Make "Retire Game" Reversible

Mar 9, 2022 6:56 pm
vagueGM says:
The current Retirement of games should be reversible. I have seen many games come out of retirement a year later."
I agree, I've held off retiring games specifically because I've wondered if I might want to continue it in the future if players become active again. It would be great if this feature was reversible.

Despite the fierce controversy this feature has generated, I've put it into staging.

Have you looked at this on staging? Public

Are we happy with the message?

I don't think characters are removed.

I also don't believe that admins would ever make a game public at their discretion - people could have expressed thoughts in their private games (esp in ooc threads) that they wouldn't want public.

I had those thoughts too when I was trying out the feature...
And especially with retiring not being final anymore, having a different message there would make a lot of sense

Characters are definitely not removed.

The message about the admins making it public seems very weird. I would get rid of that, and can not use this site for many games that have any child-safety restrictions (teaching in schools for instance) because of phrases like this.

The fact that it is not final anymore means we don't really need much more than a "Are you sure you want to retire this game? It will be moved to the Retired Games drawer at the bottom of you game list. You can come back here and unretire it later if needed."

I wonder why that disclaimer about admins making it public is even there. @Keleth, was there a specific reason for it?

Probably a note about how you can't post in the game while it's retired as well, but otherwise, yes

I have received posts (though not notifications) in retired games. Are we sure this is true? Does it take a while to kick in.

I will make a second account (still not done that) and test on mapdm tomorrow if need be.

Hm, I thought that was the whole point of retiring, along with cleaning up your game list.
I guess I never tried posting in a retired game. I just assumed it would not work

Nope, you're right. You can post in retired games. That seems like a bug

It does seem like a bug. Especially since the posts don't show up in any threads outside the game (or did not used to, but the homapage has been reworked) and there are no notifications, so they are bound to be missed.

There was code to shut down all permissions, but it was removed in 2016.

It's a fortunate bug though as to unretire games we just need to turn the flag back on (provided the game was retired after 2016).

Stopping people posting in retired games (and still allow clean unretiring) looks much much harder.

Maybe a warning about future posts not showing up (without checking the game pages) is in order?

It might actually be a 'feature' that we can still post there if we need to? Yeah, call it a feature.

Cool. If somebody gives me the final text then I'll check it in.

Are you sure you want to retire this game?

It will be moved to the Retired Games drawer at the bottom of your Games list. You can come back here and unretire it later, if needed.

Any future posts in this game will not show up in the normal notification systems (e.g. Front Page, Latest Game Posts, or email) and will only be visible by manually checking the game's threads.

Rough draft posted above. Edits welcome. I am especially not sure about the blank lines.

I don't know if games will keep posting to Discord, so I did not mention in that in the examples of 'normal notifications'.

It almost seem to be that we should send the GM an email with this message (user controlled choice) with the "come back here" and "the game's threads" turned into URL links that they can follow later. What do we think?

It's pretty long, but I don't see anything that can be cut. It's probably fine
