Non-Exiting Save for Character Sheets

Mar 8, 2022 9:22 am
With all the fanciness going into the character sheets, I think it is time to revisit the issue of a Save button that just saves our work and does not exit the editor. We can then have the sheet open in another tab to view while we spend the large amount of time editing back and forth.

A Preview of the sheet could be nice too, but could be tricky, and might not be worth it since we also want to test how the sheet works when integrated into a game thread, and other things that a Preview would not easily simulate.

On a cost-to-code vs benefit-to-sheet-designers, I think this is a no-brainer.

Moving to pending.

Good suggestion!

I figured the Save is easy, while a Preview would much harder and have less benefit.

We already have an ajax call for previewing BBCode (from post preview). The calculation engine was componentised to allow it to be used both when viewing a character sheet, and in the rolls integration.

It's just putting those two together (I think).

Have you looked at this on staging? Public

No
Yes - I'm happy with it

Okay, I'm confused. I thought the goal was to have a save button that doesn't take you out of editing mode. The preview/edit toggle is nice but it's something else.
It also apparently only exists on Custom sheets. It's most important there but it would probably make sense (if we want to have it) to have it on all sheets.

Save still takes us out of the editing.

The preview is nice, but we might be spending a lot of time crafting these more complex sheets and saving our work from time to time is good practice.

I figured that if we had the preview then we wouldn't need the non-exiting save.

I see what you're after now.

Wow. That was much harder than I expected. Test it on all sorts of character sheets.

Test with:
Custom, DnD, Fate Accelerated, Fate Core, Numenera, The Strange: Random edits all worked.

Star Wars: Deleting Soak sets it to 0, deleting Brawn sets it to what it was before, and does not change it. These should not be empty, so this is not a big deal.

New World of Darkness: Does not show the name when editing, but I believe this is a known bug.
Pressing enter in a single-line field saves the sheet. It used to save and exit, so this is consistent, but might be a bug if people don't want to save after every enter. (I like it like that, though.)

This is such a great idea! I only briefly tested it so far, but seems to work for me.
