horizon as people are already hard at work.

You cross the roof to the escape, and make your way down. You are able to carefully collect the piece of black fabric and bag it.
OOC:
Make me one more crime scene investigation roll with a -3 penalty to cover deacending the fire escape, if you would please.
May 29, 2023 2:06 am
Vlax encourages Rogers to keep a close watch on their surroundings, if only because of a horrible gut feeling. The discharge of a firearm at a crime scene is no small thing and will result in a separate misconduct inquiry, so he can't get the gravity of the situation out of his head. "I wonder what he saw..." the detective mutters.

The crows hop away from you, but don't fly off. They caw in irritation, but only a bit. They watch you intently, seemingly ready to take off if you move towards them. Nothing seems particularly off about the fire escape. All the windows are shut, and lights are off -- which makes sense considering the time of day.

After collecting the sample, you head back up the fire escape to the roof. The door to the stairwell is, in fact, unlocked.
May 29, 2023 3:01 am
Vlax shrugs and asks his cop companion to come with him to the other fire escape so they can inspect that location as well. It is where the girl is tied, and he warns Rodgers of that fact.
May 29, 2023 3:09 am
"Yeah, I figured," He doesn't sound excited, but makes no move to stop following you.

Jimmy must have returned to his apartment, but you let yourself out of the building without issue.

Making your way up the block to the apartment building in question, you ring the buzzer for the super but get no response.
May 29, 2023 6:15 pm
Vlax slowly draws his weapon and keeps it at a Rodgers and nodding to him to prepare. "Just in case" he says, as takes a really good look at the door and the knob, to make sure there's no blood or evidence on it. If clear, he reaches out to see if the door might already be unlocked or ajar.
May 30, 2023 12:32 am
The door appears clean and free of anything that might be evidence.

It is also locked.
May 30, 2023 12:41 am
"I suppose they could be out? It's late but who knows." Vlax lowers his guard and holsters his sidearm.

"Let's see if we can find our own way up, and failing that maybe get someone else on an upper floor to come to their door and let us out their window onto the fire escape" he suggests.

As you begin to walk away to search for your own point of entry, you hear a call from behind you.

"Officers? Officers!"

A younger man is leaning out of the front door to the apartment building. "Hello, yes, sorry. My intercome needs to be repaired, I can hear but I can't speak through it. Takes me a minute to get down to the door. What can I do for you gentlemen?"

The man before you appears to be in his mid-20s, dressed in black slacks and suspenders with a crisp white button down shirt, top button unbuttoned. A plain black tie with a silver tie pin sits loosely around his neck. He offers a smile as he stands there holding the door open.

At this point, pushing 5:30am.
The moment you lock eyes with him, every hair on the back of your neck stands on end, your stomach twists, and your chest feels tight -- like it's hard to breath.

"No Sir, just fell asleep a while ago. I have a room on the top floor, a hell of a view, I'm single, and I make a decent salary. I'm sure you can figure out the rest," He chuckles a bit. "Eddie Schmidt. I'm the super. How can I help?"
May 30, 2023 7:08 pm
Vlax is unsure what to think. Something about this guy is incredibly unnerving. The detective explains the fact that there has been a murder, and the buildings fire escape was used by the perpetrator, therefore it is part of the crime scene. Without giving out any details, he asks if the man would escort the two of them to the point where that fire escape can be accessed, presumably the roof.
OOC:
Danger sense, is on high alert
May 30, 2023 7:45 pm
His eyes go wide at the mention of a murder. Oh my God! That's terrible! Yes, of course, of course, right this way gentlemen," He holds the door, and lets you both into the building before leading you to the elevator.

He doesn't say anything on the ride up, but when the elevator dings and the door slides open on the 10th floor, he says, "Here we are." He leads you to the stairwell, and goes up a floor and a half to open the door to the roof. "Shall I stay here with you?"
May 30, 2023 10:54 pm
Vlax says, "If the door does not lock, then you had best return to your flat, sir. Will you be home, in case we need answers to questions?"

Upon suitable response, the detective moves to the fire escape and inspects it.
May 30, 2023 11:10 pm
"I'll certainly unlock the handle to the door, Sir," he replies. "Apartment 10E if you need me gentlemen."

With that, he exits the roof and leaves you to your work.

Nothing about the fire escape seems out of the ordinary. You can make your way down to where the cord is tied off. The wrapping is uniform, the knot is small and tight. The knot also has almost no tail, suggesting someone cut it or was an excellent judge of length.
May 30, 2023 11:57 pm
"Rodgers? Ideas? I'm honestly at a loss here. I have no idea what to make of this. I guess it's time for me to go wait for the coroner, so we can lower the body" He turns to go back down, "I suppose we can get the rest of the crew to start canvassing, and see if anyone saw or heard anything." he concludes.
May 31, 2023 12:10 am
"I dunno, but did that guy creep the shit out of you too?" Rodgers asks.

"Yeah, we can start knocking on doors I suppose." He looks down at the girl just hanging there, and shudders before heading back up the fire escape.

You reach the roof, and the door into the stairwell opens without issue.
May 31, 2023 12:56 am
Vlax descends as planned and takes up a position at the edge of the crime scene, so that the other officers can start canvassing.

While there, he starts taking notes and makes a few sketches in his notepad. The scrap of cloth, texture, size. The bizarre rope, how it was wound and cut. The odd super in 10E, and his over-the-top 5am attire. The cuts on the body and their uniform size and dimensions. The bootprint, and its general size and shape. The gunshot!

"Can someone get on the damn radio and see where the coroner is." he yells at no one in particular. "Get us more help out here."
Jun 1, 2023 1:06 am
You find out the coroner was called "a while ago," but they don't have an ETA.

The officers will move off in pairs, although Smith will check if Vlax is comfortable being alone in the alleyway and only head off if Vlax is, in fact, ok.

It takes about another 20 minutes before the coroner arrives. Dr. Williams probably should have retired a decade ago... maybe two. He walks -- trudges, really -- with a cane. His back is stooped, he moves and speaks slowly, he's hard of hearing, his glasses are thick enough you question if he should be allowed to drive, and you're pretty sure he drinks in excess.

That said, his eyes are razor sharp (when he has his glasses). He has also forgotten more about medicine than most doctors will ever know. He also is a bastion of moral character. There are always rumors about officials being on the take -- but not Williams. It's well known he's refused both the Yakuza and the Russians. Even lost his second wife over one of those refusals. Still refused to give in.

"Sorrysorry," he says as he totters up to Vlax. His words are a bit mumbled and a bit slurred... although you can't be sure if he's drunk or just tired. Doesn't smell like a bar at least. He has more hair in his ears than on his head, but he puts his fedora on and wraps his scarf around his neck another time. Looking up at Vlax, he says, "Shall we, Detective?"

And then he's off, tottering into the alleyway toward the corpse.
Jun 1, 2023 1:17 am
Vlax says "Sure, but we may need help from the fire department lowering the body. The killer didn't leave any extra rope to lower her. A fireman can tie more rope to the rope up there, then cut the first one, and lower her that way." He pauses. "... But I suppose we let them sort that out. They know best what they are doing, and how to do it."
Jun 1, 2023 1:27 am
As the two of you move down the alleyway, a firetruck and ambulance pull up within seconds of each other. It's enough to make you wonder if they were waiting for the Doc to arrive?

Regardless, once they verify that they're clear to act, the girl is carefully cut down, moved to a body bag and stretchered out. The cord that was used is collected as evidence, and slowly, systematically, everyone filters back out. With the four patrolmen talking to residents, Vlax finds himself truly alone in the alleyway.

His only companions are the crows, still cawing softly and looking down on everything.

I meant to ask if Vlaxs had a chance to look at the body once it was lowered, and do any visual investigation on scene. If not then of course he will plan to immediately go to the corner's office so he can observe the body during that investigation or after
Vlax makes one final pass through the alley, fairly certain that he won't find anything, knowing that his colleagues are relatively thorough but you can't just leave a place like this without hoping that one very important little clue might jump out.
Jun 2, 2023 2:02 am
There isn't much time to investigate the body once it's down. They rush to get the corpse to the morgue, in hopes of preserving any clues or evidence that might be there.

As Vlax looks around the alleyway as he makes to leave, he looks back towards the hole in the brick where Smith's bullet is lodged.

"You still here, Detective?" O'Malley's question snaps Vlax out of it... whatever 'it' was. The Detective sees all four patrolmen are back in the alley with him. "We were surprised to see your car. Figured you'd be at the morgue, or fillin' out paperwork by now. You okay?" O'malley puts a hand on Vlax's shoulder and looks at him, a bit concerned.

"Anyway, since you're here I guess we can fill you in. A whole lotta nothin'. The best we got is a woman on the fifth floor of that building," he says, indicating the building Vlax had found a scrap of cloth on, "Said her dog went ballistic at about 3:45am. Little yorkie, I guess usually doesn't make a peep. But isn't that what they all say? Anyway, the only other reports we got were two of her neighbors woke up at 3:45 due to a dog barking. Everyone else was asleep. Hell, a few of 'em still were when we knocked. Not everyone answered, either."

The officers head off to start their paperwork, and a quick glance at Vlax's watch tells him it's just after 8:30. Where was his mind for... roughly two hours?

As he leaves the alleyway to get in his car, the crows above caw loudly and finally fly away.
Jun 2, 2023 1:11 pm
Just before the detective leaves, on his way to the morgue, he tries to catch at least one of the patrol officers (or radios it in, if too late) and ask about who called in the crime and reported it. More importantly, had anyone questioned that person. He intimates that he might like to get that person into an interrogation room back at HQ and sweat them a bit.

Assuming they had at least a basic crime scene crew... clearly not the full-blown forensics we're used to today, back in the '70s
Vlax makes sure that a crime scene crew is sent to that phone to try and see if they can get any prints, or other forensic evidence. Realizing that pay phones are used by a lot of people, the chance of getting a lead from there is slim, but cases have been solved with less.

His next preferred destination is the morgue, and the body. As much as he doesn't look forward to closely inspecting this particular corpse, it's necessary.
Jun 2, 2023 1:49 pm
When Vlax arrives at the morgue, he finds Dr. Williams has been hard at work. Diener Ellis, a young man whose body just isn't made for scrubs, lets him in and walks him to the autopsy room, announcing the Detective to the coroner and his assistant.

There is a great deal of information already jotted down, and they're in the process of weighing organs.

"Detective," Willaims says as a greeting without looking up from his work. "It will take me some time to have a full report submitted. This one is... peculiar, let's say. I assume you want the Cliff's Notes version early? There's so much, because there's so little."

The old man places a kidney on the scale, and his assistant writes.

"The biggest oddity? There was no blood. More than that, there was no wound to account for the loss of blood. Not a drop on her, her clothes, the cord she was tied with, anythibg. No big injury like a severed artery or missing limb. The blood just... wasn't there. And it was gone before the strips of flesh were carved. Speaking of, the precision of the cuts is unbelievable. Perfectly straight lines, the corners are exactly ninety degrees, the depth of each cut is uniform -- meaning pressure was consistant. Each cut! Each of the removed strips is uniform, so that means uniform pressure at all times. It's... it's impossible. You simply cannot be that precise!

At the moment I'm ruling cause of death as unknown. The strips of flesh that were removed, while horrific, wouldn't have been lethal -- barring shock, or infection later on. She seems to have died from a lack of blood... but I don't have the first clue where it went or how it left her body. It's like it simply stopped existing."
Jun 2, 2023 3:07 pm
Vlax sighs, "Perhaps there will be something in the toxicology that explains the lack of blood. I know how absurd that sounds, but I'm at a loss for other options. I also know the tox lab takes quite some time, but perhaps you can put a rush on it. This is clearly a special case, and not a routine toxicology."

He looks at the body, while keeping a respectable distance, and of course touching nothing. He's appreciative of the corner offering up these early condensed versions of the final report, so he can get started on his investigation. He doesn't want to betray that trust.

"So, the strips are flesh. Any ideas what someone might do with, how many? Have we counted them yet? Anyway, what someone would do with this many pieces of flesh, not to mention this exact size and shape?" He asks.
Jun 2, 2023 3:44 pm
Dr. Williams shakes his head. "No clue. Eight strips are missing. Four from the front of the torso, four from the back of the torso. Some Gein-inspired individual perhaps? Although for a trophy-taker, I wouldn't think strips of flesh would be what they were after."

He stops and sighs, looking up at the Detective. When he makes eye contact, the tiredness in the coroner's eyes is unmistakable... and it isn't lack of sleep, or even his age. His tired runs much deeper than that.

"Scalpel," he says plainly. "That's about the only thing I can think of that would be fine enough and cut cleanly enough for these lines. Maybe a straight razor if it was sharpened meticulously?"

He goes back to work, the room falling silent as he places the other kidney on the scale to be recorded. "I can put a rush on the tox screen. This case should probably be the priority. Still, it'll take a bit."
Jun 2, 2023 6:26 pm
Vlax says he understands. "I really I don't have any other leads. There were no witnesses. We call came from an anonymous source. There's no one to even talk to about it. I suppose it was that one creepy super. Think I'll go see if I can get patrol to bring him in for questioning."

Vlax excuses himself, and ask the corner to call as soon as he's finished, or sooner if you find something of merit. "As usual, dispatch will know where I am, and can reach me by radio.".

The detective makes more notes, regarding the skin and blood, basically just documenting the conversation he had with the corner. He then heads back to his desk, so he can await a phone call, and the range for that weirdo to get picked up.

Vlax talks to a few people, and while they're letting the night shift officers go home they'll get the paperwork to send a car out and scoop up the super.

Two hours later, a call comes in. Considering the case from that morning, they requested Vlax respond. After getting no response, and then a warrant, the officers entered the super's apartment... and found him dead.
Jun 3, 2023 1:49 pm
a look of shock on his face, Vlax jump's up, grabs his weapon and holsters it. Grabs his badge. And then rushes out the door. On the way there, he's been scenarios through his mind. Certainly that individual was bizarre, and seem to be far too well dressed to be living there much less dressed like that for early morning. He had resolved himself to the fact that the man had been involved in some kind of overnight party, that lasted into the a.m. Now he wonders if the man had actually seen or knew too much and the killer got to him. Then he starts to think about the girl's body and wonders if this guy will be treated the same way. He smashes the accelerator and activates the siren.
Jun 5, 2023 8:01 pm
Vlax pulls up to the apartment building, killing his siren and lights before rushing inside. He heads to the elavator and right up to apartment 10E, finding the unfortunate sight of crime scene tape and an officer at the door.

"The deceased is one Edward Schmidt. Single white male, 57 years of age. Found in his bed."

Ducking under the tape, Vlax finds a reasonably sized two bedroom apartment, well kept and clean. It does in fact have an amazing view. Moving to the master bedroom he sees the body, and one thing is readily obvious -- he has never seen this person before.
Jun 5, 2023 11:52 pm
"Damn!" Vlax mutters. Turning to the other officers already here, we need to immediately identify this victim. Who found him? We need to confirm that this is, in fact, the lessor here and also the super".

He quickly looks forofficer Rogers and if he is not on scene already, he insists someone radio for him to get here, ASAP.

He then quickly explains that the person he and officer Rodgers met earlier is not this person? He gives a description of that person who creeped him out, and insist that a APB / BOLO be broadcast, with that man's description. He is to be considered armed, and dangerous, and a person of interest in a murder investigation.

After all that, he starts his scene investigation, same as others. Teying to avoid contamination of evidence.
OOC:
In case you didn't know... an APB is an All Points Bulletin, shared with other precincts, in municipal jurisdictions nearby. A BOLO is a "be on the lookout" broadcast.. with specific details, physical description, etc.

OOC:
APB I knew. BOLO is new though, so that's cool. Always nice to learn something!
Rodgers arrives on scene about ten minutes after you call him. He's not thrilled, of course. With a sigh he radios in to put out the bulletins. "All I had to do was finish my report and I could go home and sleep." You can hear the defeat in his voice as he resigns himself to what is quickly turning in to at least a double shift.

Questioning the officers that were on scene, Ashland and Barnes, they tell you they were sent to bring the super in for questioning, and when there was no answer got clearance to breach the door. They found him in bed, and outside of checking his pulse via his left wrist haven't touched anything. You also realize the deceased has to live here... there are family photos with him included all over the place.
OOC:
Alrighty... first crime scene roll will have a +1 modifier.

Vlax explains to Rogers that he wants confirmation not only inpersonbut in their reports, that this victimis not the person who pretended to be the super earlier. He also needs to compare his memory of that guy and the description he put out, to Rogers memories.

"No, I get it," the officer says with a sigh. "I just don't have to like it. But that ain't him, unless he lived another 30 years this morning." He goes over what he remembers from their interaction with the suspect, and it seems to pretty much match up with Vlax's own memories -- which are nothing like the body in bed here and now.

Vlax is also surprised to find that outside of some basic stuff -- wallet, keys, ID card -- the apartment has a lot of stuff, but not a lot of evidence. No signs of forced entry, no signs of conflict, no signs of injury -- nothing.
Jun 7, 2023 4:26 pm
Vlax considers what the officer said about 30 years older and tries to consider that option. Might the man here be an older version of the other? "Is that just because he's older, or do you think there is a resemblance?" He asks.

Vlax makes a note in his notepad, a reminder, to ask if the station has a sketch artist on staff or retainer that had been trained in any kind of age progression or in this case regression. It was a stretch to hope for, but perhaps a larger, neighboring jurisdiction might have them, or the staties or feds? He sighs at the though of having to ask for help.

He also writes a few bullet points in the margin, to ask the coroner later.

No wounds?
No blood?
Skin strips?

"Make sure crime scene folks get good pictures, especially of his face, and collect those family photos. Since we had someone impersonating him earlier." he tells some of the on scene officers.

Turning his attention to the bigger picture he starts looking for signs that the victims clothing may have been taken. Versus the impersonater just dressing differently. Matter of fact, it doesn't look like anything's been taken.

Lastly, he searches for items that would identify family members, friends, and better yet a list of tenants.. If this person in fact was the super, then they should have all kinds of records somewhere.

Officer Rodgers will peer a little closer at the corpse. "Nah, face is different. Even if we ignore hair color and style since those can change... eyes are different, both color and shape. Nose is different, cheekbones... the entire facial structure really."

As Vlax searches for information, he starts with the writing desk in the other bedroom that was turned into an office. He's able to find a tenant list, as well as a ledger for rent payments, complaints, requests, and repairs (both apartment and building). It's all neatly organized, the handwriting is always black ink with neat block printing. Mistakes are lined out with a single line and initialed. Meticulous is an understatement... if only everyone kept reacords so well.

I think you're rolling an extra d10? Your pool is 6d10 right? Wits 3 + Investigation 2 + A specialty in crime scenes?

That said, if I knock the right-most die off each roll, your second post still gives you one success on each roll... so I'll use that one.
As Vlax is searching the desk, he finds a slip of paper tucked away. The only thing on it is neatly pri ted numbers:

"44.23.37.02.16"

After some thinking, he realizes it's most likely a combination to a safe. He begins searching the room and finds nothing. As he expands his radius, he eventually finds a wall safe, hidden behind books on a book shelf in the hallway.
Jun 7, 2023 11:49 pm
OOC:
Yes, i think i started with 7. I mist have mis_counted. oh, it's because you said my first one was +1, and that was 7.. so I forgot to remove that on subsequent rolls, -1 in my mind was my initial roll of 7, minus 1 is 6... Etc... Sorry
Vlax first puts the numbers into his notes, for safe keeping. He scans the safe for any type of anti-tampering mechanism. It wouldn't do much good to ooen it and set something off that destroyed the contents. Maybe he's paranoid, but this murder has him on edge.

Only after he's convinced it's safe does he try to open it.
Jun 8, 2023 12:29 am
There doesn't appear to be any sort of "trap" rigged to the safe. Spinning the dial a few times and entering the combination results in the soft thunk of some internal mechanism, and the door swings open smoothly.

Inside is a standard envelope with stack of hundred dollar bills and a single fifty on top, and a small notebook -- inside is the same neat block print with black ink from the ledger.

There is a list of dates. Pages and pages of dates. One date listed every month.
Jun 8, 2023 3:35 pm
Vlax tells processing to get a picture of what's in the safe, and then spend some time studying the list of dates. He tries to see if there's anything logical or any kind of pattern to the dates. Clearly it's one day each month, but rent is typically collected on a specific date each month such as the first day or maybe twice a month the first and 15th. He wants to compare the next date coming up, to the current date to see how far out it might be. You might be beneficial to have someone here, staking this place out on that day.

Sighing. He makes one more pass through the place, hopeful that the crime scene folks can make heads or tails of it. He tries to get a really good look at the body too, without touching it of course. Looking for anything out of the ordinary. He then of course asks everyone else on scene if they have found anything.

After a bit, Rodgers heads out to finish his earlier report and get started on a new one. Ashland and Barnes don't have much of anything to add -- the whole situation seems so pedestrian. If they hadn't been here to bring someone in, this would have just been some middle aged gentleman passing in his sleep.

There isn't much found, although pictures are taken of the safe and the writing desk, in addition to the body and bedroom. There's so little of note, it almost raises red flags... but should it? A lot of people lead simple lives, with simple routines. They like boring. Excitement is what happens on vacation.

Initially Vlax doesn't spot any patterns to the dates listed in the safe outside of them all being within the first week of the month. The entries aren't all the first or fifth, for example. They aren't all on a particular day of the week. That's when Vlax gets the idea to compare dates from the safe to the actual rental ledger.

As he's looking over the information, others go about their work around him.
OOC:
This is an extended roll, so go ahead and keep making Intelligence + Investigation rolls with no modiers. You have two successes from your first roll. We're rolling till we hit 10 successes total.

Every roll represents a half hour of pouring over numbers.
Jun 9, 2023 12:57 pm
"Anyone here find a calendar or appointment book," he blurts out as he tries to make a connection between the dates in the safe and rental records. He mutters to himself, "... If it's always the first week, maybe that's a deep cleaning day, inspection day, maintenance visit day..." Then he thinks of the stack of cash. Protection racket? Payoff? Hmmmmm.
OOC:
hoping if I actually trip up on something the old-fashioned way, by thinking it up on my own... It might earn me a bonus in one of these rolls eventually. Lol

There is a desk calendar. The only things written on it are building related -- inspections, repairs, the like. It's all big ticket stuff, things a super can't do on their own.

One of the officers will bring the Detective a wall calendar from the bedroom. It has dates of a more personal nature listed... doctors appointments, birthdays, a wedding, his youngest child's college graduation. He certainly kept his job and his personal life seperate.
OOC:
Three successes total so far.
Jun 9, 2023 1:44 pm
"If this guys is the super, we need to also consider who he report to? Look around for any correspondence from the property managers, and or the owner of this place

Vlax catches himslf barking order to the rest of the crime scene crew and it's natural, not to mention it's a valid part of his job, but he remembers his days on the other side of this, a patrolman, a little chafed by the detective. He will have to remember to buy this group a round of drinks sometime soon. Now, he has to shake it off and focus.

If you don't want things to be found, and you're meticulous, then you will hide things.... he tells himself. So he starts looking for loose boards, loose tiles, hidden compartments in the desk, sections of the ceiling that might pop up.

Vlax doesn't realize just how long he spends pouring over numbers, but when he's able to have his breakthrough it all feels worth it.

He went back over years worth of monthly dates, but over the course of four and a half hours he is finally able to establish one constant -- the only apartment that paid rent on every date listed in the small notebook that was in the safe.

Apartment 8A. Kimberly Hale is listed as the tenant. Has been for over a decade.
Jun 10, 2023 7:10 pm
Vlax decides he needs to find and talk to Ms. Hale
Jun 10, 2023 11:41 pm
Vlax heads to 8A. Unfortunately, there is no answer. There is, however, a small note that appears to have been taped to the wall next to the door a long time ago:
I work nights, and sleep days. Please do not disturb.

Thank you.

A quick glance at his watch verifies it's almost 3:00pm. It also makes him realize how hungry he is.
Jun 10, 2023 11:46 pm
Time for a meal break, he thinks. Somewhere with lots of strong coffee, he thinks to himself realizing how little sleep he's got and how little sleep he's going to get. He writes "Call me ASAP" on the back of one of his business cards, and then sticks it in the door jamb of her apartment. He decides to look for somewhere close by, a diner, where you can grab a bite but not be too far away. As a matter of fact he thinks he'll get it to go, so he can stake out the building from across the street, and eat in his car while he watches to see who comes and goes and what they look like. Is always the chance she'll see his card in bolt. He has no reason to believe she's implicated really, but other hunches have found out in the past.
Jun 10, 2023 11:57 pm
There's a Denny's a handful of blocks away. It doesn't take them long to fill the order, and Vlax is back to the scene of the crime -- in this instance, more literally than metaphorically. People come and go. Cars pass. Crows seem to like the area though.

At no point does Vlax see the imposter from the early hours.
Jun 11, 2023 2:09 pm
Vlax will try the door again at 630pm and failing that once per hour. He looks for signs that someone has exited or entered.

When back in the car, he checks in with dispatch to make sure no calls came in for him while he was on stakeout.

Jun 11, 2023 3:28 pm
Just after six, Vlax will have a patrol car swing by and Rodgers and Smith -- back on shift, and both frankly looking like shit -- have some information.

"It gets weird," Rodgers tells Vlax. "The super, Schmidt, the real one... died peacefully in his bed from having no blood in his body. Not a mark on him. Doc said it was just like nobody filled his tank.

Anyway, I'm on three hours sleep. Smith is on five. We're gonna grab coffee before we start patrolling, but radio if you need us Detective."

With that, the two roll out leaving the detective to his vigil.

No answer (and no calls, according to dispatch) at 6:30. Or 7:30. Or 8:30. Hell, the business card is still in the doorjamb where he left it. At 9:30, when he knocks on the door to 8A, a woman's voice calls, "Just a minute!"

It takes a few minutes, but Vlax hears a deadbolt unlock... then another deadbolt... then the door opens -- still held by a chain. A rather petite woman stands in the gap to the door. She's wearing a bathrobe and slippers, her brunette hair pulled back into something resembling a bun. A pair of glasses sit perched on her nose, and she looks up at the detective.

"May I help you?"
Jun 11, 2023 3:44 pm
Vlax, as he speaks, takes quick note of her features, troes to estimate her age, and any other moles, marks or striking features. He also glances behind her to see what he can of the apartment beyond.

Detective Gbaf, and sorry to disturb you but we need to chat about the super, Mr. Schmidt. I'm investigating a series of criminal behavior both in and around this building. Do you mind? I thought you might prefer to chat her, and save us a trip downtown. he tries to convey a confidence pinned to an authoritative tone, not to mention the seriousness of it all.
Jun 11, 2023 4:49 pm
She seems young... early twenties? Clear skin, no notable marks. The apartment beyond is mostly dark, a bit of light coming from the other side of the room beyond the doorway.

"Um... I'm not really supposed to let anyone in. Oh! It's nothing illegal. It's... proprietary. Can you... can you keep a secret? I mean, are you allowed to?" The woman seems flustered, possibly even nervous. "Ok, um... yeah, hold on."

With that, she shuts the door and you hear the chain slide. She opens the door, and steps back to turn an overhead light on. She lets Vlax in and then shuts the door, putting the chain back in place.

The apartment has heavy blackout curtains over the windows. It's sparsely furnished, but what is there certainly seems to be quality. She offers Vlax a seat (one of the two in the living room). The coffee table has Popular Mechanics magazines haphazardly stacked up on it. The whole room is clean... it feels like it's edging towards sterile.

What really catches the eye is a large work table. Some sort of project is spread out over it, in pieces of course. Looks electronic, but... larger scale than radios or TVs.

"I, um... I'm working on computers. I really think they're going to change our lives! The idea is to have them in peoples' homes... think of the potential! But... no one is supposed to know, so I guess I'm trusting your discretion." When she mentions computers, she seems to come alive. For just a brief second, Vlax can feel her excitement, and her smile is genuine.

"So, um... what's going on?"
Jun 11, 2023 5:09 pm
Vlax gets out his notebook and prepares to take notes as he accepts the seat offered, "As long as this computer stuff isn't criminal, then your secret is safe with me". he grins as he speaks to hopefully disarm and maybe relax her, hopefully.

"Let's start simply, as I'm sure you understand... I can't and really and shouldn't openly discuss the fine details of an active investigation, but I should tell you that Mr. Schmidt may have been mixed up in something criminal.". He begins. He doesn't intend to mention much yet. And instead keeps her in the dark.
OOC:
In the interest of time, I'm going to outline a series of questions. If you prefer we roleplay this slowly, and using specific language we can do so. I didn't know if you just wanted me to throw a bunch of questions and you throw back a bunch of answers and let it develop that way. Let me know.
He asks how long she has been a tenant. He asks how well she knew the super. How was her dealing with him, fairness vs contention. Had she ever been involved with him outside of a landlord relationship. Does she know his friends, or the building owners. Did he or any tenant have issues or disputes. Last time she saw him.

He will shift toward the end...
Why does her business require her to work in the evening if it's just computer related. Why the blackout drapes, and how does sunlight affect computers?
Jun 11, 2023 6:03 pm
She has been a tenant a little over a decade now.
She didn't know Mr. Schmidt that well, and never saw him outside of his role as landlord. He was always fair, mentioning the early days when her rent payments were late sometimes. She keeps to herself. The last time she saw him was when she paid rent at the beginning of the month.

She doesn't have to work at night, but she's always been a night owl. She feels more awake, more alert. The curtains are so she can sleep during the day. She offers up a sheepish smile and admits her recliner is ridiculously comfortable, and she sleeps in it about half the time.
Jun 11, 2023 11:41 pm
OOC:
Sorry had a last minute thing come up out of nowhere. Friend going through a divorce, needed help. She's moving.
Vlax starts asking about her payment and does she have any idea why he would mark down the exact day that she paid her rent. Every month. Locked up in his safe was a list of dates and they correlated exactly on the dates that she paid rent. Sure other apartments paid rent, but we're not consistently on the exact date that he marked down. Did she ever catch him lurking and watching her? Yeah
Jun 12, 2023 12:03 am
OOC:
No worries! Life is gonna life.
"I assumed he wrote down the exact date when everyone paid their rent? Does he not?"
Jun 12, 2023 1:39 pm
Vlax explains, "The super did in fact write down everybody's date of payment. Meticulous with his notekeeping, in fact. Oddly enough though he had a separate list in a safe with a lot of cash, and with that is a list of dates that are only the dates she made payments. A list separate from the official records, is odd ... Wouldn't you agree?

Regardless of her answer, he feigns an intent to wrap up the interview. He thanks her for her cooperation and asks her if she minds providing ID, so he can officially annotate his report.

What he doesn't tell her is that he's looking for her date of birth. If she's in her early twenties, and she's been a tenant for over a decade.. when did she start renting, age 12. Things don't seem to be adding up.
Jun 12, 2023 2:20 pm
"Oh! Um... yeah, that..." She shrugs. "The building pays the power bill, but... I use more power than the other apartments. It was an issue, until we agreed I could make a monthly payment to cover the extra cost. Which is what I've done."

When the Detective asks for ID she cocks her head for a moment then snaps her fingers. "Nighstand! I'll be right back!" She hops up and dashes off towards the bedroom, coming back about thirty seconds later with her state driver's license.

As Vlax jots down the information, he checks her DOB and realizes she's 34 years old. Even though she doesn't look a day over 23.
Jun 12, 2023 2:37 pm
Vlax nods, visibly as he writes down her ID number, issue date, etc. "Well, I guess that makes a lot of sense. I don't know much about electronics but I can imagine," he shares as he smiles at her and gives back her ID.[

He then clears his throat and explains, "Well, I should tell you that Me. Schmidt is deceased. In fact, he appears to have been murdered.. He gauges her reaction, then describes the suspect impersonating the super to see if he sounds familiar to her, and gauges that reaction and response. Finally, he doesn't give details but he tells of another murder, in the alley between the buildings ... involving a little girl. He describes the girl, her age, hair, features, bit not the gruesome aspects of the scene, to see what kind of response that elicits.
OOC:
If I need to make some type of investigative roll to measure the detectives insight into her reactions and responses, I'd like to gauge his belief in what she's saying when she says it.

Kimberly's eyes go wide when Vlax tells her the super was murdered. She drops into her chair and claps a hand to her mouth and looks like she's about to cry when she hears about the little girl.

"No, I'm sorry, that description doesn't sound familiar to me. Is... is that who you think killed Mr. Schmidt? I... I can keep an eye out. I mean, I don't go out often but when I do, I..." She pulls her knees to her chest and buries her face.

Vlax stands and once again thanks her for her cooperation. He discourages her from doing anything that would put her in harm but should she see anyone suspicious, be at the person she described or anyone else, she should get to a safe place then call it in immediately.

Vlax realizes He should reach out to persons, and see if he can identify the girl. Perhaps there's a correlation between the two victoms.
OOC:

Considering it was 0430 when he reported to the alleyway, he would have needed at least 15-20 minutes to get out of bed, dress, and get to the scene, and it's pushing 2200 now... he's been awake for roughly 18 hours.

Tired, but not to a point of suffering penalties.
Jun 12, 2023 6:35 pm
OOC:
Okay please lmk when or if he gets to that point. I assume he will push the limit, but knows when he hits it... He needs to rest.
Vlax goes back to his office, seeking out first ...a refresh to his coffee. Sometimes he thinks if you cut him, he will bleed coffee...he drinks so much of the stuff.

He then calls missing persons, to see what he can learn about the girl victim, if anything.
Jun 12, 2023 8:21 pm
Coffee is always on at the precinct, thankfully.

One call to missing persons reveals no new cases in the past three days, and none in over a month that involved a girl under 15.
Jun 12, 2023 8:30 pm
Vlax is stumped. After the little girl be, not missing? He in turn makes a call to the coroner's office to see if there's been any developments from the corpse brought in, from the supers apartment.

The coroner's assistant doesn't have much to report on the super, outside of the body having no blood -- much the same as the little girl. That said, Edward Schmidt had all of his skin, and indeed all of his body parts. No trophies were taken. (And yes, at the moment the coroner believes the strips of flesh taken from the girl were trophies... it may seem unlikely, but he has nothing else to explain the behavior.)

As Vlax drinks another cup of coffee, he ponders why the litle girl they found wasn't reported as missing... and realizes that the easiest answer is that she was simply never reported.

He also realizes he was technically off hours ago, and has less than eight hours before his shift starts again. He's faced with something of a dilema, and only he can make the decision -- stick it out, or get some rest and keep at it tomorrow.
Jun 13, 2023 1:49 pm
Vlax decides to retire for some much needed sleep. He might be able to think of something after trying to relax and shutdown for a few hours. He packs everything up and grabs a few ciluos of water from the water cooler on the way out. Time to flush the caffeine out and get some shut eye.
Jun 13, 2023 4:07 pm
Vlax is able to get most of a night of sleep, although it certainly was fitful. Still, his head is clear and he's (more or less) ready for the day.

At his desk, there's a few things waiting for him. Dr. Williams called and confirmed the tox screen for the girl came back clean. He also briefly explains how the girl and the super are almost identical, at least as far as autopsies go. Lastly, the coroner mentions he truly doesn't have an answer for this -- he's never seen anything like it, can't even find anything comparable in texts.

Vlax also got a call in the wee hours of the night, and the caller left a message.
Check my mailbox.

- Kim

Lastly, there is a padded manilla envelope on his desk, sealed with no writing at all. It seems perfectly centered.
Jun 13, 2023 9:57 pm
OOC:
does Vlax have a portable fingerprint kit, or maybe one in his desk? Something he could quickly use to dust this envelope which no doubt will have prints from the courier, and whoever put it on his desk but who knows he might get lucky and pick up a latent. If not then he will try to see if he can call someone up from the crime scene division to quickly dust it.
"Anyone see who brought this in? Anyone ask the person who brought it in who gave it to them?" he asks the other colleagues in the office.

While waiting for all that he calls Kim.
Jun 13, 2023 11:13 pm
Kim doesn't answer. That said, it's just after 6:00am, she may have turned in already.

Someone will come up and dust the envelope for prints. They find none. Additionally, no one is sure who, how, or when it wound up on your desk.
Jun 14, 2023 2:31 pm
Vlax will wait until someone dusta the prints, but he calls for dispatch and asks they send a unit to Kim's apartment and do a welfare check, but for the patrol officer to call him first.

When they call, he explains that considering that there have been two murders in an adjacent to that building, and she's a person of interest, that if she does not enter the door look around and make sure there's no signs of blood, forced entry etc and if there is go in, and be ready for a fight, but also be ready to preserve a crime scene.

After he hangs up, he hopes upon hope that there's not been yet another victim, and this time is poor young lady who was so nice and helpful.
Jun 14, 2023 7:49 pm
It'll take twenty minutes or so, but the call comes in that Kim's apartment looks fine. No signs of forced entry, no damage, no blood. Officer is asking if he should enter.
OOC:
As of last post the envelope was dusted, no prints found.
Jun 14, 2023 10:41 pm
OOC:
oops I clearly misread that. I saw that you said someone will come up to do it, and clearly miss the next sentence that said it was done with no findings. Sorry
Vlax opens the envelope as he says, "No. Don't enter. We really don't have cause and she has made it quite clear that she sleeps during the day.

He pauses, abd says, "Well, uhm. unless of course, officer you take another look and see something that concerns you, or you hear something and makes you think she might be in danger and then you would be obligated to... " He doesn't finish, but the officer almost certainly knows how he meant to finish it.
Jun 14, 2023 11:39 pm
OOC:
No worries, just figured I'd mention it.
"Understood," the officer replies.

As the radio goes silent, Vlax opens the manilla envelope.

Vlax drops the envelope immediately, both out of a hint of shock, but also to preserve any evidence inside the envelope. He does manage to express and explicative as he does so.

Get that forensics team back in here, he blurts out to no person in particular, just whomever might be in earshot. He notices he's holding his hands up as if the thing was acid, probably a subconscious reaction to the shock.

He gathers himself, gets his notebook, and starts looking through to see the exact number of those trips that were missing from the girl's body, and comparing the size. He has little doubt that this is from her, but he just wants to make sure. Plus he can't remember exactly how many were cut off of her.

He waits to see if the forensics team can get anything from inside the envelope, be it latent trace evidence, or just something else. He didn't really take time to see beyond the skin. You might want to get the corner involved, as they will have a pretty good idea where this came from. Maybe they can run some tests and confirm it, he adds, when he speaks to the forensic team who collect the evidence.

Vlax leaps to his feet, making sure he has his gun, badge, etc and racist to his car. Lights, sirens, fret, he makes way to the scene already very much worried about what he's going to find.
Jun 15, 2023 2:26 pm
Minutes later, Vlax arrives at an apartment building he is becoming entirely too familiar with of late. The paramedics seem to have gotten there right before him.

Having ridden in the elevator, the Detective knows they aren't getting a gurney in there... which means they're taking eight flights of stairs. He might be able to beat them to the apartment.

I'm good with whatever you decide. It's your world, and I tend to agree things weren't the same in the '70s. I'm constantly reminding myself of that as I play as well. We didn't have cell phones, we didn't have personal computers or internet, we didn't have DNA.
Vlax wonders of somehow he sent that patrolman into danger. Did he, by implying that he should enter, lure that man into making a bad decision. This entire event is weighing on his mind. Well he doesn't believe there's anything he can do to help the man, medically, and he has no idea what his condition is yet. His instincts take over and the will to protect a fallen warrior.
Jun 15, 2023 5:24 pm
Taking the elevator up, Vlax is on edge incase the situation is still dangerous, but arriving at Kimberly's apartment he assesses the situation immediately.

Parts of the frame are splintered from where the deadbolts ripped free. The officer is missing part of his skull, blood and bone and more sprayed over the wall. A quick inspection reveals holes in the drywall from buckshot. There doesn't appear to be any movement or activity in or around the apartment, however.
Jun 15, 2023 5:33 pm
OOC:
Does Vlax have a portable handheld radio, to call dispatch. I'm pretty sure those existed in the '70s, they were just probably a lot more bulky than they are now.
Vlax sees that the patrolman is beyond help. He immediately starts looking for anyone else, but he does so very carefully, and very stealthfully.

If Kim we're in here and asleep, that blast should have woken her. Then there's the question of who called this in? As soon as he thinks it's safe to do so, he'll probably radio in and ask. He looks for footprints in the blood, or any trail that would show anyone coming to or away from this area. If it was a trap right to the back side of the door, someone called in ...officer down.
Jun 15, 2023 5:45 pm
As Vlax begins searching, he is startled when the downed officer moves a bit, gasping and gurgling on the floor. He's in a bad way, but he isn't dead!

Vlax quickly calls on the radio. " Tell those medics to hurry, he's alive, but barely. And where's my backup? the detective kneels down beside the man, taking off his own shirt to use it as a bandage. He looks for somewhere safe to put it but is reluctant to put pressure on an exposed skull. Instead he tries to hold the man still and if he sees any spurting arteries, concentrate his efforts there.. We need help, he calls out! hoping someone nearby might be willing to help.

No worries. Don't overextend yourself. Being sick is ass.
It only takes about another minute, but for Vlax it feels like an eternity until the EMTs, huffing from racing up eight flights of stairs, get to the doorway. Looking past the medics, it looks like officers moved with the EMTs, likely as security. The medics will begin prepping the downed officer for transport. They're quick, efficient... consumate professionals. It still takes everything Vlax has not to yell at them to hurry.

Minutes tick by, and they lift the officer onto the stretcher and head towards the stairs. More cops have arrived, and after a quick exchange four that just arrived will tail the medics down the stairs... which gives the original four time to breathe.

Now it's just Vlax and a half dozen patrolmen in Kimberly's little apartment.
Jun 16, 2023 2:24 pm
Okay guys, stack up. Just like we did at the academy. I know you probably haven't done it since, but we need to clear this apartment and do it properly. We should all look out for gun wielding thugs and I don't know if this was a trap but we'll know soon. As far as I know the only occupant should be a woman in her thirties who looks younger, named Kim.

He calls out on the radio, to dispatch, "I say again, who called in officer down?" Even before he gets a reply he start making hand gestures, dividing the crew into three teams of four. Instructing one team to go left, one to go right, and hos team the third, to cover.
OOC:

Dispatch replies, informing you the call came in over the radio.

As the officers stack up to sweep the apartment, it feels a bit like overkill. The livingroom and kitchen is sort of an open "L" shaped area, then there's a closet and a bathroom... both of which you determine very quickly are empty. No people, no weapons, no traps.

Although you do notice the electronics she was working on are completely gone from the work table in the living room.

Once the place is swept and declare clear...Vlax tells the patrolmen to start setting up a perimeter, and to coordon off pretty much the entire building.

if tenants need to come or go, they will have to be escorted, and only after their identities and credentials are recorded. Tell them only that there have been multiple murders, and at least one person is missing.

Anyone puts up a fuss, detain them, as a potential suspect at a crime scene during an ongoing investigation, to be questioned by detectives. You can frisk, for officer safety, but don't search, not without probable cauae.

With that he begins his investigation of the crime scene, both inside and out.

Vlax's initial pass seems pretty open and shut. The angle of gunfire came from the short hallway. The bathroom maybe? Or the closet? (Although he isn't sure why she'd be in the closet, it was just a standard coat closet.)

No signs of the officer firing his service weapon. Based on spray, he didn't even make it very far into the apartment. A lot of blood near the doorjamb, some in the hall.

Vlax convinces himself she would not have shot an officer, announcing himself. He thinks it might not have been Kim, but possibly an abductor, the person who took her electronics, or someone else.

He decides to look for evidence that she took her purse and other important things that no woman would leave without. He wonders if she left of her own accord.

On the off chance that there WAS a reson be in the closet, he focuses his search there for a hidden compartment, or a back door.

Vlax confirms there is absolutely nothing special about the closet.

He isn't sure how she would have escaped... the only exit is the door. The windows in the living room covered by the blackout curtains don't open. The kitchen is to the inside of the apartment, and neither the bathroom or closet have windows.
Jun 17, 2023 3:09 pm
Vlax is forced to resort to good old fashioned searching for clues. Are their signs of fixing a meal recently? Do the cabinets and refrigerator look normal with normal contents? Are their leftovers? Are their journals or a diary here? Do bedroom nightstands have anything? What does the medicine cabinet in the bathroom contain? Are their cleaning supplies in the apartment?
Are their financial records, taxes, receipts anything in the form of official paperwork? Looking under furniture to see if anything was accidentally discarded and overlooked? What about shell casings, were there any left on scene?
Jun 17, 2023 3:28 pm
Vlax finds the kitchen cabinets and refrigerator aren't empty, but don't have much. No leftovers, no signs of recent cooking or meal prep. It's mostly all shelf-stable foods... a lot of canned and dried goods.

There is no bedroom. Medicine cabinet, much like the kitchen, has some basics but not much. Cleaning supplies are found in both the kitchen and bathroom. There is no documentation, paperwork, journals, diaries, or really anywhere to keep any -- no desks or filing cabinets.

The tools and lights are still at the work table even if the electronics are gone. The apartment (outside of the crime scene at the door) is still ridiculously clean. No casings to be found.
Jun 17, 2023 5:17 pm
Vlax radios dispatch and asks if the person who heard the officer down can say woth any certainly if the voice on the radio was male or female, and if they record radio traffic?

Did the medicine cabinet contain prescription bottles or just over the counter stuff?

Once again, baffled, Vlax looks for some of the other officers on scene a lnd tells them we need another canvas. Maybe someone saw or heard something.

What kind of apartment doesnt have a bedroom? He says casually to one of the nearby officers. would you rent a place without a bedroom?. Vlax tries to recall if any of the documentation in the supers office indicated the size of each apartment. If there were any studios that would not include a bedroom?

"Probably, if I was single and tight on money," the officer shrugged. "Like a UW student maybe."

Dispatch will tell you it was a female voice. Nothing was recorded.

Medicine cabinet is all over the counter stuff. Also, some basic make-up.

He can't remember anything in the super's apartment outlining apartment composition.
Jun 17, 2023 8:25 pm
Vlax continues his sideline pondering, boucing questions and ideas off of the officer. "Come on man! One of our own is down, and evenif he lives..." Vlax starts getting visibly angry, a mechanism for his anguish. "I mean, what moron would build apartments with no bedroom and hope to rent them?" He is definitely reaching.... his mind scrambling for reason. [b]Are there murphy beds in the walls? Something.. He starts pulling down portraits, anything on the walls. Bookshelves? Finny looking wall paper.
Jun 17, 2023 8:34 pm
Everything seems normal. No fold out beds, no wonky wallpaper, nothing of the sort.
Jun 17, 2023 9:34 pm
Vlax resigns himself to the fact that there is nothing more to find here, as much as it disenheartens him. He will now turn his full attention to this Kimberly Hale.

While he waits at the station for the results of the canvas, he thinks of the patrolman who is likely in surgery at the hospital. He.tells himself he should be there, stacked up in the waiting room, where undoubtedly the entire precint has taken up residency. Then he reminds himself that he can do more good tracking down the killer.

Vlax begins and all out background on one Kimberly Hale. He pulls out his notes and the information he took from her ID card. He calls every resource, every neighboring jurisdiction, the staties, the feds, national records, social security, the DMV, media resources, confidential informants. He wants a criminal history, verification of her birth, anything the proves who she is and more importantly who she knows. He has to track her down.
Jun 17, 2023 10:53 pm

Ugh! What the..., Vlax realizes that he was so distracted by the damn creepy envelope that he misread the message, and thought it said to call her back, since she had called in. What a stupid mistake.

He rushes back to the scene to check her mailbox and to see if she has a lan-line phone and an answering machine. If he's lucky it will still have the cassette tape in it. She was into electronics, right.

Vlax is able to easily open her mailbox. Fortunately mail hasn't been dropped off yet, so there is only a plain white envelope with "Detective" written on the front.

Inside is a piece of paper:
Apartment 5F.
Jun 18, 2023 2:34 am
Vlax calls HQ an arranges for the desk sergent to secure a warrant for entry into 5f, based on the evidence on hand, connecting that unit with the ambush of the officer.

He then calls for SWAT because he doesn't want to walk into another ambush. He wants to make sure the building is surrounded.

While he awaits the warrant and for SWAT to gear up and arrive he radios and checks in with the officers who did the canvasing, each time. He tries to see if anyone spoke to 5F during any of those attempts, and if so ... gets that person on scene as well, so he can question them. Failing that, at least on the radio.

Only after everyone is in position and he alerts the entry team to be prepared for a shotgun reception, does he okay their attempt to gain entry. Knocking and asking first, then the SWAT way second.
Jun 18, 2023 3:03 am
While numerous people heard a crash followed by two loud booms in rapid succession, an officer will tell the Detective no one answered at 5F. Which is the same response Vlax will get when he knocks.

When SWAT breaches the door, there is no shotgun. There isn't even screaming or yelling. There's an apartment, blood, and two bodies.

The apartment stinks, and the flies attracted to the coagulated blood aren't helping. The bodies have clearly been here for a bit... over a day, easily. Looking around the living room as he takes in the scene in front of him, he notices the family photos... at least Vlax can answer one question -- he knows why no one reported the little girl as missing.

Vlax sighs and his shoulders visibly slump, as does his heart. Progress is good in any case, but the bodies just keep stacking up. Homicide detectives are able to motivate themselves, push past the horror, and contend with the psychological impact because they know that when they do the job well, they save lives.

Shaking off the turpor and the frustration he rolls up his sleeves and tells the officers on scene to prepare for another lengthy investigation. He backs everyone out nx calls inthe forensics teams, with the photographers first. There just isn't a rush on this one.

While he waits for those crews to go first, he looks around for security cameras. They are rare, expensive, and the quality of the image is usully very poor but it is worth looking.
Jun 18, 2023 1:39 pm
Time continues its relentless march forward as the teams come in, and Vlax oversees the proceedings. Feeling a bit like air traffic control at SeaTac, the detective guides the others as they come and go about their business.

After double checking, he confirms the apartment building doesn't have cameras. It makes sense. This area... well, it isn't the slums by any means, but it isn't one of the expensive parts of town. A lot of blue collar workers and service industry folk. Mix in some elderly on fixed incomes and some university students, and add a sprinkle of families just starting out... the money just isn't there. The building is well maintained, they clearly aren't avoiding inspections or putting off repairs, but that type of technology isn't cheap. One can only hope the technology needed becomes more affordable with time.

Speaking of technology, Kimberly worked with technology.

Speaking of Kimberly... how did she know to check this apartment?

He's snapped out of his train of thought as the forensics team wraps up and is ready to pull out of the scene. Vlax notices as he gets ready to move into action himself that with everything that happened, his shift was technically almost over. He briefly remembers officer Rodgers' lamentation over being held even later yesterday as he accepts he isn't likely to be off any time soon.
Jun 18, 2023 1:50 pm
Vlax tells Rodgers to go home, get some sleep, Your relief can help cover here, and quite frankly, you might need that rest. Something tells me we're not going to get a lot of sleep till we catch whoever started this mess. Take advantage while you can.

Vlax is very concerned about this Kimberly, and hasn't been able to get the thought out of his head regarding her involvement. "Did she stumble up on it? Was she involved? If so, why would she send him there? Could someone be setting her up? Certainly didn't seem to know anything or even suspect anything when I spoke to her.., He mumbles to himself, pondering all,the possibilities. He is very much aware that there are other possibilities that he hasn't probably entertained yet, but thinking them through is what .. eventually surfaces ...the other ideas.

Before starting his own walk through. Vlax asks the Forensics team to summarize what they found and expects at least one member to remain on scene in case he finds more on his own. With that, he starts circling the first room, at the walls, expecting every surface and under every item, radiating inward until he ends up in the middle of the room. You will have to finish his shift and rest later, realizing this is going to be another long one.

Can someone get this crew some coffee? , he barks out into the hallway...

The pictures of the parents and the little girl Vlax found trussed up in alleyway seem to watch over the Detective as he works.

As he works through the living room, he realizes it doesn't appear that anything is missing or even moved. The diamond ring is still on the mom's finger. It isn't a huge rock, but anyone looking to rob wouldn't have left it.

The mother's body is just inside the front door. There's blood spray... it looks like cause of death was a single cut across her throat. Seems like she barely saw it coming.

Did the forensics team find specific things on their sweep? That he should look at? In the '70s, they were barely more than people trained and taken good photographs, measuring things, recording documentation and sketches, and of course gathering up evidence in the bags... I don't think there was much science to it back then so much as being careful.
Vlax moves on to try and continue his spiral method of searching, room to room, area to area.

The forensics team took down data, sketched, logged everything they could. There wasn't much in the way of physical evidence to bag.

The dad's body was in the hall. Vlax finds bruising on his knuckles, suggesting he fought back. However, the number of light cuts on his hands, arms, torso, and even face... his death must have been torture. It looks like the killer played with him, taking his time -- unlike the wife, who was dispatched quickly. It strikes Vlax as sadistic, reminding him a bit of fencing. Not collegiate style, but old fashioned combat. The little cuts draw blood, slowly weakening the other person, slowing them down bit by bit and making it easier to score the next slice.

The girl's bedroom is small, but then again so was she. Some stuffed animals are haphazardly scattered on the floor, looking like they fell off the bed. The blankets are down at the foot, possibly yanked down... or fell when someone got up.

As Vlax sifts through the bedding, he finds traces of blood.

There doesn't seem to be much else to search... it's late afternoon, pushing evening. Coffee has helped, but Vlax is starting to feel his hunger.

And he still has nagging questions...

What happened to Kimberly?
Where did the person who impersonated the super get off to?
Who left the manilla envelope on his desk?
Will the officer that entered Kim's apartment pull through?

What's the next move?
Jun 18, 2023 10:19 pm
Eat, sleep, regroup. it's time to let all this sink in, and when coroners reports, more toxicology .. and anything has a chance to land on hos desk he can start sifting through the mountain of photos and evidence to try and find a hidden gem. Maybe there's a hint at an answer and all that.

It's the precinct, calling because there was a phonecall and the caller would only talk to Detective Gnaf. They wouldn't have bothered him, but... it's Kimberly Hale.

Vlax answers, "Detective Gnaf here. Kimberly!? Is that you? Are you okay?". He wants to convey concern for her welfare, and not a hint of accusation.
Jun 19, 2023 1:45 am
"Oh, I'm fine no thanks to Officer Friendly. I don't know why on God's green Earth he felt a need to kick my door in! I don't have a door now!"
Jun 19, 2023 3:14 am
That is not the response the detective anticipated, so he flips the switch (figuratively) and turns on the tone of an authitative dominant figure, explaining life's hard lessons... as he says, "Well, Kim, he thought you might be in trouble. Hurt?! That is what police officers do. You did call me, but not take my return call, then leave me a message that pointed to a murder."

He waits in silence to hear what she has to say, paying particular attention to the tone of voice, choice awards, and inflection. He's praying that his specialty experience in criminal investigation will win to his abilities who pick up on anything out of the ordinary.

He's not lost on the fact that it might not have been her that left a message. It could easily be this weirdo putting skin and envelopes, watching us, and knows I visited her, so they somehow arranged the entire thing. Her response will be very telling, but it also needs to very surely be her.

"What part of 'I sleep during the day' did you not understand? And 'he thought I was hurt?' Tell me detective... how do you know what he thought? Did he radio first? Did you tell him to kick in my door? I fucking do half your work for you, and you kick in my door while I'm asleep?! What the fuck?!" To say she sounds angry is an understatement.
Jun 19, 2023 3:53 am
Vlax responds in kind with disgust, So, wait?! What changed? One minute you are mortified with the prospect of it all. You never go anywhere. You never see anything. Then you suddenly know all this, and I'm NOT supposed to bash your door in?

He decides to test her, what about when you said to call or come by any time? We talked about your little fo not disturb note. We all like our sleep, but don't you think this qualifies?

"I never told you to stop by any time, you fucking liar! And no, frankly I don't think this qualifies as more important than my sleep. But since you think kicking someone's door in under false pretense is the proper response for doing your job for you, fuck that cop and fuck you too. A normal person would investigate the tip, not attack the messenger. Tell me something... before I hand delivered that apartment number to you, what leads did you have about the little girl? I'm all ears."
Jun 19, 2023 4:54 am
Well, I guess we now know the REAL you. The ugly, not-,pretending, you. Now who was the liar? The fake? ( He chuckles) Now, seeing that you are the lead suspect in multiple murders, including fleeing the scene of an officer involved shooting, I'm just going to recommend you just turn yourself in. I have no desire nor any intention of sharing anything about this investigation with you further. You are suspect numero uno. You are someone who everyone in the city is going to be looking for. sketch artists are going to plaster your mug all over this town and I want every new station to know your name when the sun cimes up. Proud of yourself? Psychopath much? I hope you never sleep undisturbed again, because several innocent people lost their lives, and they dont get that chance. They will never live, breath, eat, or have a choice to sleep EVER AGAIN! He slams down the phone, jerks the cord out of the wall, gets dressed, packs enough clothes to last him several days (plus all the save kit, toiletries and such). He loads it in the trunk of his vehicle and goes back to work. He doesn't care if has to sleep in his desk, he's about to put in more hours than he has ever put in, trying to hunt down this .... (none of the explicatives he can think of are profound enough to describe what he thinks of her).

That's certainly an... interesting take. ?

So, what now?
Jun 19, 2023 1:14 pm
He's back at the office, doing exactly what he said...

He puts out an APB and BOLO for Kimberly Hale, and internal communication within the law enforcement community (local, state, federal)...will include everything he found in her record, her ID, her address, etc. Armed & Dangerous, murder suspect, use of deadly for on LEO. Sketch to follow.

Assuming he can't find any record of her photo, (ooc: Not sure if the DMV kept any type of copy of the photo that was on your ID, that far back)... And you can't find any other photos of her, mugshots, or otherwise.... He calls in the best sketch artist they have available to try and render one.

Once he has all of this collated, he will prepare a public statement, and start blasting out PR to local, state, and if possible national media.

Till then reach out to the non-profit organizations that support law enforcement, but the crime stoppers and others... To start creating a reward.

he then reaches out to the correctional community to start spreading work through The jails and prison systems. They're really no better informants than those who have something to gain, and nothing to lose.
Jun 19, 2023 1:57 pm
A sketch artist will provide a very good rendering. Alerts go out, calls are made, but it will take a few hours... it's probably between 3 and 4 in the morning at this point. (None of the non-profits are answering yet, however.)

As Vlax is sitting at his desk, the light will flicker. A moment later, they go out. Seconds after that, the emergency lighting kicks on, and that's when Vlax sees a small girl, about six years old, standing in the doorway to his office.

She's missing perfect, one inch by five inch strips of flesh.

After staring at -- or more properly, through -- Vlax, she turns and begins to walk down the hallway of the precinct.

Vlax first reaches out to the hospital to check the condition of the officer that was shot.

Then he pours over the evidence. Studies the crime scene photos, the evidence lists of what was collected, and every finite detail. Works out a timeline.

Truth is, He has nothing to do and plenty of time to burn. This narcissist called once, left notes, called twice, and decided to play games... First pretends to be an innocent disinterested, disconnected and meek tenant, only to turn around and become a vicious, hateful, creature... then she won't be able to avoid her next move.

Coffee time. Research time.

Thoughts & notes...

1. Identify this city and state of her birth from her birth certificate. Search those local records, libraries, newspapers, for any mention of her family name and start tracking down relative..

2. Search for school records that include any mention of a high school, from which she might have graduated. Colleges as well. Start identifying classmates, and individuals who could speak to their affiliation.

3. Brainstorming ways to take this computer electronics thing that she was so desperate about keeping quiet and blowing that up in their face. Perhaps PR releases that mention clandestine work and computers, and how the person of interest might be involved with institutions, colleges, electronics manufacturing and design organizations. Piss her off, and prompt a response.

4. Post extensive surveillance on the apartment building. It didn't appear to be anything left there that would be of used to her, but that means she had to go back ready. She already had her stuff bundled up and ready to leave when she encountered the patrolman.

5. Needs to work with local building and health officials to come up with a reason to go into every apartment in that building and search for, something dangerous. Radon gas? Lead paint? Infected rodents? He doesn't care and quite frankly it need not be real. He just needs a reason to get in that building and scour it.

Vlax immediately thinks he has fallen asleep... and tries to shake himself awake. Failing that, his detective instinct kicks in, and he starts trying to debunk what he's seeing... I mean this girl is dead. He saw her body. So now he's looking for the scars that would be left over from her autopsy, all the while taking cover behind his desk and trying to remain quiet. He's a pretty avid sci-fi reader, and enjoys the occasional sci-fi movie... So he knows a zombie when he sees one. Even if he thinks it's just a dream.

She didn't seem to match any image of a zombie Vlax had seen in that Romero movie he had seen while he was at the Academy. He also doesn't see autopsy scars.

As he hides behind his desk, the girl will reappear in his doorway and stare through him before again turning and moving up the hallway.
Jun 19, 2023 7:49 pm
What is this thing looking for, if not brains of the living. He reminds himself, this is not a cheap movie. He waits and watches her, still believing he is in some kind of dream... induced by exhaustion, poor diet, odd hours, and the general horror of what he does.

He just tries to remain stealthy ... Not that it seems to matter if she's looking through him, but it's instinct. if she moves on, down and out of sight he will follow, quietly... Curious. Just maybe his psychy saw something in the evidence that he missed and his subconscious is trying to tell him something.

Why the hell is it speaking to him in night.are fashion?
Jun 19, 2023 8:29 pm
As Vlax follows the dead girl from the alleyway (or at least the image of her?), he finds that when she moves further out of his sight, when he catches up she is waiting for him... looking at him, but her dead eyes focusing about a thousand yards behind him.

When he moves into view again, she will turn and keep moving away. It becomes obvious she wants Vlax to follow her... Out of the precinct, down the road, continuing on. And on. Minutes tick by, and eventually the Detective realizes where she's heading... to the alley she was found in.
Jun 20, 2023 4:25 am
Vlax follows, looking around to see if anyone is around, anywhere? Clearly. it's early bit shouldn't there have been some kind of response to the claxons,as he was leaving the station? A police station maybe a little less busy, but still active at all hours. Streets still have folks, driving by. even early morning. His dream seems flawed, but aren't they all? He follows, still trying to debunk the maddness of it all.
Jun 20, 2023 3:30 pm
The streets are empty, save for the bodies. The super... the mom and dad... even the downed cop... lumbering out of the tall shadows, pointing accusingly at Vlax. Over and over again. And still, the little girl moves forward.

Eventually, she turns into the alleyway. The one Vlax new she was heading to. He follows her in, and she moves to where she was hanging. As he watches, her body begins to rotate. It defies physics, and even reason... but the girl is, again, upside down. Cords snake out of the darkness, binding her again. She points at the detective, and her entire skin falls off of her moments before a tidal wave of blood slams into him.

The next thing he knows, the sounds of the night come crashing back in. A car honks in the distance. Crows caw overhead. Vlax notices the dumpsters have been pushed to block off the other and of the alleyway, and when he turns, he sees a figure silhouted in the glow of the streetlight behind him.

As he moves into the alleyway, Vlax recognizes the figure... as the man who impersonated Edward Schmidt.

Vlax is shocked to have realized he must have slept walk out here. He was sure all along that he had been dreaming but he had no idea that he had actually left the station and staggered here. How in the hell did he avoid getting run over?

Drawing and raising his weapon to a low ready, he barks orders like all cops do, "Halt Police! Turn around and put your hands behind your back.". He prays that he brought a radio with him, and with one hand reaches towards his belt to feel for it. You practically sleeps with his service sidearm, but the radio... ???

"Mmm... I don't think so," "Eddie" replies coyly as he continues to advance, even as Vlax becomes (literally!) paralyzed with fear. "You know... watching you flounder around has been delicious. You've unwittingly done more to disrupt Seattle's court than I ever could have alone. Here I just planned to come into the Emerald City, sew a little chaos and discord, and run before I got hunted down... but you... you've put out communications that will draw state and even federal attention! Oh, they'll struggle under scrutiny like that! Unfortunately for you... I have to dispose of you before you realize how wrong you've been about... well, everything really... and call off what you've set in motion."

With that, Vlax notices a flick of his assailant's wrist, and a switchblade glints in the faint light.

"You've seen my handiwork. A shame it isn't October... because I intend to carve you up something impressive. I think I'll keep your badge though. It will make a nice addition to my collection."

The first slice cuts into Vlax, across his right forearm. The pain snaps him out of his paralysis... but all he can think to do now is try to run. Unfortunately, this... thing...this monster... is between him and his escape!

If run is all that he can do, and that is exactly what he does.. intinctively he tries to brandish a firearm and discharge it even if it's over his shoulder or reflexively. He also continues to reach for and look for that radio. Perhaps he can call for help. He has the feeling that no matter how much training he's had in hand to hand, this psychopath is probably more skilled. Was he drugged? How is it that he froze like that?
Jun 20, 2023 6:30 pm
OOC:
To be fair, he would have felt the overwhelming fear consume him. He'd know exactly why he froze, even if he doesn't want to admit it to himself. As a cop, the understanding that some people freeze up would be well known. Hell, it's why some otherwise good cops can't do the job.
Vlax squeezes the trigger as he tries to dash past "Eddie," but as soon as he thinks he's past the man, "Eddie" is right there in front of him again -- laughing as his blade glints in the light.
OOC:
8 lethal damage total. 2 last turn, 6 this turn. Vlax has 8 health.
Cut after cut... nothing deep, but each slice is a biting pain. An image of the girl's dad flashes in Vlax's mind, as he slows... collapsing onto his back as his eyes go dim. He can feel his life seeping out of him with his blood.

Vlax hears the unmistakable sound of a shotgun, immediately followed by what sounds like a... dog, maybe?... snarling as something rushes past him. Then he hears "Eddie"'s voice scream in pain. A lot of thudding, then something hit something metal. Another shotgun blast. More snarling.

Silence.

He sees two forms standing over him.

"A Noctuku? I didn't think they existed. Thanks for the help, Sheriff." A woman's voice... Kimberly's voice.
"This is the cop huh?" A male voice... Vlax doesn't think he's heard it before.
"Yeah. The asshole. Tells me some little girl and my super get killed, so I start looking into it, give him a tip, and he tries to come down on me like the wrath of god. I swear, you do something nice for someone... no good deed, I guess."
"Auspex?"
"Oh Christ, Hank, I could smell the blood as soon as I got on the floor. So yeah, sends a cop to kick in my door during the day as a thank you for doing his job for him."
"Door trick?"
"Door trick."

The male voice chuckles before continuing. "So, the Prince said everyone gets one Childe. You're really going to use it on him?"
"Fuck yeah. I have more than enough time to teach him not to bite the hand that feeds."
"That is amazingly vindictive. I'm not sure that's healthy."
"Yeah, well, neither is kicking my door in."
"You are a petty, petty princess."

The male voice laughs. "That was the worst curtsy I've ever seen. Don't let Yuri catch you. She'll make you take lessons. Anyway... he's dying. Shit or get off the pot."
"Yeah, yeah... find him his first meal, would ya?"

As Vlax's life slips away, he tastes metal dripping into his mouth. Seconds later, his entire body feels like it's on fire as he sits bolt upright. He wants to scream, but no sound comes out. His stomach feels like it's eating himself, his head is pounding, and every nerve feels like it was set ablaze.

A man drops onto the ground beside him, and Vlax instinctively knows what to do. He bites the man, and sucks. The blood tastes rich and sweet, filling him in a way food never did. Eventually a strong hand jerks his head away. Kimberly's voice orders him to lick the bite. He does so... Vlax is starting to get his head on straight. He sees a large man wearing glasses. Then he sees Kimberly, squatting in front of him.

"Alright asshole... let's go talk about my door."
